What is Research in Pokémon GO?

Research is a feature in Pokémon GO that gives Trainers the opportunity to help Professor Willow with his Pokémon Research. Completing a Research Task will unlock rewards. The more challenging a task, the greater the reward will be.

There are two types of Research you can contribute to: Field Research and Special Research .

What is Field Research ?

Field Research tasks are assigned/collected by spinning PokéStops. Trainers can only receive and complete one task from each PokéStop each day. Tasks are the same for all trainers on a given day so you can share PokéStop locations for a desirable task with others in your community.

The task will consist of an objective and a reward for completing it. Rewards range from Items to Pokémon encounters. If the task awards items, it will disclose what item and quantity on the task itself. If it’s an encounter, it won’t. Instead you can refer to the handy graphic on this page.

The first Field Research task you complete for a day will reward you with a Stamp towards unlocking a Research Breakthrough .

How do I unlock a Research Breakthrough ?

You can unlock a Research Breakthrough by collect 7 Stamps. Again, Stamps are obtained from your first completed Field Research task for the day. Unlike the ‘First PokéStop of the Day’ or ‘First Catch of the Day’ streaks, you do not need to collect Stamps on consecutive days. You won’t ever lose stamps you earned because you missed a day.

Upon reaching 7 Stamps, you can open the box and earn a handful of helpful Rewards. Rewards will consist of a Pokémon encounter, XP, Stardust and will include one of the following items: Rare Candy, Pinap Berries, Ultra Balls, or Poké Balls.

What is Special Research ?

Special Research is like Field Research but they can be thought of as part of the game’s Story. Like Field Research they consist of tasks that you work through to earn Rewards. However in Special Research completing a set of task will earn you additional rewards. Completing all sets of tasks in the series will earn you a more valuable reward. eg. A Mythical Pokémon encounter.

While, Trainers cannot repeat Special Research tasks, Professor Willow will occasionally seek assistance with new tasks. Special Research can also be assigned at Special Events like GO Fest in Chicago or during in-game Events like Pokémon GO Halloween 2018.

What are the CP numbers next to the Pokémon in the graphic?

That is the range of possible CPs that your Pokémon encounter could be. The highest is Perfect IVs and the lowest is not so perfect IVs.

What is the Sparkle next to some Pokémon in the graphic?

The sparkle indicates that there is a chance of encountering that Pokémon in their Shiny form. The chance of encountering a Shiny from a Field Research task is 1 in 450. However they could possibly be higher for certain encounters (eg. Absol).

Special Research List

Special Research Lines come in two main flavors: Unlimited and Limited. Unlimited lines unlock at specific points in the game, and  are available to complete at the player's leisure. Limited lines have specific requirements to unlock such as playing during a specific time period, and may or may not have a time-limit.

Unlimited Special Research

research tasks pokemon go event

Research System Breakdown

Research Tasks are divided into four categories:

  • Field Research - Single-objective goals such as spinning PokeStops and catching Pokemon that reward items and one "stamp" (1 per day). These are the tasks outlined above.
  • Special Research - Story based multi-objective goals such as catching and transferring Pokemon that have unknown rewards
  • Paid Research  - Similar to Special Research, but a ticket must be purchased in order to actually enjoy these Research lines. These are frequently tied to events or seasons.
  • Research Breakthrough - Rewards based on collecting stamps that reward Stardust, items, and a Pokemon encounter.

Task Mechanics

A trainer can hold up to 3 tasks at a time, 4 including an AR task. Also, trainers can trash a task if they do not want to try to complete it.

Trainers receive tasks from spinning PokeStops, and each Pokestop gives the same task to all trainers during the day. If the reward is an encounter, all trainers receive the same species (though IVs will differ). If you get a task on Monday from a stop and don’t clear it until Tuesday, you will not be able to get a task from that same PokeStop on Tuesday as once you receive a task, you will not receive another one from that PokeStop. However, if you delete a task, you can go back to that stop later in the day to get it again.

Various events frequently have their own unique set of tasks with event-themed rewards. Community Days in particular bend the Research rule a bit, as the research assigned to each Stop for the day changes to Community Day-themed research for the duration of the event, and revert back to normal after the event. Note that completing research from a given stop at any point during a given day will cause it to remain claimed for the rest of said day regardless of event-themed task changes.

Tasks give a variety of rewards, often based on the challenge you had to complete. Rewards can be encounters, Stardust, or items such as balls, potions, revives, TMs, and Rare Candy. Generally, more difficult tasks will have higher rewards.

Encounters from tasks are level 15 Pokemon with IVs of at least 10 in all 3 stats. After clearing an encounter task, you will be taken to the encounter. The Pokemon will not be weather boosted regardless of the in-game weather. You can run from the encounter and come back to it in the future.

Once you clear an encounter task, you can immediately collect a new task. Interestingly enough, you can save a large number of encounters! Some trainers do this and choose to catch them during a Lucky Egg or Star Piece session.

Each day when you complete your first task, you receive a Research Stamp. When you have 7 stamps, you will receive a Research Breakthrough.

Research Breakthrough rewards change each season.

General Tips

Special research tasks do not give a daily stamp - only field research does Minimum level for Special Research is level 5 Pokemon encounters appear to be at level Many players have a “refill loop” or “grind loop” of stops and gyms in their PoGo lives, often one they hit multiple times each day.. If you have the option, add a second loop. Having multiple loops will greatly increase the number of tasks seen Try to keep one open task so you can always pick a new one up when you visit a Pokestop for the first time in a day. Find a network of players to report tasks, perhaps through your raid chat of choice. You won’t be able to check every stop, so if people call out TM, Rare Candy or Chansey quests it can really help. Some communities have focused on calling out Charmander encounter quests. This is a great way to farm high IV Pokemon before a community day. Some encounters have very large hit-boxes. Save these for when you are working on a 3 excellent or 3 great throw in a row quest. Try not to hold more than 1 long term quest. Remember there is an opportunity cost to holding 3 “Catch a Ditto for 3 Rare Candy” tasks. Obviously the payoff is awesome, but in the meantime you are missing out on so many other potential rewards from other tasks you cannot get. Don’t miss a day of Research Progress. If you don’t think you can play much tomorrow, leave one task unclaimed today. Tomorrow you can wake up, claim the task, and make progress towards your Research Breakthrough. Consider weather, biome, and active events when deciding whether to keep or delete a task. You likely aren’t going to quickly complete the “3 Pidgey or Murkrow” task on a sunny day during a rock event, but you should blow through “catch 5 Pokemon with Weather Boost” on a cloudy day during a fighting event. If you don’t throw excellents well, it’s not the end of the world to toss a task requiring an excellent throw. Holding on to tasks without substantial rewards for a long period of time is a big mistake. In general, take your playstyle into account when deciding to keep or delete a task. Do you battle gyms constantly? Then the Minium task isn’t bad as you will quickly turn it over. Did you already use your raid pass for the day? Then don’t hold on to that “Defeat a level 3 raid for some potions” type tasks. Free to play? Then the hatch 3 eggs” quest is probably an easy one to delete. Have a task that you know you cannot complete quickly at a stop near your house? Well trash that task while you grind. Then as you return home you can grab it later in the day. That way you can cycle through more tasks without it clogging your inventory. Remember that reward encounters and the Research Breakthrough reward have a 0% flee rate. Use pinaps liberally! Keep track of local nests. “Catch 3 Bugs” is much easier when you know there is a Caterpie nest a couple blocks away.

  • If a Trainer encounters a Shiny Pokémon as a research reward, said Pokémon will remain shiny until the Trainer captures it. The Trainer is free to run away and re-encounter the Pokémon and it will always be shiny. [1]
  • Upon collecting the reward (which grants the stamp), you can choose not to enter the encounter immediately, but if you tap the reward again, you will immediately be taken to the encounter without warning. However, if you don't have enough Poké Balls to catch it, you can exit and the reward will still be available later. The Pokémon is considered to have spawned when you first enter the encounter. Encounter tasks do not count towards the 3 task maximum once you have collected the stamp, even if you haven't captured the Pokémon.

Keldeo stands proudly on a grassy hill with a pink and purple sky behind it

As part of the “Mythic Blade” event , Pokémon Go is adding Keldeo to the game, though it will only be obtainable through buying a paid ticket that unlocks the “ Something Extraordinary ” Special Research Tasks.

To get the “Something Extraordinary” Special Research Task set (and Keldeo), you’ll need to buy the $7.99 ticket in the shop . In addition to this, you’ll need to actually open the game and accept the research some time between Dec. 10 at 10 a.m. and Dec. 11 at 8 p.m. in your local time . If you do not do this, you will not get the research.

Once you start the Special Research, it will be unlocked permanently, so there won’t be any rush to complete it.

Keldeo will likely become available through some type of free-to-play method at some point, but it’s not clear when. Seeing how free-to-play players have not gotten a chance to get Shaymin yet (which was from a ticketed event in June and August), you’ll need to wait quite a bit to get Keldeo.

Pokemon GO Catching Wonders Masterwork Research Guide

T he Catching Wonders event in Pokemon GO is currently active which means players can now get their third Master Ball ! If you are aiming to snag yourself that third Master Ball in Pokemon GO, here is a guide on how to get it through the Catching Wonders Masterwork Special Research.

Catching Wonders Event Details: May 14 at 10 AM to May 19 at 8 PM

In order to get access to the Catching Wonders Masterwork Special Research, you must play Pokemon GO during the Catching Wonders Event.

The Catching Wonder Event runs from May 14 at 10 AM and ends on May 19 at 8 PM local time .

Catching Wonders Bonuses

During this event, these are the active bonuses players can also enjoy:

  • 10× Experience from your First Catch of the Day
  • 5× Stardust from your First Catch of the Day
  • 10× Experience from your First PokéStop Spin of the day

Aside from those in-game bonuses, there are event-themed field research tasks that reward XP, Poke Balls, Great Balls, Ultra Balls, and Stardust.

Catching Wonders Special Research Guide

Now that the event details are out of the way, here is a nifty Pokemon GO guide that details what players need to accomplish throughout the special research quests.

The Catching Wonders Special Research is quite a tedious one. In fact, players need to catch at least 1,400 Pokemon to complete the quest line. Considering the final reward is a Master Ball, we say it’s worth grinding it out.

In any case, here are the series of quests you need to complete for the third Master Ball of Pokemon GO.

Catching Wonders Masterwork (1/ 4)

The first series of tasks start off really high with at least 250 Pokemon caught (which can increase if you do not coordinate it with the berry and nice curveball quests). As such, you better have enough Poke Balls and berries in stock and have perfected your curveball throws.

The rewards for completing this set of tasks are 2,500 XP and an encounter with the sand castle Pokemon Sandygast.

Catching Wonders Masterwork (2/ 4)

With 300 (or more) Pokemon caught in this set, let us all be glad we can clear our Pokemon storage with one of the tasks in this set, even for just a tiny bit.

Completing this set of tasks rewards players with 3,500 XP and an encounter with the sheep Pokemon Dubwool.

Catching Wonders Masterwork (3/ 4)

For this third set of tasks, taking down Team GO Rocket members is a good breather from catching all those Pokemon.

The third set of tasks rewards players with 4,500 XP and an encounter with a Hisuian Sneasel.

Catching Wonders Masterwork (4/ 4)

If you thought you could finish this special research in one day, turns out you can’t. On the other hand, if you think you can just chill and slack off on the final set of tasks, you also can’t do that.

This fourth and final set of tasks requires players to properly grind every day for at least seven days (if you have enough incubators or the endurance to hatch 20 eggs).

Completing this set will grant players with a Master Ball along with 5,000 XP and Stardust.

Use Your Third Master Ball Wisely

With another Master Ball in your hands, consider using it wisely. It might come in handy if you want to use it on a perfect IV Galarian legendary bird. Or maybe you could use it on the first wild shiny encounter for a video content idea just like how Mystic7 caught a shiny Jinx. Perhaps, maybe even use it on a future costumed legendary raid Pokemon like the Armored Mewtwo.

Alternatively, you could simply just hoard it in your bag storage, along with those two dusty other Master Balls you got from the first two times it was available.

Whatever you end up deciding to do with your Master Ball, we hope this Pokemon GO article guide helped you in securing a Master Ball.
