WikaGenZ: Bagong anyo ng Filipino slang sa Pilipinas

2020 IJRSE – Volume 9 Issue 3 Special Issue on Filipino Research Papers

Available Online : 10 July 2020

Gime, Arjohn* Manila Science High School Philippine Normal University – Manila, Philippines ( [email protected] )

Macascas, Cristina Philippine Normal University – Manila, Philippines ( [email protected] )

This study explored the use of slang of Generation Z in the Philippines. It focused on analyzing the sociolinguistic transformation of language particularly in Senior High School and College students in selected schools in Metro Manila. It has been found that Filipino Generation Z known as GenZers are still using the language patterns like back formation, clippings, acronyms, metathesis, and relating to an icon. Furthermore, this also revealed that GenZers have developed a language transformation in a process of changing word to word, change in meaning and creating expressions. It is recommended to further explore the study in looking in depth the effects of WikaGenz in written discourses, the implication of messages with the other generations, and its possible implications to sociolinguistic phenomena.

Keywords : generation Z; slang; sociolinguistics; survey; variety

Philippine Review of Economics . Published twice a year (June and December) by the UP School of Economics and Philippine Economic Society, this journal is devoted to the publication of theoretical and empirical work in economic development. It welcomes papers about the Philippines and other developing countries. It is also a forum for research findings that show the relation of economics with other disciplines.

Philippine Social Sciences Review . A peer-reviewed journal of the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy, this journal aims to promote the critical exchange of ideas and research findings in the social sciences and philosophy among the faculty, research staff, and students of the CSSP, the Diliman academic community, as well as communities of scholars in other parts of the country and the world.

Philippine Journal of Public Policy: Interdisciplinary Development Perspectives . This is the annual peer-reviewed journal of the University of the Philippines Center for Integrative and Development Studies (UP CIDS) released in print and online.

Review of Women’s Studies . The journal serves as a forum where ideas on issues and concerns affecting the lives of women, seen from the analytical perspectives of different disciplines, may be exchanged. It encourages and seeks to publish research that employs feminist methodologies and that adheres to the principles of feminist research, bearing in mind the intersectionality of gender, class, religion, age, and education. The RWS also features interviews of women through a first-hand account of their experiences to discover and highlight ways in which they have invested their lives with meaning and dignity. Creative works that provide insights into women’s consciousness and articulate their experiences are equally welcome. The RWS follows the double-blind peer review process.

The Archive . This is the official journal of the Department of Linguistics, College of Social Sciences and Philosophy, University of the Philippines Diliman. The Regular Series of the journal serves as a peer-reviewed publication for original works dealing primarily but not exclusively with Philippine languages and dialects.
