CREATIVE THINKING AND PROBLEM SOLVING
Recap from grade 10
‘Creative’ means to be able to think of something new and original.
Creative thinking is an essential tool for businesses leaders as it contributes to the overall success of a business. It helps to solve problems, respond to threats of competition and to remain a leader in the field.
Creativity in business can help you to:
· Think of a completely new business idea
· Improve an existing product in a unique way
· Think of better ways to serve your customers
· Attract new customers
· Solve problems that your customers might experience.
Problem solving
· A problem occurs when things are not going as they should.
· Some problems, such as natural disasters, we cannot predict.
· Other problems develop over a period of time and are predictable.
· Monitoring the performance of business helps to recognise problems.
Problem solving skills in a business context:
Problems within a business environment must be solved as soon as they are detected. Constant changes in the market impact on business operations and businesses must adapt to them quickly and creatively. There is always space for improving systems to increase productivity, save on cost and increase market share. Creative thinking can help to solve problems successfully.
‘Problem solving skills refers to our ability to solve problems in an effective and timely manner without any barriers. It involves being able to identify and define the problem, generating alternative solutions, evaluating and selecting the best alternative, and implementing the selected solution’.
When faced with a problem, businesses follow a cycle:
1. Identify problem
2. Define problem
3. Formulate strategy
4. Implement strategy
5. Allocate resources
6. Monitor strategy
7. Evaluate
In step 2 and 3, the need for creative thinking arises as the business:
· Has to define the problem and look at causes as well as all possible solutions (through brainstorming) to the identified problem.
· The best solution identified needs to be evaluated.
