Timeless beauty of Indian culture unveiled at Kendra Dance Festival 2024

The Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra, an institution dedicated to preserving and promoting India's rich cultural heritage, held a dance festival recently. Under the leadership of Padmashri Shobha Deepak Singh, Vice Chairperson of the Kendra and a member of the Shriram family.

The Kendra Dance Festival offered audiences a spectacular experience, showcasing three dance dramas - Parikrama, Karna, and Meera. These per formances transported audiences on a mesmerising journey through the world of dance. Artistes brought the stories to life with their artistry, leaving audiences enthralled. The festival took place at the Kamani Auditorium. Padmashri Shobha Deepak Singh served as both producer and director for all three productions, collaborating with renowned choreographer Shashidharan Nair to ensure a seamless and artistic experience.

Padmashri Shobha Deepak Singh remarked, "The Kendra Dance Festival productions are not just performances; they are reflections of our cultural essence and timeless wisdom. In a world where 'fusion' often leads to confusion, our commitment to preserving the purity and authenticity of Indian dance tradition shines through. Through the performances, we immersed ourselves into the depths of human existence, exploring themes of spirituality, destiny, and the eternal cycle of life and death. These productions retained their original themes while offering profound relevance to today's society, where violence and discrimination continue to plague our world. On this journey of enlightenment and artistic expression, we celebrated the timeless beauty of Indian culture at the Kendra Dance Festival 2024."

About performances:

Parikrama : The performance began with the concept of the Hiranyagarbh, symbolising potential. The story then followed the soul's journey as it manifested into the physical world as the Atman. The production vividly portrayed the Atman's quest for liberation, drawing from the Katha Upanishad and ultimately achieving Moksha (liberation).

Karna : This poignant dance-drama explored the complexities of human existence as depicted in the epic Mahabharata. Focusing on the character of Karna, the production portrayed his life as a relentless struggle against the forces of fate, showcasing his noble virtues amidst adversity.

Meera : This dance-drama portrayed the life of Meera, a renowned saint poetess whose verses brought life to the barren desert and inspired millions in search of alternatives. Meera's vibrant and effervescent poetry carried messages of liberation and encouraged inner awakening wherever she travelled.

India, back in the palme d’or hunt after 30 years, hopes cannes will help producers see the light.

Three co-productions on show at the Croisette this year, including competition entry 'All We Imagine As Light,' have made use of a scheme offering 40 percent rebates: "India has all the right resources."

'All We Imagine As Light'

India is ending its decades-long absence from the Palme d’Or this year with Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light  lining up against the likes of Yorgos Lanthimos’ Kinds of Kindness and Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis for the major prize of the Cannes Film Festival.

But for Indian industry insiders who have waited 30 years since Shaji N. Karun’s  Swaham (My Own)  for a chance at Palme d’Or glory, awards recognition and persuading global audiences to see Indian-produced films are just a couple of pieces of the equation. Making the case to foreign filmmakers about the benefits of shooting in India also is top of mind.

At Cannes this year, India is pitching itself as a location for international productions hoping to take advantage of the country’s exotic locales, more affordable labor costs, and its workforce that has plenty of experience making movies. Among its selling points is a revised Film in India incentive plan that now offers as much as a 40 percent rebate for spending that tops out at $3.6 million.

“India has all the right resources for the international producers to consider basing their next production, be it a live shoot or animation project or just for production services like visual effects and animation,” says Sanjay Jaju, secretary to the Government of India, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

The Film in India plan launched at Cannes two years ago with a cap of $3 million, with increased incentives introduced in December. Jaju says this jump already “has attracted many productions” to the country.

Santosh  is set in the northern Indian countryside around the city of Lucknow. It stars Shahana Goswami as a widowed woman who is offered her dead husband’s job as a cop. Initially, the British-based filmmakers were not sure how they could pull off such a film.

“ Santosh  was always destined to be a challenge because it is a predominantly U.K. production from a U.K. director and U.K. producers,” says producer Mike Goodridge of Good Chaos, one of the companies behind the movie. “So how was that team going to make a film effectively in India in Hindi with an Indian cast and crew?”

The answer, Goodridge says, was its partnership with the Mumbai-based Suitable Pictures, which boarded the feature to help the team navigate shooting in the country.

“Our hurdles were swiftly overcome and we were able to enter production with relative speed and efficiency,” says Goodridge, who also worked with BBC Film and Razor Film on the project.

Sister Midnight , meanwhile, is set in Mumbai and is described as a “punk comedy, a feminist revenge film, and a revamped vampire movie rolled into one.” It follows the travails of a young woman (Radhika Apte) trapped in an arranged marriage. Along the way, she discovers that life in a Bombay slum is not what she wants and finds that she has a thirst for revenge.

These projects were made thanks to a co-production agreement India has with France. In addition, India has co-production agreements with 15 other countries: Australia, Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, Israel, Italy, New Zealand, Poland, Portugal, South Korea, Russia, Spain and the U.K.

In recent years, notable features shot in the country have included the Chris Hemsworth starrer  Extraction 2  (2023), which is part of arguably Netflix’s most important action franchise, and the Oscar-nominated feature  The White Tiger  (2020), which also streamed on Netflix.

Officials are hoping to up the number of big films such as these, but also smaller projects.

In the two years since Film in India was announced, it has been revised a dozen times in the hope of bringing in more interest. In addition to the financial incentives, a key selling point is what government officials call a “single window” permission system that allows producers to bypass complicated bureaucracies to film at locales such as ancient desert forts, colorful festivals, and cinematic beaches.

The Indian film industry produces as many as 2,000 features a year, something foreign producers say speaks to the amount of qualified crew available for work on productions. “Filmmaking is in the DNA of India, so we were tapping into a continentwide tradition,” notes  Santosh  producer Goodridge.

Kumar is particularly pleased that a few of the films recently shot in India are getting recognition this year at Cannes. “It is heartening to have more Indian projects in the Cannes official selection this year,” says Kumar, noting that two of them “have been beneficiaries of the support of the government in terms of incentives and as official co-productions.”

However, the dominant community living here is Hindu but it provides a safe, secure and prosperous land for every community. ‘The Shameless’ Review: A Remarkable Lead Performance Illuminates Radical Visions of Indian Womanhood

Filled with religious and personal turmoil, Bulgarian director Konstantin Bojanov's Un Certain Regard selection arrives as a tactile but malformed queer Indian drama.

the shameless cannes

A radical vision of Indian womanhood collides with scattered storytelling in director Konstantin Bojanov ‘s “ The Shameless ,” a provocative queer drama laid low by its oblique narrative. Following two women destined for a life of sex work, the drama is lucid in its politics, but often opaque in its drama — a dynamic embodied by two wildly different lead performances.

Popular on Variety

Shetty, meanwhile, plays Devika with a more theatrical approach, despite her being a much quieter counterpart to Renuka. While she embodies some of the most volatile symptoms of repression (including a particularly incendiary depiction of self-harm), her style of acting results in a strange aesthetic bifurcation, as cinematic naturalism clashes with the filmic equivalent of classical Indian dance, in all its operatic glory. Whenever Renuka is on screen, the camera tracks each moment closely and intimately, as Sengupta lures the camera closer into her orbit with harsh, raspy, romantic whispers that cut the acidic sting of her words. However, in order to fully account for Shetty’s more showy performance, the frame doesn’t just grow wider, but becomes more distant. It can’t help but feel disconnected, even when the younger actress imbues Devika with a vivid sense of anguish through brazen physicality.

Bojanov often takes moments of physical and emotional self-discovery for granted, focusing instead on how these women deal not with exploration, but of having explored. The frame never shies away from physical intimacy, but its most emotionally intimate moments seem to occur between cuts, and between scenes, as the movie skips forward to dilemmas dictated by the plot — Can the two women escape together? Where will they go next?  — rather than by key moments of pathos. Bojanov’s approach stabs, but seldom twists.

“The Shameless” does occasionally try to supplement its flimsy character moments with superimposed, dreamlike premonitions, but these are more fleeting flourishes rather than a consistent visual language to get any coherent point across. However, despite its lacking emotional throughlines, the film’s frankness with regards to femininity and women’s bodies, and its vicious depictions of the violent forms of control enacted by men — ideas mapped out on Sengupta’s painful expressions in every scene — create a vivid texture, and a tactile sense of reality. “The Shameless” is mostly worthwhile, if also limited to being a realistic portrait of bleak circumstances punctuated by occasional spiritual resilience.
