Big City Life: Advantages and Disadvantages Essay

Introduction, disadvantages.

Historically, big cities were always centers of commerce and economic growth, offering greater security and job opportunities. To this day, leaving the desperation of the countryside for the success of a huge metropolis is a popular trope in culture and media. Although it is common to romanticize the lifestyle of big city dwellers, living in a large urban area comes at a high cost. Metropolitan residents do indeed enjoy a tremendous amount of career and quality of life advantages; however, it is not a secret that living in big cities is often associated with a lack of meaningful interpersonal interactions.

On the one hand, big city life offers excellent opportunities for economic growth. According to Loschiavo (2021), “urban concentration enhances productivity, which, in turn, spurs national economic growth” (p. 5). Due to their sheer massiveness, big metropolitan areas provide their inhabitants with a greater number of open vacancies and increased competitive salaries. In addition, dwellers of such cities benefit from easy access to various quality-of-life services, such as different specialty stores, pharmacies, hospitals, restaurants, and entertainment options. Massive city residents enjoy the best medical service and numerous means of mass transportation.

On the other hand, big city dwellers suffer from a lack of meaningful interpersonal relationships. Loschiavo (2021) claims that “big-city dwellers are exposed to unceasing external contacts with numbers of persons that are nevertheless impersonal and transitory” (p. 10). According to his research, people in larger cities tend to create relationships to meet their needs rather than form meaningful mutual connections. Moreover, a competitive environment in areas of large economic growth contributes to the dissolution of cooperation and thus leads to increased residents’ unhappiness.

In conclusion, life in a big city has advantages and disadvantages. Large urban areas offer better job opportunities and easy access to the best possible medicine, transport, and leisure. However, the competitive and transitory nature of metropolises contributes to the decadence of cooperation and interpersonal relationships. Although big cities offer numerous career-related opportunities, those aspiring to move there must be prepared for lack of satisfaction in their personal life.

Endless Opportunities

One of the most compelling aspects of city life is the abundance of opportunities. Big cities are usually economic powerhouses, hosting a myriad of industries, businesses, and organizations. This diversity in the economic landscape leads to a broad spectrum of job opportunities. The presence of multinational companies and startups in cities provides ample career options for individuals with different skills and qualifications.

The high cost of living, including housing, transportation, and food, can be prohibitive for many. Additionally, cities often grapple with issues like pollution, traffic congestion, and crime.

Pollution and Overcrowding

Big cities are notorious for their high pollution levels. The concentration of industries and vehicles leads to air and noise pollution, adversely affecting the health of residents. Overcrowding is another significant issue, with cities struggling to provide adequate housing and infrastructure for their ever-growing populations.

The Paradox of Loneliness

Despite the bustling crowds, city life can often be isolating. The intense competition and focus on individual success can lead to a sense of alienation. The paradox of feeling lonely in a crowd is a common phenomenon experienced by many city dwellers.

Essay on Life in a Big City 500 Words in English

Below we have provided Life in a Big City Essay in English, suitable for class 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 & 8.

There is a proverb, “God made the country and man made the town.” The proverb points out the contrast between life in the city and life in the village. Life in a village is simple and familiar with nature. Life in the city is fast and artificial. While India is primarily a land of villages, the country also has many towns or cities. Some of the cities are very big, such as Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata. They have several million inhabitants. Living in a major city has both benefits and inconvenience.

Life in a big city is a mixture of opposites. At one hand the buildings are very tall, and on the other hand, some slums are filthy. In big cities, wealth and poverty live side by side. People in cities die both due to starvation and overeating. There are elegant buildings amid smoky factories. We may claim that life in a big city is a mixture of pleasures and sorrows. There are all the comforts of life in a big city, but it is also full of bad thighs.

Advantages of Living in a Big City

The houses in big cities are tall. They have many storeys. The towers are multi-storied with lifts. It offers excellent educational facilities. There are elementary schools and high schools, technical colleges, engineering colleges and medical colleges. There are Universities in big cities too.

A big city has many markets. There are a large number of stores in each sector. The stores are well stocked. A fabric market has hundreds of fabric shops where the cloth of all kinds are available. In a big city, if a man has money, he can get everything he wants. The shops look very enticing due to the great lights. The roads are wide and driven by metal.

Transportation modes are simple, comfortable and fast. Rickshaws, busses, taxis and cars are within easy reach. The buses take you from one end of the town to the other on payment of a small fare. One can hire a taxi when he/she is in a rush. There are also other services within a major city. We can get timely medical support. Some hospitals have new medications and facilities. There are a good number of private doctors, too.

There are several other benefits of living in the city. There one finds chances for interacting with people from every nook and corner of the world as well as from other countries. One encounters people who have different ways of living, different ideas and different ways of thought. A person’s mind gets broadened in this way and perceptions are expanded.

Disadvantages of Living in a Big City

Big cities do have some drawbacks too. One cannot enjoy nature’s beauties in the city, just as one can do in villages. Everything in the cities is artificial. Man lives isolated from nature. As in a village, one cannot listen to the charms of birds and flowers, and cannot witness the beauty of sunrise and sunset.

Life in a big city is highly unhealthy. Black clouds always cover the sky. There is no chance for the people to breathe free, clean air, or enjoy the bright sunshine. Apart from this, food is also adulterated. People do not get pure ghee and milk. The products being sold in the market are unhealthy and unfit for human consumption.

In a big city, one has to face many difficulties. Life is pretty costly. People have to live pompously and with displays. Simple life like the village’s is unlikely. They are overcrowded and very little housing is available for residents. Tariffs are substantial, and the immigrants have much suffering to deal with. There are long distances and much time is spent travelling from one place to another.

City Life Essay

A big city's urban environment is constantly expanding and changing. There are countless options for learning and development in large cities. They offer an opportunity for career and personal development. People tend to be more intellectual and smarter than those who reside in rural towns and villages because of the exposure to urban life. The pace of life in the city is extremely quick, and only people with sharp wits and adaptable personality can thrive there. In contrast to towns and villages, there is a wider potential for personal development. Moreover, children who live in large cities have access to better schools and universities, which provides them with the chance for holistic development.

Living in a big city is interesting and always changing. For those who live in a large city, there are several opportunities to study and develop. These cities offer the opportunity to advance both personally and professionally. Due to the type of exposure they receive, people who live in major cities tend to be smarter than those who do in small towns and villages.

Business and Economic Opportunities

In contrast to villages and small towns, where the possibilities are restricted, big cities provide fantastic employment chances and lucrative commercial opportunities. There are many businesses and sectors operating here that provide excellent employment prospects to persons with various educational backgrounds. Additionally, these cities provide promising commercial opportunities. An important benefit is how well connected these cities are to the rest of the country. It aids in business growth and interacting with customers that reside in various cities.

Educational Opportunities

Primary and secondary schools can be found in large cities and have strong facilities. These schools have highly educated and skilled staff members and administrators. They emphasise the students' overall development and growth. These cities have also been home to a number of prestigious colleges. They provide specialised education and prepare students to pursue their chosen fields of study.

Big cities unquestionably have a plethora of opportunities. In contrast to small towns, where the options are restricted, big cities provide a wide variety of employment and business opportunities. As the industrial sector expands daily, more and more workers are needed to cover a variety of professions. Therefore, individuals with various levels of education and job experience are needed here. Many of the workplaces hire individuals with just rudimentary knowledge of the relevant profession and train them while they work there.

Large cities are also home to a large number of educational institutions and training facilities that prepare people for employment in a variety of fields. A person who is eager to learn and put in the necessary effort will find plenty of opportunities.

Pros of City Life

Access to electricity is the primary benefit of city living. Most residences in cities have electricity, which is helpful for many because it is uncommon for rural places to have access to it.

You have access to better roads and more efficient modes of transportation if you live in a city. Cities also have more convenient retail centres. Compared to a company in a rural setting, a company in a city has a higher chance of expanding and growing.

The city is home to an increasing number of educational institutions. As a result, these residents have higher levels of educational attainment than rural residents.

In the city, access to healthcare is very easy. Because the majority of the main hospitals and top doctors are located in the area, you can receive better healthcare there.

Access to entertainment is another benefit of living in a city apartment. The city is home to a wide variety of attractions, including museums, theatres and parks.

Cons of City Life

The cost of living is higher in the city than it is in the village. In comparison to rural areas, the cost of food, housing, water, and power is very expensive in cities.

The crowded streets are another drawback of city living. Traffic in the city is an issue since there are so many automobiles, especially during rush hour when people are travelling to and from work.

The city has extremely high pollution levels. Industrialization leads to environmental pollution, which is brought on by improper waste management.

Sewage systems are just another unfavourable aspect of city life. Many people use the same sewage system, which might become clogged if it is not properly maintained.

One may say that life is chaotic in major cities. Everything is in a state of change. People are cut off from nature and live in a concrete jungle. Although they may have a pleasant existence, their mental tranquillity can be sacrificed in order to obtain this comfort. If you have a reliable income, city living can be wonderful. These days, rural areas are also growing owing to all the government developmental programmes and projects. But living in a city has far more advantages than in a rural region, which is why so many people migrate there.

Living in a Big City, Its Causes and Advantages

Wondering about the advantages of living in a big city as opposed to rural areas? Want to know about the disadvantages of a small town lifestyle? This essay sample is for you—check it out!

Why Is It Better to Live in a Big City: Essay Introduction

Advantages of living in a big city: essay body, living in a big city: conclusion.

There was once a time when people preferred the small town living existence due to its inherent slow-paced lifestyle and laid back, relaxing surroundings. Neighbors knew each other on a first name and last name basis and shared lazy Sunday afternoons at church or town-sponsored fairs and socials. That kind of lifestyle probably still exists in some remote towns of the country.

Or maybe it just exists in those Hollywood movies like Sweet Home, Alabama. The reality of the situation is that the slow-paced lifestyle that once described American living has given way to big city living. Being a person who exists in the 21st century, I am more comfortable with big city living for more reasons than just one.

First of all, big city living offers its residents an exciting lifestyle. Each day is an adventure as the city continuously offers something new to discover. There is always a new place opening up where people are encouraged to be different and try something new. The city offers its inhabitants an opportunity to dive head-on into the world of the future.

City living is best lived in by people whose imagination knows no boundaries and wants to soar above the city lights that give glimmer to an otherwise dark night. I believe that is the reason why most small-town people dream of eventually living in a big city. The surprises that big city living offers is simply too vast to quantify.

For me, big city living adventure began the day I learned to differentiate sounds. Living here is more than an adventure; it is an educational and social learning experience. There is no better place to learn about life than in the city.

Where everyone seems to be living in a glass menagerie, and we can freely observe people and their attitudes in a habitat that they create for themselves. It may not be as open, and nature bound as town living, but that is the beauty of city living. One learns by mingling with their friends and allowing strangers into their lives on a need to know basis.

Education-wise, the city offers an educational system that cannot be equaled in the small towns. All aspects of city living simply scream education. From the advertising billboards on the side of the bus to the hot dog cart vendor, there is always something new to learn. City dwellers have more stories with moral lessons to turn than any school teacher can teach.

Others say that there is a superficiality to city living because of the fast-paced lifestyle led by the people. It seems like nobody really knows anything about their neighbors because they just live in the same building and nothing more.

The truth of the matter is that city dwellers do not need all that time for face to face socialization because city living is designed to actually allow a person to have a social life on a different level. Like I explained earlier, city dwellers have a more adventurous spirit. Such is the adventurous spirit that even the socialization aspect of our lives are dealt with in the same manner.

While small towns would probably rely on Friday night socials or bingo nights, we rely on the internet, text messaging and blogging to stay in touch with people and make friends. These friendships are not superficial at all because city dwellers tend to create an extended family among strangers due to the distance between them and relatives.

I cannot imagine myself moving out of the city because city living has a different kind of energy that keeps a person pumped up and ready for action. In order to live and survive in the city, one must possess quick and abilities. Let me put it this way. City living makes one feel alive. Nothing can beat waking up late in the morning and then rushing out the door to catch the bus in order not to miss the first appointment of the day.

Big city living is the trend of the future. Urbanization has taken over the country as more and more states become reliant on industries for their income. The slow-paced lifestyle of the past is only a hindrance to the future of any community.

The importance of urbanization can be seen in every aspect of small-town living that is now becoming a thing of the past. Even the farmers now rely heavily on technology to keep their farms running more efficiently and productively. Something they learned from following the big city models of running a production output-oriented business.

More importantly, the city if where everything of importance is coming to the fore. Advances in the field of medicine are concentrated within the city because of the experimental advantages. While small-town people are known for their good health, city dwellers are known for the amazing anti-bodies that our bodies contain due to certain unknown toxins that surround us.

We are actually a lot healthier than the small town dwellers because our bodies are constantly fighting off airborne viral infections and thereby developing the necessary anti-bodies. My mother grew up in a small town. She told me that the first time she moved to the city, she was constantly fighting off infections just to be able to make it work. So she was amazed when I was born and was practically never sick since childhood save for the occasional cold.

City living requires a person to learn how to handle himself in various unexpected situations. There is nothing rudimentary about city living because of the way city life is designed to evolve over time constantly.

If you are a person who believes that man was meant to evolve and learn new things constantly, then city living is meant for you. After all, cities seem to have a life of their own. Constantly changing and evolving in looks while the people living within try their best to keep up with the times and interests of those who make the city work.

In the end, city living is probably best described as a way of life for the youth. City living keeps on constantly on their toes and feeling young because everything about life is meant to be enjoyed to the hilt. It is a never-ending adventure that cannot be compared to anything else in the world. It is a state of mind that does not pigeon hole anybody because of his surroundings. City dwelling is all about breaking free and discovering one’s self.

Living in the city is like a travel bug. Once you have been bitten by it, you will never want to stop. It is so enjoyable that nobody seems ever to get tired or grow old. It is more than a state of mind. City living is a state of physical and mental personality. Go ahead, try living in the city. It will change your life.

Essays About City Life: Comparing city life and country life

Urban life and country life are two very different things. If you’ve experienced living in both the country and city, this is the topic for your essay. Discuss similarities and differences between the typical lifestyles in the city and country. Consider also the emotions or mindsets of people who live in each environment.

While cities provide great educational and financial resources, they can also be risky. The smog, fast food, and unhealthy lifestyle practices are the main causes of declining physical health. Some people in the city are also ruthless, rude, and indifferent to others, causing unnecessary stress to those they encounter. Thus, city life can cause issues with a person’s mental and physical health.

The city is full of opportunities, conveniences, and activities for everyone. Entertainment events like sports events and shows are always available. You can find more schools and universities in some cities where your kids can get a better education. Even though the cost of living is more expensive in the city, you can also earn a higher salary. Those are the best benefits of living an urban lifestyle. Consider reading about other benefits or discuss your observations from your experience.

Massachusetts is the home of many great cities, including Boston, Cambridge, and Pittsfield. Depending on where you live, the lifestyle in each MA-based city is unique. It is the essay topic for you if you’ve moved around or have tried living in different areas in Massachusetts. You can also change Massachusetts to a state you’re more familiar with to fit your essay better.

Did you come from the country and move into the city to study or work? Express your emotions and thoughts about how adapting to the city changed you in this essay. You can also compare your typical lifestyle in the country and city here.

This is the perfect essay topic for you if you’re moving from a small town or the country to a big city. Include the survival tips and tricks you learned or realized when you moved to the big city. You can also describe what you expected before moving to the big city and the reality that faced you after the move.

City life can lack the meditative silence that village life provides. It’s full of people who want to take advantage of you, whether at work, on the street, or in your relationships. These experiences, while not universal to urbanites, can affect a person’s mental and physical health. Use this essay writing opportunity to describe how you dealt with bad experiences in the city and the lessons you learned.

For art or fashion-focused students, the city life provides a myriad of colorful opportunities for self-expression. Almost every kind of fashion is acceptable in the city for many people. You’d see people in work attire, loungewear, and even out-of-this-world costumes on the street. If you want to share your idea or opinion about the fashion you’ve seen in cities, this is the essay topic.

Cities are melting pots for different people, cultures, practices, and attitudes. Thus, people who have lived their lives within a city are more open-minded and have universal practices. This topic is a great choice, whether you’re from the country who visited the city or an urbanite who visited the countryside. Discuss the practices strange to you or the people around you when you visit other places and compare them to the normal thing to do in the city.

For this IELTS essay writing topic, you can either agree or disagree with the statement. That being said, it is critical to remember that the paragraph must be at least 250 words.

However, the 40-minute time constraint often stresses students out, and they find it challenging to think of an answer and pick a side quickly. So, here are a few pointers to make 'life in a big city' paragraph writing easier.

  • Read the topic thoroughly.
  • Take the time to pick a stance.
  • Use varied vocabulary.
  • Structure the sentences correctly.
  • Maintain a formal tone and avoid casual phrases.
  • Divide the writing into paragraphs.
  • Check and re-check for any incorrect spellings or grammar.

Question: Many individuals think that living in a large metro city is harder, while others think it is a practical choice. Discuss both perspectives and share your own.

Are metro cities better or not? This has been an ongoing debate between city-dwellers and those living in towns. Rightfully so. Both have their advantages and drawbacks. A small town has better quality air and far less pollution than a city. Small town residents have the luxury of walking out of their homes to absolute tranquillity instead of the noise and bustle of a big city. Moreover, towns are much closer to nature and allow you to take a breather from the chaos of a concrete jungle.

However, with stores on every corner and excellent accessibility to entertainment and the arts, living in a city is much more exciting. Moreover, cities offer job opportunities that would not be available in smaller towns. This is often also the main reason people move to a metropolitan area. Further, with quality institutions, cities allow people access to better quality education. In addition, cities also have spaces that offer greenery and serenity in parks and gated communities. People do not have to go hunting for it in smaller towns. Nevertheless, if one still wishes to enjoy the peace of a town, they can always take one of the many available modes of transportation to the nearest town.

Like everything in this world, living in a city has pros and cons. However, the population in cities alone highlights its many advantages. Therefore, based on my personal analysis and experiences, it is much better to make a good living and enjoy the conveniences of a large metro city than to stay in a small town or hamlet.

IELTS IDIOMS GUIDE

Question: Many people believe living in a major metropolitan city is tough, while others believe it is more convenient. Examine both points of view and then express your own.

Metro cities often house the larger part of the population in any country. They have great opportunities for education and employment, allow people easy access to entertainment and house shops such as departmental stores, clothing retailers, and even exotic marts at almost every corner. There are restaurants serving all types of cuisines, people speaking different languages, and varied modes of transportation that can take you anywhere.

Regardless, cities are overcrowded. It is a fact that the air quality is below par, and quietness is often a luxury. Most people struggle to make ends meet due to the high prices of goods and skyrocketing rent. Besides, the busy life in the metro is often a huge source of stress and anxiety for most. Smaller towns, on the other hand, allow their people to breathe clean air, eat nutritious, uncontaminated food and enjoy a healthy social life. Neighbours often greet each other and come together to celebrate and, in time, become family. Moreover, with the advancement of technology, small towns hold just as much potential in terms of employment. The only struggle is the accessibility to good digital connectivity since they do not have as many signal towers as a metro.

Nevertheless, having considered the pros and cons of both, I realize that the advantages of living in a smaller town far outweigh that of living in a city. In fact, if a bit of disconnection affords one the luxury of living a healthy and quiet life, a small town is the way to go. After all, a city may have accessibility and options, but towns allow you to build a sustainable and holistic life.

Long Essay on Life in a Big City 600 words – Essay Sample 5

Life in a big city looks attractive because of the kind of facilities it offers. Several people leave small towns and villages and move to big cities as they are enticed by the kind of lifestyle it offers. They toil hard in order to achieve the life of their dreams but not everyone is successful in their attempts. Many such people end up in misery and move back to their home towns or lead a wretched life in the big cities.

Endless Opportunities

There is no doubt about the fact that big cities offer endless opportunities. There are numerous job as well as business opportunities in the big cities unlike small towns where the scope is limited. Industrial sector is growing by the day and more and more work force is required to fill different positions.

So, people with different educational qualification and work experience are required here. Similarly, the service sector is also booming at a good pace. These operators mostly have their offices in big cities and thus the scope of work opportunities is higher here. Many of these work places hire people with basic knowledge about the respective field and train them on the job.

Big cities also encompass numerous educational institutes and training centres that educate and train people to work in different sectors. There is no dearth of opportunities for a person who is willing to learn and work hard.

Life of Isolation

There is a lot of competition in the big cities. Everyone wants to earn more, look better and attain a better lifestyle. Most people here are so blinded by power and money that they cannot look beyond it. They slog day and night to earn money and are busy competing with their friends, relatives, neighbours and even their own siblings. In this rush to attain things, they are often left isolated.

They may be able to make good money and have a great lifestyle but they are still not happy as they have no one to share their happiness with. Life in a big city may be equipped with all the modern day facilities but people here often suffer from loneliness and depression. This is quite unlike the life in towns and villages where people value relationships and are there for each other. They visit each other frequently, celebrate festivals and other special occasions together and help each other in the hour of need.

Comfort at the Cost of Peace

Life in big cities can be said to be chaotic. There is hustle and bustle everywhere. People live in a concrete jungle far from nature. Their life may be comfortable however they attain this comfort at the cost of their peace of mind. They may be equipped with better medical facilities however the chances of incurring health problems in big cities are also quite high.

This is because of the high level of pollution in these cities and also due to the increasing stress level among people living here. Similarly, there are better schools and colleges in big cities but the level of competition here is somehow robbing the children of their childhood.

The cost of living in the big cities is quite high. In order to maintain a good lifestyle and build a good social standing it is essential to work hard day in and day out. Most people in big cities take huge loans for purchasing different things such as house, car, etc. Paying these loans and maintaining their lifestyle can be stressful. So even as they lead a comfortable life they are never at peace.

Living in a big city offers many opportunities but also brings challenges like loneliness, stress, and high living costs. Even with the excitement and facilities a city provides, people often trade their peace and happiness for a busy, competitive lifestyle. In the end, city life can be hard and makes us wonder what’s truly important for a good life.

English Summary

Life in Big Cities Essay

India has many metropolitan cities. Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta, Chennai, Bangalore, etc are some of them. But 80 per cent of our population lives in villages. A person from a rural area may find himself lost in a big city.

Life in a city looks attractive and glamorous. People are progressive. They are constantly keeping themselves abreast with the developments in the world and even the government takes care to see that our big cities develop like other big cities in the world.

This is a correct attitude as it would make India modern and any foreigner coming to this land would no more think that we are a country of only snake charmers and elephants, as was the impression in the West until a few years ago.

Cities provide job opportunities to people and we find thousands of villagers moving to cities to get employed. However, one finds that in comparison village life is more peaceful.

In cities most people live like strangers A city dweller works from morning till night. Distances are long and to an appointment in a big city is difficult. People get stuck traffic jams and have to also stand for long hours waiting for the bus to arrive.

Buses are fully packed with people and there is a lot of harassment. People become aggressive. Each man feels the need to satisfy his own need for comfort at the cost of others.

Facilities are limited everywhere and there are too many people to avail of them. This causes trouble at railway stations hospitals, trains, at cinema theaters, on buses and at petrol pumps.

The man has become materialistic and selfish in a big city. Nature is neglected and even if one wants to go near nature mother, he cannot. Pollution makes the air thick and city dwellers suffer from respiratory trouble.

A man of the city is a product of his artificial surrounding. He becomes insensitive to the needs of his fellow men. One cannot blame him because everyman has to look after his own family and has no time to look after his neighbour.

Children get neglected because both their parents work and have long office hours. Despite all these factors, the city still attracts us as it promises a life of action and progress. There are unlimited opportunities. Anyone can grab opportunities and improve his lot, if he wants to.

IELTS Writing Task 2 Advantages and Disadvantages Essay Topic: Living in big cities is becoming more difficult

Limited-Time Offer : Access a FREE 10-Day IELTS Study Plan!

The Essay Writing section of the IELTS Writing Module can be a difficult task for many IELTS Aspirants. Thus, it is vital that you polish your essay writing skills before attempting the IELTS.

Below is a sample IELTS Essay for the IELTS Essay topic:

Some people believe that living in big cities is becoming more difficult. Others believe that it is getting easier. Discuss both views and give your own opinion. OR Describe the advantages and disadvantages of living in the city.

There has been much debate about whether city life is harder or easier. While it is argued that it is more difficult to live there, I think there are more comforts of urban life.

City dwellers may be confronted with various problems. The first matter can be the higher cost of living than that in villages or other smaller towns because urban citizens might have to pay higher prices for transport service or household bills. Secondly, high population density in urban areas may cause overcrowding , followed by a lack of open spaces for green trees or other recreational activities for metropolitan residents . Finally, together with thousands of tons of daily emissions discharged from families or offices, a huge quantity of fumes are released from motor street vehicles or metropolitan factories, leading to air and water pollution. In other words, there may be a deterioration in the quality of air and water ; consequently, health conditions are likely to be threatened.

However, in my view, city life is becoming easier in several cases. Well-known universities, schools at the international level, or other high-quality educational centers located in metropolitan zones generate advantages for city inhabitants to enjoy better educational opportunities to increase their knowledge level . Another factor to make urban life easier is that thanks to the governmental financial investment in improvements in public transport systems like bus or underground services in cities, urban residents’ travel can be facilitated. Furthermore, metropolitan citizens may enhance their spiritual life or enjoy relaxing moments by going to the cinema and theater or spending time in art galleries as well as museums.

In conclusion, although there are numerous difficulties of residing in metropolitan areas, from my point of view, it is increasingly easier to spend life in big urban areas on the basis of my above-mentioned analyses and explanation.

The famous proverb is ALL THAT GLITTERS IS NOT GOLD.  Everything has advantages and disadvantages. Life in a big city is fascinating. But it also has some disadvantages as well. Life in a big city is really fast. Day by day many people migrate to big cities. Where there City life has charms, it also has some unattractiveness. Everyone wants to live in big cities but they don’t know the disadvantages of city life. Life in the city is a mixture of good and bad things. Life is totally artificial in big cities. A man in the city has comfort but he has been cut off from nature. (Life in a Big City Essay for 10th class with Quotations).

Man’s course begins in a garden, but it ends in a city. (Alexander Maclaren)

On the other hand city life also has some disadvantages. There is too much pollution like noise pollution and air pollution. There are a lot of dirty slums, people live in small houses.  A clean atmosphere is just available on a few grounds. The environment is full of smoke and smog. People are suffering from cardiac diseases chest diseases eye problems psychiatric issues and their main reason is pollution. People are unable to get a pure diet. Cleanliness peace is limited to posh areas which are out of reach of the poor. Nothing is free in the city. A person can not get anything without money. There are great hustle and bustle of city life. Everything is hastening. (Life in a Big City Essay for 2nd Year With Quotations)

If you live in a dirty big city, it means that you surely need a pastoral life to make yourself clean.

(MEHMET Murad)

Village life is full of peace, greenery, a pure diet, and a healthy environment! People have time for others. They live happily. City life has so many advantages and disadvantages. Everything has a bright and dark picture as well.  Every citizen has a duty to make their living place better. Responsible citizens can make their cities excellent living places after adopting different measures. Like planting more trees, decomposing slums, proper and equal use, and availability of water electricity, and gas. Avoiding extra transport usage. Minimize pollution at a personal level. It is an administrative duty to ensure a pure and healthy diet for the citizens. We can make city life an ideal life.

This city is what it is because our citizens are what they are. (Plato)

‘All We Imagine as Light’ Review: An Intimate Peek Into the Grind of Big-City Mumbai Life

Cannes 2024: The film marks the first from an Indian filmmaker to compete for the Palme d’Or in three decades

all we imagine as light

The heat, hustle, glory and grind of modern-day Mumbai give way to something all the more mysterious and ever so beguiling in Payal Kapadia’s “All We Imagine as Light,” an expansive and intimate feature that has itself shined some late-breaking glory on this year’s Cannes Film Festival. As the first Indian filmmaker to compete for the Palme d’Or in three decades, Kapadia claimed a measure of victory well before this year’s edition; by exploring social precarity through soft tones of romantic yearning, her film seems likely to claim a prize before Cannes closes. Indeed, jury president Greta Gerwig might even notice certain thematic similarities to her signature “Frances Ha,” as Kapadia’s film also traces the siren’s call of an indifferent metropolis just as likely to chew you up as to make your dreams come true. With a population of more than 20 million and counting, Mumbai has no shortage of such dreamers, a fact partly alluded to by the film’s title — which imagines what’s behind the seas of apartment windows that consume the city skyline — and by a documentary prologue that skirts a similar sea of people, sharing voices from the crowd. Following her Cannes-acclaimed doc “A Night of Knowing Nothing,” Kapadia’s narrative debut goes granular soon enough, welcoming us into the dingy high-rise flat shared by nurses Prabha (Kani Kusruti) and Anu (Divya Prabha). Both come from the countryside, only now wouldn’t live anywhere else; both work at the same maternity ward, sharing birth control on the sly; and both suffer for acute longing, though here the circumstances diverge. In many ways, younger Anu has it easier, as the object of her affection is very much in sight, if ever out of reach. You see, Anu is Hindu and her crush Shiz (Hridhu Haroon) is Muslim. Under Modi’s Hindutva, never those twains shall meet. At least not in private, in any case, because the city’s night markets and bazaars offer stages where the frustrated pair may at least hide in plain view.

Prabha’s issues are more metaphysical, however, linked to an arranged marriage to a chap who fled the country shortly after their nuptials. He left the nurse with little more proof of matrimony than the occasional overseas care-package and the societal expectation that she snuff out new sparks of romance. And dammit, the woman has suitors, including a doctor colleague who treats his own case of urban ennui by writing poetry. In one of the film’s greatest highs, Prabha reads one of those poems to herself late one night, sitting before her open window as the heat swelters and the power turns off. Lit by the cityscape behind her, the lovesick nurse makes her inner life tactile and her soul universal. She feels as if she’s one in 22 million, and, in that precise moment, like she’s the only damn person in the world. While Kapadia and Sofia Coppola explore different sides of the socioeconomic spectrum, both share a similar interest in interiority, and in the ways female characters create intimate worlds to shield against unforgiving externalities. This vision of Mumbai can certainly be harsh, most clearly exemplified by a third colleague: nurse Parvaty (Chhaya Kadam), now getting evicted so that developers may turn her home of 20 years into a luxury condo. (The new building’s sales pitch: “Class is for the privileged.” Well, thanks.) With few opportunities for recourse, Parvaty makes the decision all urbanites dread, setting the stage for a second act that finds the two younger nurses helping their older colleague return to her seaside village. Through this change in scenery arrives a delicate change in tone, one that reframes the film’s title with emphasis on a different word.

Once freed from the iron grip of realism, “All We Imagine as Light” begins to offer its leads what the city never could. We will reveal nothing further, because Kapadia herself parcels out these reveals at a deliberate pace, offering metaphysical hints with the gentleness of a sea breeze. That gentleness spans out across the film, informing and underscoring both sides. If Kapadia never hides the harsher elements of urban life, she also does not accentuate them or cast them in a miserablist glow. Taking place almost entirely at night, the film’s Mumbai first-half swings to a jazzy piano score, finding squalor and grandeur as two sides of the same coin.

Setting the second act under the daytime sun, Kapadia keeps things equally lush, playing into the promise that sends so many millions to any global metropolis. It also leads us to the mantra we repeat to gird us through the daily grind once there. “You have to believe the illusion,” says a disembodied voice in a mid-film documentary reset. “Otherwise you’ll go mad.”

Park City High School Latinos in Action student awarded scholarship for ‘stronger together’ essays

Park City High School Latinos in Action students at an annual conference.

A Park City High School Latinos in Action student recently won a big scholarship at the organization’s regional conference. Here's more on one student’s story.

Latinos in Action is a national group meant to empower Latino youth and prepare them for college and careers. LIA programs are year-long elective courses at the middle school, junior high or high school level. The program also hosts conferences with workshops and competitions.

At this year’s LIA Conference for Central and Northern Utah, Park City High School LIA advisor Jake Jobe said students received multiple scholarships and awards.

“It was probably like the most successful year we've ever had at the at the conference,” he said.

Leslie Juarez, Anneliese Carreto and Melani Juarez won first place in the short film competition. Katy Munoz won third place in the writing competition. Eimee Meneses won one of four general scholarships.

Park City High School LIA president Jessica Loya won the writing competition and got the top Jose Cebellos Scholarship award at the conference. Both of her essays followed the conference’s theme: stronger together.

For her scholarship essay, Loya wrote about how her cultural values have influenced who she is as a student and person and the value of the LIA program.

“I looked up to peers when I was younger, and they tutored us at the elementary level," she said. "Now at the high school level, I'm one of the tutors.”

Loya said she has enjoyed being part of LIA because it opens doors to different opportunities, like the conference, and it allows students to be surrounded by others with similar backgrounds and goals. However, Loya said LIA also taught her to be a leader. In her essay, she wrote about participating in district board meetings to help adopt an equity policy and going to the Park City Council to advocate for affordable housing.

For the writing competition, Loya wrote about how unifying language can be.

“I wrote about Spanish, and how it's my first language," she said. "Yet, sometimes I felt like my English dominance or fluency was greater.”

In the essay, Loya wrote her dad once said to her, “Hablan mejor los misioneros mormones,” meaning Mormon missionaries speak better. She was embarrassed, but Loya said it was true and many Hispanic kids have heard something similar. The comment pushed her to work on her Spanish and she became an LIA tutor. With progress, she connected the language with film, music, food, art, traditions and culture.

At the end of the writing competition essay, Loya wrote there are 486 million Spanish speakers in this world, and they are all stronger together.

Loya will be attending the University of Utah this fall. While she is unsure what career path she wants to pursue, she wrote in her scholarship essay she does know who she wants to be: “a good daughter who can share new experiences with her parents,” “a good sister who can guide her little sister through challenges her parents are unfamiliar with and can support her older brother toward a lifestyle he can thrive in,” and “a good student who seeks learning opportunities outside the classroom.” Loya also wrote she wants to be financially independent to “support her family and give back to her community.”

Cubs' Shota Imanaga is crushing it on the mound, but life as a Chicagoan is coming along more slowly

Imanaga makes success look so simple, it’s easy to forget to ask him how he’s handling life alone in a huge new city halfway around the world from home..

The Cubs' Shota Imanaga cheers during his MLB debut at Wrigley Field.

Michael Reaves/Getty Images

Look, Cubs newcomer Shota Imanaga brought this upon himself.

Imanaga, 30, has been so obscenely good since arriving from Japan, we have no choice but to compare him with giant pitching names present and past.

The lefty starter is 5-0 with a minuscule 0.84 ERA, the fourth-lowest after the first nine starts of a season since ERA became an official statistic in — come on, you know you remember it — 1913. The last to go lower in nine starts was Jacob deGrom, at 0.62 in 2021, when he was well on his way to a third Cy Young Award before his season was cut short in July. In 2009, Zack Greinke was at 0.82 and en route to winning the Cy. In 1966, during baseball’s second dead-ball era, Juan Marichal was at 0.69 after nine starts en route to the Hall of Fame.

That’s some company Imanaga is keeping. Not only that, but his 0.84 — the lowest on record for a pitcher in the first nine starts of his career — nips Fernando Valenzuela’s 0.91 with the Dodgers in the Mexican’s unforgettable 1981 debut. All Valenzuela did from there was make his first of six consecutive All-Star teams and win rookie of the year and the Cy.

  • Yu Darvish’s evaluation of Chicago resonating with Cubs’ Shota Imanaga

So there’s the bar for the newest Cubs sensation. Sounds perfectly reasonable, right?

But that’s not really fair, of course. Imanaga inevitably will begin to move closer to real-life numbers at some point. And speaking of real life, he has one. He has made success on the mound look so simple, it makes it easy to forget to ask a guy who moved halfway around the world and is living alone in a huge new city how life is going otherwise.

“Chicago’s such a great city, there’s no way I can get homesick,” he said via interpreter Edwin Stanberry.

A day after his latest gem at Wrigley Field, Imanaga walked into the clubhouse in red ankle boots and cuffed jeans, a black baseball cap on backward and a backpack slung over his shoulder. When he reached way up there to high-five 6-6 pitcher Ben Brown hello, the 5-10, 175-pound Imanaga, rising onto his toes, hardly looked the part of a dominant starter.

But that he has been, and the Cubs, who are struggling mightily to generate offense, have needed every bit of it.

The pitching might be coming along faster than the experience of living here, though.

“The [nice weather] lightens my mood,” he said. “It’s a lot better than the cold.”

Imanaga has ordered Japanese takeout a number of times but has not yet sat down for a proper meal in a restaurant. He keeps meaning to sample a Chicago hot dog but has yet to belly up to a counter and order one. He has gone all-in on a couple of pizzas and marveled at the portion sizes, the thought occurring to him that pizza could help him keep his weight up throughout the long grind of a season.

“I’ve definitely noticed the fact that I’m a lot shorter than a lot of players here, but [at least] if I do gain weight, they’re not going to notice much,” he cracked.

And as some dogged reporters have sniffed out, Imanaga runs on Dunkin’. He stops for an iced latte on the way to the ballpark partly to practice English but also because that little bit of a routine helps him feel like he actually lives here.

“And also,” he added with a smile, “I really like coffee.”

As he’ll discover sooner or later, nothing goes better with a cup than a nice hot dog. Although a sparkling ERA that’s already screaming for All-Star votes sure comes close.

The Cubs pitcher is off to a blisteringly good start with a minuscule earned-run average. Here’s a game-by-game look at his first few starts.

Shota Imanaga cheers while in his Chicago Cubs uniform during his MLB debut at Wrigley Field.

Three-dot dash

• Watching reliever Aroldis Chapman mow down three good hitters — Mike Tauchman (strikeout), Seiya Suzuki (strikeout) and Cody Bellinger (lazy fly to left) — in the eighth inning Sunday at Wrigley brought back memories of 2016. Trying to stay awake as the Cubs were outhit 36-18 while losing three of four to the under-.500 Pirates most definitely did not. … • Despite being on the business end of a three-game sweep at Yankee Stadium , Chicago’s other team was outhit by a more respectable count of 28-20. Or as the White Sox call it: exciting progress. …

• Yet another tip of the beer helmet to Northwestern’s women’s lacrosse team , which is back in the national semifinals. The defending champs will play Florida on Friday in Cary, North Carolina. … • The Sky blocked 13 shots Saturday against the Wings in their first victory of the season. They also had 19 offensive rebounds, more than they had in any game in 2023. And they did those things without injured rookie Kamilla Cardoso. It won’t be pleasant at all to have to face this team when the 6-7 Cardoso gets back out there — hopefully in June — and starts throwing her size around. … • After taking a 2-0 series lead on the Pacers, Tom Thibodeau’s Knicks just couldn’t hold on and were eliminated on their home floor in Game 7 on Sunday. For the ex-Bulls coach, it’s the 11th straight season coming up short of the conference finals, proving once again that he’s nothing without Keith Bogans and Ronnie Brewer.... … • No offense to the PGA Championship or the fine folks at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, but when scores reach 20-under, as they did in the final round Sunday, it has to be said: That’s not a major; it’s the Grand Prize Game on “Bozo’s Circus.”

Crime scene tape.
