The School of Science has divided the Science Program (JS5100) into two new program choices – Science (Group A) program (JS5102) and Science (Group B) program (JS5103). The two Science programs are designed to cater to the academic needs and aspirations of students. Science (Group A) program is tailor-made for those students who are interested in the fields of Physical Science. Science (Group B) program is more suitable for those students who are interested in the fields of Chemistry and Life Science.

IRE is a pioneer study track tailor-made for students with particular interest in pursuing a research career in Science or broadening their exposure to research during their undergraduate studies. It offers students an early opportunity to nurture their research abilities in addition to discipline-specific knowledge in regular Science programs.

The IRE program has a similar curriculum structure as the Science (Group A) and Science (Group B) programs. But students admitted to the IRE program can enjoy a FREE choice among six major programs offered by the School: Biochemistry and Cell Biology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Ocean Science and Technology, and Physics.

It further distinguishes itself from regular Science programs by providing students with:

Participation in advanced research projects under the supervision of world-class professors

Opportunities to meet with Nobel Laureates and renowned scientists

Individualized Research Guidance and Mentoring from experienced faculty members

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)

Exchange opportunity in renowned foreign universities / research institutes

Summer research internship opportunity in foreign universities and institutions

Scholarship support for overseas learning trips

Science (Group A) program   (JS5101)  is for the students who wish to spend more time exploring their interests in the field of physical science. Upon completion of the first year of study, they can opt to major in one of the major programs for Science (Group A) or the three programs with an Extended Major in Artificial Intelligence.

Students who have developed clear interests in both physical science and artificial intelligence may apply for Science (Group A) with an Extended Major in Artificial Intelligence (JS5181) . They can opt to major in either one of Mathematics/Physics/Ocean Science and Technology with an Extended Major in Artificial Intelligence upon completion of the first year of study.

Extra electives will be used as additional supporting information, such as a tiebreaker.

In admissions score calculation, since the School will consider 5 subjects for IRE, Science ( Group A), Science (Group A) with an Extended Major in Artificial Intelligence, and Science (Group B) Programs, and 6 subjects  for Biotechnology and Business and Mathematics and Economics Programs, additional subject(s) will be considered as a tie‐breaker or a bonus in admissions score calculation.

Students in the IRE program have free choice among six science major programs. Students in the Science programs who have 1 science subject at Level 5** are guaranteed entry to the corresponding science program.

Students' academic performance is the most important factor for consideration. Students who demonstrate exceptional abilities and performance in other areas will also be considered favorably, e.g. students who are the Hong Kong Team members or medalists of International Physics/Mathematics Olympiad Competitions.

For JUPAS students, we will consider an applicant’s overall profile and will take the following factors into account:

Subject performance;

Other Experiences and Achievements (OEA);

Additional electives;

Interview performance (if any);

Student Learning Profile (SLP);

A 500 word personal statement;

School Reference Report (academic performance, personal and general abilities)

OEA, SRR, SPN and SLP will be taken into account and will constitute a certain percentage of weighting in the assessment. Achievements under the OEA such as awards obtained in international competitions may be useful. Students having these awards may be considered for granting conditional offers. The University will consider OEA information, mainly for Band A students.

In general, we try to learn more about the applicant as a person e.g. on personality, aspirations, and motivation/suitability for the program applied. A good essay should tell a story and have a clear focus, reveal passion and expose personality, show creativity and independent thinking so that after reading, the reader would form a unique impression about the applicant.

Band A applicants who are nominated under the SPN scheme will be considered seriously. They may be given bonus points or conditional offers if they meet HKUST and the School of Science's minimum entrance requirements.

We will look at the students' HKDSE results together with other information including their band choice, interview performance, OEA, SRR, SLP to constitute a full picture of the students for assessment.

Students with full HKDSE and another full qualifications (such as IB, SAT, GCEAL) can apply via either the JUPAS or non-JUPAS route, but not both.

Through my study at HKUST, I’ve seen a much bigger world, and grown to be a much richer person intellectually and psychologically. In academic, I joined IRE and learned to be scientifically mature...

Personal and Teaching Statements

This page offers some guidelines for writing personal statements and teaching statements.

Guidelines for Writing a Personal Statement

A personal statement is, in fact, a research statement. You need to follow a certain structure or at least provide certain information. Try to keep it short - only one or two pages - since you are sending it to a very busy person! Try to avoid describing what you did as a child. Most academics are not interested, so including this information would most likely only hurt your application.

Click here to see a sample statement.

1st Paragraph

Describe the area of research that interests you and why. If you have already done some research work in this area, be sure to mention it. Also, explain why you think you are suitable for this area. You may also describe competitions in the area that you have done well in and special academic attainments. For example, a double major in mathematics and computer science probably set you apart from students who only studied computer science. If you have nothing special to say, then just mention briefly how you came to choose this area.

2nd Paragraph

Describe research programs you have worked on (one paragraph per program.)

  • What did you find?
  • What did you learn?
  • What approaches did you try?
  • Did these approaches work or not?

3rd Paragraph

Explain why you feel you need a Masters degree or PhD.

4th Paragraph

Tell the reader why you want to go to that particular university. Make it easy for them:

  • If you want to work with a particular person or persons tell them who you want to work with and why.
  • If you want to work in a particular area, tell them why you want to work in that area in their university.
  • If there is no particular person you want to work with or particular area you want to work in, explain why you would like to join their program.

5th Paragraph

You can also state what papers you have read from that university and what you enjoyed about them or how they inspired you. Lastly, tell them what you hope to gain from their university.

Different from a personal statement, a teaching statement focuses on your philosophy of education and teaching experience. You can highlight any innovative lessons you have designed and taught and include any positive feedback you have received either from your supervisors or the students themselves. Try to make your enthusiasm and motivation for teaching obvious. Try to keep the statement to two pages or less, especially if you are also sending a personal statement and CV.

Since this type of statement is more difficult to put into a specific structure than a personal statement, try include all the elements mentioned above and then e-mail it to your communication tutor for copy editing.

After you write a draft of your statement, please send it to your communication tutor for copy editing.

Bsc in quantitative finance.

program-based-admission

The BSc in Quantitative Finance (QFIN) program is designed for students with a strong desire to pursue careers in the finance industry. Students follow an integrated curriculum comprised of courses developed by different schools.

They acquire a solid base of financial knowledge and the mathematical and statistical skills necessary to solve complex financial problems.

Important topics covered in the program include:

  • Derivative securities
  • Investment analysis
  • Portfolio management
  • Quantitative trading
  • Risk management

The QFIN curriculum is flexible enough to allow students to choose additional majors or minors. The BSc in Computer Science (COSC) is one of the most popular additional majors selected by QFIN students. Available minors include, but are not limited to, Actuarial Mathematics, Big Data Technology, Entrepreneurship, Information Technology, and Mathematics.

Extended Major QFIN students may apply for the extended major in  Artificial Intelligence  or  Digital Media and Creative Arts  at the end of the 3rd term of study, if they satisfy the extended major requirement. Students completing the extended major will graduate with a title bearing both the traditional major subject they selected and the extended major.  For more details, refer to “ Business with an Extended Major in AI / DMCA ” .

Instead, they have the autonomy to discover their academic interests and strengths at their own pace and to apply for an Extended Major at the end of the third semester (i.e. in the fall term of Year 2).

Students from the selected business majors, regardless of their admission route (school-based or program-based), are eligible to apply for an Extended major if they meet the major requirements.

hkust gbus personal statement

Our students commonly take one or two semesters of study leave to work as full-time interns at financial firms. The industry experience and connections they gain from multiple internships give them a significant advantage in the job market upon graduation. QFIN graduates are highly sought after by employers from the finance industry and across various business sectors.

Graduates have a proven track record of career success in a range of fields, such as investment banks, commercial banks, hedge fund, asset management firms, private equity firms, brokerage firms, insurance companies, consulting firms, the Big Four auditors, and government agencies.

Our graduates are also well prepared to obtain high-level professional qualifications such as Chartered Financial Analyst, Certified Financial Planner, Financial Risk Manager, and Professional Risk Manager certifications.
