500+ Words Essay on My Pet Dog

Pets are a great blessing in anyone’s life. They are the only ones who love us unconditionally. Pets always offer us everything they have without asking for anything in return. The main aim of any pet’s life is to make their owner happy. Nowadays, even the term ‘owner’ is changing. People prefer their pets as kids and to themselves as parents. This is how the relationship between pets is evolving. People treat them no less than humans. For instance, they celebrate their birthdays; get those matching outfits and more.

In my opinion, I feel the pets rightly deserve it. The most common pet you can find at anyone’s place is dogs. A man’s best friend and the most faithful animal, a dog. I also have a pet dog that I love to bits. We got him when he was a little baby and have watched him grow into a beautiful dog. All my family members love him with all their heart. We love his silly antics and cannot imagine our lives without him. We named him Sasha.

Sasha – My Pet Dog

My father adopted Sasha when he was a little baby. His friend had given birth to puppies and they decided to put the puppies up for adoption. We convinced our father to get one for us. Considering they knew our family well, they immediately agreed. Little did we know that our lives would change forever after his entrance.

Essay on My Pet Dog

Sasha came in like a blessing for our family. He belongs to the breed of Labrador. Sasha was black in colour, pure coal black. He came in as a puppy with his cute little paws and eyes. We couldn’t stop gushing over this beauty. My siblings used to fight with each other as to who will get the maximum time to play with Sasha.

As and when Sasha grew up, he learned various tricks. We trained him to follow our instructions and he even learned a few tricks. We loved showing him off to our colony friends and relatives. I always took Sasha out with me as he loved taking a walk on the road.

Furthermore, my siblings and I took on the responsibility of keeping Sasha clean. Every week, we took turns to bathe him and brush him nicely. I remember I even got a bow for him from my pocket money. Sasha loved it and wagged his tail in excitement. Sasha has been with us through thick and thin and we will forever be indebted to him for his loyalty.

A Changed Life

Before having a pet dog, we didn’t know what all we would experience. After Sasha came into our lives, he changed it forever. Sasha changed the meaning of loyalty for us. We learned how this faithful animal always worked for our happiness and safety.

Certainly, Sasha made us better human beings. We are now more compassionate towards animals. There was one instance where the stray dogs were going to harm a kitten, and to our surprise, Sasha saved that little kitten and got her home.

In other words, we have learned a lot of things from Sasha. He protected us when we slept at night. He tried to cheer us up whenever anyone of us was sad. Sasha’s obedience inspired me a lot to be kind to my parents. Therefore, all the credit for changing our lives goes to Sasha.

Essay on My Pet in 150 words

I have a pet dog and his name is Chandler. He is named after my favourite “ Friends ” character and has been with us for the last nine months. His colour is golden and his tail is bushy as he is a golden retriever. Chandler is very energetic and likes to play a lot with all of us. He runs extremely fast when chasing cats. He is very playful. We take good care of his diet. I give him foods like eggs, meat, fish, bread, rice, etc. Whenever I return from school, he wags his tail in joy and jumps and hops all around me as if celebrating. Chandler knows everybody in our family and whenever he sees a new person, he barks at them, but he is sweet and does not bite anyone. He is very intelligent as well and gives us handshakes with his paws. He understands whatever we tell, and on command, he sits and rolls over too. He is an essential part of our family and we all love him very much.

Essay on My Pet in 250 words

My pet dog is a Golden Retriever and his name is Cheddar. He is named after a dog seen on the famous sitcom “Brooklyn 99”. Cheddar is a very energetic and playful dog. He likes to go on walks a lot and play with frisbees and balls. My dad brought him home a year ago. Although I somewhat wanted a cat, now I love him the most. Bella, my sister is crazy about dogs, she wanted a dog since time immemorial. At first, our mother was sceptical about getting a pet, but now Cheddar is her favourite. She treats him just like the way she treats us.

My sister is particular about his timely vaccinations, eating habits, cleanliness, etc. She bathes him twice a week and every evening, we take him out for a stroll in the neighbourhood as well as the park. As mentioned before, Cheddar is quite active. Hence, we play with him in the park a lot. We throw a ball or a frisbee and play a game of fetch with him. He likes to roll in the leaves and it is fun to watch him do so. Along with being active, Cheddar is smart as well. At home, when his food is served, as long as we don’t say the word “go” he patiently waits. On command, he jumps and shakes hands with us using his paw. When told, he can roll over too. He amuses us with his daily fetching of random things like slippers, or one of his toys. We love him with all our heart and he has become an essential member of our family.

Essay on My Pet in 300 words

My pet’s name is Mario. He is a two-year-old German Shepherd. I was in 6th grade when my father brought Mario home when he was just 45 days old. His cute little face was so fluffy I could just hug and kiss him all day. I bought a soccer ball, with which he and I used to play all day long. Being in school, I used to think about what is he doing right now or today I’ll take him for a walk to the park, where we will play soccer, etc.

His unconditional love has always been there as a stress reliever. His loyalty, unwavering support and companionship have been with me in my good and bad times. Now that he is an adult, I have taken all his responsibilities like feeding him, bathing him, taking him for walks, etc.

Mario once fell ill due to a cold, and whatever he was eating, he was not able to digest it. I got s worried that I took him to the vet, where he was given a penicillin shot as an antibiotic treatment. I was so scared that I held him with my hands and he was lying there, unconscious. Two hours later, he gained his consciousness and started licking my face. All my sorrow and sadness vanished away in a second, seeing his beautiful eyes and fluffy tail wavering all over the table.

Now that he is completely healthy, I take him for his walks every day, where he is always filled with excitement to explore the other world. As a loyal friend, my dog, Mario, has never demanded anything except for 3 times of meals and a walk. Whether it’s a game of fetch in the backyard or a stroll in the park, every shared moment is a treasure that adds richness to my life.

Both cats and dogs make wonderful pets, each offering unique qualities that appeal to different people. Cats are generally more independent animals. Dogs are social animals that thrive on companionship. They usually need more attention, exercise, and social interaction.

Dogs are known as the best friends of humans because they bring loyalty, joyous moments, unconditional love and life-teaching lessons. Some of the best dog breeds for domestication are German Shepherd, Siberian Huskey, Golden Retriever, Labrador, Beagle and Boxer.

Essay on My Pet Dog for Students

Essay writing is a crucial part of language studies. Not just that, it is also a mandatory question in the school exam. Essay writing is included in the exam to check students’ imagination and how well they can weave their thoughts into words. It also evaluates someone’s understanding of language and grammar. Many people love to have dogs as their pets as they are friendly, loyal and a great stress reliever. Students can get a free essay on My Pet Dog at Vedantu’s site.

An Introduction On My Pet Dog

The relationship between humans and dogs can’t be expressed in words. Dogs are loyal and friendly and their love is unconditional. Make friends with dogs and you will never feel lonely. A dog is a domestic animal. Dogs are harmless unless someone attacks them.

On the way back from school, I found a helpless hungry puppy lying on the roadside. I brought it home. It was obvious, my mother burst with anger on seeing this. But with time, my mother accepted him and allowed him to stay with us. He has sparkles in his eyes which attracted us. My sister called him Sheru and that’s how he got a new name. Sheru does not demand much but good food, frequent conversation, exercise and a little fun activity.

Sheru is a member of our family. He loves to play and jumps all around the house. Everyone in the family loves him dearly as he is a stress buster for us. He is loyal and is a protractor of our family. There are a lot of lessons for why everyone must have dogs at home. Life becomes easy when you have an anytime available mate like them. They provide sympathy in our bad times, behave like a bodyguard in times of crises and a loving sibling at the time when we are lonely.

Long Essay on Pet Dogs

Around the world, people keep various animals as their pets. Some are fond of cats, while others prefer fish aquariums, some love to play with cows in the cattle field. But by far, the most adored animal on the planet is a dog. It is called a man’s best friend for the same reason. The loyalty of a dog is unmatched and unbeatable. The best instinct in dogs is to protect their owner. In a world that is constantly changing and there is a rush in every aspect of life, pets provide a sense of security and peace for their owners. When the owner returns home, he/she finds a dog waiting and jumps towards them with a sense of joy and excitement. Dogs are an excellent company. A loyal confidante and undeniably cute. There are various instances in which dogs have shown their bravery, saved the lives of their owners. Some dogs, even though they aren't physically savage, still manage to rescue their owners from danger. The dogs can sense something wrong before it even happens. Animals are gifted with a sixth sense.

For introverted people, dogs tend to be the perfect companions. The company of a dog is what a person needs when he/she is sad or upset. Dogs provide love and support, and they accurately detect when their owner is sad or crying.

Studies have shown that being in company with a dog can result in less anxiety. For someone battling with anxiety disorder, I can vouch for it, that dogs are the greatest stress busters, and sometimes even replace therapy sessions. A long walk with a dog can do the trick.

Types of Dogs

Dogs come in a variety of breeds. The most famous dog breeds are Labrador retrievers, bulldogs, german shepherds and pugs.

Although all the dogs are extremely friendly, nothing can beat a labrador when it comes to friendliness. They are loving and understand when their owner is upset or happy. The German shepherds, Dobermann and the bulldogs are quite protective, they serve well if the owner is living alone. The smaller breeds like pug and chihuahua are cute and are not that hard to tame. Pomeranians with their long hair are a little hard to maintain, but still can be done.

In a real-life incident that happened in 2013, a mountain dog called Bella saved her owner out of a burning house. That's how protective and caring the dogs are.

The reason dogs are so protective when it comes to their owners is that they consider them a family. But for a dog to act right when it's being protective it needs to be trained. Most dogs act aggressively when they are protective.

Short Essay On My Pet Dog

Owning a dog is also a huge responsibility and commitment. Owning a dog means taking care of it like a family member. It is like having a younger sibling or a small child in the home that constantly needs care and attention.

Before owning a pet, one also needs to know how to train a dog as it is quite important.

The dogs also need timely health checkups and they need to be taken to the vet constantly. The diet should also be taken care of since most dogs are allergic to some things.

How Do Dogs Positively Affect Human Health?

Research has shown that, in the company of dogs, humans are more cheerful and happy. It is also known to reduce anxiety in humans as well as lower blood pressure. In severe cases, being in the company of dogs has cured depression and other mental health issues.

Health Around Dogs

Any scratches or bites from dogs can be painful and may even be infectious, especially when dogs don't feel safe around something or are scared. The dog injuries can be prevented by training them and also taking a handful of precautions. Regular visits to the vet clinic can be helpful to keep any dog's infections or mites on the bay.

When petting the dog make sure the hands are washed before and after. This will reduce the risk of infections if any.

The dogs also need hygienic surroundings. The food supplies and the dog utensils should be kept clean.

It is a human need to be loved and appreciated, and dogs do that pretty well. With the company of a dog, a human can seldom feel alone. Humans are more likely to recover from illnesses when they are in the company of a dog. The interesting fact is that owning a dog will increase one's physical activity and well-being, as you need to consistently take them out for a walk outdoors, it is a win-win for both the owner and the dog.

My Pet Dog Essay

Pets are the closest thing to humans. Humans can choose their pets based on their environment, their level of affection, and their busy life schedule. Pets that are commonly kept include dogs, cats, and birds. Here are a few sample essays on the topic ‘My Pet Dog’.

  • 100 Words Essay On My Pet Dog

Dogs are the best choice as a pet because they understand their owners very well and support them in whatever condition they are in. I decided to get a dog as a pet after realising my affection for both street dogs and other people's pet dogs. Dogs are regarded as a person's best friend. I was not sure which dog breed to choose, but in the end, I decided on the Pomeranian breed. I went to a pet store to check out the different coloured Pomeranian dogs. I was highly confused but at the end chose an adorable brown coloured Pomeranian. I named him 'Benji', he was only a month old when I took him home.

My Pet Dog Essay

Dogs are the only animals who love their owners without any reason. They start trusting their owners completely. On the day when my mother and I were going to purchase my pet dog, I was overcome with excitement. We both have the same love of animals, so I was sure she would be confused once she entered the pet store. She questioned me after entering the store as to why I wanted a dog only as a pet rather than a cat or bird, and I told her that I have a special affection for dogs.

Benefits | Dogs can help their owners with their mental health issues, can teach us new skills, can act as living examples of what their owners have taught them, and, most importantly, need regular exercise, which also helps us to maintain good cardiovascular health.

We discussed which dog to buy for the complete two hours before deciding on a white Persian dog with large black eyes and a short tail. I was staring at my new pet the entire time I was returning home and I named him Pluto. Finally, we ended up happily having a handsome dog that improved our health and mood and we love him dearly.

New Member Of Our Family

I decided, along with my mother, to purchase a puppy from a pet store on December 10, 2022. We went in the evening to finalise the puppy after she gave her permission. At the pet store's corner, I noticed a stunning white pomeranian sitting quietly and observing us. He was sitting with his gorgeous fluffy tail moving from left to right. We looked at many dogs, but this one grabbed my attention. I asked the shop owner if I could hold him in my hands, and he agreed. The dog was so kind that he began to play with me and lick me. After choosing to take him home with me, we proceed to buy his food, treats, leashes, toys, and shampoo.

My dog, Shero, accompanied me around the entire store. He seemed genuinely happy to be with me, which thrilled me. I had some concerns about whether he would be comfortable in the car and whether he would become anxious while driving, but nothing of the sort occurred. Instead, he reacted exactly the opposite of what I imagined. He sat next to me in the car the entire time we were travelling home and was enjoying the scenery. I got the feeling that he perhaps thought that he could now enjoy his life in the outside world.

First Experience At Home

After returning home, he initially felt some fear of unfamiliar objects, smells, and environment, but with time he got attached to everything. He was jumping on the bed, the couch, and playing with the toys we had bought for him. After some time, he began to bark, and as it was my first day with him, I was unaware that he did this when he was hungry. After finishing his meal, he slept for two to three hours. My family and I talked about his trainer while he was asleep so that he might learn new tasks that would make him stronger and more active, both of which are excellent for his health. I was staring at him while he slept and wondering how the atmosphere in the house had changed. The atmosphere in the home was now cheerful, joyful, and entertaining. He is now a member of our family.

Essay on My Pet Dog for Students and Children in 1000+ Words

Animals have a major role to play in balancing an environment . Apart from that, in certain respects, they are useful to humans. People love to have a lot of animals in their homes. Among them, the dog really is an animal that you can see “my pet” as a companion in many homes.

Pets are an immense gift to anyone’s life. They’re the only people that love us unconditionally. Pets still give us everything they have without waiting for much in exchange—the primary aim of every pet’s life to make their owners pleased.

Even the word ‘owner’ is growing today. People prefer their dogs to be children and be their guardians. This is how the bond with pets is increasing. People should not treat them worse than people. E.g., they’re celebrating their birthdays, have the matching outfits, and much more.

The canine has been a human partner since prehistoric days, so we find these dogs worldwide. There are hundreds of these breeds. However, every variation has one common factor, honesty , and fidelity to the lord.

My favorite pet dog

I believe that pets deserve it. Dogs are the most popular pet you can see in anyone’s location—the greatest friend of man and the most loyal animal, the canine. I love bits whenever it happens to my pet.

We got him once he was a kid, or we saw him develop into a big dog. Both my members of the family love them from all their souls. We love his dumb shenanigans, and without him, we can’t picture our lives. Well, we call him Bruno.

My family likes dogs very much. There are only a few dogs with various types in my neighborhood. Still, Bruno is the name of my favorite dog amongst all these breeds.

I chose him, along with his few distinctive attributes. Bruno refers to a popular dog breed named Labrador retriever. Bruno is a full-bodied chocolate-colored body with such a black border across the neck.

Bruno is my pet dog, and he is faithful , genuine, and very devoted to his owner. Bruno is quick to train.

In quite a short time, he learned to dive, comprehend, and follow my orders. He takes up my orders easily and executes them immediately. Bruno is a very healthy dog, guy.

My dad adopted Bruno while he was a child. His friend had given birth to pets, and they wanted to put the pups available for adoption. We’ve persuaded our dad to buy one for us.

Considering that they knew our families well, they readily decided. Little did we realize that after his arrival, our lives would forever change.

Bruno came in as a gift to our family. Belonging to a Labrador breed, he is black, and pure black tar. He became my companion as a puppy with his adorable little paws and eyes. We haven’t been able to stop gushing about this charm. My brothers and sisters used to compete with one another to have the most opportunity to enjoy with Bruno.

When my pet Bruno grew up, he learned a lot of tricks. We taught him to follow our orders, and he really knew two tricks. We enjoyed introducing him to friends and family in our community. I’ve always taken Bruno out with me since he loves to take a stroll on the lane.

Besides, my brothers and I have taken on the task of keeping Bruno tidy. We took turns each week to bathe him or clean him neatly. I recall getting a bow for him out of my pocket money. Bruno liked it, and he wagged his tail in happiness . Bruno has been here thru thick or thin, and we’ll be forever grateful to him for his dedication.

At midnight, the fire broke out during our home. He saw the risk that we were in. My pet dragged my quilt aside and kept me awake. He took me to a kitchen. To my utter surprise, I noticed that a heap with dry fuel was lying there, and then all the fire climbed to the roof, or at once, and the other house members climbed from sleep. They kept the fire under control in the next few minutes. This action of Bruno cherished us all the more.

I’m taking excellent care of him, and every day I bathe him with soap. I feed him with milk and wheat. Occasionally, I even give bones and skin. It is regarded as a family member. Any member of a household is respected and valued. Visitors who visited the house enjoy it, too.

Several proposals were made for me, but I’m not going to be aware of it at any time. Separation is now out of the question, as he reacts to my affection. He’s still by my side, and his faithfulness is unquestionable. My pet is really loyal to me.

My Pet Changed my Life

We did not realize what we’d learn until we got a pet dog. He changed things forever since Bruno came through our lives. Bruno has shifted the definition of allegiance to us. We have heard how this loyal companion has always served for our comfort and wellbeing.

Certainly, Bruno has made us stronger human beings. We are much more humane for animals today. There was one incident where the stray dogs will hurt a kitten, or to our delight, Bruno rescued the little kitten or took her home.

In many other words, we learned many things from my pet. He was shielding us while we sleep at night. He was trying to cheer us up if any of us was down. Bruno’s obedience has encouraged me a lot and is kind to my family. So, all the praise for improving our life goes to Bruno.

10 line on My Pet

  • The name of my pet dog is Bruno. That’s from the German Shepherds’ group.
  • He’s two years old, fluffy, black, and tan.
  • He’s going to be happy to see me once I come back from training.
  • It prevents our houses from intruders, particularly during the nights.
  • He spends much of his time with my dad or me.
  • He’s very patient with us, but he’s highly violent when he spots an outsider.
  • He’s going with my dad for morning hikes, and with me for evening hikes.
  • We’re feeding him with nutritious food, new milk, and poultry.
  • He likes to move, hop, and run. He’s been swamped all the time.
  • 10. When I get angry, my pet perks me up by kissing me and showering a lot of affection. I do enjoy him too much.

Pets are also a member of the house. They give the owners genuine affection. In reality, the word “keeper” is fading some days. People imagine their dogs to be their offspring and their own guardians. This is how the relationship with dogs has grown over the years. From honoring their special days to dressing them up in quirky clothing, we treat pets like children.

And all of them have held dogs as the companion of animals for some point in time. Dogs are the safest pet creatures you can hold. They are obedient to their owner & even supportive in their everyday tasks.

The obedience that a dog displays to its owner is the best lesson human beings can gain from them. They are the companions of men who are always true to them and in their good or poor days. Further, all they have to is a little piece of bread as well as a lot of affection.

My pet essay is an essential children’s essay subject. Essay composition is a talent that young people are increasingly cultivating by practice. It helps to develop a sound comprehension of the language and strengthens students’ writing skills. Hope you liked this essay on my pet.

Key Points to Remember When Writing an Essay on ‘My Pet’ for Class 1, 2 and 3 Children

Few lines on ‘my pet’ for children, short essay on ‘my pet’ for kids, long essay on ‘my pet’ for kids in english, what will your child learn by writing an essay on pets.

Growing up with a pet is the most wonderful experience. Having a constant buddy around to play with, children are most excited about having a pet at home. In fact, it is often the children who plead with their parents to adopt and bring home a pet. The pets, too, form a close sibling-like bond with the children of the house. So when it comes to writing about their pets, children will have several ideas to pen down. Let’s help them organise their thoughts and feelings and write an essay that will be engaging for the reader. Most children will be confident about this topic but may need a structure to help them articulate their ideas. There may also be some children who don’t have pets of their own and may have to write this essay from their imagination. These tips will help children write a few lines, small compositions and long essays on the topic of ‘My Pet’.

Children who have a pet may be full of ideas in their minds. But those who don’t have a pet at home will have to write based on their experience with someone who has pets, maybe a friend or a relative. When guiding a child on how to write an essay on pets, there are a few things you can ask them to incorporate in the write-up. Here are some key points that could help them write an impressive essay:

  • Start with an introduction about how animals are important to humankind.
  • Progress to the next step by stressing how bringing home a pet can be a different experience and contribute to one’s well-being.
  • Go on to describe which animal would be ideal to have as a pet.
  • Describe the qualities of the animal and how they came into your life.
  • Elaborate on the pet – name, behaviour and qualities.
  • Mention how you look after them and care for them.
  • Speak about how you spend time with the pet and the facilities you have made for the pet to feel safe at your home.
  • Speak about how popular the pet is in the neighbourhood.
  • Write about who the pet is closest to.
  • Conclude by stressing the importance of the pet’s presence at home and how it completes the family.

A short essay on ‘My Pet’ for a first-grader would entail writing a few descriptive lines about the pet. Here’s is an example of how to help your child write a few lines on the topic:

  • The pet I have is a dog, a man’s best friend.
  • We call him ‘Rafa’.
  • Rafa is a Labrador and white in colour and has a bushy tail with a black tip.
  • He eats pet food that we buy especially for him from the supermarket.
  • We have trained him to perform some actions like “Sit”, “Fetch the Ball,” and “Shake hands.”
  • We have a small kennel for him where he rests during the day when we are all away at school.
  • Once we come back home, we take him for a walk around our apartment complex.
  • He is the star of the apartment as everyone loves him. He is also playful with them.
  • Rafa is also our watchdog as he keeps a close eye on strangers who enter the apartment.
  • My dog is a part of my family, and we love him very much.

Students of class 2 are expected to display a higher level of writing proficiency. By now, children are familiar with linguistic aspects of English like grammar, punctuations and spelling. When asked to write about their pet, they would be required to compose a paragraph on the topic that would carry more weightage in terms of marks or points awarded. Here is a sample of an essay on ‘My Pet’ for Class-2 students:

A pet is like a family member. Having a pet is more like looking after a child, but pets cannot speak. If you shower them with love and affection, they will be most affectionate and loyal to you. My family and I always wanted a pet, so we got a cat. We call him ‘Tom’. Black and white in colour, Tom has a long tail that he curls when he’s hungry or wants us to cuddle him. We feed him pet food from a small bowl that we got for him. We take him for walks around our small bungalow, during which he loves climbing on our walls. Tom loves chasing mice and is scared of the dogs around our house. We love spending time with Tom, and he loves us too.

Children in the third grade will generally be expected to write a long essay on their pets. This might sound challenging but let’s make it simple for them. Guide them to split the topic into various points and then elucidate their thoughts to compose a long paragraph. Here’s a guide that will help your child write a long essay on ‘My Pet’.

Dogs are a man’s best friend. It is indeed true as dogs are the most loyal and friendly animals. My parents also love dogs. They both have had dogs as pets when they grew up. So, when we moved into our new home, the first thing that we did after setting up the house was to go and get a puppy.

We reached the animal rescue centre, and our eyes fell on a little puppy who was just two weeks old. It was a Golden Retriever, and we got him home immediately. We named him Marco and set up a kennel for his home. We placed him there and looked after him for the next few weeks till he became comfortable. Once he started moving and jumping around, he followed us just like every other puppy. He would wag his tail if he wanted to go out or just jump on us if he wanted to fall asleep.

Every night my father takes him out for a walk. Marco enjoys this time with my father and eagerly looks forward to it. Just when I am going to be back from school, Marco waits behind the door for me. As I enter, he jumps all over me to welcome me home. He gives my mother a cuddle when he finds her relaxing on the chair when she is tired. Marco is a part of our family, and we love him very much. He has made us better human beings by showing his affection through actions and words.

Writing an essay on ‘My Pet’ will help children understand how to express their thoughts about a pet and write in a manner that will make an impact. Expression, writing creatively, and structuring are the most important takeaways from this essay. Children will also get a deeper understanding of caring for animals. The ones who don’t have a pet at home will be encouraged to think creatively and write based on their observations and imagination.

Encourage your child to follow these tips and read through these essays before writing their own essay on their pet. This beginner’s guide will help children channelise their ideas and ace the skill of essay writing. Children will learn the depth and nuances of creative writing, which will help them not just in the English subject but other subjects too.

One of the best things about having a pet dog is the unconditional love they give. They are always excited to see you, wagging their tails and showering you with kisses. Whether you’ve had a good day or a bad one, your dog will always be there to cuddle with you and make you feel better. Having a dog by your side can make you feel less lonely and more connected to the world around you. Pets dogs are not just great company; they can also improve your physical and mental health.

In return for all the love and joy they bring into our lives, it’s important to take good care of our pet dogs. This includes providing them with proper food, shelter, exercise, and regular veterinary care. In this article, we will provide you essay on my dog.

500 Word Essay on My Pet Dog

From the moment I first laid eyes on that bundle of golden fur, I knew we were meant to be best friends for life. Cody, my golden retriever, has been an unconditional source of love, loyalty, and laughter for over a decade now. He is truly one of the greatest companions I could ever ask for. Cody came into my life as an 8-week-old puppy, with the most adorable teddy bear face and warm, curious eyes that could melt your heart. But don’t let that sweet look fool you – he was a rambunctious ball of energy from day one. My family and I spent months patiently potty training him, teaching him obedience commands, and redirecting his friendly puppy nipping. It was challenging but rewarding work.

As Cody grew into an adult dog, his true golden retriever personality blossomed. He is the gentlest, most affectionate creature, always eager to shower us with wet kisses and snuggle up for belly rubs at a moment’s notice. With his eternally wagging tail and bright, inviting expression, Cody makes an immediate connection with anyone he meets. One of the things I love most about golden retrievers is their eager-to-please demeanor and high intelligence. Cody lives to make his human family happy. He studies our faces and actions intently, following commands and picking up on our routines with ease. We’ve been able to train him to do all sorts of tricks and tasks – from fetching objects to cleaning up his toys to even pulling off the perfect “play dead.”

At the same time, Cody has a wonderful goofy, playful side that keeps us laughing every day. He gets intense and bouncy when he wants to play tug-of-war or fetch. He makes us chuckle by tilting his head inquisitively at new noises. And sometimes he just does silly things like drooling while he sleeps or getting the classic “zoomies” for no reason. Having a dog like Cody has been an amazing source of joy but also an incredible lesson in unconditional love, patience, responsibility, and living for each moment. Dogs don’t dwell on the past or future – they are fully present. Cody takes the good and bad of each day in stride. Even if I’m frustrated after a long workday, Cody is always ecstatic to greet me with a wagging tail when I walk through the door, his only care being that I’m home.

Cody’s deep loyalty and steadfast companionship has helped me through some tough times in life. He has an incredible intuition for emotions and always seems to know when I need an extra cuddle or kiss on a difficult day. No matter what, I know Cody’s unconditional love for me will never waver. That’s something special that every dog owner understands about the beautiful human-animal bond. After over a decade together, Cody is now an elderly dog with graying fur. But his warm, loving spirit and puppy-like zest for life remain as strong as ever. He reminds me daily to embrace each new experience with that same innocence, loyalty and joy. Cody is more than just a pet – he is a true friend for life. I feel so blessed to be able to share my life with such an amazing, loving animal.

800 Word Essay on My Pet Dog

I was walking home from class, huddled against the crisp wind, when I noticed a scruffy little dog sitting all alone under a streetlamp. His big brown eyes were wide with caution yet brimming with hope as our gazes locked. In that moment, I knew he needed me as much as I needed him. I cautiously approached, offering a few soothing words and holding out a hand to sniff. Rather than cowering or running away as I expected, the pup seemed to appraise me with wisdom beyond his years. After a moment’s pause, he tentatively nudged my hand with his cold, wet nose. My heart melted as I scooped him up into my jacket, feeling his warmth pressed against me. So began my journey with Tommy, the most remarkable indie pup I’ve ever known.

From the start, Tommy proved to be incredibly smart, obedient, and adaptable despite his life on the streets. Within a couple weeks, he had adjusted seamlessly to living indoors, grasping potty training and basic commands. But he was much more than an ordinary pup. Tommy always seemed to sense my shifting emotions, responding with the perfect mixture of playfulness, affection, and calm presence as each situation required.

His emotional intelligence allowed us to form a profound, unbreakable bond. Tommy became my shadow, greeting me with excited tail-wags and sloppy kisses whenever I walked through the door after class or work. He loved to snuggle up on my lap as I studied, seemingly content to just soak up my company and affection. During stressful periods, Tommy’s warm, grounding presence and deep brown eyes could instantly subdue my anxiety and remind me of what really mattered most. Despite being on his own at such a young age, Tommy never developed behavioral issues like excessive barking, aggression, or separation anxiety that many strays struggle with. Instead, he showered everyone he met with endless puppy energy and enthusiasm, his whole body seeming to vibrate with wriggling excitement when offered a pat or a treat. Even kids, strangers, and other pets were instantly accepted as friends in Tommy’s eyes.

As an indie mix, Tommy’s exact breed makeup was anyone’s guess. His scruffy tan and white coat gave him a coyote-like appearance. His tall, pointed ears and muscular build hinted at some terrier ancestry. But most striking were his wildly mismatched eyes – one a warm brown, the other an icy blue-gray. Whatever his origins, Tommy was simply one-of-a-kind. He loved to chase squirrels and birds into the brush, requiring me to wrestle him out of dense bushes or scale trees to retrieve my muddy, leaf-covered pup. He also had a bad habit of counter-surfing to swipe any tempting human food left unattended. More than once, I returned home to find him proudly licking his chops surrounded by a mess of scattered wrappers and crumbs.

But his best trick was his fearless composure around larger animals. Despite his small stature, Tommy never hesitated to strike up play with bigger dogs at the park or boldly approach horses. He seemed to lack any sense of self-preservation or awareness of his diminutive size. I’ll never forget the image of Tommy emphatically barking up at an enormous, bewildered draft horse while I chased him in mortified embarrassment.

As the years passed, Tommy transformed from a pup into a more dignified, albeit slightly mischievous adult dog. His protectiveness over me became more pronounced as his youthful enthusiasm mellowed slightly with age. Tommy appointed himself as a watchdog of sorts, keeping a keen eye on anyone who came by the house. Yet he never lost his loving, gentle demeanor with people and furry friends. Now Tommy has been by my side for nearly a decade, his face graying around the muzzle. With each passing year, I’m reminded how lucky I was to cross paths with this spunky, loving canine on that fateful autumn night. Tommy filled a void in my life that I never knew needed filling until he arrived.

From his endless affection and patience to his silly antics and misbehavior, Tommy has brought me more laughter, companionship, and joy than I ever could have imagined. Gazing into those mismatched but warm, trusting eyes, I know our paths were truly destined to cross that night under the streetlamp. Tommy will forever be one of the greatest gifts the universe has blessed me with – my furry little soul mate in a scruffy tan and white coat.

Essay on My Pet Dog- FAQs

What’s the best breed for a family pet dog.

The best breed depends on your family’s lifestyle and preferences. However, some breeds known for their gentle and friendly nature include Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, Beagles, and Bulldogs.

How much exercise does a pet dog need?

Dogs require daily exercise to stay healthy and happy. The amount of exercise needed varies depending on the breed, age, and size of the dog. Generally, dogs should have at least 30 minutes to an hour of physical activity each day, which can include walks, playtime, and mental stimulation.

What should I feed my pet dog?

A balanced diet is essential for your dog’s health. High-quality commercial dog food that is appropriate for your dog’s age, size, and activity level is usually recommended. You can also include fresh fruits and vegetables as treats or supplements, but be cautious about feeding them human foods that may be harmful to dogs.

How do I house train my pet dog?

Consistency, patience, and positive reinforcement are key to house training your dog. Establish a routine for feeding, potty breaks, and crate training. Supervise your dog closely indoors and take them outside frequently, especially after meals and naps. Reward your dog with praise and treats when they eliminate outdoors.

How can I prevent behavioral problems in my pet dog?

Proper socialization, training, and providing mental and physical stimulation can help prevent behavioral issues in dogs. Enroll your dog in obedience classes, provide plenty of toys and activities to keep them engaged, and ensure they receive enough exercise and attention.

How do I keep my pet dog healthy?

Regular veterinary check-ups, vaccinations, and preventive care are essential for maintaining your dog’s health. Practice good hygiene by grooming your dog regularly, keeping their ears clean, and brushing their teeth. Watch for any signs of illness or discomfort and address them promptly.

What’s the best way to introduce a new pet dog to my home?

Slow and supervised introductions are key when bringing a new dog into your home, especially if you already have other pets. Allow them to sniff and interact with each other in a controlled environment, and provide separate spaces for each pet initially. Be patient and give them time to adjust to each other’s presence.

My Pet Dog Essay – 200 words

My pet dog is a pug. It is fawn in colour and has a small built. We have named it Swigi. It has been with us since the last 2 years. I still remember the day me and my sister went to the pet shop with my father to bring it home. I somehow wanted to pet a cat but my elder sister, Riya is almost crazy about dogs and was adamant that we get a dog as a pet. Other members of my family also believed that keeping a dog as a pet was a better choice and so a cute little one month old pug came home with us that day and became a part of our family.

Though everyone in the family takes care of Swigi, my sister is especially particular about its cleanliness, vaccinations and eating habits. We make Swigi bath twice a week. It is actually my favourite time of the week. We take it to the terrace and bathe him with a pipe. We make sure it gets its food on time and goes for stroll twice every day. Swigi also accompanies us everywhere we go.

Swigi is quite an active dog and loves playing with ball. It is super fun playing with it.

My Pet Dog Essay – 300 words

My pet dog, Barney is a Labrador. It is light brown in colour and has a strong built. Having a Labrador as a pet serves a double purpose. You do not only get a great friend who is always ready to play with you but it also acts as a security guard for your home. Our home is a more secure place because of the presence of Barney.

Participation in Dog Show

Many people bring home pets and forget about them. We aren’t among those. We take good care of Barney and always love involving it in different activities. It has been with us since the last 5 years and we have made it participate in three dog shows since then. We got it trained for these shows and it made us proud by winning prizes in all these events. At the time of the first event, Barney was just 10 months old. It was hyper active and won the hurdle race. During the second event, it was 2 years old won the bird hunt game. In the third event, it again participated in a race and came third. Barney was 4 years old then.

My Pet Dog is Very Vigilant

Barney remains vigilant all the time. It barks at the sound of any hustle near the home especially at night. It has a strong smelling sense and grows suspicious if it experiences any strange or unfamiliar smell. Dogs are extremely faithful and want nothing but the best for their masters. Barney is no exception. It is very protective about our family and thus guards our house at all times.

I love spending time with Barney. It makes me forget all my tensions and worries. It stands near the front door waiting for me when it is time for me to come home from school and wags its tail as soon as it sees me. We are both extremely delighted to see each other.

My Pet Dog Essay – 400 words

I have an adorable Dachshund as my pet. It is an extremely lively dog and always keeps us on toes whenever we are out to play with it. We have named it Buddy and it indeed is our best Buddy. Dachshunds are very friendly and cheerful. Buddy has gelled along extremely well with our family and loves all of us dearly. We also love it with all our heart.

My Pet Dog’s Features

With their long and low bodies, Dachshunds look quite different from the other breeds of dogs. Here is how my Buddy looks like and behaves:

  • Buddy is chocolate brown in colour and is long haired.
  • It is a miniature sized Dachshund.
  • It has a very strong smelling power.
  • It has a very pleasant and friendly disposition. It befriends all our friends, neighbours and relatives who come home and is eager to play with them.
  • It is also very brave and clever. It always remains cautious about who roams around in the street next to our house and barks at any suspicious or unfamiliar person around.
  • It is also very curious about things.
  • It is Fun Playing with Buddy

Dachshunds are hyper active and always keen on playing different games. Buddy particularly loves playing with the ball. So every evening we take it out for around half an hour and indulge him in this activity. It is not only fun for Buddy but an extremely amazing experience for me and my brother too.

Buddy also loves travelling. We often go for weekend outings and Buddy is always super excited to go along with us. Since it is small in size, it is not a hassle to take it along. It does not even require much food which makes it quite travel-friendly.

It has been a year that we have brought him home and our friends and cousins have started visiting us all the more since then. A cheerful soul that it is, everyone is fond of it and wants to spend time with it.

We mostly keep it tied with a chain when it is home. My mother particularly makes it a point that Buddy is tied with its chain near the balcony. This is because the moment we untie it, it runs around the house breaking every single thing that comes its way.

Pet dogs are fun to be around and especially if it is a Dachshund, you can never get bored. Each day seems exciting and fun in its company. Buddy is the lifeline of our family.

My Pet Dog Essay – 500 words

When I was young, we had a Doberman as a pet. It became a part of my family even before I was born. So, I knew him from the time I was born. Doberman have a strong sixth sense and always remain vigilant. However, you can see their soft side when they are in the company of little kids and I have experienced this side of my pet Doberman whom we lovingly called, Bruno.

Why My Parents Decided to Pet a Dog?

My parents shifted to Goa soon after their marriage. They found a house on rent. It was a beautiful house that was well-suited for a family of two. However, the only problem was that the house stood aloof. It was at a distance from the other houses in the vicinity. In order to ensure the safety and security of my mother as my father went to the office, it was decided to bring home a pet dog. They decided to go for a Doberman as it is a fearless, brave and sturdy dog. Owing to this nature, Doberman dogs are also preferred in police and military services all around the world.

My mother was already fond of dogs and Bruno became her best friend in the new city. Since, Doberman require exercise every day, she took it for walk twice every day. My dad also enjoyed its company. Bruno grew extremely fond of me as soon as I was born and guarded me all the time. It also played with me.

Why We Had to Give Away Our Doberman?

I was extremely attached to Bruno and so was my mother. However, we had to give it away as my father got a good job opportunity in the United States and we had to shift there for two years. With heavy heart, we gave him to one of our neighbours who gladly took it home. We often called them up to ask for Bruno’s well being.

How I Found An Indian Spitz?

We shifted back to India after two years however, this time to a different city. I wanted to keep a pet dog again but my mother was not keen on it. However, it seemed like God heard my wish and fulfilled it.

One day when I was walking back home from school, I saw a Spitz struggling to get its leg out of a cycle tyre. I immediately went to help it. It was someone’s pet but seemed like it had lost its way. I helped it get rid of the tyre and gave a pat on its head. Spitzs are known to be quite affectionate. It began licking my arm. I looked around for its master but could not find anyone. As I began walking home, it started following me. I kept taking it back to the place I had found it for weeks in the hope to find its master but did not find anyone. Since then, it stays with us. I have named it Jiggles.

Dogs are very loving and caring. They shower love and are faithful to their masters. It is an amazing feeling to have a dog as a pet.

My Pet Dog Essay – 600 words

I have a pet dog named Roger. It is a German shepherd and it has been a part of my family since the last 3 years. It is very warm, friendly and playful. However, outsiders often find it dangerous. This is because of its built and colour. It is vigilant and guards our house all the time.

Why I wanted to keep a Pet Dog?

Everyone in my family is fond of Roger. We all treat him like a family member. We cannot imagine life without him. However, I still remember the time when I wanted to keep a pet dog and all my family members were against the idea. I was 8 years old that time and my friend, Aanya owned a very cute little pug. She always brought it to the park. Whenever I visited her place, I saw her playing with it. Both of them looked so happy and loved each other’s company. Many a times, I called Aanya to play with me at my home but she refused saying she was busy feeding or bathing Roger. I felt really bad and wished that I too had a dog as a company. It is then that I decided to bring home a pet dog.

How I struggled to get My Pet Dog?

I knew I wanted a dog as a pet but I wasn’t aware that it would be such a struggle for me to convince my parents to get one home. As soon as, the thought of keeping a pet dog came into my mind, I rushed to my mom and told her that I want to get one home. My mother just laughed and dismissed my request with a pat on my cheek. I repeated my wish and she again took it lightly. This infuriated me and I told her that I really wanted a pet. It was then that my mother realized that I was serious about it. So she made me sit and explained as to why we could not keep a pet.

Both my parents are working. Though my grandparents live with us, they are old and taking care of a pet would have been too much to ask from them. Besides, my brother was a toddler then and my mother feared that he might catch infection. She tried to explain all these points to me. But I did not listen to any of her explanations. I went to my grandmother and requested her to convince mom to get a pet dog. My grandmother also tried to explain the same points. However, I kept convincing her for days and she finally agreed to take care of the dog for half the day until I came home from school. The rest was all my responsibility.

Somehow, I also convinced my father. Since he has a liking for dogs, convincing him was not that difficult. So finally my mother had to agree. We went to a nearby pet shop and my heart went drooling over this 2 months old German shepherd who was sleeping peacefully in a small cage. I knew at once that I wanted to keep him.

Roger won everyone’s Heart

Roger was so small and cute that almost everyone in my family fell in love with it as soon as I brought him home. My mother who detested the idea of bringing a pet home also found it cute and grew fond of it over the time. Dogs love babies and are very protective about them. Roger and my younger brother thus became friends almost instantly. Super excited about including Roger in the family, I told all my friends about it the same day.

Roger has become an inseparable part of our lives today and I just love it. Dogs are really adorable. I feel that everyone should keep a pet dog.

Despite the challenges and responsibilities that come with pet ownership, the invaluable lessons and companionship they offer make it a worthwhile endeavor.

500 Words Essay on Having a Pet

The joy and responsibility of having a pet.

Pets, in many ways, can be considered as an extension of our family. They provide companionship, emotional support, and can even contribute to improved physical health. However, owning a pet also comes with significant responsibilities and potential challenges.

The Psychological Benefits of Pet Ownership

The psychological benefits of having a pet are well-documented. Research indicates that pets can help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. Their constant companionship can alleviate feelings of loneliness and isolation, fostering a sense of belonging and purpose. For instance, the act of petting a dog or a cat has been shown to release oxytocin, a hormone associated with stress reduction and mood enhancement.

Physical Health Advantages

Beyond mental health, pets also contribute to physical health. Regular walks with a dog, for example, promote cardiovascular health and fitness. Pets can also help their owners maintain a regular sleep schedule, as they typically require feeding, exercise, and bathroom breaks at consistent times.

Life Skills Acquired

Owning a pet can also impart valuable life skills, particularly for young adults. The responsibility of caring for another living being can foster empathy, compassion, and responsibility. It also provides an opportunity to learn about the cycle of life and death, helping to develop emotional resilience.

The Challenges of Pet Ownership

Despite these benefits, pet ownership is not without its challenges. The financial costs can be significant, encompassing food, veterinary care, grooming, and potential property damage. Pets also require time and attention, which can be difficult for busy individuals or families. Moreover, pets can limit spontaneity, as their needs often require planning and cannot be easily delegated.

Choosing the Right Pet

Choosing the right pet is a crucial step in ensuring a positive pet ownership experience. This decision should be based on lifestyle, living situation, financial capability, and personal preference. For example, a dog may be a poor choice for someone with a busy schedule or limited living space, while a cat or a fish may be a more suitable option.

In conclusion, owning a pet can be a rewarding experience, offering numerous psychological and physical health benefits. However, it is not a decision to be taken lightly, as pets require significant time, attention, and financial resources. Prospective pet owners should carefully consider their lifestyle and capabilities before welcoming a pet into their home. Ultimately, the joy and companionship pets offer can greatly enrich our lives, making the challenges worthwhile.

Preliminary (PET) Writing Sample Tests

Writing can be a scary thing for B1 learners, but with some training the Preliminary (PET) writing doesn’t have to make you run and hide. The important thing at B1 is to be clear, consistent and organised. You don’t need to write the next Charles Dickens novel, you just have to complete the task with good basic grammar, vocabulary, organisation and a little touch of style.

Here we’ve got some top tips for the Preliminary (PET) writing paper and two sample tests for you to use as practice at home or in the classroom. Each one could be used for PET for schools or for the regular adult exam.

writing test

What are the different types of writing for B1 Cambridge?

The first part of the Cambridge B1 writing exam is an email. You will read an email that received from an English friend or family member. Next to this email, there are notes to include in your answer. You must answer the email in 100 words, including all the information from the notes. For more about how to write the perfect B1 PET Writing Part 1, take a look at our post about emails .

The second part of the writing exam has two choices, an article or a story. Each one should be 100 words, but you only write one of them, not both. Some people prefer to practise one type of writing a lot to make it perfect, but it’s always a good idea to be comfortable with both. Sometimes the topic of one writing is strange, so you may prefer the other one. If you only know how to write one type, this becomes a problem.

Top tips for Preliminary (PET) writing

These tips will help you maximise the opportunity for points in the Cambridge writing criteria. Each writing is given a mark out of 5 in Content, Communicative Achievement, Organisation and Language.

  • Answer the question (Content) – You wouldn’t believe how many people don’t include all the necessary content in their answers. Part 1 is very controlled and has four notes along the side of each input text. In order to score points in the Content mark, you must clearly include answers to all four notes. For example, if the note say “suggest” , pointing at a comment about what restaurant you’d like to go to, suggest a restaurant. It seems obvious, but it’s the easiest way to both lose and gain points. In Part 2, you’ll have a couple of content points in the article and less in the story, but you still need to stick to the topic. For example, if the story is about a day at the beach, don’t write about a birthday party.
  • Use paragraphs (Organisation) – Another easy fix, but one that can seriously affect the Organisation mark. Even though the text is only 100 words, there should generally be 2-3 paragraphs, clearly separated using a line gap or indentation.
  • Write the correct writing (Content, Communicative Achievement) – If it’s an email, it needs to look like an email with a simple “Hi” and “See you soon!” at the beginning and end. If it’s an article, it should have a title. If it’s a story, it should have a beginning, middle and end. The tone and style of each writing is slightly different too. Look at examples and consider what style is used.
  • Punctuate (Organisation, Language) – Sometimes something as seemingly insignificant as a comma can completely change a writing. Be careful with sentences that are long, confusing and connected together with commas. Make sure you are finishing sentences when they are grammatically complete and not using incorrect punctuation.
  • Use the past (Language) – To show you know B1 grammar, it’s important to use the past. In almost every writing, you will have the opportunity to use the past to talk about something that happened to you. Don’t forget to study the irregular verbs!
  • Use some modal verbs (Language) – Another area of B1 language is modal verbs. Make a recommendation with “should” or talk about possibility with “can” or “can’t” . It’s not advanced language, but it’s something that shows you know B1 level English.
  • Use a relative clause (Language) – If you want to score top points in Language, you have to attempt some complex grammar. Using subordinate clauses like relative clauses is a good way to do this. A sentence like “My brother, who lives in Miami, is going to visit me in Spain this summer” is a great way to include more complex grammar in your writing.
  • Use basic linking words (Organisation, Language) – At B1, you don’t need to use a huge variety of linking words, but you should use “and” , “so” , “but” , “because” and possibly a few other more advanced ones like “however” , “although” and “also” . These should be used throughout all the writings.
  • Make it interesting (Communicative Achievement) – You don’t need to be an expert writer to write an interesting text. For example, there’s a big difference between a story where the school closes because of a flood (interesting) and a day you went to school and did an exam (not interesting). The same applies to articles, if you write an article about travel and you talk about going on an adventure in Hawaii, it’s more interesting than going to the local swimming pool every day.
  • Keep it simple (Everything) – Remember that it’s a B1 writing and in order to pass or even get high marks, you don’t need to make it complicated. Use the language you know to write the best possible writing within the expectations of the task. Don’t be afraid to attempt some complex things, but also make sure you do the basics well.

The materials

Here are two full Preliminary (PET) writing sample tests. These have been designed in the same format as official exams to practise and improve in preparation for the B1 writing exam. Remember that the time limit to complete both parts of the Preliminary (PET) Writing exam is 45 minutes.

Everything you need to prepare for a puppy, according to experts

There are tons of puppy products out there — we’re breaking down the ones you actually need.

We’re celebrating National Pet Week at NBC Select by sharing our favorite pet products. Shop puppy supplies, kitten essentials and more on our pets homepage .

As the proud mother of a puppy, I can attest that nothing emotionally prepares you for the moment those little paws step into your home for the first time. Sure, there’s getting used to a new routine and mourning the shoes that now double as chew toys . However, it’s the immediate, all-encompassing love you feel for your fur baby that really catches you by surprise.

Thankfully, there are many ways to physically prepare your home for your puppy’s arrival and ensure that your adjustment to pet parenthood is as smooth and as safe as possible. Getting started can feel dizzying: what type of food will they need? What kind of crate works best (and looks good too)? Are there special dog treats to use for training? To help you avoid endless internet searches and decision fatigue, we spoke to veterinarians and dog trainers to create a complete and concise puppy parent checklist.

Everything you need to prepare for a puppy

Below, we’ve used expert guidance to round up the essentials for any puppy parent, including tips from experts Andrea Arden, founder and director of Andrea Arden Dog Training, and Dr. Judy Morgan, an integrative veterinarian and owner of Dr. Judy Morgan’s Naturally Healthy Pets . Our experts share the best tools to keep your puppy safe and happy as they navigate their new home, advice for successful house training and staying balanced during this transition.

Crates and playpens

In your dog’s younger, exploratory years, confined spaces like crates and playpens are essential methods of supervision. While you may swear to keep a watchful eye over your pup at all times, even the smallest task, such as grabbing something in a different room, leaves enough time for your dog to get into trouble, says Arden. When your puppy matures, a positive relationship with their crate can also make instances when you’re away from home much easier, says Morgan.

Best dog crate: Fable Crate

Fable Dog Crate

Fable Dog Crate

When looking for a crate for my puppy, I knew that I wanted to invest in a high-quality product that fit the style of my home. I tried this Fable Crate — which won an NBC Select Pet Award — and liked that it felt sleek and modern. But it was the crate’s durability, secure latching mechanism and ability to double as a side table that I loved above all.

I chose the signature wood finish with an acrylic gate in the medium size for my puppy. If that’s not the right fit for your personal style, Fable has color (for the gate and wood finish) and size options to make your pick feel custom. If you’re still lost, any crate that’s big enough for your dog to stand up, turn around and lie down fully stretched on their side is a good option, says Morgan. If you choose an option that’s too large, your puppy is more likely to go to the bathroom on one end and sleep on the other, which reduces the crate’s potty training capabilities, says Arden.

Best playpen: Regalo Pet Products 4-in-1 Play Yard Configurable Dog Gate

Regalo Pet Products 4-in-1 Play Yard Configurable Dog Gate

Regalo Pet Products 4-in-1 Play Yard Configurable Dog Gate

Playpens serve the same safety purposes as crates while allowing for increased roaming space, says Morgan. Arden recommends this one from Regalo because it sits directly on the floor and doesn’t provide any leverage for puppies attempting to climb out. You can either configure the product’s six panels into a confined playspace or use them as a gate to keep your puppy out of certain spaces in your home, according to the brand.

Collars, leashes and harnesses

While collars, leashes and harnesses can seem like fun opportunities to accessorize your puppy, your dog’s equipment is what you use to keep them safe on the street, so focus on that rather than the color, says Arden.

Best harness: SENSE-ation Dog Harness

SENSE-ation Dog Harness

SENSE-ation Dog Harness

When looking for a harness, Arden recommends choosing figure eight-shaped options with leash attachments at the front as they “tend to discourage pulling without hurting the dog,” she says. Arden is a fan of this one from Sense-ation, which comes in nine sizes, ranging from mini to extra-large, and a variety of bright colors.

Best collar: If It Barks Hemp Martingale Dog Collar

If It Barks Hemp Martingale Dog Collar

If It Barks Hemp Martingale Dog Collar

Even if you plan on sticking to harnesses, you should still get your dog used to wearing a collar, says Arden. They serve as identification in the event that you’re separated from your pup and, if their leash or harness malfunctions mid-walk, a collar is an added security measure that can help you pull them back to safety. My puppy wears this hemp option from If It Barks, which offers tons of options for customization. After picking the width and neck size that work best for your pup, you can choose the material of the collar’s buckle and the number of leash attachments you’d like. Finally, for an additional $13, you can have your pup’s name, your address, and any other contact information engraved in the font of your choice.

Best leash: If It Barks Hemp Dog Leash

If It Barks Hemp Dog Leash

If It Barks Hemp Dog Leash

In addition to a sturdy fabric, “the [clip] that attaches to the leash to the collar or harness is really important because it’s the main source of being connected to the dog,” says Arden. “Make sure it isn’t easy for you to flick with your thumb [so] your dog isn’t accidentally unattached from you.” She also recommends opting for a six-foot leash over a shorter option, allowing your puppy to explore within a safe distance. I use this one from the North Carolina-based dog brand If It Barks. It matches my puppy’s collar and has a traffic grab handle for an extra dose of safety.

Food accessories

Choosing the right food for your puppy starts with careful considerations like breed, health concerns and your vet’s recommendations. Here are some products that can help make mealtime as mess-free as possible.

Best dog bowl: Petmate No Spill Bowl

Petmate No Spill Bowl

Petmate No Spill Bowl

Your puppy’s playful energy won’t stop at mealtime, meaning there’s a good chance that their food and water will end up on your floors. “I do think that non-slip bowls are a godsend for puppy parents," says Arden. “Petmate’s No Spill Bowl is really great for goofy puppies because it’s very hard for them to tip over. If you want to go for the extreme — no tipping, no splashing — the Petmate one is best.”

Best puppy food utensils: Ginbear Suction Bowls and Utensils

Ginbear Suction Bowls and Utensils

Ginbear Suction Bowls and Utensils

My puppy’s food consists of a dry kibble base with wet toppers, which means mealtime results in many dirty dishes. I initially designated a few pieces of my own silverware as dog-only utensils, but that pile kept growing and I knew something needed to change. Purchasing these silicone bowls and utensils has made all of the difference; I now have meal prep items that are easy to clean and clearly identifiable as my pup’s. Each set comes with a suction, no-spill bowl, a spoon and a fork.

Dog toys and treat dispensers

“Just like small children, [puppies] learn through play and interaction,” says Morgan. That means toys play a crucial role in your new dog’s development. Boredom is also a leading cause of poor puppy behavior, meaning that selecting the right toys can actually assist you on your house training journey, says Morgan.

Supervising your puppy’s playtime is imperative, even with the safest toys. Morgan strongly recommends avoiding a toy most pet parents own: the tennis ball. “The covering abrades the enamel on [your dog’s] teeth and is a choking hazard when swallowed,” she says. Below are some safe and stimulating toy options that have the green light from both our experts and my pup.

Best treat dispenser: PetSafe Buddy Twist & Treat

PetSafe Buddy Twist & Treat

PetSafe Buddy Twist & Treat

Both Morgan and Arden highly recommend including treat dispensing toys in your pup’s collection because they are great ways to keep them busy while also mentally stimulated. PetSafe’s Buddy Twist & Treat is Arden’s favorite because it has adjustable treat pockets that are rewarding for dogs of any age. “If it’s a baby puppy, you’re going to make the opening bigger because they’re not yet toy savvy,” says Arden. “If you have a more mature dog, you can make the opening smaller to make it more challenging.”

Best dog toy for anxious puppies: Snuggle Puppy

Snuggle Puppy

Snuggle Puppy

When I decided that I’d be crate training my puppy, I poked around TikTok for things other puppy parents did to ease anxieties throughout the night. I came across this Snuggle Puppy, which uses a battery-powered beating “heart” and heating packs to mimic the feeling of sleeping next to another dog, according to the brand. It has become his nightly snuggle buddy — and a godsend for helping me get a few more hours of sleep.

Best dog toy for aggressive chewers: Happy Hands Happy Dogs Knots of Fun

Happy Hands Happy Hounds Knots of Fun

Happy Hands Happy Hounds Knots of Fun

Every puppy loves to chew and mine is no exception. We spend most of our time playing tug with rope toys, however, my pup’s energy and tiny teeth mean that I often get nipped in the process. Arden says this colorful, fleece option from Happy Hands Happy Dogs helps eliminate accidental biting, as “it’s long enough for playing with puppies who don’t yet have good impulse control or eye-mouth coordination.”

Best dog toy for teething puppies: Nylabone Puppy Teething Chew Toys

Nylabone Puppy Teething Chew Toys

Nylabone Puppy Teething Chew Toys

If your pup is entering their teething stage, you know how hard it is to find a toy that can satisfy their urge to chew (and keep them away from chewing household items like furniture). This durable nylon chew toy is one of our favorite dog toys for puppies because the grooves help massage their gums and provide relief. Similarly, you can roll up a damp washcloth, freeze it and give it to your dog, which helps reduce biting and chewing, experts told us.

Best pet camera: Furbo 360

Furbo 360

Another NBC Select Pet Awards winner , the Furbo 360 pet camera and treat dispenser is a great way to keep tabs on your new puppy while you’re not home. It rotates 360 degrees, which lets you see more of your space than fixed-angle pet cameras. You can use the brand’s proprietary app to monitor your pet on a live feed, talk to them using two-way audio and throw them a treat (as long as you remember to keep it stocked). It also has night vision and automatic pet tracking, which keeps your pet in the camera’s view, according to the brand. Plus, the app allows multiple people to monitor the Furbo, so your partner, friends or roommates can tune in if they’re dog sitting.

When it comes to grooming your pup , there are a few tasks — nail trimming and haircuts, for example — that you can leave to the professionals. However, you should definitely plan on doing some daily maintenance on your pup to ensure that they remain squeaky clean. Plus, Morgan says the close contact between you and your dog while brushing their teeth or giving them a bath doubles as quality bonding and trust-building time. Below are some must-haves for your at-home grooming kit.

Best puppy shampoo: Burt’s Bees Oatmeal Dog Shampoo

Burt's Bees Oatmeal Dog Shampoo

Burt’s Bees Oatmeal Dog Shampoo

When it comes to bathing your puppy , Morgan recommends mild shampoos made for dogs with sensitive skin. “Do not use human shampoos, especially baby shampoos, on puppies,” she says. Arden lists oatmeal (found in this option from Burt’s Bees) as a favored ingredient. Baths should not be a daily occurrence, though, because “the oils and normal bacteria that live on [your pup’s] skin are an important barrier against infection,” says Morgan. If you notice food or dirt on your puppy’s coat, use grooming wipes to spot clean between bath days.

Best grooming accessory for anxious puppies: Minnya Pet Grooming Table Mat

Minnya Pet Grooming Table Mat

Minnya Pet Grooming Table Mat

No matter how gentle you are when bathing your puppy, they’ll likely be a bit uncomfortable. “One of the reasons that dogs, especially puppies, get so panicked in the bath is because they feel unstable,” says Arden. To prevent your dog from slipping around, create some traction with one of these rubber grooming mats. This option comes in three bright colors and has a non-slip backing to keep it secure in your shower, according to the brand.

Best grooming wipes: Wild One Dog Grooming Wipes

Wild One Dog Grooming Wipes

Wild One Dog Grooming Wipes

“I would buy wipes because they’re a good tool for freshening your puppy up, but also for getting them used to gentle cleaning and handling,” says Arden. “When your puppy is chilled out after a play session or a walk, take out a wipe and gently clean the under part of their paws and their undercarriage.” I use this option from Wild One and shower him with treats when he calmly sits through a cleaning session.

Best grooming brush: Burt’s Bees Double-Sided Hemp Brush

Burt's Bees Double-Sided Hemp Brush

Burt’s Bees Double-Sided Hemp Brush

“ Daily brushing is important to bring out the oils in the skin and coat, [create] time for you to bond with your pup, and for you to examine their entire body for scrapes, cuts or redness,” says Morgan. While your puppy is young, Arden recommends sticking to a brush with very soft bristles. However, as your dog (and their coat) grows, you’ll need a finer tool to avoid tangles and mats. This highly rated 2-in-1 option from Burt’s Bees can accomplish both of these tasks, as it has a detangling pin brush on one end and a gentle, soft-bristled brush on the other.

Best dog toothbrush: H&H Pets Finger Toothbrush

H&H Pets Finger Toothbrush

H&H Pets Finger Toothbrush

Your puppy’s dental hygiene is just as important as yours, meaning you should be brushing their teeth daily, says Morgan. If your pup seems hesitant to let you touch their teeth, Arden suggests gradually exposing them to the sensation and doling out treats anytime you see progress. “Touch their muzzle for just a second, then give them a treat. Lift up their lip, then give them a treat. Eventually, they start to get desensitized to you messing with their mouth,” says Arden. She recommends this H&H figure toothbrush for young pups, which you can use with coconut oil as toothpaste, Morgan adds. “It has antibacterial properties and most dogs love the taste.”

Cleaning supplies

One thing I heavily underestimated before bringing my puppy home is the amount of time that I would spend cleaning up. Between potty training messes and spilled food, there’s always something to wipe up, and having the right supplies on hand is key.

Best pet vacuum: Dyson Ball Animal 3 Extra Upright Vacuum

Dyson Ball Animal 3 Extra Upright Vacuum

Dyson Ball Animal 3 Extra Upright Vacuum

One of our favorite vacuums for pet hair , this Dyson option is great if you have a breed that sheds. Arden stocks each of her training locations with Dyson vacuums, and the Animal 3 specifically has special detangling features that clear pet hair from the vacuum’s brush as it cleans, according to the brand. It even comes with a grooming brush that can remove hair directly from your dog, according to Dyson.

Best for odor control: Skout’s Honor Professional Strength Stain & Odor Remover

Skout's Honor Professional Strength Stain & Odor Remover

Arden calls this stain and odor remover from Skout’s Honor “the magic stuff” and I couldn’t agree more. I’ve used it to clean up accidents all over my home, making the stain and odor disappear.

Best stain remover: DOG By Dr Lisa Wee Cleaner

DOG Wee Cleaner

DOG Wee Cleaner

Once a pet has “marked” a spot in your home, they’re more likely to go to the bathroom in that same spot again, according to our experts. A great option for odor management, especially for bathroom accidents around your home, is this Dog by Dr Lisa spray cleanser, which won an NBC Select Pet Award for best stain remover. Our staffers with pets who tried this spray specifically liked its ability to neutralize urine odor. NBC Select staff also tried the Wee Cleaner on carpet samples and noticed it not only improved the appearance of stains like acidic coffee and juice faster than other products we tried, but it also left a pleasant odor that eliminated any other smells.

Best reusable towels: The Rag Company Microfiber Cleaning Towels

After the first few days of cleaning up messes (and blowing through my paper towel budget), I knew I had to find another solution. This pack of twelve microfiber cleaning towels was a quick fix — I can clean up a mess, throw them in the laundry and then reuse them over and over again.

Frequently asked questions

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to selecting your puppy’s food — you need to take into account everything from their breed to their individual health issues. However, the guidance for how many times to feed your puppy is generally the same: All puppies will need to be fed three times a day until they are sixteen weeks old, says Morgan. After that, you can reduce it to two feedings per day.

Below are some expert tips to selecting the meals that will support your puppy’s growth during this integral stage:

  • Read the labels. “Be sure the food’s label states that it is made specifically for puppies or for all life stages,” says Morgan. “ Adult dog food will not supply the correct vitamin and mineral ratios for puppies, particularly large-breed puppies.” The ingredient at the top of the label is the one that is the highest quantity, so both our experts recommend leaning towards labels that feature natural, human-grade ingredients.
  • Research . Arden recommends utilizing several sources to help you find the best option for your puppy. Start by asking your vet for their vet’s top choices, then reach out to trusted groomers and dog trainers. “Odds are, if you chat with enough people in the industry, there’s going to be some overlap,” she says. The brand that comes up the most amongst your pup’s care team is likely their best bet.

On the first night, provide them with a comfortable space like a dog bed or crate where they can relax and avoid overstimulation, according to veterinarians at The Vets , a mobile vet service. Plus, getting your pup comfortable in their crate or bed helps prevent separation anxiety and is an excellent way to accelerate potty training, says Arden (more on house training tips below).

A new environment can be hard for your new puppy, especially the first night. You can expect whining, crying, barking or attempts to hide because they might be distressed being away from their mom or littermates for the first time, according to our experts at The Vets. However, you shouldn’t ignore them, especially those first few nights — most likely, they’re crying out of fear, stress or because they need to go to the bathroom. Be prepared for frequent potty breaks because young puppies can't hold their bladder for long, The Vets’ experts say.

When I brought my puppy home, I wanted to make sure he was as happy and comfortable as possible. However, I quickly learned that being too lenient actually harms both me and my pup — a lack of discipline can delay his understanding of household boundaries and proper social behaviors. “A lot of times, people kill with kindness,” says Arden. “Out of the goodness of their heart, they do things that inadvertently set their puppy up to fail.”

Below, we provide house training methods that not only make the puppy stage more manageable but also set the foundation for a well-behaved dog:

  • Use a crate throughout the day. Putting your dog in their crate at night can be difficult, so many puppy parents may avoid using it throughout the day. However, experts say it’s great for both providing a comfortable space for your pup and potty training; since most dogs do not want to soil where they sleep, having them take naps in their crate decreases their desire to use it as a bathroom, says Morgan. If you’re having trouble getting your puppy to use their crate, use it as a mealtime location to prompt a positive association with the space, says Arden.
  • Be stern with bedding. “It’s ok to put bedding into a crate if your puppy isn’t making mistakes,” says Arden. “If a puppy pees on the bedding, take it out immediately — don’t wash it, and put it back in when they’ve shown you they’re inclined to [go to the bathroom] on an absorbent surface.” My pup started out with a big, fluffy bed in his Fable crate, however, he would consistently use it as a bathroom. Removing that soft surface has completely eliminated that problem for me.
  • Monitor food and water intake. “Feeding set amounts at set times will allow you to predict when [your] puppy will need to have a bowel movement,” says Morgan. As a result, food and water should not be left out for your pup to enjoy at all times. I supplement this with tracking apps, like Dog Log , to understand my dog’s bathroom patterns after feeding times.
  • Use leash supervision indoors. Letting your puppy roam beyond your supervision not only risks interaction with dangerous household items, but also creates opportunities for bathroom accidents that you can’t see. Using a leash allows your puppy to explore within your vicinity and helps you guide them — whether that’s away from no-dog zones or towards the correct bathroom spot, says Arden. Having constant eyes on my puppy also lets me keep track of his pre-bathroom behaviors, making it easier for me to prevent accidents.
  • Find your puppy’s high value treats. High value treats are ones that motivate your puppy and force them to pay attention, making them essential for training, says Arden. “Most dogs tend to like things that are softer and more meaty rather than something that's crunchy, as well as things that are easy to break into tiny pieces,” she says. While several treats have “high value” on their labels, Arden suggests trying different options and seeing what most excites your pup. “Use their favorites when you’re teaching new behaviors or when you’re in environments that are more challenging,” she says.

This will require patience and keeping a watchful eye — make sure to take it slow and supervise all interactions with other pets in the house, our experts say. The best way to introduce your puppy to other pets is by keeping them on a leash and starting with short, controlled introductions, according to experts at The Vets. This is also true for people in your family: Make sure you’re introducing your puppy to new people slowly and offering them positive reinforcement (like high-value treats) and allowing them breaks if they become overwhelmed, The Vets’ experts say.

10 ways to celebrate National Pet Month

Celebrate your furry friends all May with love, care, and affection!{ }

May has arrived, and with late spring in full bloom, it's time to dedicate this beautiful month to showing appreciation, giving thanks, and showering love upon our beloved pets. May marks National Pet Month, and there are so many ways to celebrate the joys our furry companions bring to our lives.

Whether you're the owner of a devoted dachshund, a clever cat, or a rambunctious reptile, here are 10 ways to celebrate National Pet Month all month long!

  • Make your pet a special meal: The way to the heart is through the stomach, and this is especially true for pets—and their tails will certainly wag in delight at the scent of a new cuisine, be it a surprise can of tuna, a few homemade treats, or a delicious kibble upgrade.
  • Keep up with vet visits: A healthy pet is a happy pet. Don't forget to schedule regular check-ups to ensure they are up to date on vaccinations and shots.
  • Pamper your pet with a spa day: Treat your furry friend to a grooming session to keep them looking and feeling their best. With the weather warming up, it is important to keep their coats at an appropriate length to prevent sunburn and overheating.
  • Go for a walk: Take advantage of the sunnier days with longer walks in different parks and more outdoor playtime! As pets spend more time outdoors, they become better socialized and more familiar with their surroundings.
  • Spruce up their living space: Consider gifting your pet a fluffier bed, a larger cage, or even a few new aquarium decorations! A comfortable and stimulating living space not only keeps them cozy but also contributes to their mental health and overall well-being.
  • Teach them new tricks: Dogs, cats, and even some birds benefit from learning new tricks. Ongoing pet training keeps your pet well-behaved, mentally active, and, most importantly, rewards us with more bonding time! Remember to teach with positive reinforcement and celebrate accomplishments with a few tasty treats.
  • Surprise them with new toys: Keep your pets entertained and active with a wide variety of stimulation toys, such as nose work games, agility courses, and red laser pens, to keep both their brains and bodies moving.
  • Have a pet photoshoot: Photos capture life’s most precious memories, and pets may be the most photogenic of us all! Choose a theme, match your pet in your most fashionable attire, and snap a few pictures to cherish forever.
  • Volunteer: Even those without pets can celebrate National Pet Month! Volunteer at a local animal shelter, foster a pet to help socialize them for their future homes, or simply make a monetary donation to your favorite charity or organization. Your support will help prepare animals for adoption and make a positive impact on their lives.
  • Adopt a pet: Last, but certainly not least, celebrate National Pet Month by giving a deserving pet a forever home! By adopting from shelters, you are not only providing a second chance to an animal in need but also helping prevent shelter overcrowding, which in turn frees up resources for other pets.

It's National Adopt A Shelter Pet Day. The annual celebration on April 30 focuses on raising awareness for shelter animals and encouraging people to adopt if able.

There are also plenty of other ways to partake in National Adopt A Shelter Pet Day, like volunteering with or donating to a local shelter. Here's what we know:

When is National Adopt A Shelter Pet Day 2024?

National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day takes place on April 30 each year, according to National Day Calendar.

What is National Adopt A Shelter Pet Day?

National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day raises awareness for countless shelter animals in need of homes. Those able to care for a pet are encouraged to visit a local shelter and adopt.

If you can't provide a home, there are other ways to help such as volunteering and donating. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals, nearly 6.3 million animals enter shelters nationwide annually. These shelters spend $2 billion each year to care for the animals, according to Annie Wright Inkwell.

Donating money to a local shelter helps to cover medical expenses, food costs, boarding and more. Volunteering one's time or fostering an animal is also a good alternative. Volunteers increase an animal's chances of getting adopted and perform a variety of services due to a high intake of animals, according to Marquette University.

Volunteer or Donate to Kentucky Shelters

The Kentucky Humane Society, a nonprofit and the state's largest pet adoption agency, often depends on the community for support. According to an annual report from the Kentucky Humane Society, over 6,000 animals were adopted out in 2022. 525 fosters helped to save over 2,500 animals, and over 300 people volunteered over 12,000 hours with the organization.

With a strict euthanasia policy and saving 96% of animals in 2023, bills can be costly. During the fiscal year, from October 2021 to September 2022, the Kentucky Humane Society spent nearly $7.5 million on pet programming and services. The organization has an operating budget of around $9 million and allocates the rest to fundraising and administrative costs.

Other Kentucky shelters include the Lexington Humane Society , KY Hopeful Paws and Louisville Metro Animal Services.

Why Kristi Noem Is in the Doghouse

Americans like their politicians to be dog people. Gov. Noem broke the mold.

In April 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson was photographed lifting one of his beagles (he had two, named Him and Her) by the ears. The picture, published in Life magazine, caused widespread public outcry. Johnson apologized — and after leaving the White House released an EP called “ Dogs Have Always Been My Friends .” But the episode became part of his legend and legacy.

The immediate political fallout, though, was minimal. Johnson won the 1964 presidential election in a landslide. There’s no indication that manhandling his dog helped him defeat Barry Goldwater, but it doesn’t seem to have hurt.

Kristi Noem is no L.B.J. The South Dakota governor, frequently mentioned as a potential running mate for Donald J. Trump, wrote in “No Going Back,” her just-published memoir, about shooting Cricket , her family’s 14-month-old German wirehair pointer. The criticism has been ferocious , including from within Noem’s party. Trump, whose non-love for dogs is well-documented , has expressed his revulsion , as has Mitt Romney , who dealt with a canine-mistreatment scandal of his own during the 2012 campaign.

Appearing on “Face the Nation” on Sunday, Noem was unapologetic . She insisted that Cricket, whom she described in her book as an “ untrainable” chicken-killer , got what was coming. More than that, she tried to reclaim political advantage by giving the issue a partisan, culture-war spin.

What about Joe Biden? Not that he’s a puppy killer. Quite the contrary: Noem criticized the president for not euthanizing — or just plain blowing away — Commander, a German shepherd and serial biter who has attacked, according to Noem, “ 24 Secret Service people .” “How many people is enough people to be attacked and dangerously hurt before you make a decision on a dog?” she said. In her book, she implies that, were she in the executive branch, she’d take out Biden’s dog herself: “ Commander, say hello to Cricket for me .”

All of this has been portrayed as a career-detonating political blunder , a monumental failure to read the room, which in mid-2020s America is strewed with dismembered chew toys. We may not like one another all that much these days, but red or blue, MAGA or woke, we sure do love dogs.

(Maybe not all of us, but it seems unlikely that Noem is sending a signal — I guess we can’t call it a dog whistle — to anti-canine voters. When have cat people ever swung an election?)

In a Hollywood movie, harming a dog is often a sign of utter, unredeemable depravity. It’s no surprise that Almira Gulch, on her bicycle taking Toto “ to the sheriff to make sure he’s destroyed ,” turns into the Wicked Witch of the East. The most over-the-top Disney villain is surely Cruella de Vil from “101 Dalmations” — “devil” is right there in her name.

The unending slaughter of humans in the “John Wick” movies begins as the hero’s righteous payback after some bad guys kill his beagle . In Stephen King’s “The Dead Zone,” Greg Stillson appears to most of the world as a charismatic and popular politician. The reader knows otherwise, having seem him mercilessly kick a dog to death in the book’s prologue.

This black-and-white photo shows a man relaxing in a lounge chair outside holding a pet Cocker Spaniel to his face.

This is obviously not the company that any ambitious politician wants to keep. Dogs have long been the friends of presidents, Trump being a notable exception in recent times. After Richard Nixon joined Dwight Eisenhower’s ticket for the presidency in 1952, a cocker spaniel named Checkers — or at least a speech about that dog — saved him from disgrace. On his record, L.B.J. actually sings a duet with Yuki , a mixed-breed rescue who had sometimes accompanied him to White House news conferences.

Americans like their presidents to be dog people — or maybe presidents assume that’s what the people want. While Noem admits that she “hated” Cricket, she does insist on being seen as a particular kind of dog person: the unsentimental, law-and-order, decisively alpha kind, in keeping with the style of governance that “No Going Back” seeks to promote.

Johnson claimed that picking up beagles by the ears was common practice in rural Texas where he grew up. Noem uses Cricket to embroider her own version of rough-hewed, small-town, middle-American authenticity.

Sometimes, in that world, it’s necessary to shoot a dog. In books and movies, not everyone who kills a dog is a monster. What about Atticus Finch, who steps out into the street to blast a rabid cur? What about “Old Yeller,” in which the titular pooch — as fine a dog as ever graced the screen — also catches rabies, and a bullet? These deaths are somber, even tragic, sad necessities in a world defined by human fallibility and canine innocence.

The most sympathetic reading of the Cricket story — though not to Cricket, of course — is that it’s Noem’s attempt to work in this genre, to lay down a hard and homely truth while also burnishing her leadership credentials. The reaction may have more to do with the manner of the telling than with the content of the tale. The hero might have to shoot the dog. The villain brags about it.

Mother’s day gift guide 2024: the best pét-nat sparkling wines.

Pet-nats are natural sparkling wines that are increasingly popular with the cool kids of the wine ... [+] world. Fun, flavorful and often affordable, they're the perfect gift for Mother's Day.

Pét-Nats are sparkling natural wines. Their name is short for pétillant naturel and the best have refreshing fruit-forward flavors that are reminiscent of a mimosa and/or a barrel-aged beer such as a lambic. This makes them an excellent choice for a Mother’s Day gift. Because the yeast used for a secondary fermentation in pét-nats is not removed from the bottle they often have a cloudy appearance and can be less expensive to produce than Champagne, which means you can get a great pét-nat for less than a great Champagne (but you don’t have to tell mom that part). I have fallen in love with the style recently and have been doing my part to spread the pét-nat gospel far and wide.

Pet-nats are also a great introduction to wine for fans of craft beer, cider and cocktails as their carbonated fruit-forward flavors can be reminiscent of barrel-aged beers and ciders. Here are some of my favorite pét-nats that are perfect for Mother's Day gifts or just summer drinking in general.

Clos Lentiscus Rose Brut Nature

This beautiful pét-nat from Clos Lentiscus, a biodynamic vineyard in Catalonia, pours a copper color and has bright fruit flavor against a slightly musty, but pleasantly so, backend. Reminiscent of a lambic, it is bursting with fruit-forward flavor and is perfect for mom.

Vegas Altas Ancestral

Made with a co-ferment blend of organically grown (on clay soils) Macabeo, Xarello, and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, Vegas Atlas Ancestral has a fresh and fruity flavor. Bright and refreshing, it’s a very celebratory drink.

Bojo do Luar, Brut Luiza Pét-Nat Rosé

This bargain-priced $21.99 pét-nat is a red fruit-forward triumph of flavors that like, several other offerings on this list, is reminiscent of a mimosa in all the best ways. With bottle art featuring a bright circular cover, this is a wonderful bottle to gift to mom.

Apple iPhone 16 New Design And Performance Upgrades Revealed In Leak

Google s insane new pixel 8 discounts are not ending, samsung releases new feature boost to millions of galaxy phones.

A collaboration between Catalonian winery, Finca Parera, and Barcelona natural wine bar Bar Salvatge, this ancestral sparkling wine is made from Xarello and Chardonnay, grapes grown and cultivated through biodynamic farming. It’s got all the bright spring and summer flavors you want in a pét-nat.

Martin Texier, Petite Nature

Jason Black, of Ungrafted Selections, which imports this wine to the U.S. from France, recommended this to me when I asked him for a funk-forward pét-nat recommendation. He says it reminds him of a sour beer from Hill Farmstead and I agree.

XL Ancestral

Don’t let the minimalist bottle with only“XL” on it fool you, this pét-nat is bursting with dry fruit notes and more of the flavors you traditionally associate with Champagne but its natural wine attitude shines through the longer you let the bottle breath. It’s made from Xarello grapes that are hand-harvested and then it utilizes spontaneous fermentation.

Palazzo Tronconi Gizziello Pét-Nat Rose

This ruby red expression from Italy is made with grapes from a certified biodynamic farm and utilizes spontaneous fermentation. All that creates an engaging and beautiful to look at pét-nat with lots of bright citrus notes.

A big pet peeve: Soaring costs of vet care bite into owners' budgets

pet for essay

SAN FRANCISCO – When one of the family's two cats suddenly stopped eating on a Thursday last month, Dave Lambert knew there was something wrong with 12-year-old Ender, a pet so perceptive as to recognize the sound of the Lamberts’ car and regularly greet them at the front door.

Dave and his wife, Rena, canceled a weekend trip to Denver for his mother’s 80th birthday and had Ender run through a series of tests, which determined he had cancer. By Sunday, when it became clear Ender couldn’t be saved, the veterinary bills had already added up to $6,500. An in-home euthanasia cost another $500.

Lambert, a finance professional in San Francisco, said he could tell there was an 80%-90% chance the quickly mounting charges wouldn’t result in keeping the cat alive but felt they had to do everything reasonably possible for such a beloved member of the family.

“The surprising thing for both Rena and I was we just had no idea how attached we were to him, how hard it hit us,’’ he said.

As Americans of all income levels care for their cherished animals, they’re facing bigger vet bills that can substantially impact their finances and sometimes complicate already wrenching decisions.

Veterinarians are reporting a marked increase over the past several years – especially since the pandemic – in the cost of running a practice, which inevitably gets passed along to clients.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics , the price of urban veterinarian services rose by 7.9% from February 2023 to February 2024, more than 2½ times higher than the average of all consumer items. Compared with two years ago, urban vet care is up 11%, and over the last decade it has soared by nearly 60%.

A survey by USA TODAY Blueprint this year shows 91% of pet owners have endured some level of financial stress because of pet care costs. Last summer, a Forbes Advisor poll revealed 63% of dog and cat owners said inflation had made it harder to pay an unexpected vet expense, and 42% said they would go into debt if the bill was for $999 or less.

Micah and Angie Cacopardo spent $17,000 on surgeries and other treatment for their greyhound, Lenny, after it was attacked by a pit bull two years ago at a dog park in Raleigh, North Carolina, leaving their then-3-year-old pet with a large gash and severely torn skin.

The sudden expenditure put a significant dent in the budget of the young couple, who were saving to have their first child.

“In the beginning it was, ‘Start swiping this Visa, we’ll figure it out later,’’’ said Micah, 33, a construction estimator for a home-damage restoration company. “There was literally no planning for it, which is the tricky part. If you knew six months beforehand, it would be a lot easier.’’

The Cacopardos got some help after setting up a GoFundMe page that brought in more than $4,000 in donations, but they were still left with a large debt and the feeling the veterinary industry “definitely had the knowledge to do better by the client,’’ he said.

'An out-of-pocket expense for most people'

The high price of services and medications can lead to sticker shock for the estimated 95% to 97% of owners whose pets are not covered by health insurance, which is not subsidized by employers, contrary to what’s typical with people.

“It’s less like human health care than it is like other service industries,’’ said Dr. David Lee, an associate dean and professor at Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. “It’s an out-of-pocket expense for most people.’’

Lee listed several reasons for the rising costs of veterinary care, among them a shortage of vets – some driven to retirement during the stressful pandemic years, others lured by specialty practices and emergency clinics – and a chronic dearth of technicians.

Increased demand from a surge of pandemic-era pet adoptions and a subsequent tight labor market that endures have pushed up labor costs, which Lee said can make up 60% of a practice’s expenses. Other factors at play include more expensive medications and technologically advanced diagnostic tests, along with increasing corporate consolidation and the growing presence in the industry of private equity firms.

About 25% of the nation’s 30,000 veterinary clinics are owned by large chains, and that percentage triples when it comes to pricier emergency and specialty clinics, The Associated Press reported . Independent vets worry a profit-focused approach may spike prices and worsen care.

“As investors want more and more returns, the easiest thing to do is to raise fees, which puts it back on the clients,’’ Lee said. “We’re very concerned that there could be as much as 35% of pet owners who will not have affordable access to veterinary care in just the next few years.’’

Some pet owners are delaying care

Dr. Link Welborn, owner of an independent network of eight pet hospitals in and around Tampa, Florida, said consolidation has led to more competition for veterinarians and technicians, “which has contributed to wage inflation and the associated increased costs for consumers.’’

He cites other rising expenses over the past four years, such as medical equipment and supplies, but they’re all secondary to paying more for labor. That makes for some difficult decisions for his clients.

“Unfortunately, higher costs reduce affordability,’’ Welborn said, “which causes some pet owners to delay care for their pets, particularly wellness care, or need a payment plan if their pet becomes ill.’’

Putting off preventive care, which often includes vaccinations, is exactly the opposite of what industry experts recommend for pet owners seeking to cut down on their vet bills, because those visits can uncover an issue that may be more expensive to treat later.

Pet insurance is an option for some

There are several other measures that can mitigate costs, such as using the drop-off option at pet hospitals that offer it or consulting with a triage service such as FirstVet , VetTriage or the Animal Humane Society's free Pet Helpline before taking a pet to an expensive emergency clinic.

The rising costs of care have also made buying pet insurance a more appealing alternative for some. Plans cost an average of $660 a year for dogs and about $560 for cats, and they vary depending on features.

Dr. Rena Carlson, president of the American Veterinary Medical Association , said her trade group encourages pet owners to consider insurance and plan for unexpected costs.

“Preventive care is key to finding things early and dealing with problems early,’’ she said, “before they become a really expensive emergency.’’

Officials issue warning for pet owners amid historic cicada emergence

The cook county department of animal and rabies control issued an alert monday saying pet owners will need to "protect the health and welfare of their pets this spring and summer as two different groups of periodic cicadas emerge simultaneously", published 2 hours ago • updated 29 mins ago.

Officials are warning pet owners to "take special precautions" as a historic cicada emergence begins in the city and suburbs.

The Cook County Department of Animal and Rabies Control issued an alert Monday saying pet owners will need to "protect the health and welfare of their pets this spring and summer as two different groups of periodic cicadas emerge simultaneously."

"This natural phenomenon hasn’t taken place in more than 200 years, as billions of cicadas are expected to emerge in Illinois in late May or early June," the alert stated.

Among the things officials said pet owners should keep in mind were the fact that cicadas might startle some animals.

"Cicadas do not bite or sting, are not toxic to pets and are not known to carry diseases, so interactions are generally safe. However, the noise, size and movements of cicadas may be startling to some pets," officials said. "If a pet seems scared, owners should try to direct them to an area with less cicadas like a comfortable and quiet place inside the home to relax."

They noted that dogs must be leashed when outdoors and that could help prevent startled pets from "accidentally getting away."

Consumption of the insects should also be monitored, the alert stated.

Will cicadas hurt my garden? They won't eat your plants, but could cause some damage

According to Allen Lawrence, associate curator of entomology at Petty Notebaert Nature Museum, cicadas are going to be viewed as a tasty treat to many animals.

"As far as insects go, they're very large and meaty. They have a lot of nutrients there. That's a big meal just from catching one insect," Lawrence told NBC Chicago .

But while cicadas aren't toxic to pets, there are still some potential concerns.

"While cicadas aren’t toxic to pets, gastrointestinal upset can occur if a pet consumes too many cicadas or their discarded 'shells' (exoskeletons)," the agency stated. "Intestinal obstruction or perforation could occur as exoskeletons move through the gastrointestinal tract, particularly if a small pet consumes many cicadas in a short period of time.

Owners will want to watch for vomiting, darrhea, loss of appetite or excessive drooling and seek veterinary care if their animal experiences those symptoms.

"If your pet appears to be in distress, contact your veterinarian for further guidance," the alert said.
