Ottu Movie Review: A tedious mystery with one good idea in a sea of several dull ones

It's understandable when Kunchacko Boban's Kichu tells the people he works for that making someone remember their past doesn't happen instantly -- that it takes a lot of time and effort. The someone in question is Arvind Swami's character, referred to throughout the film as David. They tell Kichu that David was the right-hand man of an underworld boss named Assainar, earlier assassinated in an ambush, the impact of which caused David memory loss. Yes, bringing back his memories will take a lot of time, but when the film that these two characters belong to is being marketed as a thriller, we get disappointed when there aren't any thrills to be found, except in its final 15 minutes, which brings up a really cool twist. But by then, one is too bored to care.

Ottu is the film's title, but look carefully at the recent posters, and you'll see a confusing addition, 'Chapter Two'. The film's opening credits show the same, and it is bound to make people wonder if they missed 'Chapter One' in another movie that went by another name. Fret not, because 'Chapter One' is simply the event of which we get a few glimpses in 'Chapter Two' (a.k.a Ottu ). These are vague flashbacks that explain the events leading up to Chapter Two. But such explanations are bothered with it only towards the end of the film, where we learn that some characters may not be who they say they are. As I said, Ottu has one good idea which gets diluted by all its dull ideas. The latter includes a brief cameo by an incomprehensible Jackie Shroff, who emerges out of the water wearing only briefs, in a possible nod to Rangeela. The rest of the film, which involves a long road trip where Kichu tries to jog David's memory, are uninspiring stretches filled mostly with tepid dialogues and bromance moments, not to mention the forced musical interludes that don't do much for the narrative. Sometimes the whole thing resembles a commercial for the Mercedez Benz they are riding in.

Of course, one can see why the makers cast Kunchacko Boban and Arvind Swami, but what's the point when the script lets these charismatic actors down? There is often the nagging sense that the original vision was more ambitious than what we see on screen. There is a bit in Goa where we finally see David's reflexes come back, and if it's supposed to make one say 'Wow', it doesn't. The same goes for a scene where David and his gang rampage a rival's stronghold, and the execution is devoid of logic and grace. The choreography is straight out of a bad B-movie. In a world where we see international filmmakers make far superior gangster thrillers with far superior fight scenes and gunplay despite budgetary constraints, isn't it embarrassing when Malayalam cinema comes up with such shoddy material?

രണ്ട് എവർഗ്രീൻ റൊമന്റിക്ക് ഹീറോസ് ഒന്നിച്ചാൽ ബോക്സ്ഓഫിസിൽ എന്തു സംഭവിക്കും? അവിടെയൊരു എവർഗ്രീൻ റൊമാന്റിക്ക് സിനിമ സംഭവിക്കുമെന്നാണ് ഉത്തരമെങ്കിൽ അത്തരം ധാരണകളെയും പ്രതീക്ഷകളെയും തിയറ്ററിനു പുറത്ത് നിർത്തി ‘ഒറ്റി’നു ടിക്കറ്റ് എടുക്കുന്നതാണ് ഉചിതം. ഒറ്റ് ഫ്ലവറല്ല ഫയറാണ്, തീവണ്ടിയെന്ന റൊമന്റിക്ക് കോമഡി സിനിമയിലൂടെ അരങ്ങേറ്റം കുറിച്ച ടി.പി. ഫെല്ലിനി സിൽവർ സ്ക്രീനിൽ തീപടർത്തുന്ന കാഴ്ചക്കാണ് തിരുവോണ നാളിൽ ബോക്സ്ഓഫിസ് സാക്ഷിയായത്. രണ്ടാം ഇന്നിങ്സിൽ കൂടുതൽ പ്രവചനാതീതരായ അഭിനേതാക്കളായി മാറിയ അരവിന്ദ് സ്വാമിയും കുഞ്ചാക്കോ ബോബനും മത്സരിച്ചു അഭിനയിക്കുമ്പോൾ മലയാളത്തിലെ ലക്ഷണമൊത്ത ഗ്യാങ്സ്റ്റർ മ്യൂവിയായി ഒറ്റു മാറുന്നു. 

മലയാളത്തിനൊപ്പം ‘രണ്ടകം’ എന്ന പേരിൽ തമിഴിലും റിലീസ് ചെയ്യുന്ന ചിത്രത്തിന്റെ ഭൂമിക മുംബൈയാണ്. പേരു സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നതു പോലെ ‘ഒറ്റ്’ വിശ്വാസ വഞ്ചനയുടെയും പ്രതികാരത്തിന്റെയും കഥയാണ്. ‘ഒറ്റ്’ ചാപ്റ്റർ രണ്ടാണ് ഇപ്പോൾ റിലീസായിരിക്കുന്നത്. അതുകൊണ്ടു തന്നെ ചിത്രത്തിനൊരു ഫ്ലാഷ്ബാക്ക് സ്റ്റോറിയും ഒരു ക്ലൈമാക്സ് സ്റ്റോറിയും കൂടി പറയാനുണ്ടെന്നു തീർച്ച. 

കട്ടപ്പ എന്തിനു ബാഹുബലിയെ കൊന്നു എന്ന ചോദ്യമായിരുന്നു ‘ബാഹുബലി’യുടെ രണ്ടാം ഭാഗത്തെ ഉദ്വേഗഭരിതമാക്കിയതെങ്കിൽ ദാവൂദ് എന്തിനാകും അസൈനാറെന്ന തന്റെ ആശാനെ ചതിച്ചതെന്ന ചോദ്യം പ്രേക്ഷകരിൽ അവശേഷിപ്പിച്ചാണ് ചിത്രം തിരശീല താഴ്ത്തുന്നത്. അതിനുള്ള ഉത്തരം നൽകേണ്ട ചാപ്റ്റർ ഒന്നിലേക്കുള്ള കാത്തിരിപ്പിന്റെ ദൂരം തന്നെയാണ് ഒറ്റിനെ ആവേശഭരിതമാക്കുന്നത്. ക്ലീഷേയെന്നു തോന്നിക്കുന്ന ആദ്യ പകുതിയിൽ നിന്ന് പതുക്കെ പതുക്കെ ശക്തി പ്രാപിച്ച് ക്ലൈമാക്സിൽ വിശ്വരൂപം പുറത്തെടുക്കുന്ന സ്ലോ പോയിസണാണ് ഒറ്റ്. 

ആദ്യാവസാനം സിനിമയുടെ രസചരടു പൊട്ടാതെ സൂക്ഷിച്ചും രണ്ടും മൂന്നും ഭാഗങ്ങളിലേക്കുള്ള വ്യക്തമായ സൂചനകൾ നൽകിയും സിനിമയെ സജീവമാക്കി നിലനിർത്തുന്നതാണ് 

എസ്. സജീവിന്റെ തിരക്കഥ. ഡേവിഡിന്റെ മറവിക്കും ഭൂതകാലത്തിനും ഇടയിൽ ഒളിഞ്ഞു കിടക്കുന്ന നിഗൂഡതകളിലേക്കുള്ള അന്വേഷമാണ് സിനിമ. മുംബൈ-മംഗളൂരു റൂട്ടിലെ സ്വർണ്ണ കടത്തും ഗ്യാങ്സ്റ്റർ വാറും ചതിയുമൊക്കെയാണ് സിനിമയുടെ പ്രധാന പ്ലോട്ട്. 

വിഖ്യാത ഇറ്റാലിയൻ സംവിധായകൻ ഫെഡറിക്കോ ഫെല്ലിനിയോടുള്ള ഇഷ്ടത്തിന്റെ പേരിലാണ് അച്ഛൻ, മകനു ഫെലിനി എന്ന പേരു നൽകിയത് എന്ന് കേട്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്. അച്ഛൻ ഫെല്ലിനിയുടെ ആരാധകനായിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ മകൻ ടി.പി. ഫെല്ലിനി സ്പാഗെറ്റി വെസ്റ്റേണ്‍ ജോണർ സിനിമകളുടെ തലതൊട്ടപ്പനായ ഇറ്റാലിയൻ സംവിധായകൻ സെർജിയോ ലിയോണിന്റെ ആരാധകനാണ്. അമേരിക്കയിലെ ആഭ്യന്തര യുദ്ധ കാലത്ത് കാണാതായ സ്വർണ്ണത്തിനു വേണ്ടി മൂന്നു പേർ നടത്തുന്ന പോരാട്ടത്തിന്റെ കഥ പറയുന്ന അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ‘ദ് ഗുഡ്, ദ് ബാഡ് ആൻഡ് അഗ്ലി’ എന്ന ക്ലാസിക്കിന്റെ ടൈറ്റിൽ റഫറൻസോടെയാണ് ഒറ്റ് കഥ പറഞ്ഞു തുടങ്ങുന്നത്. പ്രധാന കഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾ മലയാളികൾ ആണെങ്കിലും സിനിമയുടെ കഥാപശ്ചാത്തലത്തിലും കഥാപാത്ര പരിചരണത്തിലും മലയാളിത്തമില്ല. 

വെസ്റ്റേൺ ഗ്യാങ്സ്റ്റാർ സിനിമകളിൽ നിന്ന് പ്രചോദനം ഉൾകൊണ്ടു നിർമ്മിക്കപ്പെട്ടിട്ടുള്ള സമകാലിക തമിഴ് സിനിമകളുടെ ഛായയാണ് ‘ഒറ്റി’നുള്ളത്. മുംബൈയാണ് കഥയുടെ പശ്ചാത്തലം. മുംബൈയിൽ നിന്ന് ഗോവ വഴി മംഗുളുരുവിലേക്കുള്ള യാത്രയിലൂടെയാണ് സിനിമ പുരോഗമിക്കുന്നത്. തുടക്കം മുതൽ ഒടുക്കം വരെ അടിയും വെടിയും തീർക്കുന്ന സ്ഥിരം മാസ് ആക്ഷൻ സിനിമകളുടെ വഴിയിൽ നിന്ന് മാറി സഞ്ചരിക്കുകയാണ് ‘ഒറ്റ്’. മാസിനും ആക്‌ഷനുമൊപ്പം വൈകാരികമായ ഒട്ടേറെ അടരുകളും ചേർന്നതാണ് ഒറ്റിന്റെ ടോട്ടൽ മേക്കിങ്. ചിലപ്പോൾ ഒറ്റ് ഒരു പ്രണയ സിനിമയാണെന്നും തോന്നും മറ്റുചിലപ്പോൾ ഇമോഷനൽ ഡ്രാമയാണെന്നും റോഡ് മ്യൂവിയുടെ ഘടകങ്ങളുമുണ്ട് സിനിമയ്ക്ക്. ക്ലൈമാക്സിൽ തികഞ്ഞ ആക്‌ഷൻ ത്രില്ലർ സിനിമയുമാകുന്നു. ഇങ്ങനെ വ്യത്യസ്തമായ ഒട്ടേറെ സിനിമാറ്റിക്ക് ജോണറുകളെ കയ്യടക്കത്തോടെ അവതരിപ്പിച്ചു സംവിധായകൻ കയ്യടി നേടുന്നു. 

അരങ്ങേറ്റത്തിലും ഇടവേളയ്ക്കു ശേഷമുള്ള രണ്ടാം വരവിലും വിസ്മയിപ്പിച്ച രണ്ട് അഭിനേതാക്കളാണ് അരവിന്ദ് സ്വാമിയും കുഞ്ചാക്കോ ബോബനും. ആദ്യ വരവിൽ എവർഗ്രീൻ റൊമന്റിക്ക് ഹീറോ പരിവേഷമുണ്ടായിരുന്നു ഇരുവരും രണ്ടാം വരവിൽ അത്തരം ഇമേജുകളുടെ തടവറയിൽ നിന്ന് സ്വയം പുറത്തു കടക്കാൻ സദാ ജാഗ്രത പുലർത്തിയിരുന്നു. രണ്ടാം വരവിൽ  റൊമന്റിക്ക് ഹീറോയിൽ നിന്ന് ലക്ഷണമൊത്ത പ്രതിനായകനായിയുള്ള അരവിന്ദ് സ്വാമിയുടെ വേഷപകർച്ച വിസ്മയകരമായിരുന്നു. ‘തനി ഒരുവനി’ലെയും ‘ബോഗനി’ലെയും അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ മാസ് വില്ലൻ വേഷങ്ങൾ ഒരേ സമയം അദ്ദേഹത്തിനു പ്രേക്ഷക-നിരൂപക പ്രശംസങ്ങൾ നേടി കൊടുത്തു. നായകനേക്കാൾ വില്ലനെ പ്രേക്ഷകർ ഇഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടു പോകുന്ന മാന്ത്രികത സ്വാമിയുടെ സ്വതസിദ്ധമായ അഭിനയ ശൈലിയിൽ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. പ്രതിനായകനായും സ്വാഭവ നടനായും അരവിന്ദ് അരങ്ങ് തകർക്കുന്ന കാഴ്ചക്കാണ് പിന്നിട് തമിഴകം സാക്ഷിയായത്. 

കുഞ്ചാക്കോ ബോബനാകട്ടെ രണ്ടാം വരവിലും ചെറുതും വലുതുമായ വേഷകളിലൂടെ കൃത്യമായ ഇടവേളകളിലൂടെയാണ് തന്റെ ആക്റ്റിങ് ഗ്രാഫ് ഉയർത്തിയത്. അഭിനയ ജീവിതത്തിൽ സുവർണ ജൂബിലി ആഘോഷിക്കുന്ന ചാക്കോച്ചൻ ഇതിനോടകം 2022 ലെ ബോക്സ് ഓഫിസിൽ തരംഗമായി മാറി കഴിഞ്ഞു. ‘ന്നാ താൻ കേസ് കൊട്’ എന്ന ചിത്രം ഒരു ക്ലാസ് ആക്ഷേപഹാസ്യ സിനിമയായിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ തനിക്ക് അപ്രാപ്യമെന്നു കരുതിയ ഒരു മാസ് ഹീറോയിലേക്കുള്ള ചാക്കോച്ചന്റെ ട്രാക്ക് മാറ്റത്തിനാണ് ‘ഒറ്റ്’സാക്ഷിയാകുന്നത്. രണ്ടാം വരവിൽ സ്വാമിയും ചാക്കോച്ചനും കൂടുതൽ പ്രവചനാതീതരായ അഭിനേതാക്കളായി മാറി കഴിഞ്ഞു. ഈ പ്രവചനാതീത സ്വാഭവം തന്നെയാണ് ഒറ്റിനെ കൂടുതൽ ഉദ്വേഗഭരിതവും രസകരവുമാക്കി തീർക്കുന്നത്. അരവിന്ദ് സ്വാമിക്കും കുഞ്ചാക്കോ ബോബനുമൊപ്പം സ്ക്രീനിലെത്തുന്ന ബോളിവുഡ് താരം ജാക്കി ഷ്റോഫ്, തെന്നിന്ത്യൻ താരങ്ങളായ ആടുകളം നരേൻ, ഈഷാ റേബാ, ജിൻസ് ഭാസ്ക്കർ, അമൽഡാ ലിസ് എന്നിവരെല്ലാം അവരവരുടെ വേഷങ്ങൾ ഭംഗിയായി ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ട്.  

നായകനും പ്രതിനായകനും റോളുകൾ മാറിമാറി അണിയുമ്പോൾ ‘ഒറ്റ്’ കൂടുതൽ സങ്കീർണമാകുന്നു. സ്ഥിരം മാസ് മസാല എന്റർടെയിനർ സിനിമയുടെ ട്രാക്കിലല്ല സിനിമയുടെ സഞ്ചാരം എന്നതുകൊണ്ടു തന്നെ ഒറ്റ കാഴ്ചയിൽ ‘ഒറ്റ്’ പ്രേക്ഷകർക്കു സ്വീകാര്യമാകണമെന്നില്ല. എന്നാൽ തീർച്ചയായും ഇനി വരാനിരിക്കുന്ന ഒട്ടേറെ സിനിമകൾക്കു പ്രചോദനമാകുന്ന സാങ്കേതിക തികവുളള മേക്കിങിൽ കയ്യടക്കമുള്ള പവർഫുളായ സിനിമ തന്നെയാണ് ഒറ്റെന്നു നിസംശയം പറയാം. ‘ഒറ്റി’നെ മികച്ച സിനിമാറ്റിക്ക് അനുഭവമാക്കി മാറ്റുന്നതിൽ ഫെലിനിക്കൊപ്പം അണിനിരന്ന സാങ്കേതിക പ്രവർത്തകർ വഹിച്ച പങ്കും വലുതാണ്. പാട്ടിലും പശ്ചാത്തല സംഗീതത്തിലും ഒരുപോലെ മികവ് പുലർത്തുന്നു അരുൾരാജ് കെന്നഡി. ഒരു മാസ് എന്റർടെയിനറിനു വേണ്ട എല്ലാ ചേരുവകളും നിറഞ്ഞതാണ് അരുളിന്റെ സംഗീതം. ക്ലൈമാക്സിൽ അത് കൂടുതൽ ശക്തി പ്രാപിക്കുന്നുമുണ്ട്. രംഗനാഥ് രവിയും (സൗണ്ട് ഡിസൈനർ) തപാസ് നായകും (സൗണ്ട് മിക്സിങ്) ഒരിക്കൽ കൂടി പിന്നണിയിൽ മികവ് ആവർത്തിക്കുന്നു. ഛായാഗ്രാഹകൻ ഗൗതം ശങ്കർ, ചിത്രസംയോജകൻ അപ്പു എൻ. ഭട്ടതിരി, കലാസംവിധായകൻ സുഭാഷ് കരുൺ തുടങ്ങി ചിത്രത്തിന്റെ അണിയറ പ്രവർത്തകരെല്ലാം ചിത്രത്തിന്റെ ടോട്ടൽ മൂഡിനെ ഉയർത്തുന്നതിൽ ചെറുതല്ലാത്ത പങ്കുവഹിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. 

ഡേവിഡിന്റെയും അസൈനാരുടെയും ഭൂതകാലം പറയുന്ന ചാപ്റ്റർ ഒന്നിനും ഡേവിഡും അസൈനാരും കണക്കുകൾ തീർക്കുന്ന ചാപ്റ്റർ മൂന്നിനുമുള്ള കാത്തിരിപ്പാണ് ഇനി. തെന്നിന്ത്യൻ സിനിമയിൽ മറ്റൊരു സമാന്തര യൂണിവേഴ്സായി ഒറ്റ് പരിണമിക്കുമെന്നു കരുതാം. കാത്തിരിക്കാം ഡേവിഡിന്റെ ഭൂതകാലത്തിനും ഭാവിക്കുമായും. ഇതുവരെ കേൾക്കാത്ത അറിയാത്ത അവരുടെ അധോലോകത്തിലെ നിഗൂഡമായ കഥകൾക്കായി….

Engaging and entertaining, ‘Ottu’ awaits a prequel and a sequel

‘Ottu’ starring Arvind Swamy and Kunchacko Boban in the lead roles has been one of the most anticipated movies of the season as it brings two evergreen romantic heroes on screen together. However, those who go to the theatres hoping to watch a romantic entertainer would be disappointed as ‘Ottu’ is an engaging thriller that could set the screens on fire. After the romantic comedy ‘Theevandi’ filmmaker TP Fellini has tried his hands in a different genre in his latest outing. The spectacular performances of veteran actors Aravind Swamy and Kunchacko Boban who have become quite ‘unpredictable’ with their unique choice of roles in their second innings make ‘Ottu’ a perfect gangster movie.

Interestingly, the movie has been simultaneously released in Tamil as ‘Randakam’. The plot of ‘Ottu’ that narrates stories of dishonesty and betrayal, unravels in Mumbai. It seems that the second chapter of ‘Ottu’ has been released now and there would be a prequel and a sequel for the thriller.

The movie ends by making the audience curious to know why David had betrayed his guru, Asainar. There are ample moments of cliché in the first half before the movie shifts gears in the second half, leading to a thrilling climax. The movie is able to entertain the audience from the beginning to the end and give hints about possible sequels too.

The screenplay of the movie is penned by S Sajeev. The film explores the mysteries that lie in David’s past. Moreover, the plot amazingly depicts the gold smuggling in the Mumbai – Mangaluru route, gang wars and the betrayals.

The director has mentioned in interviews that he was named Fellini as his father was an admirer of the legendary Italian filmmaker Federico Fellini. However, Fellini is a self confessed fan of Italian legend Sergio Leone who is considered as one of the most influential directors who popularised the Spaghetti Western genre. ‘Ottu’ begins by paying tribute to Leone’s ‘The Good, the Bad and the Ugly’ that narrates the story of a trio who looks for the gold that had gone missing during the American civil war, in the titles. Even though the characters in ‘Ottu’ are Malayalis, the plot or the way in which the characters have been treated hardly have any Malayali essence.

‘Ottu’, curiously shares the spirit of some recent Tamil movies that were inspired by the Western gangster movies. The movie that begins in Mumbai progresses through Goa and Mangaluru. However, unlike the regular mass action thriller, ‘Ottu’ isn’t crammed with high octane action sequences. Instead, the movie boasts of multiple layers that explores the emotional state of the characters. Sometimes, the audience might think that ‘Ottu’ is a love story and at other times it seems like an emotional drama. Besides, there are elements of a road movie too in it. However, in the climax, ‘Ottu’ takes the form of a fabulous action thriller.

Arvind Swamy and Kunchacko Boban are two extremely talented actors who have impressed the audience in their second innings. Interestingly, both of them had romantic hero tags throughout the first phase in their career. However, in their comeback, the actors have managed to break away from this stereotypical ‘image’. From a handsome romantic hero, Aravind Swamy has moulded himself into a ruthless villain who amazed the critics and the audience alike with his incredible performances in ‘Thani Oruvan’ and ‘Bogan’. His natural acting abilities made the audience root for the villain rather than the hero.

Meanwhile, Kunchacko Boban managed to rise his career graph by essaying lead roles and supporting roles in proper intervals. The actor, who is celebrating his twenty fifth year in cinema, has set the cash registers ring at the box office with his recent outing ‘Nna Thaan Case Kodu’. If he had portrayed a commoner in this classic satire, Kunchacko Boban had transformed himself into a mass hero in ‘Ottu’. The lead actors’ unpredictable choices of roles are what makes ‘Ottu’ exciting and thrilling. The movie also stars Bollywood actor Jackie Shroff and South Indian stars like Aadukalam Naresh, Eesha Reba, Jins Bhaskar and Amalda Liz.

When the hero and villain keep interchanging these roles ‘Ottu’ becomes an interesting watch. As the movie doesn’t adopt the formula of a regular mass masala, fans of such movies may not be impressed by the unique treatment of the film. However, the movie stands out for its spectacular technical quality and amazing performances. The music and background score by Arulraj Kennedy help the pace of the movie. Meanwhile, the sound designing by Ranganath and sound mixing by Tapas Nayak add to the technical brilliance of the film. The camera by Gouthan Sankar, Appu Bhattathiri’s editing and Subash Karun’s production design have elevated the general mood of ‘Ottu’.

Now, the wait continues for Chapter 1 that explores David and Asainar’s past and for Chapter 3 where the scores are finally settled. This movie truly has the potential to be turned into a parallel cinematic universe in the South Indian cinema industry.

'തീവണ്ടി'ക്ക് ശേഷം ടി പി ഫെലിനി ഒരുക്കുന്ന സിനിമയിൽ കുഞ്ചാക്കോ ബോബനും അരവിന്ദ് സ്വാമിയും കേന്ദ്ര കഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾ ആവുന്നു. ഇവർക്കൊപ്പം ജാക്കി ഷരോഫ്, ആടുകളം നരേൻ, ഇഷ റെബ്ബ എന്നിവരാണ് സിനിമയിലെ മറ്റു പ്രധാന വേഷങ്ങളിൽ എത്തുന്നത്. 25 വർഷങ്ങൾക്ക് ശേഷം അരവിന്ദ് സ്വാമി മലയാളത്തിൽ എത്തുന്ന സിനിമ, 'അതിശയന്' ശേഷം ജാക്കി ഷാരോഫ് മലയാളത്തിൽ അഭിനയിക്കുന്ന ചിത്രം എന്നൊക്കെയുള്ള കൗതുകങ്ങളാണ് 'ഒറ്റി'നു വലിയ പ്രാധാന്യം നേടി കൊടുത്തത്. ഒപ്പം കുഞ്ചാക്കോ ബോബന്‍റെ മേക്ക് ഓവറും ഇന്റിമേറ്റ് രംഗങ്ങളും കാണികളിൽ കൗതുകമുണ്ടാക്കി.

ചിത്രത്തിന്‍റെ ട്രെയിലർ സൂചിപ്പിക്കും പോലെ 'ഒറ്റ്' ഒരു ത്രില്ലർ റോഡ് മൂവി ആണ്. മൂന്ന് ചാപ്ടറുകൾ ഉള്ള സിനിമയുടെ രണ്ടാം ഭാഗമാണ് ഇന്ന് തീയറ്ററുകളിൽ എത്തിയത്. മുംബൈ നഗരത്തിന്‍റെ തിരക്കുകളിൽ നിന്നാണ് 'ഒറ്റ്' തുടങ്ങുന്നത്. കിച്ചു എന്ന യുവാവ് കാമുകി കല്യാണിയുമായി ചേർന്ന് സാമ്പത്തികസ്ഥിരതയുള്ള ജീവിതം സ്വപ്നം കാണുന്നു. യാദൃശ്ചികമായി അയാൾക്ക് ഒരു ദൗത്യം ഏറ്റെടുക്കേണ്ടി വരുന്നു. ഇതിനായി അയാൾക്ക് ഡേവിഡ് എന്ന വിചിത്രനായ മനുഷ്യനെ പരിചയപ്പെടേണ്ടി വരുന്നു. ഇവർ തമ്മിൽ ഉടലെടുക്കുന്ന ആത്മബന്ധവും ഒന്നിച്ചു ഇവർ നടത്തുന്ന യാത്രയും ഇതിനിടയിൽ ചുരുളഴിയുന്ന ദുരൂഹതകളും ഒക്കെ ചേർന്നാണ് 'ഒറ്റി'ന്‍റെ കഥ വികസിക്കുന്നത്.

ലോക പ്രശസ്ത ഹോളിവുഡ് ചിത്രം 'ഗുഡ്, ബാഡ് ആൻഡ് അഗ്ലി'യിലെ ഹിറ്റായ ഗൺ ഷൂട്ട് രംഗത്തിന്‍റെ റെഫറൻസിലൂടെയാണ് 'ഒറ്റ്' തുടങ്ങുന്നത്. 'ഗുഡ്, ബാഡ് ആൻഡ് അഗ്ലി' അടക്കം ഹോളിവുഡ് ആക്ഷൻ സിനിമകളുടെ പ്രത്യക്ഷവും പരോക്ഷവുമായ സ്വാധീനം സിനിമയിലുണ്ട്. 'തീവണ്ടി'യിൽ ഗ്രാമ്യമായ അന്തരീക്ഷത്തിൽ കഥ പറഞ്ഞ ഫെലിനി അതിൽ നിന്നും തീർത്തും വിഭിന്നമായി നാഗരികമായ, സ്റ്റൈലിഷ് ആയ ഒരു കഥാപരിസരം തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കുന്നു. നേരിട്ട് കഥയിലേക്ക് കടക്കുന്ന സിനിമയിൽ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളുടെ വിശദമായ പശ്ചാത്തലമോ നിർമിതിയോ ഒന്നുമില്ല.

പൊതുവെ റോഡ് മൂവികൾ മലയാളത്തിൽ അധികം പുറത്തിറങ്ങാറില്ല. യാത്രക്കിടയിൽ വികസിക്കുന്ന കഥ, അതുണ്ടാക്കുന്ന സംഘർഷങ്ങൾ ഒക്കെ ചിത്രീകരിക്കുക വെല്ലുവിളിയാണ്. ഇന്ത്യയിലെ ഏറ്റവും പ്രശസ്തമായ ഹൈവേയിലൂടെ യാത്ര ചെയ്താണ് 'ഒറ്റ്' ആ സാധ്യതയെ ഉപയോഗിച്ചത്. ആ യാത്രയിലുടനീളം കുഞ്ചാക്കോ ബോബന്‍റെയും അരവിന്ദ് സ്വാമിയുടെയുടെയും കഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾ തമ്മിൽ ഉള്ള സങ്കീര്‍ണ്ണമായ ബന്ധത്തെ ചുരുളഴിക്കാൻ ആണ് സംവിധായകൻ ശ്രമിച്ചിട്ടുള്ളത്.

'സ്റ്റൈലിഷ് സിനിമകൾ ' എന്നൊരു വിഭാഗം സിനിമ ഔദ്യോഗികമായി നിലവിലുണ്ടോ എന്നറിയില്ല. പക്ഷേ വളരെ നാഗരികമായ കാഴ്ചകളും വസ്ത്രങ്ങളും സംഘട്ടനങ്ങളും നിറഞ്ഞ സിനിമകളെ പൊതുവെ സിനിമാ പ്രേമികൾ 'സ്റ്റൈലിഷ്' സിനിമകൾ എന്ന് വിളിക്കാറുണ്ട്. ഇത്തരം സിനിമകൾക്ക് മാത്രമായി പ്രത്യേക കാണികൾ ഉണ്ട്. പൂർണമായും ആ കാണികളെ തൃപ്തിപ്പെടുത്താൻ വേണ്ടിയുള്ള ശ്രമമാണ് 'ഒറ്റ്.' കഥക്കുമപ്പുറം സിനിമയുടെ ഡീറ്റെലിംഗിൽ ശ്രദ്ധ കൊടുത്തിട്ടുണ്ട്. നായകനും വില്ലനും, അല്ലെങ്കിൽ രണ്ട് കേന്ദ്രകഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾ തമ്മിലുള്ള സംഘട്ടന രംഗങ്ങളിലൂടെയാണ് സിനിമയുടെ വികാസം. നായകൻ/വില്ലൻ എന്നീ സാമ്പ്രദായികമായ സങ്കൽപ്പങ്ങളെയും 'ഒറ്റ്' ആശ്രയിക്കുന്നില്ല.

ഒരു ത്രില്ലർ മുന്നോട്ട് നീങ്ങുന്നത് യുക്തി ഭദ്രതയെ കൂടി ആശ്രയിച്ചാണ് എന്ന് പറയാറുണ്ട്. 'ഒറ്റ്' ആ യുക്തി ഭദ്രതയെയും ആശ്രയിച്ചിട്ടില്ല. ക്ലൈമാക്സ്‌ രംഗത്തിലെ ആക്ഷൻ രംഗങ്ങൾ ഒക്കെ എല്ലാ തരം യുക്തി ബോധ്യങ്ങൾക്കും അതീതമായി നിലനിൽക്കുന്നു. ബോളിവുഡ് സിനിമകളിൽ കണ്ട് പരിചയിച്ച ആക്ഷൻ രംഗങ്ങളുടെ പ്രകട സ്വാധീനം പലയിടത്തും സിനിമയെ മുന്നോട്ട് നയിക്കുന്നതായും കാണാം.

പ്രീക്വലും സീക്വലും ഒക്കെയുള്ള സിനിമകളുടെ ആദ്യ ഭാഗം തീയറ്ററുകളിൽ എത്തുമ്പോൾ പൊതുവെ അതിനു മാത്രമായി നിലനിൽപ്പുണ്ടാവും. പക്ഷേ അത്തരമൊരു നിലനിൽപ്പിന് സാധ്യത കുറഞ്ഞ സിനിമയാണ് 'ഒറ്റ്.' ഭൂത-ഭാവികൾ കൂടി കുഴഞ്ഞു കൊണ്ടാണ് സിനിമയിലെ പ്രധാന കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളുടെ വർത്തമാന കാലത്തെ നിർണയിക്കുന്നത്. എന്നാല്‍ എങ്ങനെ അവർ ഈ വർത്തമാന കാലത്തിലേക്ക് എത്തി എന്ന് സിനിമ പറയുന്നില്ല. ആദ്യ കാഴ്ചയില്‍ തന്നെ നോൺ-ലീനിയർ ആയ കഥാ ഗതിയെ, അതിന്‍റെ ഗതിവേഗങ്ങളെ ഒക്കെ ഫോളോ ചെയ്യാന്‍ പ്രയസമുള്ളവരെ പലയിടത്തും സിനിമ പരീക്ഷിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്.

തിരക്കഥക്കും കഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾക്കും ഉപരി 'സ്റ്റൈലിഷ്' ആയ കാഴ്ചകളും നിർമിതിയും ആണ് സിനിമ എന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നവർക്ക് വേണ്ടിയാണ് 'ഒറ്റ്.' അത്തരം സിനിമാസ്വാദകരെ തൃപ്തിപ്പെടുത്താൻ ഈ ചിത്രത്തിന് സാധിച്ചേക്കും.

Ottu movie review: Arvind Swamy returns to Malayalam cinema…that’s the review

But seriously… Ottu has Arvind Swamy, Kunchacko Boban and a couple of solid twists going for it, but none of these can save the drab, over-stretched narrative.

It’s a mystery why so many human beings chase eternal youth. Arvind Swamy is a fine example of why you should not. When he was young, he was a good-looking man with a pretty face, in a world full of good-looking men with pretty faces. Since then, life has written such interesting and unique stories into that face that now, it is near impossible to look away from the 52-year-old him. I spent much of Ottu thinking of how wonderful age has been to this popular veteran actor who grabbed the national spotlight with Mani Ratnam ’s Tamil blockbusters Roja and Bombay in the 1990s. Ottu marks his return to Malayalam cinema after nearly three decades.

Ottu stars Arvind with the man of the moment from the Malayalam film industry, Kunchacko Boban . It is a suspense saga in which Kunchacko’s character Kichu is promised money by a shadowy agency in exchange for help with getting a gangster called David to recover his memory that he lost a while back. With this goal in mind, Kichu befriends the older man (Arvind) and takes him on a road trip from Mumbai, where he is based, to Mangaluru.

If the basic plot of Ottu (meaning: betrayal) is sifted from its packaging, it has promise. Two twists in the latter half are well-conceptualised and surprising. What lies between the beginning and those twists though are clichés, over-stretching and an incessant background score.

Early in Ottu , a warning sign of what is to follow comes in the form of a long song filmed on Kichu and his girlfriend Kalyani ( Eesha Rebba ) that plays the role of summarising and encapsulating their entire relationship for the audience, in the way such songs do in formulaic commercial cinema that does not want to invest time in building its female characters. To make matters worse, the tune is nothing to write home about.

Matching the drabness of this musical interruption is an excessively lengthy gun battle in the climax that is unexciting, shot unimaginatively, looks mechanical and adds not even an atom of a thrill to Ottu .

Along the way there is also an incongruous song and dance in a nightclub centred around Deepti Sati, with Kunchacko joining in. Such numbers are usually inserted into films to titillate the heterosexual male audience with a dash of female glamour in men-centric cinema and to offer some raunchy relief from a sombre storyline. In the case of Ottu , the scene also appears to have been set up to give Kunchacko the opportunity to remind the audience that he can dance. To be fair, Deepti is not shot crudely here as women tend to be in such interludes. The music is plain though, the choreography lacks novelty and little effort has been made to fit the scene smoothly into the narrative without disrupting its tone. It just pops up. And it is forgettable.

The Mumbai-Mangaluru drive in Ottu passes through some of India’s most scenic countryside, and cinematographer Gautham Sankar delivers visuals to die for on that journey. His best work in the film though is reserved for the shooting of Arvind Swamy’s face and physique, without resorting to the stock frames that are favoured for male stars by a certain type of commercial Malayalam cinema.

The actor brings more to Ottu than his screen presence and the audience’s nostalgia for him. He gives his character a world weariness that is visible in every word and look, even when he gradually transforms into a different human being as the story progresses.

There are not many supporting parts in Ottu , and the ones there are are thinly written. None of the others are as embarrassingly bad though as the poorly conceived cameo by Bollywood actor Jackie Shroff. The only characters that writer S. Sanjeev and director Fellini T.P. have paid attention to are the ones played by the two leading men.

Kunchacko has had a great year so far at the box-office, with critics and on the festival circuit. Ottu comes to theatres right after Nna, Thaan Case Kodu ’s four-week run in theatres across India. Since he has been challenging himself with a crop of excellent and varied films in recent years, it can only be assumed that Ottu was better on paper than it is on screen. I enjoyed the way he alters his body language to appear much  younger than his approximately 46 years and much junior to Arvind Swamy with whom he has nice on-screen chemistry. Beyond that, the script gives him little to bite into.

Fellini’s first film, Theevandi starring Tovino Thomas and Samyuktha Menon , had an unusual concept but fizzled out in its second half. Ottu has a premise with potential but starts sputtering early on in the absence of a worthwhile script. It picks up in fits and starts, but the engine dies on it long before the final scene.

The film’s full name is Ottu: Chapter 2 . If that is meant to indicate that there will be a Chapter 1 and maybe even 3, heaven help us.

Rating: 1.5 (out of 5 stars)

Ottu review: This Arvind Swamy-Kunchacko Boban film leaves a lot to be desired

The first time Kichu meets him, David is behind a food counter of a movie theatre, selling popcorn. Simply by being Malayalis meeting in Mumbai, they become quick friends, Kichu calling the older man ‘Anna’ – a term for big brother. It is apparently a scheme, in which Kichu is expected to make David talk and reveal things from his past. David is a man who has lost his memory and Kichu has to help revive it. All of it sounds like an interesting premise to set a film in. Especially, when David is built up as a dangerous man now assuming the role of a quiet simpleton. With a two-line intro like that, you’d imagine the film could take off smoothly, without hiccup. Only, the idea just remained great on paper, in execution, Ottu , the film, leaves much to be desired. It came from a script written by S Sanjeev and is directed by Fellini TP.

It is pleasant to see Arvind Swamy back in Malayalam after a long gap – 26 years after Devaragam . Kunchacko Boban with a half ponytail and hip clothes, looks like a much younger cousin, when in fact the two actors are only six years apart. Arvind as the naïve popcorn man is in kurtas, sporting grey hair and beard and producing a warm laugh every time Kichu jokes. He is an easily likeable character. Unfortunately, the making of the film doesn’t let you forget it is a movie, filled with artificial dialogues and jarring background music. It is in short, a very wannabe gangster film, falling really short of the mark.

To give its due, the script doesn’t neglect the women characters the way gangster movies do. But they hardly stand out with the kind of half-baked writing used to develop them. Here is Amalda Liz in a posh room, wearing suits and interviewing Kichu for a job. Clearly, she is intended to play the cold woman boss, ruthless and uncaring. On the other side is Eesha Rebba playing Kalyani, Kichu’s lover, giving him strength. Both the characters appear so staged, it becomes fitting to an altogether pretentious drama the movie ends up as. Only Kunchacko Boban, with his own voice and all the subdued expressions, makes a sincere effort to bring some credibility to the script. Arvind, looking dashing and playing the part, is disadvantaged by having Vineeth dub for his character. Vineeth does a lovely job, it’s just that Arvind's voice is too familiar and someone else’s simply sounds out of place.

Fellini tries, clearly, for originality. There is a sequence of gunshots in the last half of the film, with one gang moving into the quarters of another, uncommon in Malayalam cinema. There is also the unforeseen twist, which would give a smart ending to the unusual plot. Where the film fails is in translating that vision, that idea into the visual form. Not every attempt falls flat. There is a scene where Kichu is out on the road, relieving himself, when it suddenly starts to rain and Arvind’s character, who has been at odds with him, appears with an umbrella behind him. There, the music is right, the emotions relatable. But those moments are far and few in between. And Ottu – meaning betrayal – gives you the feeling that more than a particular character in the film, it is you, the audience, who were taken for a ride.

Ottu Malayalam Movie Review: ‘ഒറ്റ്’ റിവ്യൂ

റിലീസ് സംബന്ധിച്ച ഒരുപാട് അനിശ്ചിതത്വങ്ങൾക്ക് ശേഷമാണ് ഓണ ദിവസം ‘ഒറ്റ്’ തീയറ്ററുകളിൽ എത്തുന്നത്. ‘തീവണ്ടി’ക്ക് ശേഷം ടി പി ഫെലിനി ഒരുക്കുന്ന സിനിമയിൽ കുഞ്ചാക്കോ ബോബനും അരവിന്ദ് സ്വാമിയും കേന്ദ്ര കഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾ ആവുന്നു. ഇവർക്കൊപ്പം ജാക്കി ഷരോഫ്, ആടുകളം നരേൻ, ഇഷ റെബ്ബ എന്നിവരാണ് സിനിമയിലെ മറ്റു പ്രധാന വേഷങ്ങളിൽ എത്തുന്നത്. 25 വർഷങ്ങൾക്ക് ശേഷം അരവിന്ദ് സ്വാമി മലയാളത്തിൽ എത്തുന്ന സിനിമ, ‘അതിശയന്’ ശേഷം ജാക്കി ഷാരോഫ് മലയാളത്തിൽ അഭിനയിക്കുന്ന ചിത്രം എന്നൊക്കെയുള്ള കൗതുകങ്ങളാണ് ‘ഒറ്റി’നു വലിയ പ്രാധാന്യം നേടി കൊടുത്തത്. ഒപ്പം കുഞ്ചാക്കോ ബോബന്‍റെ മേക്ക് ഓവറും ഇന്റിമേറ്റ് രംഗങ്ങളും കാണികളിൽ കൗതുകമുണ്ടാക്കി.

ചിത്രത്തിന്‍റെ ട്രെയിലർ സൂചിപ്പിക്കും പോലെ ‘ഒറ്റ്’ ഒരു ത്രില്ലർ റോഡ് മൂവി ആണ്. മൂന്ന് ചാപ്ടറുകൾ ഉള്ള സിനിമയുടെ രണ്ടാം ഭാഗമാണ് ഇന്ന് തീയറ്ററുകളിൽ എത്തിയത്. മുംബൈ നഗരത്തിന്‍റെ തിരക്കുകളിൽ നിന്നാണ് ‘ഒറ്റ്’ തുടങ്ങുന്നത്. കിച്ചു എന്ന യുവാവ് കാമുകി കല്യാണിയുമായി ചേർന്ന് സാമ്പത്തികസ്ഥിരതയുള്ള ജീവിതം സ്വപ്നം കാണുന്നു. യാദൃശ്ചികമായി അയാൾക്ക് ഒരു ദൗത്യം ഏറ്റെടുക്കേണ്ടി വരുന്നു. ഇതിനായി അയാൾക്ക് ഡേവിഡ് എന്ന വിചിത്രനായ മനുഷ്യനെ പരിചയപ്പെടേണ്ടി വരുന്നു. ഇവർ തമ്മിൽ ഉടലെടുക്കുന്ന ആത്മബന്ധവും ഒന്നിച്ചു ഇവർ നടത്തുന്ന യാത്രയും ഇതിനിടയിൽ ചുരുളഴിയുന്ന ദുരൂഹതകളും ഒക്കെ ചേർന്നാണ് ‘ഒറ്റി’ന്‍റെ കഥ വികസിക്കുന്നത്.

ലോക പ്രശസ്ത ഹോളിവുഡ് ചിത്രം ‘ഗുഡ്, ബാഡ് ആൻഡ് അഗ്ലി’യിലെ ഹിറ്റായ ഗൺ ഷൂട്ട് രംഗത്തിന്‍റെ റെഫറൻസിലൂടെയാണ് ‘ഒറ്റ്’ തുടങ്ങുന്നത്. ‘ഗുഡ്, ബാഡ് ആൻഡ് അഗ്ലി’ അടക്കം ഹോളിവുഡ് ആക്ഷൻ സിനിമകളുടെ പ്രത്യക്ഷവും പരോക്ഷവുമായ സ്വാധീനം സിനിമയിലുണ്ട്. ‘തീവണ്ടി’യിൽ ഗ്രാമ്യമായ അന്തരീക്ഷത്തിൽ കഥ പറഞ്ഞ ഫെലിനി അതിൽ നിന്നും തീർത്തും വിഭിന്നമായി നാഗരികമായ, സ്റ്റൈലിഷ് ആയ ഒരു കഥാപരിസരം തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കുന്നു. നേരിട്ട് കഥയിലേക്ക് കടക്കുന്ന സിനിമയിൽ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളുടെ വിശദമായ പശ്ചാത്തലമോ നിർമിതിയോ ഒന്നുമില്ല. പൊതുവെ റോഡ് മൂവികൾ മലയാളത്തിൽ അധികം പുറത്തിറങ്ങാറില്ല. യാത്രക്കിടയിൽ വികസിക്കുന്ന കഥ, അതുണ്ടാക്കുന്ന സംഘർഷങ്ങൾ ഒക്കെ ചിത്രീകരിക്കുക വെല്ലുവിളിയാണ്. ഇന്ത്യയിലെ ഏറ്റവും പ്രശസ്തമായ ഹൈവേയിലൂടെ യാത്ര ചെയ്താണ് ‘ഒറ്റ്’ ആ സാധ്യതയെ ഉപയോഗിച്ചത്. ആ യാത്രയിലുടനീളം കുഞ്ചാക്കോ ബോബന്‍റെയും അരവിന്ദ് സ്വാമിയുടെയുടെയും കഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾ തമ്മിൽ ഉള്ള സങ്കീര്‍ണ്ണമായ ബന്ധത്തെ ചുരുളഴിക്കാൻ ആണ് സംവിധായകൻ ശ്രമിച്ചിട്ടുള്ളത്. ‘സ്റ്റൈലിഷ് സിനിമകൾ ‘ എന്നൊരു വിഭാഗം സിനിമ ഔദ്യോഗികമായി നിലവിലുണ്ടോ എന്നറിയില്ല. പക്ഷേ വളരെ നാഗരികമായ കാഴ്ചകളും വസ്ത്രങ്ങളും സംഘട്ടനങ്ങളും നിറഞ്ഞ സിനിമകളെ പൊതുവെ സിനിമാ പ്രേമികൾ ‘സ്റ്റൈലിഷ്’ സിനിമകൾ എന്ന് വിളിക്കാറുണ്ട്. ഇത്തരം സിനിമകൾക്ക് മാത്രമായി പ്രത്യേക കാണികൾ ഉണ്ട്. പൂർണമായും ആ കാണികളെ തൃപ്തിപ്പെടുത്താൻ വേണ്ടിയുള്ള ശ്രമമാണ് ‘ഒറ്റ്.’ കഥക്കുമപ്പുറം സിനിമയുടെ ഡീറ്റെലിംഗിൽ ശ്രദ്ധ കൊടുത്തിട്ടുണ്ട്. നായകനും വില്ലനും, അല്ലെങ്കിൽ രണ്ട് കേന്ദ്രകഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾ തമ്മിലുള്ള സംഘട്ടന രംഗങ്ങളിലൂടെയാണ് സിനിമയുടെ വികാസം. നായകൻ/വില്ലൻ എന്നീ സാമ്പ്രദായികമായ സങ്കൽപ്പങ്ങളെയും ‘ഒറ്റ്’ ആശ്രയിക്കുന്നില്ല. ഒരു ത്രില്ലർ മുന്നോട്ട് നീങ്ങുന്നത് യുക്തി ഭദ്രതയെ കൂടി ആശ്രയിച്ചാണ് എന്ന് പറയാറുണ്ട്. ‘ഒറ്റ്’ ആ യുക്തി ഭദ്രതയെയും ആശ്രയിച്ചിട്ടില്ല. ക്ലൈമാക്സ്‌ രംഗത്തിലെ ആക്ഷൻ രംഗങ്ങൾ ഒക്കെ എല്ലാ തരം യുക്തി ബോധ്യങ്ങൾക്കും അതീതമായി നിലനിൽക്കുന്നു. ബോളിവുഡ് സിനിമകളിൽ കണ്ട് പരിചയിച്ച ആക്ഷൻ രംഗങ്ങളുടെ പ്രകട സ്വാധീനം പലയിടത്തും സിനിമയെ മുന്നോട്ട് നയിക്കുന്നതായും കാണാം. പ്രീക്വലും സീക്വലും ഒക്കെയുള്ള സിനിമകളുടെ ആദ്യ ഭാഗം തീയറ്ററുകളിൽ എത്തുമ്പോൾ പൊതുവെ അതിനു മാത്രമായി നിലനിൽപ്പുണ്ടാവും. പക്ഷേ അത്തരമൊരു നിലനിൽപ്പിന് സാധ്യത കുറഞ്ഞ സിനിമയാണ് ‘ഒറ്റ്.’ ഭൂത-ഭാവികൾ കൂടി കുഴഞ്ഞു കൊണ്ടാണ് സിനിമയിലെ പ്രധാന കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളുടെ വർത്തമാന കാലത്തെ നിർണയിക്കുന്നത്. എന്നാല്‍ എങ്ങനെ അവർ ഈ വർത്തമാന കാലത്തിലേക്ക് എത്തി എന്ന് സിനിമ പറയുന്നില്ല. ആദ്യ കാഴ്ചയില്‍ തന്നെ നോൺ-ലീനിയർ ആയ കഥാ ഗതിയെ, അതിന്‍റെ ഗതിവേഗങ്ങളെ ഒക്കെ ഫോളോ ചെയ്യാന്‍ പ്രയസമുള്ളവരെ പലയിടത്തും സിനിമ പരീക്ഷിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. തിരക്കഥക്കും കഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾക്കും ഉപരി ‘സ്റ്റൈലിഷ്’ ആയ കാഴ്ചകളും നിർമിതിയും ആണ് സിനിമ എന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നവർക്ക് വേണ്ടിയാണ് ‘ഒറ്റ്.’ അത്തരം സിനിമാസ്വാദകരെ തൃപ്തിപ്പെടുത്താൻ ഈ ചിത്രത്തിന് സാധിച്ചേക്കും.

The planning for a three-part series could be also the reason why so much is left unsaid in the movie. In the end, it looks like a jigsaw puzzle with quite a few missing pieces, making one wonder whether it has enough in it for a stand-alone movie.

Kichu (Kunchacko Boban), a jobless youth, is making plans to fly out of the country with his girlfriend Kalyani (Eesha Rebba) who has secured a job in Norway. To fund this plan, he takes up a mission from a mysterious group to befriend David, alias Dawood, (Arvind Swami), a dreaded underworld don who has lost his memory completely after a shootout. Kichu is required to help him regain his memory, which could aid the group in finding the location of some missing gold.

Director Fellini T.P., who debuted with Theevandi , aims for a bigger canvas in Ottu , scripted by Hemanth Kumar. However, the ambition, reflected in the star cast and the expansive setting along the south-western coast stretching from Mumbai to Mangaluru, does not translate well on the screen, partly due to a lifeless script.

The film invests a lot on the road trip that Kichu takes with David as a means to rekindle his memories in places closely entwined with his past. Except for a few interesting sequences, much of this trip is marked by sheer boredom, with the plot advancing at a glacial pace. The only thing that works to an extent is the chemistry between the two actors and their evolving relationship during the trip.

‘Ottu’ movie review: Grounded by a rather lifeless script

Halfway through Ottu , one wonders whether it is a thriller, a road movie or a regular gangster flick. For, there are elements here that could make it belong to any of these genres.

By the end of it all, the questions still remain because the makers themselves do not seem to have made up their mind on what they wanted out of the film. The end credits then point towards the prospect of a prequel and a sequel, after which the 'Chapter 2' in the title starts making some sense.

The plan all along seems to have been to take the bored audience by surprise, with a flurry of twists and high-flying action in the last few minutes. Despite a genuinely surprising turn, this plan does not work well. Added to the fact that the makers kept everything for too late are the pointless action sequences which are staged rather unimaginatively.

A cameo from Jackie Shroff makes us wonder whether he was there just for including another popular name from the yesteryears in the cast, since not much effort has been made in writing that character.

The way Ottu proceeds does not make one excited enough for the promised prequel and the sequel.

Ottu is a Malayalam thriller film directed by T.P. Fellini. as well as directed by S Sanjeev. Arya and Shaji Nadesan produced the movie under August Cinema and Cineholix. It stars Arvind Swami, Kunchako Boban, Jackie Shroff, Eesha Rebba, Adukalam Naren, Amalda Liz, Jins Baskar, Siyad Yadu, Aneesh Gopal, Laban Ranae, Sreekumar Menon. The film’s premiere was on September 8, 2022.

It is understandable that Kichu, portrayed by Kunchacko Boban , would explain to his coworkers that restoring a person’s memory is time-consuming and labor-intensive. Throughout the film, Arvind Swami’s character is known by the name David. They inform Kichu that David was the right-hand man of an assassinated underworld boss named Assainar, whose death led to David’s memory loss. Yes, bringing back his memories will take a considerable amount of time. Still, when the film these two characters are in is marketed as a thriller, we’re disappointed that we don’t find any thrills until the final 15 minutes when an extraordinary twist is revealed. At that point, however, one is too bored to care.

People will likely wonder if they missed ‘Chapter One’ in a different film with another title, as the exact text appears in its opening credits. Don’t be concerned, as “Chapter One” is merely the event of which “Chapter Two” provides glimpses. (a.k.a Ottu). These are hazy flashbacks explaining the events that occurred before Chapter 2. After the film, it becomes apparent that some characters may not be who they say they are.

As stated, Ottu’s one good idea is diminished by its other dull ideas. In a possible nod to Rangeela, Jackie Shroff emerges from the water wearing only his underwear for a brief appearance in the latter film. The remainder of the film, which involves a long road trip during which Kichu tries to jog David’s memory, consists primarily of uninspiring dialogues and bromance moments, not to mention plotless musical interludes. Occasionally, the entire situation is reminiscent of a Mercedes-Benz advertisement.

It is clear why Kunchacko Boban and Arvind Swami were cast, but what is the point if the script fails these charismatic actors? There is frequently a nagging sense that the original vision was grander than we see on screen. There is a moment in Goa when David’s reflexes finally return, but if it’s meant to make the audience exclaim “Wow,” it fails. The same applies to a scene where David and his gang attack a rival’s stronghold; the execution lacks logic and sophistication. The choreography was taken straight from a B-movie. Is it not embarrassing that Malayalam cinema produces such inferior content in a world where international filmmakers create far superior gangster thrillers with far superior fight scenes and gunplay despite budget constraints?

In conclusion, Ottu is an entertaining movie engaging plot, the characters are vibrant, and the music is enjoyable. It’s a perfect movie to watch with friends and family, as it touches on many important topics. The film’s overall message is one of hope and resilience in times of difficulty. We can all learn a lot from the characters in this film and should strive to live life with courage, strength, and optimism.

Fails to hit the bull’s eye!

Fellini TP’s Ottu begins with an ad board of a theatre screening The Good, The Bad and The Ugly . The year is 2020. I must say, that’s quite an impressive opening.

And then the plot begins. In line with the interests of his girlfriend Kalyani (Eesha Rebba), Kichu (Kunchacko Boban) wants to immigrate to Sweden. He doesn’t know where he can get the enormous sum of money needed for it.

He accepts a mysterious mission that comes his way with the promise of a huge sum of money. Kichu’s mission is to find out something from David (Aravind Swami), who is suffering from amnesia after a gang war.

Actors are wasted

The best part of the film is the two lead actors. The Kunchacko Boban-Aravind Swami combination holds the audience to the plot. They are extremely entertaining here.

Arvind Swami’s screen presence is the highlight. Instead of making him talk Malayalam with so much strain, the director could have asked him to talk in his original accent.

David’s character shift to gangster mode should have been the backbone of the first half, but the transformation scenes lacked punch. The background music makes it even worse. It missed a great transformation mass scene.

Kunchacko, in a never-seen-before character, is fine, but not reasonably and logically convincing. And then there are Adukalam Narein, Jackie Shroff, and Eesha Rebba. With a huge cast like that, you’d think the movie would be fantastic. However, the actors are wasted.

Dull narrative & zero entertainment

The plot doesn’t really hold up very well, and even within its world, it requires a lot of belief to be suspended. The plot hole is as large as the black hole.

It has a bloated and dull narrative that does little to transform its original material into something deserving of a big-screen adaptation.

Written by S Sanjeev, Ottu is a different film from Fellini TP’s Theevandi , the director’s previous outing.

More twists come in the second half. Sadly, all the twists and thrills come without any punch. They might have worked on paper, but the execution falls flat. This could have been much better. It is different from the routine but certainly not convincing.

Songs play an important role in dragging the first half, with little use. The second half has the distinct misfortune of being completely boring.

Ottu is an easily forgettable film

Ottu is intended to be a part of a series. The idea was good, but it still lacks any of the tension that makes a movie thriller.

The entertainment factor of the movie is diminished by numerous scenes which don’t make much sense. Heavy on the lags, a terrible generic soundtrack makes it substandard.

The choreography and delivery of the stunts are on par with a crummy small-budget movie. It is so ridiculously unintentional comedy.

It has Kunchacko Boban and Arvind Swami, but is still a forgettable film. If not for the lead actors, the movie could have easily passed for B-grade.

This is a genre in which the Malayalam industry always misses hitting the bull’s eye, without Mammootty or Mohanlal. As a modern-day urban over-the-top action thriller, Ottu is also a miss.

The Malayalam film industry has been captivating audiences with a string of blockbuster releases and has many more lined up for 2024. The advent of digital platforms has further enhanced the viewing experience, allowing audiences to enjoy these releases from the comfort of their humble abodes. Following the success of recent OTT releases, several upcoming Malayalam OTT movies promise to enthrall the audience with their gripping narratives and unique content.

Varshangalkku Shesham

Varshangalkku Shesham is a recent addition to the Malayalam comedy genre, set against the backdrop of the South Indian film industry. Penned and directed by Vineeth Sreenivasan, the film has been produced under the banner of Merryland Cinemas. It stars Pranav Mohanlal, Dhyan Sreenivasan, Nivin Pauly, Kalyani Priyadarshan, and Vineeth Sreenivasan himself.

Released on April 11, 2024, the movie has received praise from the audience for its engaging performances and nostalgic elements. Varshangalkku Shesham’s first half draws inspiration from the director’s formative years. Meanwhile, the second half transitions to contemporary Malayalam cinema, blending memories with present-day elements. The story follows the journey of a writer-director and a music composer as they pursue their respective dreams.

After its successful run in theaters, the film is now set for its digital premiere . Fans can enjoy Varshangalkku Shesham on SonyLIV starting June 7, 2024. Additionally, it will be available in Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, and Kannada languages.

Guruvayoor Ambalanadayil

Guruvayoor Ambalanadayil is a comedy-drama film featuring Prithviraj Sukumaran and Basil Joseph in the lead roles. Directed by Vipin Das and written by Deepu Pradeep, the movie hit theaters on May 16, 2024. Alongside Sukumaran and Joseph, the cast includes Yogi Babu, Jagadish, Irshad, Baiju Santhosh, Rekha, Siju Sunny, and others.

Set against the backdrop of a traditional Indian wedding, Guruvayoor Ambalanadayil promises to deliver a blend of comedy and nostalgic elements. The storyline revolves around brothers-in-law who share a strong bond of friendship. However, the plot takes a hilarious twist when the characters marry the wrong woman at the temple. Interestingly, some reports suggest that the movie draws inspiration from a true incident that occurred at the Guruvayoor Temple, while others compare it to the 1992 film Grihaprevesam.

Fans eagerly anticipate the digital streaming, though the makers have not yet unveiled details about its digital availability. Typically, movies become available for streaming approximately 45–60 days after their theatrical release. Thus, the movie will land soon on the OTT platform.

Nadikar is a contemporary Malayalam comedy drama directed by Lal Jr. and written by Suvin S. Somasekharan. The film is a collaborative effort between Godspeed Cinema and Mythri Movie Makers. It premiered in theaters on May 3, 2024, and received mixed responses from both critics and audiences. Nadikar’s cast includes Tovino Thomas, Divya Pillai, Soubin Shahir, Balu Varghese, Suresh Krishna, and Bhavana.

The film explores the life of a superstar and the challenges he encounters on and off the silver screen. Despite its mixed reception, reports indicate that Nadikar is slated for streaming on Amazon Prime Video. However, the platform has yet to unveil the precise streaming date, leaving eager viewers anticipating the upcoming Malayalam movie.

Malayalee from India

Malayalee from India offers a satirical take on politics and debuted in theaters on May 1, 2024. Helmed by Dijo Jose Antony, the film cast includes Nivin Pauly, Dhyan Sreenivasan, and Anaswara Rajan in pivotal roles. Furthermore, the supporting cast includes Deepak Jethi, Shine Tom Chacko, Salim Kumar, Manju Pillai, and others. Additionally, this collaboration marks the third venture between director Dijo and writer Sharis Mohammed after Queen and Jana Gana Mana.

Set in the village of Mullakara in Thrissur, Kerala, Malayalee from India unfolds the tale of Aalparambil Gopi and his friend, Malghosh. Their lives take an unexpected turn when their actions spark a violent clash between communities within the village. As anticipation builds for its digital release, reports indicate that Malayalee from India is slated to stream on Disney Plus Hotstar. While the exact streaming date remains undisclosed, fans can expect the film to be available for streaming soon.
