Kolkata has always been the city of joy and happiness. Kolkata has a rich cultural background, and the heritage associated with my city makes it valuable and beautiful. Kolkata, previously known as Calcutta, was the capital of India during the British rule. It is a city that has a rich cultural history and is the intellectual hub of India. The British made Calcutta the capital city because it was the center of education, business, and economics. Kolkata has produced brave hearts, which have fought our National Struggle ever so courageously and have helped get freedom from the British.

My city is unique, and it amazes me to think of how wholesome Kolkata truly is. It has everything one can wish for, and its people have a secure attachment to their city. Kolkata is famous for its lip-smacking food and ancient monuments, and it is also known as the City of Joy. Kolkata is the city of emotions and festivities.

Kolkata has her essence. Not everybody will recognize her true beauty. It is not as technologically advanced as Bangalore or as posh as Mumbai, but Kolkata is a city with a soul. She will touch you in ways unknown to humankind and will give you the solace you have always craved. Kolkata is excellent as a city. You can never get tired of Kolkata. Living here is like pursuing a long lost dream of culture and inheritance. Kolkata shapes you in the classiest ways possible.

Heritage colleges like the Presidency University, Rajabazar Science College, Jadavpur University, etc. ensure that students get an excellent education. Kolkata has tremendous patriotic fervor, and it was where the first students’ movement began. The colleges teach moral values besides academic curriculums. Students know what god for their country is.

Kolkata was also the central hub of the Naxalite movement. The city shapes people in a way that they refuse to accept injustice. Kolkata has a strong political base, and the people here would do anything to stand up for what is right. Apart from the educational role, Kolkata also has advanced business centers. Every year, a business meeting is organized in Kolkata, and the economy is strengthened.

My city has countless spectacles. Sitting by the river Ganges on a chilly winter night, staring at the city lights on the other side as cars and buses rush past us is surreal. Be it the iconic Rabindra Setu or the Dakshineshwar Temple, Kolkata has many structures that have endured the ravages of time.

Coming to historical monuments, Kolkata is home to the famous Victoria Memorial, which is one of the most celebrated monuments of all time. The Indian Museum, located near Esplanade, is again a structure that has mesmerized tourists. The Indian Museum is an excellent source of research and has countless wonders.

My city has woven its members in a string of love and values. Kolkata accepts everyone. The ever welcoming Academy Gates has given place to all artists with out-stretched arms. The smell of freshly brewed coffee in roadside cafes, the awe-striking Christmas decorations in Park Street, the inevitable Nostalgia in Coffee House, and the flood of amazing books in College Street, every bit of Kolkata inspires us to love ourselves and be better human beings.

Shivaji University was established there in 1962. To the south of Kolhapur is the urban complex of Gokul Shirgaon, which specializes in food processing (milk) and the production of pharmaceuticals . About District

Kolhapur city is situated on the banks of Panchganga river and is surrounded by  Sahyadri mountain ranges. It is a city known for its historical forts, temples and royal places of erstwhile royals. It is one of the best places to explore the splendor and magnificence of India.

Kolhapur (Marathi: कोल्हापूर) is a city in the south west of Maharashtra . It has a population of around 619,000. It is situated on the banks of river Panchganga and is famous for the Mahalakshmi Temple . The city also lends its name to many things it is famous for, like Kolhapuri Chappal, Kolhapuri Lavangi Mirchi, Kolhapuri Gul (Jaggery), Kolhapuri Pailvan (Wrestler), Kolhapuri Mutton and spicy Kolhapuri Cuisine.

The history of Kolhapur can be tracked back to the Satavahan Empire era.

In the modern times, Kolhapur has played a significant role in the politics of Maharashtra state. The city is famous of Kolhapur SAAJ (necklaces with traditional patterns), jaggery, Kolhapur chappal (traditional leather sandals) and wrestling. Kolhapur is also famous for its non-veg food recipes (Marathi: Kolhapuri pandhara rassa, tambadaa rassa) and unique spices.

Kolhapur is on the Pune-Miraj-Kolhapur section of the Central Railway. The railway station is named after Chatrapati Shahu Maharaj. It is well connected with all the important cities in India. Mahalakshmi, Koyna and Sahyadri express connect Mumbai to Kolhapur and they run daily. Miraj is the nearmost major railway station and is well connected to important cities in India. From Kolhapur Railway Station, there are daily trains for Mumbai, Nagpur, Pune, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Tirupati, while weekly trains also run for Delhi, Ahmedabad and Dhanbad.

Kolhapur lies on National Highway 4 a.k.a NH4 which connects Mumbai to Bangalore . Mumbai to Kolhapur is an 8-hour drive by road. Pune to Kolhapur is around 3 hours journey by private car, while bus takes around 4 hours. The road is excellent and almost like Pune-Mumbai express highway.

The MSRTC (Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation) has buses running every 30 minutes from Pune to Kolhapur and vice versa. These are A/C, Non-A/C general transport buses and cost approximately ₹220 for Non A/C & ₹360 for A/C. There are also hourly buses from Mumbai, which are non-A/C general transport buses and cost approximately ₹180-₹240.

Private operators also operate buses on this route with A/C and Non-A/C option, the fare ranging from ₹200 to ₹350.

Similar options are available from Pune. The private/state buses and shared taxis all start from Swar-Gate in Pune which is a large bus/transport hub to the south of Pune.

From the south side, there are direct buses (private and state-owned) from almost all places from Karnataka, including Bangalore, Belgaon, Mangalore, and Hubali.

Overall, Kolhapur has become a crowded place. Huge number of two wheeler vehicles precides over the number of four wheelers (private & commercial). The central city being non-planned is very crowded during peak hours. Also, due to many road constructions going on, the roads are jammed. You can avoid traffic jams by travelling on newly built roads, which are much more wider and better ones. Auto rickshaw is the popular public transport available.

There are quite a few car rental agencies in Kolhapur. Most of them charge around ₹2400 a day for a mid-size car. There are extra charges for distances above 250 km.

Inside City

• 16.694677 74.222388 1 Mahalaxmi Temple ( Mahalaxmi Mandir ) ( about 5 km from Central Bus Stand and Railway Station, towards centre of the city ). The puranas have listed 108 sites where Shakti (the goddess of power) is manifested. Amongst these, the Karveer area (the area where the present town of Kolhapur is located), is of special significance. This is one of the six abodes of Shakti, where one can achieve both fulfillment of desires as well as salvation from them. It is therefore considered to be of greater significance than Uttar Kashi. Shri Mahalakshmi is the consort of Shri Vishnu and it is said that they both reside in the Karveer area. Mahalakshmi also known as Goddess Ambabai enjoys status of one of the important spiritual centers in India. Construction of the temple was initiated in 7th century by Chalukya rulers and further beautified by Yadavas until 9th Century AD. Garuda Mandap used for concerts by renowned artists was built in 1838 AD. During Navratri Festival, the temple is well decorated with lights, flowers and renowned musicians, Kirtankars, artists pay their homage by performing for goddess in front of public at large in temple. The 'Aarati' ritual is most important. Daily at 5:30AM when the Mandir is opened, Aarati is performed after the worship of the idol's feet. This is called 'Kakadarati.' Devotional songs in 'Bhup-Rag' are recited at that time. At 8:30AM Mahapooja occurs followed by 'Mangalarati.' At 12:30PM, worship with fragrant flowers & Kumkum is done for the devotees camphor is burnt and 'Naivedya' (Rich dishes) is offered. If there is no Mahapooja from devotees, milk instead of Panchamrut (milk, curds, sugar, ghee & honey) is spilled on the feet followed by Aarati. This process continues until about 2PM. This is followed with a 'Pooja' where the goddess is offered ornaments. In the interiors of the Mandir, Vedic hymns are chanted. After 7:30PM, with ringing of bells, 'Aarati' is performed. This is called the 'Bhog -Aarati'. The ritual of 'Abhishek Vidhi'is carried on throughout the day. Weekends and long weekends see a lot of rush. One can also pray to the goddess through Mukh Darshan , for which there are shorter queues but one gets the darshan of the goddess from a distance. Cameras are not allowed inside the temple complex, but one can see many people using their mobile cameras to take pictures and selfies.

• Temlabai Mandir . Temblai hill is a famous spot in Kolhapur. There is a temple of Goddess "Temlabai" and other small temple on this Hill. In every Ashadha the religious ceremony of pouring water on the steps of the Mandir is celebrated on a grand scale. There is a Yamai Mandir also on this hill. A statue of Shivaji Maharaj is raised by the Devasthan Committee. A huge idol of "Ganpati" is situated at the center of the hill-top. A small garden is developed for visitors. Every year during the month of "Shravan" a one day celebration known as "Tryamboli Yatra" takes place. People from Kolhapur and all other regions visit this place during the yatra. During Navratra Utsav procession of "Mahalakshmi" is carried from Ambabai Temple to Temblabai Temple. It is said that Goddess "Temlabai" & Goddess "Mahalakshmi" are sisters. During the war against devils, Goddess "Temlabai" helped Goddess "Mahalakshmi" but after the victory Goddess "Mahalakshmi" did not give her the due respect which made Goddess "Temlabai" angry and thus she came and settled on Temblai Hill. Hence, this procession is carried during Navratri, where it is believed, that on this day Goddess Mahalakshmi meets Goddess Temlabai, and people worship her with all devotion.

• Bahubali . This site is revered by both Hindus and Jains. Devotees flock here to pay respect to the 28 feet tall marble statue of Bahubali and visit the temples of the 24 tirthankaras or saints. This site is 27 km to the south of Kolhapur.  
• 16.34848 73.91395 5 Dajipur Bison Sanctuary ( Radhanagari Wildlife Sanctuary ) ( it is about 80 km away from Kolhapur, Radhanagari to Dajipur distance is 30 km ). The forest area of Dajipur is on the border of Kolhapur and Sindhudurg districts. Surrounded by rugged mountains and dense forests, this secluded little place is completely cut off from human habitat, but is home to bison, wild deer, gava (bison), and many more spectacular wild animals and birds. An excursion in the vicinity to the Gagangiri Maharaj's Math makes for a pleasant outing. There is a scenic resort near the backwaters of Radhanagari dam which is highly recommended for wildlife lovers. Dajipur is an exciting and beautiful holiday getaway 1200 m above sea level. The roads are not motorable in rainy season.  
• 16.54351 73.83161 6 Gaganbawda . A hill station about 2-3 hours from CBS (Central Bus Stand, Kolhapur) and Kolhapur Railway Station. Excellent climate during the rainy season.  
• Gagangiri Maharaj Math ( Temple ) ( at Gaganbawda ). Gagangiri Maharaj was a great yogi. One of the few living sages having unique capacities, vision and synthesis. Gagangiri Maharaj Math is renowned as a spiritual destination for domestic and foreign travelers. The Math is located in the midst of dense forests and thick green vegetation at Dajipur nearby Kolhapur. Shri Gagangiri Maharaj was a Hindu Sanyasi (Sage) following the Nath Sampradaya.The life and history of the sage tells that Gagangiri Maharaj spent many years in this Math undergoing penance from 1932 to 1940. The Sage spent all these years in meditation in the deep jungle in this Math. This Ashram offers the Hindu teachings, yoga and meditation practices and also serves as a religious temple for the devotees. It is an attractive place for meditation, yoga and to clearly understand the Indian culture and its religious importance.

Jyotiba is supposed to be an incarnation of three gods -- Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh and the seer Jamadagni. A colorful fair takes place on the full moon night of the Hindu months of Chaitra and Vaishakh. During the fair, Devotees from various regions hoist "Sasan Kathi", which is the holy symbol of lord Jyotiba

The artistic temple of Kopeshwar or Mahadev at Khidrapur is a treasure-house of beautifully carved sculptures and a rare architectural marvel. This fort was built between the 1178-1209 AD, this is the only fort where the great ruler, Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, is believed to have spent more than 500 days. The history of Panhala Fort is one of the oldest, and famous amongst Maratha warriors. Sajja Kothi, where Sambhaji was imprisoned. Ambabai Temple, where Shivaji used to seek blessings before venturing on expeditions. In addition to history, Panhala at an altitude of 977 m offers some inspiring scenery and a soothing climate. An average temperature of 25 °C.It is a must place to visit, while in Kolhapur. As you enter the fort complex, there is a statue of Baji Prabhu Deshpande who defended the Pawan Khind during Shivaji's escape. There is a parking area on the left. Women's self help groups have setup many eateries where one can enjoy the traditional pithla-bhakri (bread and gram-flour dish). A 45 minute journey, accompanied by beautiful landscape, a trip to Panhala will surely be a memorable one!

• Siddhagiri Gramjivan Museum . A unique project, perhaps the only project in India situated at Shri Kshetra Siddhagiri Math, Kaneri, Tal. Karveer, Dist. Kolhapur. The place is near Kolhapur city on Pune Bangalore Highway. Shri Kshetra Siddhagiri Math has a history of more than 1000 years, and is a holy place of worship of Lord Mahadeva. The surrounding around the museum is very calm and quiet, a hilly place with a good collection of Flora and Fauna. The project is a dream village of Mahatma Gandhi, visually and symbolically created through the vision and efforts of present 27th Mathadhipati H.H. Adrushya Kadsiddheshwar Swamiji. The main objective of the Project is to refresh the history of self sufficient village life before the invasion of Mughals in Maharashtra. There were 12 BALUTEDARS (12 main profession based casts i.e. Professions performed by generation by family members) and 18 ALUTEDARS, who provided equipments to all villagers useful in their day-to-day necessities of domestic as well as Agricultural life. These Balutedars, Alutedars and others had a special characteristics with which they served society. The description of all 18 Alutedars, 12 balutedars and other people and there duties are vividly depicted in the museum. The first phase of the museum spans over 7 Acres of area with almost 80 main scenes and around 300 statues. Several subtle village lifestyles are taken into consideration. There is a unique combination of expression, accuracy and liveliness in the whole village. Each sculpture has a multi dimensional effect and lifestyle theme which Swamiji very keenly arranged each and every scene to make a proper visual story. In the total cluster the village demonstrate a self sufficient machinery within village. Barter economy, Interpersonal healthy happy relationship among villagers is reflected. The Museum projects the entire village as a single family, and as single family members in a joint family. No adulteration, no cut thought practice, no mad Rat Race, No pollution, but Caring, and delightful atmosphere, no bitter feeling, but fertile land, clean water, clean air, quality food, maximum use of natural resources, cattle field, livestock, job satisfaction. All these things are reflecting the beauty, Joy, satisfaction of human race and oneness with nature. It advises us to get back to nature, without disturbing the equilibrium of nature and many other things which are beyond our imagination.  

A visit to Mahalaxmi Temple can be followed by a trip to Panhala Fort. The Auto Rickshaw charges approx. ₹450 for Panhala Trip from Kolhapur to Panhala and back. The visit will take around 6 hrs and after coming back to Kolhapur city one can go to Rankala Lake in evening and visit Shalini Palace Hotel and Chowpatty there. One can enjoy snacks from vada pav to South Indian dishes at the Chowpatty.

Next day one can start the morning in Kolhapur with a visit to New Palace Museum. After seeing museum one can proceed to Jyotiba Temple.

It is also recommended to visit a local" Gurhal" a traditional family owned Jaggery Making place just outside of the city. Here you can watch local people make jaggery from scratch with sugarcane juice. They are also open for visitors to try and taste fresh sugarcane juice and jaggery.

One should also visit Bhavani Temple near Mahalaxmi Temple.

Also to visit is much forgotten "Ruikar Colony" which was Maharashtra state's first Residential Bunglow estate (and so far the only estate that has remained like this and most estates are now being converted to apartments) Ruikar Colony, always featured in Marathi Films, is famous for its huge beautiful mansions complimented by landscaped gardens, nature strips, well designed roads, community gardens, Ganesh and Jain Temple, playground and Community Hall and its own shopping area.

• Kalamba ( Lake ), Kalamba ( about 6-7 km from CBS ). It's very beautiful place, where various birds come every year.  
• Jaggery .  
• Kolhapuri Chappals .  
• Kolhapuri Saaj . One of the best place to buy Kolhapuri Saaj and other antique jewellery is Karekar Jewellers (Rajarampuri). Here you will find the best saaj and one of the best collections in Antique jewellery.  
• Sarees .  

Kolhapur is well known paradise for non vegetarian lovers, but it has many eating options equally wonderful for vegetarian food. Also, in general there is a misconception about "Kolhapur" food that it has to be really spicy and having lot of chillies. Only when you visit Kolhapur, one realizes that this is a myth.

Once in Kolhapur, you should never miss out on misal, which is a famous Maharashtrian snack made from spicy sprouted moth beans. Authentic misal can be tasted only in Kolhapur. Outside Kolhapur, in many other places in Maharashtra, people only add lot of oil and red chilly and serve it as 'kolhapuri misal'. There are many famous misal eating joints.

It has been featured extensively in print and television media, but owners still prefer to run this place in the backyard of old factory in an industrial area. • Akkha Masur . a famous local mini-meal- red lentil curry in thick tomato-cashew base served with Bharaki (local bread) and chillis. you can find this in Bawda area -popular hawker food.

Architecture of Indian Cities- Kolhapur- Roots of Heritage

Dakshin Kashi, a city known to be located on the banks of the Panchganga River, southern-western zone of the state Maharashtra, surrounded by Sahyadri mountain ranges is famous for being ruled by multiple kings belonging to different backgrounds. Bhonsle was the one amongst the Maratha dynasty who ruled the district since 1730. According to mythology, Kolhapur is a residing place of Laxmi, Ardhangani of Lord Vishnu, who settled here after a fight with her husband. She killed a demon named Kolhasur, whose last wish was to name his place of birth after his name, so the region was named as Kolhapur.

A place is a reflection of its people and time so is the city Kolhapur, reflecting the knowledge and beliefs of the kings that ruled over there, hence the city is rich in forts, temples, and palaces becoming a place to be explored for its magnificent and grandeur of India. Other than the architectural marvels the city is celebrated for Kolhapuri chappals; Indian handcrafted leather slippers and Kolhapuri Saaj; A unique necklace made by local jewelers. Apart from the architectural beauty, the historical and cultural richness of the city makes it a touristic place.

1. Maharaja palace:

Maharaja Palace, also known as “New Palace” is a blend of Rajasthani, Gujarati, and Jain style architecture, built by British architect Mant in 1884. Want to explore the history of Chhatrapati? Their clothes, living styles, games, pieces of jewelry, weapons, or royal culture, this palace is a must-visit. Housing a zoo, museum, and multiple parks, this palace stands out from other places in the city.

2. Binkhambi Ganesh Mandir, Kolhapur

An outstanding example of architecture; carved out of a pillar, whose roof is not supported by even a single column makes it stand out from many architectural marvels. The temple is also said as a breathing escape from the crowded locality, the streetscape leading to the temple is beautifully occupied by local street food, books, and souvenirs. Tourists visit the temple for its unique architectural features and local people visit the place regularly and mostly during festivals like Ganesh Chaturthi and Sankasthis.

3. Vishal ghat fort

The oldest structure in the hilltop of Kolhapur is a fort built by Marsinh, a Shilahara ruler. The fort is rich with several historical monuments inside the campus, including  Shri Nrusinha Temple, the Tomb of Hazrat Malik Raihan, the Amruteshwar Temple, Takmak Tok, and Sati’s Vrindavan. It also has samadhi of Phulaji Prabhu Deshpande and Baji Prabhu Deshpande who has a story of giving up their lives for Shivaji. With the historical stories and monuments, the fort itself is downing into ruins, overlooking the whole city since 1058 AD.

4. Bhawani mandap

The biggest and oldest monument of the city Kolhapur “Bhawani mandap” is now re-adapted as a public heritage site that was used for courts during the times of Marathas and the palace of Chhatrapati Maharaj. The mandap was constructed with fine carving and it had 14 square but during 1813 the palace was invaded by a Muslim and half of its part was burnt; only 7 squares were survived. With great warriors and their stories, the mandap also has sacred importance which makes the place publicly engaged.

5. Mahalakshmi temple

With the beautiful Indian architectural style, back then since the 7th century, the place holds a scientific beauty of Indian beliefs. As justified by the name the temple encloses Mahalaxmi’s deity at the center who is worshipped by Indians as an idol signifies money. The temple is famous for the festival of sun rays, named as Kirnotsav celebration. This is the day when sun rays directly fall in Garbhagriha, on the Mahalaxmi idol.

6. Kopeshwar temple

Kopeshwar, on the banks of Krishna River, is a temple enclosing lord Vishnu idol with a Shivling named Kopleshwar facing north. It was built in the 11th century and was renovated afterward. The temple is a carved beauty with 92 elephants in the exterior and 108 pillars in the interior. Inside the temple, a semi-circular ceiling makes it unique and gives it a value of ancient sculpture.

7. Sajja Kothi

Located in Panhala fort, Sajja Kothi is a marvelous architectural spot to be seen while visiting the fort in the city. Built-in Mughal architectural style, the Kothi is not only rich in historical evidence but attracts tourism with its aesthetic value.

8. Ramling caves, temples, Palsambe

A sacred religious site with architectural ruins, the rambling cave is a worthwhile drive nearby, signifying the city of the temple in and around the city. Surrounded by green foliages, with medicinal plants and serene environments this site adds a sacred value to the city.

9. Shalini palace

The Palace named after the princess of Kolhapur, Shalini is a great example of Italian architecture, carved out with black marble, intricately carved wooden doors and windows fitted with Belgium glass signifies its magnificent richness of that time. The palace was built in 1931-34 and converted into a 3-star hotel afterward.

10. Shopping in Kolhapur

Last but not the least, shopping! Every city is famous for something, and that something adds a unique value defining a place’s individuality and local culture. Kolhapur is famous for Kolhapuri chappals (slippers), Kolhapuri Saaj (jewelry), and jaggery comes in the locally famous products of the city.

The city Kolhapur is an amalgamation of sacred religious beliefs and Maratha history. With local craft richness, the city has a significant architectural and touristic value.

Jyotiba is believed to be an incarnation of Lord Shiva, and one of the three main embodiments of God- Mahesh, Vishnu, and Brahma. Each year on the two full moon days (namely, Vaishakh and Chaitra) a big fair is held near the temple which attracts hordes of locals and outsiders who travel to Kolhapur. You can easily reach the temple by hiring a local auto. It is open on all days of the week and does not charge anything.

8. Bhavani Mandap

Bhavani Mandap is a small quaint monument nestled inside the walled city of Kolhapur. The place has rich historical significance and was built a long time ago. The Mandap is also referred to as “the glory” of Kolhapur, constructed during the reign of King Shivaji Maharaja II. Bhavani Mandap used to belong to the king of Kolhapur as one of his palaces and was also used as a durbar. The king conducted important meetings, litigations, and celebrations inside this building. The place also had living quarters for many of its court officials. A colossal statue is placed right in front of the Mandap, of the most loved king of Kolhapur, Shahu Maharaj, who was practically under the British Raj throughout his reign. There are many interesting artefacts on display here, such as the stuffed trophies of deer and panthers, which were hunted by the King. One such piece is a giant stuffed bison on which, many threads of saffron are generously spread. A wooden throne is also on display and it is believed to be one that was used by the ruler Shivaji during his visits to Kolhapur. The Mandap was divided into 14 squares, but after major attacks by the British army, 7 of them got destroyed.

9. Panhala Fort

Panhala Fort, also known as Panhalgad, is a fortress located 21 km to the northwest of Kolhapur, and one of the major tourist attractions. The construction of the fort was finished in the 13th century and was built by Raja Bhoja II. The geographical location of this place was ideal for fortification as it oversaw the Sahyadri pass which served as an important trade route of Bijapur. Because of its strategic location in the Deccan, many conflicts and skirmishes took place here in history between the British, Marathas, and Mughals. The famous queen ruler, Tarabai, spent years in this ancient fort.

The Panhala Fort is one of the most massive forts in the Deccan land, its perimeter stretching to 15 km, and the fort stands at an altitude of over 2700 feet above sea level. Several underground tunnels run from underneath the fortress, many of which are over a kilometer long.

The biggest attractions of the fort are the Teen Darwaza, Amber Khana, Sajja Kothi, Dharma Kothi, along with several temples and mausoleums. The architecture of the place resembles the typical Bijapuri style. You will be taken aback to see the Andar Bavadi (translates to hidden well). It consists of 3 stories with winding stairways concealing the well that acted as the primary source of water for the warriors. This is because whenever an outside force besieged a fort, they poisoned the water. Besides its brilliant design, it also houses many hidden exit routes. The Andar Bavadi is, therefore, a fort within a fortress that has its source of water, quarters, and escape routes. No wonder, it is one of the special places to see in Kolhapur. About Kolhapur City     Kolhapur is famous for being a centre of Art, education, industry and sports, particularly wrestling. Here the wrestling is called as "Kusti" and wrestlers are known as "Malla". This wrestling match is played in the square clay ground which is known as "Akhada". Similar to "The Operation Flood" project in Gujrat, in Kolhapur the "Warna Project" was started and till date is famous for huge amount of generation of milk and milk products which are transported to the all over of India.  Kolhapur comes under sugarcane belt and because of this people are very rich and live prosperous life. Kolhapuri chappals are renowned for their durability and beauty of make.  “Kolhapuri Saaj” is a special type of neckless which is very popular with Maharastrian Women. The 'saaj' is designed in all over Maharashtra but the Kolhapuri Saaj is very famous. It is an important centre of Marathi film industry. Kolhapur possesses historical as well as mythological importance. It is known as Dakshin kashi on account of its deity Mahalakshmi or Ambabai. The Ambabai temple was built by the Chalukya King Karnadeve in 634 AD.The Irwin Agricultural Museum of Kolhapur has some old Andhra coins. Bahubali, Jain Pilgrim centre, lies at a distance of 38 km from Kolhapur.      It is a one-hour journey from Bombay to Kolhapur by air. The Ujalaiwadi airport is 10-km away from Kolhapur Main City. One can also travel from Kolhapur to the nearest Airport Pune , which is 238-Km away.    Kolhapur has a railway station and it's an 11-hour journey from Mumbai or Bangalore to Kolhapur.    Kolhapur is about 450-km south of Mumbai and it's a ten to eleven hour journey from Mumbai or Banglore to Kolhapur by road. Maharashtra State Transport Corporation (MSTC) has regular service in this route with semi luxury and regular buses. Even private bus service is available to reach here from Mumbai, Pune, Goa, Solapur (also spelt as Sholapur) and Bangalore.    Auto-rickshaws are the most common mode of transport along with the bus service run by the municipal corporation. Taxis are available.      The maharaja's 'new' palace, completed in 1881, houses the Shahaji Chhatrapati Museum, one of the most bizarre collections of memorabilia in India. The building was designed by 'Mad' Charles Mant, the British architect who fashioned the Indo-saracenic style of colonial architecture and is a cross between a Victorian railway station and the Addams Family mansion. The palace contains a weird and wonderful array of the old maharaja's possessions including his clothes, old hunt photos, silver peocock-shaped elephant saddles and the memorial silver spade he used to 'turn the first sod of the Kolhapur State Railway' in 1888. But dominating every room in the palace are reminders of the maharaja's passion: killing wild animals to decorate his palace.  Skins cover floors and furniture, trophy heads stare blankly from the walls, ashtrays, and coffee tables are made from tiger and elephant feet, lamp stands from ostrich legs and zebra hoofs. The variety of stuffed animals includes a black bear, rhino, pangolin, panther and an entire pride of lions in a forest diorama! There is even a painting of the Maharani entitled 'The world's Greatest Woman Pig Sticker'. The gun and sword collection could easily outfit a small army: dozens of swords, axes, pistols, punt guns, and instruments, of torture fill the armaments room. The most unusual piece is a gold-plated, double barrelled shotgun. The palace is a few km north of the center.    It is a little-visited hill station 18km northwest of Kolhapur, and makes an interesting excursion from Kolhapur. The hilltop fort has a long and convoluted history. It was originally the stronghold of Raja Bhoj II in 1192, was captured by both the Mughals and the Marathas and was finally taken by the British in 1844. We also went to the place when my maternal aunt and cousins visited us. I can visit Imam Bara over and over again and still not get bored. We often visited marine drive in the evening. Chandigarh City – Planned and Organized Chandigarh is known to be a well-planned city. It is appreciated for its design and architecture all over the world. Since it was the dream city of the then Indian Prime Minister, Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru special care was taken to build its architecture. American Architect, Albert Mayer was specially called to lay its design. Popular French architect Le Corbusier designed various buildings and contributed to the city’s architecture. The city is divided into various sectors and each sector has its own market and residential area. The city is well planted with a variety of beautiful trees. Chandigarh’s main attraction is the Sukhna Lake which is an artificial lake in sector 1. It was created in 1958 and has since been one of the most happening spots in the city. The people of Chandigarh have kept up with the systematic approach it was built with. Not only is the city well designed but it is also kept extremely clean in every way. You will not find any litter around as is seen in various other parts of the country. Traffic police in the city is extremely vigilant. No one can dare to break the traffic rules here. The discipline is maintained at every level. People live in peace and harmony here. Sukhna Lake – My Favourite Spot My favourite spot in the city is of course Sukhna Lake. The place is becoming happening by the day. The atmosphere here in the morning is completely different compared to that in the evening. In the morning, the place is calm and serene filled with fresh air. It is the best place to relax and unwind. In the evening, it is crowded with people enjoying boat rides and having snacks. Electronic swings have also been installed for children. The place is full of hustle and bustle during the evening hours. It is a good place to go out with friends as well as family. I can visit the place early morning as well as in the evening. I love it when it is calm and quite as well as when it is full of people. Chandigarh is not just my city, it is my lifeline. I wish to spend all my life here. I don’t think I will be able to live as happily and peacefully in any other city. During that era, the city was known by the name, Indraprastha. The Old Fort (Purana Qila) is said to have been constructed during that time. Delhi’s Beautiful Monuments Delhi is known for its beautiful monuments. There are a number spectacular monuments standing tall since centuries. Many new edifices have been built later and are as magnificent. Tourists from around the world visit Delhi to see these monuments. Here is a look at some of the most popular monuments in my city: Red fort is one of the oldest monuments in Delhi. Made of red sandstone, the fort encompasses various museums. This brilliant piece of architecture was built by the Mughals in the 16 th century. The Mughal emperors lived here for almost 200 years. Humayun’s Tomb It is said that Humayun’s Tomb is a replica of the marvellous Taj Mahal. It is made with red sandstone and white marble. The tomb is an example of the Persian style of Islamic architecture. The tomb is 47 metres high and 91 metres wide and is surrounded by beautiful Persian-style garden. Lotus Temple As the name suggests, this temple is built in the shape of a lotus. It has 27 petals made of white marble. It has nine doors that open into the main hall. The marvellous edifice is big enough to accommodate up to 2500 people at a time. Lotus Temple is a Bahai House of Worship however it is open for people belonging to any religion. Qutub Minar Yet another architectural brilliance, Qutub Minar is also made of red sand stone. It was built by Qutub Ud-Din-Aibak. This 73 metre tall edifice is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It consists of five storeys that are connected through spiral staircase. India Gate is yet another historical monument in the city that draws numerous tourists from around the world. The names of martyrs are engraved on this monument. The Amar Jawan Jyoti lit under this monument is a tribute to the Indian soldiers. Akshar Dham Temple Akshar Dham Temple is a place of devotion and purity. It is the latest addition in the list of monuments in Delhi. It was opened for public in the year 2005. Besides the beautifully carved temple and other marvellous buildings, the Akshar Dham complex includes lush green gardens and water bodies. I have been to all these places and can visit these over and over again. I have beautiful memories of these places. Apart from the historical monuments, Delhi also includes numerous places to shop around. It can certainly be called a shopper’s delight. I love visiting different markets that do not only give me an opportunity to buy good stuff but also gives me a chance to have delectable street food. The Bottom Line What's next, what kind of help with your essay can you get. Rather than talking in general terms about "help," let's first clarify the two different ways that someone else can improve your writing . There is editing, which is the more intensive kind of assistance that you can use throughout the whole process. And then there's proofreading, which is the last step of really polishing your final product. Let me go into some more detail about editing and proofreading, and then explain how good editors and proofreaders can help you." Editing is helping the author (in this case, you) go from a rough draft to a finished work . Editing is the process of asking questions about what you're saying, how you're saying it, and how you're organizing your ideas. But not all editing is good editing . In fact, it's very easy for an editor to cross the line from supportive to overbearing and over-involved. Ability to clarify assignments. A good editor is usually a good writer, and certainly has to be a good reader. For example, in this case, a good editor should make sure you understand the actual essay prompt you're supposed to be answering. Open-endedness. Good editing is all about asking questions about your ideas and work, but without providing answers. It's about letting you stick to your story and message, and doesn't alter your point of view. Think of an editor as a great travel guide. It can show you the many different places your trip could take you. It should explain any parts of the trip that could derail your trip or confuse the traveler. But it never dictates your path, never forces you to go somewhere you don't want to go, and never ignores your interests so that the trip no longer seems like it's your own. So what should good editors do? Help Brainstorm Topics Sometimes it's easier to bounce thoughts off of someone else. This doesn't mean that your editor gets to come up with ideas, but they can certainly respond to the various topic options you've come up with. This way, you're less likely to write about the most boring of your ideas, or to write about something that isn't actually important to you. Help Revise Your Drafts Here, your editor can't upset the delicate balance of not intervening too much or too little. It's tricky, but a great way to think about it is to remember: editing is about asking questions, not giving answers . Revision questions should point out: Places where more detail or more description would help the reader connect with your essay Places where structure and logic don't flow, losing the reader's attention Places where there aren't transitions between paragraphs, confusing the reader Moments where your narrative or the arguments you're making are unclear But pointing to potential problems is not the same as actually rewriting—editors let authors fix the problems themselves. Bad editing is usually very heavy-handed editing. Instead of helping you find your best voice and ideas, a bad editor changes your writing into their own vision. You may be dealing with a bad editor if they: Add material (examples, descriptions) that doesn't come from you Use a thesaurus to make your college essay sound "more mature" Add meaning or insight to the essay that doesn't come from you Tell you what to say and how to say it Write sentences, phrases, and paragraphs for you Change your voice in the essay so it no longer sounds like it was written by a teenager Colleges can tell the difference between a 17-year-old's writing and a 50-year-old's writing. Not only that, they have access to your SAT or ACT Writing section, so they can compare your essay to something else you wrote. Writing that's a little more polished is great and expected. But a totally different voice and style will raise questions. Where's the Line Between Helpful Editing and Unethical Over-Editing? Sometimes it's hard to tell whether your college essay editor is doing the right thing. Here are some guidelines for staying on the ethical side of the line. An editor should say that the opening paragraph is kind of boring, and explain what exactly is making it drag. But it's overstepping for an editor to tell you exactly how to change it. An editor should point out where your prose is unclear or vague. But it's completely inappropriate for the editor to rewrite that section of your essay. An editor should let you know that a section is light on detail or description. But giving you similes and metaphors to beef up that description is a no-go. Proofreading (also called copy-editing) is checking for errors in the last draft of a written work. It happens at the end of the process and is meant as the final polishing touch. Proofreading is meticulous and detail-oriented, focusing on small corrections. It sands off all the surface rough spots that could alienate the reader. Because proofreading is usually concerned with making fixes on the word or sentence level, this is the only process where someone else can actually add to or take away things from your essay . This is because what they are adding or taking away tends to be one or two misplaced letters. Laser focus. Proofreading is all about the tiny details, so the ability to really concentrate on finding small slip-ups is a must. Excellent grammar and spelling skills. Proofreaders need to dot every "i" and cross every "t." Good proofreaders should correct spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar. They should put foreign words in italics and surround quotations with quotation marks. They should check that you used the correct college's name, and that you adhered to any formatting requirements (name and date at the top of the page, uniform font and size, uniform spacing). Limited interference. A proofreader needs to make sure that you followed any word limits. But if cuts need to be made to shorten the essay, that's your job and not the proofreader's. A bad proofreader either tries to turn into an editor, or just lacks the skills and knowledge necessary to do the job. Some signs that you're working with a bad proofreader are: If they suggest making major changes to the final draft of your essay. Proofreading happens when editing is already finished. If they aren't particularly good at spelling, or don't know grammar, or aren't detail-oriented enough to find someone else's small mistakes. If they start swapping out your words for fancier-sounding synonyms, or changing the voice and sound of your essay in other ways. A proofreader is there to check for errors, not to take the 17-year-old out of your writing. What Do Colleges Think of Your Getting Help With Your Essay? Admissions officers agree: light editing and proofreading are good—even required ! But they also want to make sure you're the one doing the work on your essay. They want essays with stories, voice, and themes that come from you. They want to see work that reflects your actual writing ability, and that focuses on what you find important. On the Importance of Editing Get feedback. Have a fresh pair of eyes give you some feedback. Don't allow someone else to rewrite your essay, but do take advantage of others' edits and opinions when they seem helpful. ( Bates College ) Read your essay aloud to someone. Reading the essay out loud offers a chance to hear how your essay sounds outside your head. This exercise reveals flaws in the essay's flow, highlights grammatical errors and helps you ensure that you are communicating the exact message you intended. ( Dickinson College ) On the Value of Proofreading Share your essays with at least one or two people who know you well—such as a parent, teacher, counselor, or friend—and ask for feedback. Remember that you ultimately have control over your essays, and your essays should retain your own voice, but others may be able to catch mistakes that you missed and help suggest areas to cut if you are over the word limit. ( Yale University ) Proofread and then ask someone else to proofread for you. Although we want substance, we also want to be able to see that you can write a paper for our professors and avoid careless mistakes that would drive them crazy. ( Oberlin College ) On Watching Out for Too Much Outside Influence Limit the number of people who review your essay. Too much input usually means your voice is lost in the writing style. ( Carleton College ) Ask for input (but not too much). Your parents, friends, guidance counselors, coaches, and teachers are great people to bounce ideas off of for your essay. They know how unique and spectacular you are, and they can help you decide how to articulate it. Keep in mind, however, that a 45-year-old lawyer writes quite differently from an 18-year-old student, so if your dad ends up writing the bulk of your essay, we're probably going to notice. ( Vanderbilt University ) Now let's talk about some potential people to approach for your college essay editing and proofreading needs. It's best to start close to home and slowly expand outward. Not only are your family and friends more invested in your success than strangers, but they also have a better handle on your interests and personality. This knowledge is key for judging whether your essay is expressing your true self. Parents or Close Relatives Your family may be full of potentially excellent editors! Parents are deeply committed to your well-being, and family members know you and your life well enough to offer details or incidents that can be included in your essay. On the other hand, the rewriting process necessarily involves criticism, which is sometimes hard to hear from someone very close to you. A parent or close family member is a great choice for an editor if you can answer "yes" to the following questions. Is your parent or close relative a good writer or reader? Do you have a relationship where editing your essay won't create conflict? Are you able to constructively listen to criticism and suggestion from the parent? One suggestion for defusing face-to-face discussions is to try working on the essay over email. Send your parent a draft, have them write you back some comments, and then you can pick which of their suggestions you want to use and which to discard. Teachers or Tutors A humanities teacher that you have a good relationship with is a great choice. I am purposefully saying humanities, and not just English, because teachers of Philosophy, History, Anthropology, and any other classes where you do a lot of writing, are all used to reviewing student work. Moreover, any teacher or tutor that has been working with you for some time, knows you very well and can vet the essay to make sure it "sounds like you." If your teacher or tutor has some experience with what college essays are supposed to be like, ask them to be your editor. If not, then ask whether they have time to proofread your final draft. Guidance or College Counselor at Your School The best thing about asking your counselor to edit your work is that this is their job. This means that they have a very good sense of what colleges are looking for in an application essay. At the same time, school counselors tend to have relationships with admissions officers in many colleges, which again gives them insight into what works and which college is focused on what aspect of the application. Unfortunately, in many schools the guidance counselor tends to be way overextended. If your ratio is 300 students to 1 college counselor, you're unlikely to get that person's undivided attention and focus. It is still useful to ask them for general advice about your potential topics, but don't expect them to be able to stay with your essay from first draft to final version. Friends, Siblings, or Classmates Although they most likely don't have much experience with what colleges are hoping to see, your peers are excellent sources for checking that your essay is you . Friends and siblings are perfect for the read-aloud edit. Read your essay to them so they can listen for words and phrases that are stilted, pompous, or phrases that just don't sound like you. You can even trade essays and give helpful advice on each other's work. If your editor hasn't worked with college admissions essays very much, no worries! Any astute and attentive reader can still greatly help with your process. But, as in all things, beginners do better with some preparation. First, your editor should read our advice about how to write a college essay introduction , how to spot and fix a bad college essay , and get a sense of what other students have written by going through some admissions essays that worked . Then, as they read your essay, they can work through the following series of questions that will help them to guide you. Introduction Questions Is the first sentence a killer opening line? Why or why not? Does the introduction hook the reader? Does it have a colorful, detailed, and interesting narrative? Or does it propose a compelling or surprising idea? Can you feel the author's voice in the introduction, or is the tone dry, dull, or overly formal? Show the places where the voice comes through. Essay Body Questions Does the essay have a through-line? Is it built around a central argument, thought, idea, or focus? Can you put this idea into your own words? How is the essay organized? By logical progression? Chronologically? Do you feel order when you read it, or are there moments where you are confused or lose the thread of the essay? Does the essay have both narratives about the author's life and explanations and insight into what these stories reveal about the author's character, personality, goals, or dreams? If not, which is missing? Does the essay flow? Are there smooth transitions/clever links between paragraphs? Between the narrative and moments of insight? Reader Response Questions Does the writer's personality come through? Do we know what the speaker cares about? Do we get a sense of "who he or she is"? Where did you feel most connected to the essay? Which parts of the essay gave you a "you are there" sensation by invoking your senses? What moments could you picture in your head well? Where are the details and examples vague and not specific enough? Did you get an "a-ha!" feeling anywhere in the essay? Is there a moment of insight that connected all the dots for you? Is there a good reveal or "twist" anywhere in the essay? What are the strengths of this essay? What needs the most improvement? Should You Pay Money for Essay Editing? One alternative to asking someone you know to help you with your college essay is the paid editor route. There are two different ways to pay for essay help: a private essay coach or a less personal editing service , like the many proliferating on the internet. My advice is to think of these options as a last resort rather than your go-to first choice. I'll first go through the reasons why. Then, if you do decide to go with a paid editor, I'll help you decide between a coach and a service. When to Consider a Paid Editor In general, I think hiring someone to work on your essay makes a lot of sense if none of the people I discussed above are a possibility for you. If you can't ask your parents. For example, if your parents aren't good writers, or if English isn't their first language. Or if you think getting your parents to help is going create unnecessary extra conflict in your relationship with them (applying to college is stressful as it is!) If you can't ask your teacher or tutor. Maybe you don't have a trusted teacher or tutor that has time to look over your essay with focus. Or, for instance, your favorite humanities teacher has very limited experience with college essays and so won't know what admissions officers want to see. If you can't ask your guidance counselor. This could be because your guidance counselor is way overwhelmed with other students. If you can't share your essay with those who know you. It might be that your essay is on a very personal topic that you're unwilling to share with parents, teachers, or peers. Just make sure it doesn't fall into one of the bad-idea topics in our article on bad college essays . If the cost isn't a consideration. Many of these services are quite expensive, and private coaches even more so. If you have finite resources, I'd say that hiring an SAT or ACT tutor (whether it's PrepScholar or someone else) is better way to spend your money . This is because there's no guarantee that a slightly better essay will sufficiently elevate the rest of your application, but a significantly higher SAT score will definitely raise your applicant profile much more. Should You Hire an Essay Coach? On the plus side, essay coaches have read dozens or even hundreds of college essays, so they have experience with the format. Also, because you'll be working closely with a specific person, it's more personal than sending your essay to a service, which will know even less about you. But, on the minus side, you'll still be bouncing ideas off of someone who doesn't know that much about you . In general, if you can adequately get the help from someone you know, there is no advantage to paying someone to help you. If you do decide to hire a coach, ask your school counselor, or older students that have used the service for recommendations. If you can't afford the coach's fees, ask whether they can work on a sliding scale —many do. And finally, beware those who guarantee admission to your school of choice—essay coaches don't have any special magic that can back up those promises. Should You Send Your Essay to a Service? On the plus side, essay editing services provide a similar product to essay coaches, and they cost significantly less . If you have some assurance that you'll be working with a good editor, the lack of face-to-face interaction won't prevent great results. On the minus side, however, it can be difficult to gauge the quality of the service before working with them . If they are churning through many application essays without getting to know the students they are helping, you could end up with an over-edited essay that sounds just like everyone else's. In the worst case scenario, an unscrupulous service could send you back a plagiarized essay. Getting recommendations from friends or a school counselor for reputable services is key to avoiding heavy-handed editing that writes essays for you or does too much to change your essay. Including a badly-edited essay like this in your application could cause problems if there are inconsistencies. For example, in interviews it might be clear you didn't write the essay, or the skill of the essay might not be reflected in your schoolwork and test scores. Should You Buy an Essay Written by Someone Else? Let me elaborate. There are super sketchy places on the internet where you can simply buy a pre-written essay. Don't do this! For one thing, you'll be lying on an official, signed document. All college applications make you sign a statement saying something like this: I certify that all information submitted in the admission process—including the application, the personal essay, any supplements, and any other supporting materials—is my own work, factually true, and honestly presented... I understand that I may be subject to a range of possible disciplinary actions, including admission revocation, expulsion, or revocation of course credit, grades, and degree, should the information I have certified be false. (From the Common Application ) For another thing, if your academic record doesn't match the essay's quality, the admissions officer will start thinking your whole application is riddled with lies. Admission officers have full access to your writing portion of the SAT or ACT so that they can compare work that was done in proctored conditions with that done at home. They can tell if these were written by different people. Not only that, but there are now a number of search engines that faculty and admission officers can use to see if an essay contains strings of words that have appeared in other essays—you have no guarantee that the essay you bought wasn't also bought by 50 other students. You should get college essay help with both editing and proofreading A good editor will ask questions about your idea, logic, and structure, and will point out places where clarity is needed A good editor will absolutely not answer these questions, give you their own ideas, or write the essay or parts of the essay for you A good proofreader will find typos and check your formatting All of them agree that getting light editing and proofreading is necessary Parents, teachers, guidance or college counselor, and peers or siblings If you can't ask any of those, you can pay for college essay help, but watch out for services or coaches who over-edit you work Don't buy a pre-written essay!
