On October 7, 2021, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will have completed 20 years of public service as the head of a state and national government. He embodies the hopes of the common citizen as a bright individual of humble upbringing who climbed to high office through hard effort and sacrifice. As Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Government has taken numerous measures to improve everyone’s educational experience, particularly by making it more accessible to all segments of society. Even though more work remains to be done in this area, the progress gained thus far is worth noting. To ensure education reaches every corner of India, enabling every household and section of society regardless of caste, creed, or religion, the Modi government looks to be working with missionary zeal.

Modi and his government appear to have devoted their entire tenure in office to reforming India’s education sector, including efforts to resurrect our institutions’ rankings, establishing 20 world-class universities across the country, skilling youth for a better future, and reforming regulatory bodies, among other initiatives.

With the pledge of “Education for All,” the Modi Government has taken various initiatives to ensure quality education and to reinforce a system that has been developed over the years by successive governments.

Initiatives – School Education

Construction of toilets in all government schools and the first National Achievement Survey (NAS) are two notable milestones in school education.

The government also performed the first-of-its-kind largest sample survey to assess the learning outcomes of pupils in grades III, V, and VIII.

The Narendra Modi government has established seven new Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), six new Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), and two new Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs) over the last four years (IISERs).

Since 2014, the last year has been the most fruitful for the Human Resources Development Ministry. The government, in keeping with its vow to offer higher education institutions more autonomy, has adopted a new law that will grant IIMs unprecedented academic and administrative flexibility. Additionally, a new policy adopted by the University Grants Commission (UGC) grants various degrees of autonomy to institutions of higher learning based on their performance.

The Government also established the Higher Education Funding Agency to lend money to institutions developing world-class infrastructure.

Establishment of world-class institutions

To help Indian colleges enhance their international rankings, the government is aiding 20 institutions, ten public and ten private, in breaking into the global top-100 list. Additionally, the ministry would provide Rs 1,000 crore to each of the ten public colleges to help them enhance their rankings. The “Institutions of National Importance” are planned to have more autonomy than other institutions of higher education.

Girls’ Education

Beti Bachao Beti Padhao: The campaign aims to increase the girl child’s sex ratio and status, as well as her enrolment in education. The Ministry of Women and Child Development spearheaded the effort, which was backed by the Department of School Education and Literacy. The “Beti Bachao Beti Padhao” Abhiyan is instituting an award for School Management Committees that achieve 100 percent transition of girls between levels of schooling.

UDAAN is a CBSE initiative that enables disadvantaged female students and other students from SC/ST and minorities to transition from school to post-secondary professional education, particularly in Science and Mathematics. It intends to narrow the quality gap between secondary education and engineering admissions systems by focusing on three parameters: curriculum design, transaction, and assessment.

PRAGATI (Providing Assistance for Girls’ Advancement in Technical Education):

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) scheme selects one girl from each family with an annual income of less than Rs. 6 lakh. The selection process will be based on the girls’ performance on the qualifying examinations for technical education. The scholarship is worth Rs. 30,000 or the lesser of the tuition fees or the actual cost of attendance, whichever is smaller, plus Rs. 2000 per month for ten months as a contingency allowance.

Individuals with Disabilities

SAKSHAM Scholarship for differently abled children: The AICTE has decided to award 1,000 scholarships each year to differently abled students who wish to pursue technical education. The scholarships will be awarded based on their performance in qualifying examinations. The scholarship would be worth Rs 30,000 or the lesser of the tuition fees or the actual cost of attendance plus Rs 2000 per month for ten months as a contingency allowance.

Opportunities for education are enhanced with the use of ICT.

By allowing learners’/teachers’ access to the greatest educational resources, ICT-enabled learning possibilities are expected to increase outreach, improve quality, and promote equity.

SWAYAM (Study Webs of Active –Learning for Young Aspiring Minds): Under this plan, professors from centrally supported institutes such as IITs, IIMs, and centrally funded universities will give online courses to our country’s inhabitants. All courses will be made available for free. A modest cost will be charged if the learner desires a Verified Certificate. At least one crore pupils are projected to profit from this initiative over the next two to three years.

The National E-Library is envisioned as an online platform that will democratise access to information by ensuring the digital availability of high-quality content from central universities and renowned educational institutions. Students, working professionals, and researchers across the country can quickly access the content via laptops, smart phones, and tablets.

Initiatives Underway

In June 2017, a new committee was formed to create a new education policy from scratch. Prakash Javadekar, the Union Minister for Human Resource Development, has pledged that the country will have a new education strategy in place before the 2019 elections.

Additionally, the Ministry of Human Resource Development is drafting legislation to establish a Higher Education Regulatory Council that will consolidate all existing regulatory bodies such as the UGC, AICTE, and NCTE.

Additionally, the Government received cabinet approval to establish the National Testing Agency (NTA) and has already nominated its head. The NTA will serve as a centralised testing agency for all entrance exams for higher education.

Implementing pan-India reforms in a democratic country like India with such a diverse population is a difficult endeavour due to the country’s unique political, economic, and social issues. The measures listed above indicate that education reform is one of the Indian government’s key concerns. Continuous efforts have been made to properly restructure India’s education system in order to ensure equitable access to education for all.

Thus, Student Development is amazing and reaching new heights under the leadership of Narendra Modi, Chief Minister of Gujarat and Prime Minister of India.

Helped Modi when he was Gujarat CM: Sharad

Amid vicious criticism of him by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the Lok Sabha poll campaign, NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Thursday revealed that he had helped Modi when the latter was the Gujarat chief minister.

Talking to media persons, Pawar Pawar said that he had helped Modi tackle the agrarian crisis in Gujarat when the latter was the Chief Minister in that state.

“Modi used to come to me with the problems of the agriculture sector and even took me to Gujarat. Once he wanted to visit Israel so I took him there also.  I am not concerned about whatever Modi says Narendra Modi says now,” Pawar said.

A four-time Maharashtra Chief Minister and former defence Minister in the PV Narasimha Rao government, Pawar was the Union Agriculture Minister in the Dr Manmohan Singh-headed Congress-led UPA government.

Modi was the Chief Minister of Gujarat from 2001 to 2014 before he became the Prime Minister of the BJP-led NDA government.

It may be recalled that Modi – speaking at an election rally at Madha in western Maharashtra had slammed Pawar by saying that the NCP chief had miserably failed as the Union Agriculture Minister. Modi had also claimed that Pawar had failed to keep his 2009 Lok Sabha poll promise of providing water to the people of Solapur.

Later addressing an election in Pune, Modi had hit out at Pawar without naming him.   “There is a ‘bhatakti aatma’ (wandering soul) in Maharashtra… If he does not manage to succeed, he spoils others’ good work. Maharashtra has been a victim of it,” Modi had said. Modi’s comment had generated considerable sympathy among the people for senior Pawar in the run-up to Lok Sabha polls in Baramati.

Later on Modi and Pawar had exchanged barbs between them. In a sharp retaliation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s criticism about his “inability” to manage his family, NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Saturday wondered as to “when did Modi take care of his own family” and said the condition of the latter's family “is a matter of serious concern”.

Pawar had taken a swipe at Modi for the latter’s recent comment made in a television interview that “when Pawar cannot manage his own family, how can he manage Maharashtra?” by saying: “When did Modi manage or take care of his family? I do not want to stoop to that level… The condition of his family is a matter of serious concern. I avoid making personal comments…. But, the Prime Minister does not believe in this…”

On Modi’s comment on how and why Pawar who criticised him as being “Putin in the making” received the Padma Vibhushan honour from his government, Pawar said: “When we were in the government, we had honoured the leaders from different political parties who had made notable contributions to the country. The awards like Padma are national honours. They do not belong to any political party. The Padma award is not Modi’s personal property. The BJP does not have copyright over these honours”.

Averring that his faith in Modi was waning, Pawar said: “Modi had said many things during his election speeches in the past. But, he has not implemented them. He keeps making casual comments without application of mind. That’s my faith in him going down”.

On the Prime Minister’s criticism of his predecessor about the Dr Manmohan Singh government’s policies in the past, Pawar said: “Modi used to criticise Dr Manmohan Singh’s policies bitterly in the past, but he is implementing the same policies. The speciality of Dr Manmohan Singh used to work quietly without talking about things he was doing and he used to produce results. But, in the case of Modi, he spends a lot of time criticising others. People have begun to understand Modi’s style of functioning”.

Later in the day, while addressing an election rally at Purandar in Pune district for Opposition NCP-Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) candidate Supriya Sule from Baramati  Lok Sabha constituency,  Pawar slammed Modi, saying that Modi was totally different from the best of Prime Ministers like Indira Gandhi, Narasimha Rao and Dr Manmohan Singh.

“The country has seen many Prime Ministers. I myself have seen many Prime Ministers, worked with some. After independence, we have not seen the work of a prime minister like Jawaharlal Nehru, but we read and learned about his work, he worked to give direction to this country. In his later times a gentleman like Lal Bahadur Shastri became the Prime Minister of the country and created a new history,” he said.

“Subsequently, Indira Gandhi not only worked hard to alleviate the sufferings of the poor but also taught a lesson to Pakistan. After Pakistan’s attack Indira Gandhi retaliated and divided the country into two. After that Pakistan did not rise again. Later we have had prime ministers like Narasimha Rao and Dr Manmohan Singh with whom I had worked,” Pawar said. “Among all the Prime Ministers that the country has had, Modi is totally different. Thanks to him, the condition of farmers has become miserable. They are in distress. He has contributed to high inflation in the country,” Pawar said.

Pawar --whom Modi had criticised at his election rally at Madha in western Maharashtra early this week saying that the NCP chief had miserably failed as the Union Agriculture Minister – charged that the current Prime Minister had badly managed Agriculture in the country.

“When we were in power, the management of agriculture was in the hands of our people. After 10 years of Mr. Modi's arrival, the management of agriculture is in the hands of BJP. When I was in charge of agriculture, we increased the procurement rate of paddy by Rs 138 per quintal, and during Modi's tenure, it was increased by Rs 66 quintal,” Pawar said.

“The procurement price of wheat was increased by Rs 122 per quintal during my tenure, while during Modi Saheb's time it was increased by Rs 62. The procurement price of sugarcane was increased by Rs 187 per quintal during my tenure, while it was increased by Rs 50 during Modi Saheb's tenure,” the NCP chief said

“The procurement price of cotton rose by Rs 114 during my tenure and rose by Rs 78 during BJP's tenure The price of maize increased by Rs 159 during my time, while in 10 years of BJP it was Rs 59 per quintal. I am giving you these comparative figures because the Modi government did not pay adequate remunerative prices to the farmers in the country,” Pawar said.

Three Gujarat BJP MLAs send letters voicing concerns over functioning of government officials

The BJP flag used for representational purposes only.

AHMEDABAD: Controversies are emerging within the Gujarat BJP soon after the Lok Sabha elections in the state. Three BJP MLAs have voiced their dissatisfaction regarding the working of the state government through formal letters.

Kumar Kanani, the MLA from the Varachha area of Surat, was the first to raise concerns about the government immediately after the elections. In a letter to the Surat collector on May 14th, Kanani expressed his dissatisfaction with the arrangements for obtaining income and caste certificates at the collector's office.

"After the Class 10 and Class 12 results were out, a large number of students queued up to get income and caste certificates.. but only a limited number of tokens were distributed, leaving many of them frustrated. Agents worked along with office operators, took money and arranged for the certificates within two hours."

The BJP MLA in his letter alleged that agents were operating illegally within the government office.

Meanwhile, in a letter addressed to the Chief Minister, BJP MLA from Junagadh Sanjay Kordia has questioned the slow progress and beautification efforts of Narsingh Lake in Junagadh. He expressed concerns over government contractors and officials not being responsive.

Speaking to TNIE, the first-time legislator said, "In a letter to Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, I mentioned that the work on Narsingh Lake in Junagadh has been ongoing for the last two years. Its completion deadline was in April, yet only 60 per cent of the first phase has been completed."

"Last time, inlet water entered residential areas due to the contractor's negligence during the monsoon. Today, a year has passed, but work on the inlet has not started. If the work is not expedited, we will face the same issues as last year during the rains," he said.

"I have written to the Chief Minister to expedite the work. It seems either the contractors are not working or they are ignoring the officials. I have raised this issue three or four times with the officials, but my concerns have not been addressed. Despite my submissions, there has been no impact," Koradia claimed.

Koradia had previously alleged corruption in construction activities along the Junagadh river banks in 2023. He had also written to the Chief Minister demanding an investigation into the matter.

Another BJP MLA Sanjay Singh Mahida, from Mahudha assembly constituency in Gujarat, has written a letter alleging that "the Taluka Development Officer is making arbitrary purchases, and the RO plants and water coolers allocated to primary schools are of inferior quality."

'Biggest Allegation Against Me That I Own 250 Pairs Of Clothes': PM Modi

PM Modi revealed the the biggest allegation he faced in his political career.

Often the opposition target for his sartorial choices, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said the biggest allegation he faced in his political career was that he owned 250 pairs of clothes.

In an interview to PTI, PM Modi said the allegation was levelled by Congress leader and former Gujarat chief minister Amarsinh Chaudhary and which was countered by him at a public meeting.

"I asked the people whether they wanted a chief minister who stole Rs 250 crore or one who had 250 pairs of clothes. The people of Gujarat responded in one voice that a chief minister with 250 pairs of clothes will be fine," PM Modi said, adding that the opposition never garnered any courage to level accusations.

Recollecting the incident during his tenure as Gujarat chief minister, PM Modi said he accepted Mr Chaudhary's accusations at a public meeting but asserted that the former chief minister had got his numbers wrong.

"That day I had a public meeting, where I said that I accept this accusation, but either the zero (in 250) is wrong, or the number two is wrong. Still I accept the accusation," PM Modi said.

PM Modi's Four Proposers

The BJP has won Varanasi eight times since 1991, with only RK Mishra of the Congress winning the seat in 2004. Varanasi will vote in the seventh and final phase of this Lok Sabha 2024 election on June 1.

The four proposers of Modi for his nomination were Pandit Ganeshwar Shastri, a member of the Brahmin community, Baijnath Patel, an old RSS volunteer belonging to the OBC community, Lalchand Kushwaha, another OBC community member and Sanjay Sonkar, who comes from the Dalit community.

The other leaders from BJP and its allies who attended Modi's nomination filing were Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar , Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav. RLD Chief Jayant Chaudhary, LJP leader Chirag Paswan, Apna Dal (S) President Anupriya Patel, and SBSP President Om Prakash Rajbhar were also present.

The significance of 11.40 am

The PM chose to file his nomination papers between 11.40 am and 12 noon. The timing has an auspicious significance. There was a coincidence between Pushya Nakshatra and Ganga Saptami on May 14.

Astrologer Pandit Rishi Dwivedi told Hindustan Times that the scriptures say the combination is there due to the positioning of the planets. “It is believed that doing any work on this day leads to the fulfilment of one's wish. If any work is done in Pushya Nakshatra, its completion is considered certain," he said.
