My little sister and I study in grades 8 and 4, respectively, my father is a deputy manager in his reputed company, and my mother is a working lady and also a housewife. We started our journey on the 1st of December, 2019. On the way, we played a variety of games. The view over the hills was quite pleasant to watch. When we were on the top of the summits, we looked down at our town, which seemed like a toy town; how small that was from the top! 

We clicked pretty snaps of the places, clicked pictures of us, of the local residents there, after which we went to a famous restaurant to eat our afternoon meal. We had the most delightful dumplings and noodles, which were cooked and served to us when still on steam. 

As dusk dawned on us, the jungles over the hills seemed to tell us another story of spirits and supernaturals. My sister and I were quite fantasized about this view. We preferred to keep our eyes shut till we reached our destination. It was half-past 8 when we reached the hotel where we would spend the night. The hotel staff was kind people who welcomed us with great warmth. We freshened up and went downstairs to watch their cultural program. The tribes danced to the music of one of their traditional songs, which was quite amazing for us to watch. After this, dinner was served. The dinner was quite rich and they served us in a sophisticated manner. After the tiring day, we decided to call it off and went to sleep.

The next day, we went hiking in the mountains. When we reached the peak of the mountains, it was a very delightful view. We decided to camp for the rest of the day there in the hills. The scenario and being on the lap of nature were quite peaceful and serene.   

After the trip, we came down to our town and normalized our lives. 

This trip had ushered a sense of great peace and calmness in my mind, which was to be instilled. The memories of the trip were to remain fresh in my mind like the fresh droplets on the leaves.

Descriptive Essay: Christmas Traditions in My Family

Despite how the modern message may have been diluted down the years, each Christmas we celebrate the birth of Jesus with traditions drawn from Christianity as well as other ones personal to our own family. Each family I know follows many of the same traditions as we do, however each put their own spin on it and make it their own. My Christmas is special because of these very traditions which we have formed as a family.

The 1st of December is my favorite day in the year because it marks the beginning of my Christmas. On the 1st of December my family and I go to the shops and buy a special new tree decoration. My parents have been collecting Christmas decorations for years and nothing matches on purpose. Christmas spirit is everywhere on the 1st of December, the shops play festive music and are usually decorated down to the last detail. It is this date for me that marks the beginning of the season.

We all put the tree up together the weekend after. We play Christmas music in the background, wear the Santa hats we dug out of the loft and have a drink. After the tree is up, the excessive amount of food has been brought, then the family all come down for the big day. We live all over now so the traditions have had to be adapted slightly. Christmas is the time when we all make the effort to come down at the same time. We go on the 24th of December and play family games all day. We have a buffet dinner which we call an ‘itsy bitsy’ then make our way to midnight mass at the local church.

On Christmas day we wake up early, around 8 a.m. and have breakfast together. We don’t open our presents as soon as we get up as we all agree that we love the anticipation. When we do get round to opening our gifts, after dinner has been put on and the vegetables have been peeled, one of us hands each present out, one at a time.

After presents we all help to get the dinner dished up and the table laid. For dinner we have a turkey with all of the trimmings, we say grace before dinner and then pull our crackers. We have a competition to see who can keep their hat on for the whole day.

After dinner comes the washing up, which we all help with. Then we enjoy family games which we either got that day or we dig out the old classics. The games are my favorite part of the day. It is something which everyone gets involved in and has a great laugh over.

Our family traditions at Christmas have been adapted since people have moved away however, we always make the effort to be together and play games together. Our traditions are much the same as any family; we eat, we give gifts and be merry.

It feels warm and cozy to be surrounded by the people I love. We also have a big meal together, with lots of delicious food like roasted turkey, mashed potatoes, and pies. Eating with everyone around the table is one of the best parts of the holiday.

Gift-Giving and Receiving

Another reason I love Christmas is the tradition of giving and receiving gifts. I enjoy thinking about what my family and friends might like and then finding the perfect presents for them. Wrapping the gifts in bright paper and ribbons is fun, too. On Christmas morning, we all sit around the tree and open our presents. Seeing the happy faces when someone opens a gift I gave them is a wonderful feeling.

Christmas is not just about the presents and decorations; it’s also about kindness and helping others. Many people do nice things for those who are less fortunate during this time.             My lovely family consists of only three members: my mom, my sister and me. It was bigger when my Dad was alive. He died from a heart attack when I was nearly five. Not realizing how tragic and irrevocable the event of his death was for my Mom and my elder sister, I could not utter even a tear. I was not being merciless or cruel toward my father, for I loved him very much and tried to spend as much time with him as I could. .              After his busy working day at a plant he arrived home tense, a little nervous and upset, kissing my Mom on the cheek, hugging my sister and me. He rumpled my neatly combed, sparse hair making me angry because I liked to be tidy, and then disappeared behind the door of his study room, not saying a word. We all knew that we should not disturb or bother him at that moment and returned to our school tedious homework giving our fierce-looking father some time to come to his senses. My father was a leading engineer in one of the biggest airplane plants in Moscow. It was an extremely responsible and important job of which he was proud. .              After spending some time with his drawings, estimates and calculations and making some calls to his colleagues, everything became quiet behind that giant oak door. Then, all of a sudden, his tall, broad-shouldered figure in slippers and home clothes rose up on the threshold as we hid behind the door and waited for him to come out. We could see that his mood had changed dramatically fore the better. He interrupted our depressing surroundings with a piercing exclamation: "Where are my adorable little girls?" Although my sister was seven years older than I was, she was still a little girl for him. When we heard these words, it meant that all serious airplane problems were solved or postponed till tomorrow and the ringleader of our family was ready to play tricks on my sister and me. The features of his handsome face softened, his expressive almond-shaped green eyes sparkled, and a secretive cunning smile appeared on his pursed thin lips.

This Memorial Day, Ask Me About My Brother

B efore my brother Ben was killed in Afghanistan in 2009, Memorial Day was one of my favorite holidays. It meant parties with friends and family, all of us excited by a long weekend and the promise of summer ahead. The fact that Memorial Day was also about violent and traumatic loss was a more abstract and theoretical concept—until the year those losses included my big brother with the contagious giggle and the drive to serve.

For the first few years after Ben’s death, Memorial Day made me angry and indignant. We’re honoring my brother’s death with mattress sales and BBQs? I thought to myself. Nevermind that my brother enjoyed nothing more than barbequing and a good nap. He loved Memorial Day and all its contradictions. He could hold grief and joy together in a way that seemed effortless.

I began to dread attending the Memorial Day events I once enjoyed with him. Would people say anything to me? And did I want them to? Siblings are often asked questions that no one would dare ask a bereaved parent. Questions about how he died. How he really died. “What exactly happened that day?” “What happened after?” “How are your parents doing?” It’s amazing how many questions people can ask about your sibling’s death without ever stopping to ask about their life.

But which is worse: having someone say something or not? I’ve learned that being at that barbeque, knowing everyone else is aware of your loss and its connection to the day but receiving no acknowledgment at all is perhaps the worst outcome of all. I would be left feeling like the elephant in the room, trying to act like everything is fine when it most certainly was not.

The loss of a sibling is a unique form of grief that can be deeply traumatic at any age, and its long-term impact can be seen in every aspect of who we are. Siblings are supposed to be one of our longest shared relationships, and when that is cut short—as it always is when war is involved—siblings are left to pick up the pieces within their nuclear family and support grieving parents and loved ones. Many surviving siblings diminish their own grief so as not to further burden their already broken families, and find themselves struggling to address their loss even years later.

Studies have shown that surviving siblings have increased rates of depression and somatic symptoms, a lower sense of meaningfulness and benevolence in the world, and lower perceived self-worth. Siblings are also more likely to experience complicated grief or prolonged grief disorder, a form of intensified grief that often includes difficulty accepting the loss, preoccupation with the circumstances surrounding it, and a painful combination of bitterness, anger, yearning, and longing. What’s more, siblings grieving on Memorial Day in particular have experienced a violent loss which increases the likelihood that they’re experiencing traumatic grief ; a powerful grief and PTSD cocktail that can rewire your brain and leave you feeling unsafe and utterly alone in the world.

Surviving military siblings, especially, find ourselves dealing with the trauma of war without the sibling we expected to grow old with, our parents grieving so deeply we have nearly lost them, too. Gina Moffa, a trauma-informed grief therapist in NYC and author of the book Moving On Doesn’t Mean Letting Go, explained to me that “people often don't understand how re-traumatizing anniversaries can be for someone who experienced a military loss. While people are having a barbecue or enjoying a long weekend, surviving siblings are dealing with the symptoms of trauma as if they've just heard the news again for the first time.”

So what if you haven’t lost a loved one to war, but you’re celebrating Memorial Day with someone who has? Trickier still: What if it’s someone you don’t know well? Social support is one of the strongest antidotes we have to the loneliness and isolation that thrive alongside grief. It breaks the isolation and denial that allows traumatic and complicated grief to flourish.

What if Memorial Day wasn’t about how our siblings died, but about how they lived? Let me talk about my brother’s love of grilled meat in any form. Let me recount our sibling hijinx while we cut the berry cobbler. Instead of asking me to recount his murder, let me tell you about the time he and cousin Steven bought a turkey fryer a few days before Thanksgiving and attempted to deep fry everything in Aunt Jane’s kitchen.

I know this conversation is not easy for anyone involved. Grief and loss is an incredibly complex topic, and if I hadn’t been through loss myself, there’s no way I’d know how to approach someone that's grieving in moments like this. I’m a deeply curious person and I’d probably be ask too many detailed questions. But that also might make me the perfect person to give some advice here. Curiosity is valid and, more than anything, it’s human. But that’s also what Google is for; don’t put someone on the spot asking about their trauma. If you meet someone at a Memorial Day celebration this year who has lost someone in the military, store that info away to Google later and in that moment, focus on life. Ask, “What was your brother or sister’s name?” “Is it helpful to talk about them?” And if yes, “What were they like?”

Your simple question can bring a surviving sibling back to life during an otherwise traumatic day. As Moffa explains, “when somebody checks in and they're compassionate, patient, and supportive; when they just sit with us no matter how long it's been, we feel tethered again. We are tethered to something that can make us feel alive and open the space for joy and life again. It brings us back to ourselves. That check in can be a life saving experience.”

Supporting someone who is grieving this Memorial Day doesn’t mean canceling your plans and spending the day at the cemetery or ignoring all those things you want to do on your day off. It simply means reaching out and checking in, including them in your plans, and making sure they feel seen and heard on that day.

This Memorial Day, you have the power to heal. You have the power to reframe the day from one that memorializes a violent death to one that opens up the door to conversations about life.

My no-brainer foreign family getaway that costs under £1,000 – even in the school summer holidays

AS the summer holidays draw closer, an increasing number of package holiday deals drop into our inboxes.

Scrolling through the photos is like a slice of digital sunshine.

But then I immediately think of the impact of the cost-of-living crisis on our holiday fund.

If, however, you own a caravan, exploring Europe can be cheaper and easier than you think.

Last year, I received details of a fantastic villa holiday that included flights and car hire.

Perched on the edge of a coastal town in Brittany , it had a pool and was a short stroll from the beach.

With school-age kids, peak-season prices are unavoidable, so a seven-day break for our family of four in August was an eye-watering £4,500.

In the swinging Sixties, one in seven Brits would holiday in a caravan, so I wondered how much cash I could save by taking a Bailey Phoenix+ 650 caravan to a similar location with comparable facilities.

Could we holiday as a family for a around £1,000 instead of £4,500?

I began by searching for cost- effective ways to cross the Channel with a caravan.

A comparison website looked to be an early winner until I spotted a combined deal with The Caravan and Motorhome Club that saved £200 on the crossing alone if I booked the ferry and campsites at the same time.

Moreover, our caravan holiday was ABTA bonded.

And while air travel is quick, land travel is immersive, and the savings meant we could enjoy seven nights in Brittany plus an additional four nights in the Hauts-de- France and Normandy as we wound our way towards the Bay of Biscay.

The extra days felt like a free holiday as we made the most of the trip’s “there and back” element.

The Gallic sunshine was a welcome start with a stop-off at the 5H Camping La Bien Assise, just outside Calais .

Set in lush parkland, it features a restaurant in a lovely rustic former farm building.

Our next stop was Risle-Seine les Etangs, a lake-side site with a pool.

It was the perfect base as we traced the footsteps of family members who landed in Normandy on D-Day .

Our final destination in Brittany was Benodet, a popular spot for French holidaymakers thanks to the wide, sandy beach and bars and cafes that line the promenade.

The 4H Camping Du Poulquer, sits on the eastern edge of the beach and was chosen not just for the location, but also for facilities that rivalled that of the villa holiday.

The villa promised sun-filled dips in the pool and sand between our toes, but the caravan holiday delivered all of this along with a sizeable discount.

The outside pool upped the ante with some great slides and rides in the water park.

And for the days when the sun wasn’t shining, there was a heated indoor pool my wife loved, with a free hammam, sauna, hot tubs and hydromassage chairs to boot.

While we may not have had the privacy of the villa, our pitch, surrounded by hedges and apple trees, was just as good and came with electric included.

The campsite has a snack bar for lazy days and the big supermarkets in Benodet kept us under budget and well fed.

With the car on hand, we alternated between relaxing by the pool and devling into the area nearby.

We enjoyed thrips to the walled coastal fishing town of Concarneau, with its medieval centre, and the picturesque city of Quimper, with its twin-spired cathedral and pretty half-timbered houses.

Flying to a villa or hotel may be the norm for many, but towing your accommodation behind you allows you to really expore while saving a serious amount of money.

GETTING / STAYING THERE: The return Dover-to-Calais ferry crossing plus stays at campsites en route and in Benodet were booked through the Caravan and Motor­home Club and came to £834.

FUEL COSTS: I use a caravan-friendly satnav when towing, and although it lists fuel stations along our chosen route, the (free) Waze navigation app allows me to select one based on price.

We filled up with diesel just 300 yards from the dual-carriageway, saving 30 euro cents (26p) per litre.

Fuel costs for the whole journey totalled £266.

FOOD & DRINK: Restaurants on the promenade tend to be more expensive than those a street or two away.

Google Maps will reveal those away from the main thoroughfare.

They are often cheaper.
