‘You Go, Girl,’ as Translated Into Hindi

movie review of chak de india

By Andy Webster

  • Aug. 11, 2007

The making-of-a-team sports movie is a timeworn genre, and yet “Chak De! India” (“Go, India!”) finds new variations. Though the game here is field hockey, those fondly recalling the United States soccer team’s first-place finish in the 1991 Women’s World Cup will find a lot to like.

Of course, there are conventions. Kabir Khan (the assured Bollywood veteran Shahrukh Khan) is a former player for India’s national field hockey team who missed a fateful play against Pakistan, costing a championship and making him a pariah. Seven years later, he is hired to coach the nation’s women’s hockey team, giving him one more shot at a title.

The players, from states all over India, are a fractious lot, including a tomboy (Chitrashi Rawat) whose father fears she will never marry; a forward (Sagarika Ghatge) whose boyfriend, a cricket superstar, wants her to quit the team and live in his shadow; a newlywed goalie (Vidya Malavade) whose in-laws expect her to stay at home; and a haughty, seasoned player (Shilpa Shukla) who needles the coach.

When leering boys at a McDonald’s harass them, a girls-against-boys melee erupts, but the coach doesn’t interfere, knowing the team will prevail — and find its spirit. From there, it’s on to the women’s hockey championships in Melbourne, Australia.

The director, Shimit Amin, strikes a buoyant, propulsive tone, replacing the customary Bollywood production numbers with exhilarating musical montages of team practice. For his part, Mr. Khan, to his credit, lets his co-stars’ youthful charisma carry the movie. He also laudably portrays a man who vigorously and unabashedly advocates the advancement of women.

In fact, the film’s greatest merit is its commentary on sexism in India. As it should, “Chak De! India” gives the women, in the closing credits, the last word.

Positive Messages

There's plenty here about overcoming racism and sexism. There's also a poke at the media spin and what impact it can have, here turning a heroic sports figure into a traitor in his country's eyes. The coach says, "it's not strength but spirit that makes a team." Unfortunately he tries to unify and bring out the spirit in his team by letting them beat up some sexist boys in a food court.

Positive Role Models

In trying to mold his team the coach tows a hard line but gets the best out of his players. The girl athletes from states all around India start out divided, calling each other racist names like "Junglees" for the girls from the jungle and "Chow Mein" for girls with more Chinese features. They come along way as a team, especially considering the sexism they're up against. Even the head of the field hockey club barely wants to give them a chance, saying Indian women are better suited to cook and clean.

Violence & Scariness

The girl athletes beat up sexist boys at a food court -- the soundtrack-heavy fight is meant to be comical but boys are ganged up on and hit with sticks and other objects. Girls get some bloody injuries in a few matches and one girl is instructed to rough up an aggressive team with lots of tripping and running them down. The coach raises his hand to one of his players like he's ready to strike her, then doesn't. Objects are burned in protest after a lost game.

Sex, Romance & Nudity

Sexist banter and cat-calls, especially toward the Indian women who look more Chinese; they're asked, "How much for those melons?" One girl athlete makes a clumsy seduction attempt toward her coach that goes nowhere. One player is seen in bed with her boyfriend but they mostly talk onscreen.

Chak de India

What's the story.

Seven years after field hockey star Kabir Kahn (Bollywood heartthrob staple Shah Rukh Khan) is deemed a traitor for his big loss against Pakistan he's given another chance to show his true colors. He's asked to coach the India women's national field hockey team. He has three months to mold players from states all around India into a team ready for the world cup in Australia -- and he's got his work cut out for him. The girls are divided by prejudice and haughtiness and lack any kind of camaraderie. And after Kahn works hard to bring the girls together, the team's funding is cut off. The sexist head of the field hockey club is giving the money to the men's team instead. In a last-ditch effort to get the girls to Australia, Coach Kahn has them play against the men's team to decide their fate.

Is It Any Good?

Girls especially will dig into this decent underdog tale and root for the players facing sexism, family expectations, and other obstacles. It'll remind you of A League of Their Own in many ways. Don't worry if you don't know much about field hockey. It's pretty easy to follow (and the training montages are lengthy enough you can probably put together your own neighborhood team by film's end). Despite the cultural divide, guaranteed you'll be cheering "Chak de India!" (meaning "go for it, India") through the exciting conclusion.

It can be hard to get kids to sit through a more typical Bollywood movie. They're very long, usually subtitled, lean toward the melodramatic, and are full of song and dance numbers in a musical style American kids don't hear on the radio. CHAK DE! INDIA is subtitled and a little long, yes, but there are no dance numbers -- the limited soundtrack is more peppy and modern -- and most of the drama takes place on the field.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about their favorite underdog sports movies and how Chak De! India compares.

What do these Indian girls overcome that other athletes don't have to?

In the beginning of the movie how does the media turn Coach Kabir Kahn from someone who lost a game for his country into someone who turned traitor? Do we experience media spin to the same extent in the U.S.?

Review: Chak De India

Shah rukh khan is outstanding – it’s a performance that is comparable to and at points even more internalised than the one in swades, writes khalid mohamed..

Chak De! India Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Chitrashi Rawat Direction: Shimit Amin Rating: ***1/2

HT Image

Milk shake, rattle and roll. Sporty girls are bashing up a bunch of eve-teasers in a fast-food restaurant. The hockey coach doesn’t intervene, whips on his dark glasses and smiles lightly. His girls have scored a hit.

Cheers for Chak De! India , which may be predictable but compels you to root for a team of losers whom only an earth-angel can save from disastrous defeat. Written by Jaideep Saini and directed by Shimit Amin, this inspirational effort echoes Hollywood’s Hardball, The Replacements , and Escape to Victory whose influence has already been evidenced in Lagaan .

But what the hell? If a story is retold with varying riffs, a sliver of imagination and sufficient skill, just chill.

Over to Kabir Khan (Shah Rukh Khan), the disgraced captain of the Indian hockey team, who’s out to redeem himself after seven years of vanvas. He lands the assignment, just by a whisker, of coaching the raggedy Indian women’s hockey team. So far, so hopeful.

The 16 girls from various states are a mess – either too raw or too cocksure. Begins the training which does get far too protracted, what with the girls snarling, whining and ready to tear one’s eyes out. Slowly but surely, Khan makes them understand their strengths and above all, their Indianness which alone can get them to the winning goal.

Obstinately perhaps, the focus remains on Kabir as the coach. There’s no backstory, no glimpses into his heart and mind. Only his mother pops up at the outset and at the end, full stop. In addition, the introduction of the girls – through hideously antiquated wipes – doesn’t make you connect to them, except with the ones who’re either too nice or too much spice. And pray, why linger unduly over the kabhi-bedroom-kabhi-ignore routine of one of the girls with a creepy cricketer?

Chalo Australia, then. Now, you’re hooked as the team takes on the Goliaths, thanks to the coach’s psychological jugglery. The sequences showing Kabir Khan losing his cool, his request to two competitive players to see the larger picture and the finale’s clarion call, are marvellously done, often making your eyes moist. And then, you’re at the edge of the seat for the decisive showdown intricately crafted by sports action director Rob Miller.

Auspiciously, the director fits in strong comments on national unity, gender equality, secularism and team spirit.

Shah Rukh Khan is outstanding – it’s a performance that is comparable and at points even more internalised than the one in Swades . He carries the proverbial burden of the project on his shoulders. Intense and steel-like, he stays in character throughout, shunning any traces of glamour.

Of the girls, the little stick of dynamite Chitrashi Rawat, the independent-minded Sagarika Ghatge, the team’s zip-unzip vamp Shilpa Shukla and the anger-spewing Tania Abrol are marvellous discoveries.

Yup, so go for it!

Chak de india.

A sports movie about a disgraced coach who leads an Indian girls' field hockey team toward a World Cup, this is new wave Bollywood at its best.

“Chak De! India” is new wave Bollywood at its best, a Hindi-language film from a Mumbai studio that shows the influence of American and foreign films.

It has none of what film critic Peter Rainer has called the “Busby Beserkley” dance numbers, and there isn’t any boy-girl romance. Rather, “India” is a sports movie — something of a cross between “Bend It Like Beckham” and “A League of Their Own” — about a disgraced coach (Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan) who leads an Indian girls’ field hockey team toward a World Cup.

Former editor Shimit Amin, making his second film as a director, spent years working on American indie films. This shows in his determination to blend a character-driven story with Bollywood emotions.

The opening-night film of the recently concluded Indian Splendor film festival in Los Angeles, “India” already has opened in India and North America. Unfortunately, the film has been steered into the usual Indian-American cinemas here rather than braving a few mainstream theaters where it can reach out to a crossover audience. The film could certainly engage non-Indian viewers if its marketing played to the feminist sports angles; it certainly has lots to say about racism and misogyny in Indian society.

In the final moments of an India-Pakistan hockey game, Kabir (Khan), the Indian team captain, elects to take a penalty shot. When the ball barely skips over the top of the net, resulting in India’s loss, rumors immediately spread that Kabir, a Muslim, was “playing for Pakistan.” Despite absolutely no evidence, the media and fans take up that chant, and soon he and his mother must abandon the family house.

Seven years later, Kabir re-emerges to ask for a job as coach of an Indian girls’ hockey team. No other coach will touch the assignment. The girls recruited are top players from their individual states, but they come with different languages, ethnicities and prejudices, making it nearly impossible to mold them into an Indian team.

A broad-shouldered, rough-talking Punjabi girl can barely tolerate a tiny village tomboy who can dribble like crazy. Her Punjabi language is understood by the Hindi speakers but not by the teammate who speaks Telugu. The two girls from Mizoram and Manipur in the northeast, near Tibet, suffer endless slights because of their Asian looks.

A girl engaged to an egotistical cricket player is determined to score all the goals to prove she is a sports hero, too. Consequently, she never passes the ball to the other forward. A devious though seasoned Maharashtran girl openly rebels against the coach. First she tries to get him fired, then to seduce him.

All of these dramas take place over grueling practice sessions and hard-fought matches on the road to the World Cup in Australia. The screenplay by Jaideep Sahni carefully delineates the various rivalries and animosities, sparing the poor coach none of the agony of putting out the constant brush fires among battling teammates.

This film is from a new studio established by Yash Chopra, a leading figure in Bollywood production for 40 years, so technical credits are first rate with excellent cinematography, quicksilver editing, musical montages of practice and a fine use of locations. “India” is definitely Bollywood, ashamed of neither sentimentality nor predictability. Yet its sharp-eyed view of Indian society makes for a world of difference from old-style, sugar-coated Bollywood films.

Chak De! India

Critics Review

One of srk's best.

Great performances by a bunch of unknowns, a gritty pace and a marvellous restraint make Chakde India an unbridled ode to patriotism without any hysterical chest-beating. And yes, for all you SRK fans and bashers, this time the verdict gotta be unanimous: Chakde Shah Rukh! Can you better this? (more)

Source: Nikhat Kazmi, Times Of India

This is what teamwork is all about.

A fairy-tale told with utmost conviction, realism and logic. Shah Rukh Khan, the star, is a delight to watch. As a performer here, he is even better. With a more apt score it would have been quite a match and an award-winning team! (more)

A winner all the way!

Put your hands together for director Shimit Amin's Chak De India. It's an immensely satisfying movie experience. It's got a predictable premise and you know exactly which way the story's going to go, but sometimes, when the characters win over your heart and you're rooting for them to win, that's all that really matters. Turns out to be a riveting film

On top of it, 'Chak De India' has no love angle even though it has Shah Rukh Khan playing the leading man alongside 16 new girls. Despite so many odds, 'Chak De India' turns out to be a riveting film. Reason - excellent writing (by Jaideep Sahni), well etched-out characters, brilliant performances (by Shah Rukh, Shilpa Shukla, Sagarika Ghatge and Chitrashi Rawat) and, last but not the least, superb direction by Shimit Amin. This is one film that celebrates women power

As for the girls, their camaraderie and bickering is well projected and every girl stands out in her role (pun intended), whether its centre-back, right outer, or centre-forward!,As for the women, I suggest they go in groups and bring the house down. This is one film that celebrates women power!!! (more)

SRK leads hockeybabes to glory

This is also a return to glory for Shah Rukh Khan, the superstar doing excellently as he tackles a cast with (almost) entirely deplorable acting chops and makes you believe.Khan, of course, is King. This is a bravura performance, a gritty drive by an actor who clearly has sport in his blood. The fit of Shah Rukh as a hockey COACH -- inspiring, canny, frustrated, helpless and profoundly hopeful -- is so naturally perfect that it's a wonder he hasn't done a sports film before. It's been a while since we've seen him visibly relish a role like this, and while he has to mouth some clunky dialogue, Khan is simply super. (more)

movie review of chak de india

Chak De India Movie Review

While we continue to go into ecstasy over cricket we hardly seem to realize that hockey is the true-blue Indian game. Chak De India aims at giving the dying game the respect it deserves.

As far as the success of the movie is concerned a lot is at stake. Sport is not a very successful genre in Bollywood, most sport based movies have failed miserably at the box office. The only exception being Aamir Khan’s oscar nominated Lagaan. Also the last two Yash Raj Films, Ta Ra Rum Pum and Jhoom Barabar Jhoom disapponted.

So with a lot at stake the Yashraj – SRK combo deliver and deliver big time.

Chak De India directed by Shimit Amin (Ab Tak Chapan) and produced by Aditya Chopra (Yash Raj Films) is about an ex Indian Hockey team captain?s return as the Coach to the Indian Women?s National Hockey team and his fight in making team India a strong and indomitable team.

Kabir Khan (Shah Rukh Khan) is a man who overcomes the problems in life without being skeptical and disturbed. He isn?t an outsider to the game of hockey as he had once led the Indian Hockey team and unfortunately experienced failure and disgrace. He approaches to be the coach of a rag-tag bunch of girls as a challenge to overcome his failure and the obstacles that had once stopped him from taking India to the top league in the field of Hockey.

Kabir?s challenge lied in reshaping a team which in pursuing their personal goals had forgotten what it is like to play as a team. His challenge lied not in training or honing the skills of the team but rather to bring them together as a team and instill the virtue of belief. A belief in realizing that if you want, you can do it! His mantra was ?Jo nahin ho sakta hai, wahi to karna hai.. ” Will he succeed in making his team by overcoming their diverse backgrounds and striking away all the bitterness, by learning to use everything that life hurls on them as a secret weapon?

Director Shimit Amin has taken an interesting leap in style, substance, conceit and stardom. From Nana Patekar an encounter specialist in “Ab Tak Chhappan” to Shah Rukh playing a coach who transforms a team of rag-tag girls into champions.

With a strong screenplay, Shimit’s direction is first rate. He has ensured there isnt even a single dull moment. Every scene makes a impact. Also the feel of the movie is so real that it makes you cheer and pray for the team to win. The background music is brilliant so is the cinematography.

Performances – Shahrukh Khan is the heart and soul of Chak De India. He has just delivered arguably his best performances in his career. It fills your heart with happiness to see the actor in Shahrukh in full form. He portrays the role of Hockey coach with a lot of dignity, intensity and charm. Undoubtedly the best performance of the year.

The team of girls are exceptionally good. Characters of Preethi and Komal stand out.

Watch out for..

  • The introduction scene of the girls to the coach. Brilliant.
  • The lunch at McDonald’s scene.
  • SRK! His acting, expressions, screen presence, dialogue delivery. Just about everything!
  • The climax is so emotional that it leaves you with a tear in your eye

Overall, this is a must watch for every Indian. The performances, the screenplay, the direction are just perfect. You cant ask or expect more. Is there a negative? Yup, the intermission.. It makes you restless!! At the box office, its undoubtedly going to create history.

Wonderful! I was hoping this got a good review because I really wanted to see it and was hoping for this to be good. Finally a great hindi movie for 2007.

[…] Perfect Rating by Indicine […]

This was amazing I was thinking that all the reviews will be great

Just back from the cinema, and rest assured, this is one film the Yashraj should really be proud of. Splendid to see a screenplay as fluid as this, awesome to see a narrative as honest to the subject as this and amazing to see it delivered in such an entertaining format. This is what movies are all about… stories well told.

The soundtrack doubles the life of the proceedings (the lyrics of the title Sukhvinder track are probably the best ever I have heard in a patrio-almost-jingo-istic), SRK IS Kabir Khan (so believable, so comfortable just being the character and yet managing to add some fantastic nuances and making it his own the way only he can. The guy’s talent is beyond suspect.) and the girls are perfectly cast. The hockey is hooking, the politics within the team and outside the team amongst the authorities is adroitly penned.

Of the girls, its Shilpa Shukla’s Bindia Naik who goes on to being a rebel who has no qualms in bullying, breaking team-spirit and even propositioning her coach to rising upto the occasion as finally required (the subtle ego-pumping by the coach which turns things out is a very uncliched denouement to the clash and was very welcome!). The dame’s got some balls and wouldn’t budge despite being shown the way out from SRK quite a lot of times. Really, as the nemesis of her own team, the character’s very effective, and I was mighty impressed with the girl, just like I was 3 years back with her amazing performance in 2003’s Khamosh paani.

Then there’s Chitrashi Rawat as the Bihari Komal… awesome comedy right from the 1st time when you almost mistake her for a young boy to everytime she opens her mouth to spit out chaste Bihari. Her she-doesn’t-pass-the-ball-then-why-should-I duel with Preeti in the team is a fantastically fleshed out one and makes every game right upto its climax a delight.

There’s something very fantastic about Vidya Malwade’s sex appeal who totally bowled me over in Inteha a few years back. Again, she looks so content playing the girl-of-few-words, sensible, non-confrontational captain… you really vouch for her as the goalie and her team!

All the other girls were top class too. I felt along with all of them but the triumvirate of the above really stand out.

The only glitch probably is the SRK’s redemption angle where the drama’s a little too self-conscious and manipulative in a filmy way. But thankfully, its limited to this part of the story and if nothing else will sorta make it more accessible to a wider section of audience. Otherwise the team-coach and intra-team camaraderie is very mature, non-melodramatic and real.

And what was with the dead-beat commentary by the man who played Rani’s dad in Black in World Championship. Its almost conspcious by its boring presence.

And the background stories of almost every girl are either heavily clipped or repetitive, but maybe that was meant to show that no matter whatever the population demographic, gender bias in India cuts through all classes. Which is pretty saddening.

Finally, what matters is when you come out of the cinema, you feel smug of watching something very satisfying. The film is very life-reaffirming, very vital. A genuine sports film very much in the league of Lagaan (I kinda detest Iqbal for its manipulative and clammy tone and it has nowhere as many and as colourful characters as Chak De).

I knew zilch about hockey as a game when I went into the cinema, and came really entertained and of course, re-enforced with age-old-but-ever-so-essential-values of patriotism and team spirit. It was about time we had movies on sports other than cricket. 3 cheers for everyone involved in this movie… most of all the writer (Jaideep Sahni (this guy is doling out one cherishable film after other this year…1st Khosla Ka Ghosla, now Chak De… am all the more positive now that he’s done a brilliant job in Aaja Nachle) and the director Shimit Amin.

In all, its amazing to watch such warm, believable, full of life cinema in cynical times like these! Go watch it people!

[…] is about that only) but when one of my very good friend Ashok (he also writes movie reviews – his review) sent me message saying, the movie is 5 on 5. I was like shocked. I called him and he told me, the […]

considered as the person responsible for loosing the world cup finals. After seven years of loosing world cup finals Shahrukh has got an opportunity to

train Indian womens team for world cup. After seven years of loosing world cup finals

'Mr. & Mrs. Mahi' movie review: A confused tale of marriage, cricket and failed dreams

YouTube screengrab from the trailer of 'Mr. & Mrs. Mahi'

For the unversed, this is not a biopic of Mahendra Singh Dhoni or a cricket allegory of the ex-skipper’s marital life. Another entry in the incoming Letterboxd list “Films where Janhvi Kapoor’s husband is an insecure manipulator”,  Mr. & Mrs. Mahi  is  Bawaal  (2023) if it were a sports drama. It is an Ayushmann Khurrana film with a bruised male ego but no venereal diseases. It also has elements of a diabolical version of  Chak De! India  (2007), where coach Kabir Khan (Shah Rukh Khan) is empowering the women’s team only for personal fame and glory. What if all he was seeking was a garlanded welcome into the  muhalla  he was kicked out of for being a “traitor”. What if the famous  sattar  (70) minute speech was actually to garner likes on the gram.

Mahendra Aggarwal (Rajkummar Rao) is a failed cricketer who has been forced to join his dismissive father’s (Kumud Mishra) sports-equipment business. Sitting at the shop, he reads comics when he is not goofing up the orders. He is also envious of his younger brother Sikandar (Arjit Taneja), a soap-opera star. Mahendra’s marriage is set up with Mahima (Janhvi Kapoor), a doctor. The two don’t have much in common but on their first night, they discover a shared passion for a different kind of physical activity. The couple muffle their screams and jump in excitement as on TV, a player hits a six.

After realising that he has lost the youthful agility of a sportsperson and seeing Mahima hit perfect straight drives, Mahendra decides to coach her. He manipulates her into believing that her real passion lies in cricket and medicine is something she did on the behest of her father. It’s a sweet idea. A patriarch rubbing off his own parental trauma in the guise of women empowerment. But director Sharan Sharma and writer Nikhil Mehrotra choose to swim on the surface. A lot of cinematic liberty is also taken. Mahima, who was a gully cricket star as a child, is somehow trained in six months to play for state trials by a man who has been out of the game for five years. No amount of training montages could be convincing enough.

Discussions on suspension of disbeliefs aside,  Mr. & Mrs. Mahi  is too straightforward, too plain. If the film takes itself as a romantic sports-drama, the chemistry between the leads is not sparkling enough. Their love story is more a stepping stone in the direction of… I am not sure what. Rajkummar Rao laps up the role of a loser, miffed at his own mediocrity. He understands the assignment, although the film doesn’t let him explore the complex psychology the character seems to be offering. Janhvi, on the other hand, gets stuck in the stereotype of the gullible, homely, small-town girl. The makers also don’t delve deep into her needs and desires. She remains a stock character, a mere vessel to showcase Mahendra’s obsession with proving himself. Kumud Mishra is effective as the disappointed father.

Mr. & Mrs. Mahi , at most, is a shake-up to the tired genre of sports films in Hindi cinema. It is not exactly a patriotic story or a feminist tale. What it’s trying to tell is that fame is fickle but passion stays. That real joy comes from the act of doing something and not being applauded for it. That while telling a story of an insecure, devious man, makers still can’t afford to punish him too much. That women still need to be told by men to find their calling. That mothers know everything. That there is far too much to tell but nothing to convey.

Directed by: Sharan Sharma

Cast: Rajkummar Rao, Janhvi Kapoor, Kumud Mishra, Rajesh Sharma, Zarina Wahab, Arjit Taneja

Rating: 2/5 stars

Director Anurag Kashyap Reveals Why He Cannot Work With Shah Rukh Khan?

By Aditi Rathi

Shah Rukh Khan is one of Bollywood’s most iconic stars, with a fan base that extends far beyond India, reaching across the globe. Known for delivering numerous blockbusters, even his lesser-known films receive admiration from his fans. Despite collaborating with many renowned directors throughout his career, he has never worked with Anurag Kashyap. Recently, Kashyap explained why a collaboration with SRK is not feasible for him.

Despite not working together, Anurag Kashyap admires Shah Rukh Khan. The two are often seen interacting in social gatherings.

‘It is impossible’: Anurag Kashyap on making a film with SRK

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Shah Rukh Khan (@iamsrk)

In a recent interview with Humans of Cinema , Anurag Kashyap revealed that it is impossible for him to work with SRK. He said, “My favorite Shah Rukh Khan film is Chak De India. Also Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa. In his beginning stage, SRK worked with everybody. But it is impossible to make a film with Shah Rukh Khan now.”

Further mentioning the reason behind his statement, he said, “I aspired it once and I like him a lot, but I am very scared of fans now. In this day and age of social media, I am terrified by the fanbases big stars have. Actors get typecast because of fans, and the fans want the same things from them again and again. If that doesn’t happen fans reject it, so even actors get apprehensive about trying new things.”

The filmmaker added, “Hence I am scared because I will make the film I want to and not just cater to the fans. The repercussions or consequences of what happens then can cost you a lot. So it’s not in my capacity to cater to SRK’s aura or enigma. If his film Fan would have worked, I could have said that I too have the courage to work with him.”

On the work front, Shah Rukh Khan recently delivered three films in 2023. While Pathaan and Jawan were blockbusters, Dunki also did well at the box office. More details on his upcoming movies are awaited.
