Beschreibung

Description

Kinuta N-DT01 plays with notions of sheer mass and negative space when viewed from different angles. Dead-on, the broad solid-oak planking suggests a Constructivist influence while from the side those same supports appear ultra-thin. Collaborating with Karimoku, Norm Architects’ take on multidimensional design gains further leverage from the dining table’s flawless finishing.

Karimoku Case

Each collection of Karimoku Case's premium wood furniture originates with a specific architectural project and represents a collaboration between the legacy Japanese brand and leading practitioners such as Britain's Norman Foster, Copenhagen's Norm Architects and Tokyo's Keiji Ashizawa. With starting points that include furnishing select restaurants, retail spaces and private residences, the collaborating designers have an opportunity to acquaint themselves with the Japanese company’s extensive heritage and unparalleled manufacturing expertise. Initially produced as bespoke one-offs, the furniture pieces that were originally developed in a dialogue with a specific architectural setting thus have become a range of standout options offered for wider distribution, finding a place in a host of environments. Imbued with coherent style, they exhibit a richness of the materials, mindful production methods and timeless minimalist appeal as Karimoku Case ushers in the icons of tomorrow.

Norm Architects

“Norms aren’t boring,” Jonas Bjerre-Poulsen of Norm Architects says, reflecting on the name of his Copenhagen-based design studio, formed with fellow architect Kasper Rønn. “On the contrary, the firm wants to make use of all that centuries-old wisdom that we now know as design.” Norm encompasses furniture, dinner service, kitchenware and lighting fixtures as well as architecture projects with third partner Linda Korndal.

“There’s something in our design culture that’s born out of our connection to the Nordic climate, to the crafts and the natural materials that surround us, and that 'something' makes us stand out,” Jonas says. Norm Architects has garnered numerous prestigious awards such as Red Dot, IF Design Award and Design Plus Award. Jonas focuses on aesthetics and Kasper concentrates on technology but the lines are often blurred on any offering, says Jonas. “You should be able to look at it in 10, 20 years’ time and still find it useful and beautiful.”

Karimoku Case Study

Frederik Werner on the launch of Norm Architects’ new furniture collaboration during Copenhagen’s 3 Days Of Design.

The Kinfolk Gallery

As part of 3 Days of Design 2019, the Kinfolk Gallery was transformed into a contemporary apartment setting for the launch of furniture and lifestyle brand Karimoku Case Study. Merging the simple Japanese design aesthetics of furniture makers Karimoku with the work of Copenhagen’s local creative scene, the inaugural collection was produced by the Danish design firm Norm Architects and Tokyo-based designer Keiji Ashizawa. Although the pieces felt readily at home dotted around the Kinfolk Gallery, they were initially designed for a very different setting: two newly renovated apartments in Kinuta, Tokyo.

What inspired the collaboration with Karimoku?

We met Keiji Ashizawa during a workshop in Southern Japan. He introduced us to the Karimoku team and got us involved with the Kinuta apart...

karimoku case study n dt01

Inspired by the crude beauty and roughness of the demolished Kinuta apartment interiors, prior to their restoration, the geometrical design of the apartments is reflected in the structure of the table. The design unleashes the beauty of the material through its succinct structure, shown through the transparent glass top, while providing a warm and relaxing atmosphere when accompanied by chairs in a space.
