X-Men '97 Ex-Showrunner Gives Fans More 'Homework'

Ex-X-Men '97 showrunner Beau DeMayo gives fans another piece of 'homework,' but this time it's something to read instead of watch.

The following contains possible spoilers for the season finale of X-Men '97 , "Tolerance is Extinction."

Ex- X-Men '97 showrunner Beau DeMayo recently gave the fans another piece of "homework" to look into, which ties into the second chapter of the season finale, "Tolerance is Extinction." However, this time, it's something to read instead of watch.

On X, DeMayo shared the cover to Uncanny X-Men #304 , with the issue itself being part of the X-Men storyline " Fatal Attractions ." Said cover sees various characters such as Wolverine, Bishop, Rogue, Iceman and Colossus on it, while in the corner, text can be seen that reads, "Fatal Attractions - An Offer of Salvation...A Betrayal Most Bitter!" Above the cover, DeMayo conveyed, "This week's homework assignment."

Before this post, DeMayo had recommended that fans watch the X-Men: The Animated Series episodes "One Man's Worth" and "Sanctuary" before the first chapter of "Tolerance is Extinction." He subsequently added two more episodes , "Descent" and "The Final Decision," writing above them, "Finale prep recommended episodes."

Besides DeMayo and his recommendations, Cable actor Chris Potter potentially hinted at the return of Gambit in "Tolerance is Extinction," affirming, "They told me I'd be playing a new character. I said, 'What do you mean? I'm Gambit.' They said, 'Not anymore, we're killing him off in episode 3. You're going to be Cable now.' Now, as it turns out, Cable is the only one who can bring Gambit back." Prior to that, head director Jake Castorena ironically confirmed that X-Men '97 wouldn't undo Gambit and Magneto's sacrifices in "Remember It."

Castorena also touched upon X-Men '97 's TV-14 rating , avowing that just because the production team can, doesn't mean they should "as far as violence or showcasing stuff," because when one shows "too much gory graphic-ness," it tends to desensitize the audience. "Ideally our goal is to not have the audience become desensitized to the violence, but to be emotionally exhausted from it, to live in that true realm of how our characters are living with it," Castorena continued.

He went on to further note that it wasn't a challenge because "first and foremost, story over everything," stating that if something doesn't service the narrative, it doesn't go in. What does the story need for what moment and when and where is that line? Castorena concluded. "That's what we work together as a team to figure out."

Concerning X-Men '97 itself, producer Brad Winderbaum professed that Season 3 is in development . That said, plot details for Season 2 and Season 3 are currently under wraps.

Get the popcorn ready, we're having an X-Men marathon

The X-Men ‘97 season finale is fast approaching, but before the highly anticipated episode lands, there are a few things that showrunner Beau DeMayo recommends watching in preparation. 

DeMayo, the writer and creator of the newest X-Men show, took to Twitter to let fans know exactly what homework they need to do before the first season comes to an end in May: "Finale prep recommended episodes: One Man’s Worth Pt 1 and 2, Sanctuary Pt 1 and 2, Descent, The Final Decision."

For those unfamiliar, DeMayo is referencing episodes from the classic '90s show X-Men: The Animated Series. The first two episodes, One Man’s Worth part 1 and 2 (season 4 episodes 1 and 2) see Trevor Fitzroy and Bantam travel back in time to kill Professor X while Bishop, Shard, Storm, and Wolverine travel forward to the future to try to stop it. Sanctuary part 1 and 2 (season 4 episodes 6 and 7) see Magneto try to transport all mutants to an orbiting asteroid named but loses control of the rock to ulterior forces. 

Next on DeMayo’s watchlist is Decent (season 5 episode 12) which reveals the origin of Mr. Sinister, and last up is The Final Decision (season 1 episode 13) which saw Senator Kelly make a decision about his future plans in politics based on Magneto, the X-Men, and Sentinel's standings. That's a pretty hefty watchlist to get through before the three-part finale drops, but don't worry, all episodes of X-Men: The Animated Series are available to stream on Disney Plus, as well as all previous episodes of X-Men ‘97. 

X-Men ‘97 follows everyone’s favorite band of mutants as they use their gifts to protect a world that doesn't understand them. In episode 7 , titled Bright Eyes, we saw the team locate the Sentinel inventor only to find out that they had been tricked, and it was confirmed that Bastion had been orchestrating the conflicts against the X-Men. Not much has been revealed about the last three episodes apart from the fact that despite mutant-human relations reaching a tipping point, the X-Men must unite to face a new threat.

The finale begins on May 1 with episode 8 titled Tolerance is Extinction part 1, then will continue on May 8 with part 2, and finally season 1 will come to an end with part 3 airing on May 15, 2024.

X-MEN '97: Beau DeMayo Shares "Homework Assignment" For Next Week's Penultimate Episode - SPOILERS

As we head towards the season finale of X-Men '97 , former showrunner Beau DeMayo has shared a "homework assignment" for next week's penultimate episode...

"Magneto was right..."

Former X-Men '97 showrunner Beau DeMayo has taken to social media to share a "homework assignment" for fans that may want a better idea of what to expect from the middle chapter in the three-part season finale, which airs on Disney+ next Wednesday.

DeMayo posted the cover to 1993's Uncanny X-Men #304 , which marked the 30th anniversary celebration of the iconic mutant heroes, and the third chapter in the "Fatal Attractions" storyline.

Spoilers for Tolerance is Extinction - Part 1 and (possibly) Part 2  follow.

Though a few significant events occur in this issue that could inform the episode, we'd say it will most likely draw influence from Magneto's arc. Towards the end of Tolerance is Extinction - Part 1 , Dr. Valerie Cooper frees Magnus from Bastion's prison, and the Master of Magnetism flies to one of the northern magnetic pole to manipulate Earth's magnetic field, using his powers to wipe out the human hybrids while also destabilizing humanity's infrastructure.

Back at the X-Mansion, Professor X returns, and Wolverine states that Magneto has declared war.

This issue also marks a major turning point for Erik Lensherr, who comes to believe that humanity is doomed no matter what he does, and picks up his old helmet, once again becoming the ruthless villain the X-Men first encountered many years before.

Though the series may not follow this to the letter, it's probably safe to assume that Magneto will be abandoning any attempts at peaceful coexistence - unless the returning Charles Xavier can get through to his old friend.

"It sounds so cheesy to say this, I do subscribe to the Charles Xavier model," DeMayo told EW in a recent interview. "Even at our most different, there's a lot we still have in common. Ultimately, you can take all the philosophy of Xavier's dream, but if you boil it down, empathy is the way into the future." It would seem Xavier's arrival back home will offer a foil to Magneto's stance."

X-Men '97 's voice cast includes Ray Chase as Cyclops, Jennifer Hale as Jean Grey, Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm, Cal Dodd as Wolverine, JP Karliak as Morph, Lenore Zann as Rogue, George Buza as Beast, AJ LoCascio as Gambit, Holly Chou as Jubilee, Isaac Robinson-Smith as Bishop, Matthew Waterson as Magneto and Adrian Hough as Nightcrawler.

DeMayo, who was recently fired, serves as head writer, while episodes are directed by Jake Castorena, Chase Conley and Emi Yonemura. Brad Winderbaum, Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso and DeMayo executive produce.

The Original ’80s Animated X-MEN Pilot Is Deemed Homework for X-MEN ’97

W e only have two episodes left of X-Men ’97 , and former series showrunner Beau DeMayo has been giving fans “homework” for the final episodes of season one. This homework takes the form of old X-Men episodes or comics to prepare for what’s coming next. The latest assignment comes in the form of watching the original  X-Men animated pilot from 1989.

In the clip for episode nine of X-Men ’97 , which you can see above, we see the team suit up in their classic costumes. Cyclops wears his suit with the skullcap, Wolverine puts on his brown and tan costume. Storm has her original suit from the comics . These are the same looks from the comics, also famously used in the original  X-Men pilot, “Pryde of the X-Men.”

Another factor used in “Pryde of the X-Men” was Magneto’s orbiting stronghold, Asteroid M. His fortress was already teased several times in the show’s opening credits, as it appeared in X-Men: The Animated Series . We think the addition of “Pryde of the X-Men” as so-called homework only further fuels the notion that Magneto’s base of operations is making a big comeback. X-Men: The Animated Series is one of the most iconic superhero cartoons ever made . Without its huge success, it’s unlikely Fox would have ever greenlit the first  X-Men film. But the  X-Men cartoon we got was almost entirely different from what Marvel originally planned. Back in ’89, Marvel commissioned a pilot episode that introduced the X-Men’s junior member Kitty Pryde, hence the title “Pryde of the X-Men.” It only aired sporadically in syndication, before an eventual VHS release with a very odd live-action intro of Spider-Man talking about the importance of voting… to a presumably kid audience. (Sure, why not).

“Pryde of the X-Men” is fascinating for several reasons. It is a sort of spinoff to the version of the team first introduced in 1982’s Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends series. That is why they continued the weird decision to make Wolverine Australian, an idea first used in Spidey’s cartoon. (And which kind of predicted Aussie actor Hugh Jackman’s eventual role as Logan). For some reason, the producers substituted Rogue with Dazzler.

The cartoon had the classic line-up and concept from Uncanny X-Men , despite the late ’80s comics featuring a different team at the time. Despite its theme song paling in comparison to the ’90s show , the original pilot has some great things going for it. Overall, the animation was better. Plus, it featured iconic team members like Nightcrawler, Colossus, and Kitty as regulars. Kitty never once appeared in the ’90s show, which always felt like a glaring omission—maybe one X-Men ’97 will eventually rectify.

Back then, no network believed in X-Men as an animated series. It was producer Margaret Loesch who successfully pitched Fox Kids on the X-Men concept on the second try, in 1992. She cited the massive sales figures for X-Men #1 as an example of the IP’s popularity. No executive believed in X-Men , but Loesch staked her reputation on Marvel’s Mutants becoming huge. She was right, and the rest is history. Although  X-Men: The Animated Series as produced bore little resemblance to “Pryde of the X-Men,” the one-off cartoon had a second life. Its designs and concepts were the basis of the massively popular Konami X-Men arcade game, also released in 1992.

As different as both shows were, they had one big thing in common. Both pilots featured a POV character who was a young girl discovering her mutant powers, and she’s our eyes and ears into this new world. In the ’90s series, it was Jubilee. We could easily see this approach, which began in “Pryde of the X-Men,” translated into the eventual MCU X-Men. It’s just too good and obvious a storytelling device. In the end, we would not be shocked in the MCU X-Men film begins with a teenage girl approaching the doors of a certain mansion located at 1407, Graymalkin Lane. But for now, it looks like X-Men ’97 is going to pay homage to this once-forgotten iteration of Xavier’s students.

X-Men '97 's season 1 finale, "Tolerance Is Extinction," hits Disney+ on Wednesday and former showrunner Beau DeMayo has shared one final "homework assignment" for fans. 

As you can see below, he's recommended that we track down the  X-Men: The Animated Series episode "The Final Decision." 

In that, Magneto kidnaps Senator Kelly to start a war between humans and mutants. Sentinels made out of plastic then attack, rescuing the politician and leaving the X-Men to rescue a badly injured Master of Magnetism. 

Bolivar Trask and Master Mold also factor into the episode, with the X-Men and Magneto working to destroy the latter and get Kelly back from Trask (who planned to replace his mind with a robot). The incident changes Kelly's mind about mutants and the episode ends with Mister Sinister watching Scott Summers and Jean Grey getting engaged. 

Could that be when the villain swapped Jean with his clone?

There's a lot of excitement surrounding the finale, including whether Gambit will somehow be resurrected after his death on Genosha. The most popular theory right now is that the version who died was another clone, and Gambit being in Sinister's clutches would make for a great cliffhanger. 

DeMayo was also asked why Deadpool hasn't appeared in X-Men '97 , confirming the Merc with the Mouth was "off-limits" to the series. He didn't elaborate on why, though we'd assume it has something to do with the fact Wade Wilson will take centre stage in Deadpool & Wolverine this summer. 

He's far from the only mutant fans are keen to see more of in the show, and DeMayo was quick to remind another fan wondering about Sabretooth's whereabouts that there was only room for so many of them in the first season...

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.  

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
