'Bhagavanth Kesari' movie review Balakrishna shines in this reimagined masala entertainer

YouTube screengrab from the trailer of 'Bhagavanth Kesari' starring Nandamuri Balakrishna.

At the heart of Bhagavanth Kesari lies the relationship between Vijji (Sreeleela) and Bhagavanth (Balakrishna). Joining the list of jailers & their children across masala cinema in 2023 (a happy set of coincidences, I assume), Vijji, the daughter of a jailer played by Sarathkumar, grows in the foster care of Bhagavanth after her father’s death. We do not try to guess Bhagavanth’s age (why would we do any such thing while watching Balayya onscreen) but we do get an answer in the present-day portions of the film when Balayya declares he is 50. The fact that this line was met with cheers across the theatre is worth taking note of, with regard to understanding how to write roles for our senior actors in this day and age.

We also learn about Katyayani’s (Kajal Aggarwal) age early on in the film. She is in her mid-30s here though, not having received the decade-long concession Balayya gets. Despite being saddled with the most insignificant and poorly written role in the film — with her “I am a psychologist” shtick being an unenthusiastic encore from Catherine Tresa’s character in Iddarammayilatho — the actor’s romantic angle with Balakrishna is largely a relief. This is not a romantic film, and the presence of a love story in a film is not as damningly mandatory as it was, say, in the 90s. So Anil Ravipudi uses Kajal as a glorified prop, but not before mining this faux romance for a few laughs.

balakrishna latest movie review

From the winky-eyed humour evident in Balakrishna calling Kajal “aunty” to the dark comedy seen in Balakrishna killing a guy because he did not like his teeth to a bunch of political sidekicks keeping a female politician in their ragtag group only because she speaks English, the comedy in Bhagavanth Kesari is subdued but interesting. The director also works some of Balayya’s internet/fan culture jokes with equal amounts of silliness and restraint (“jubilee hills, banjara hills, maa chicha kodithe medical bills” made me chuckle). Anil Ravipudi is also more calm this time around. He knows that the star he is working with is larger than life from the get-go. And it is with this assurance he surges forth and designs Bhagavanth as someone self aware and emotional, which is rarely what we get to see in films like these. Atleast one half of his character works that way, while the other half plays to the gallery without blinking.

Bhagavanth Kesari, or atleast one-half of him in the film, is easily one of the most humble roles of Balakrishna in recent times. The world he is from, where he calls himself adavi bidda a lot, is not exactly novel (think Pawan Kalyan in Bheemla Nayak and NTR Jr in RRR), but it achieves its own grooves and meaning in the presence of a new star. There was a certain apprehension I felt about Telangana being used as a mere backdrop, and though Bhagavanth Kesari does not hold a candle to the kind of Telangana-centric films we have seen from filmmakers native to the region, it also feels validating to know that Telangana is now a part of a film with the most mainstream star at its helm. Anil Ravipudi commits to the new milieu, and the casting of Telangana actors like Jeevan and Muralidhar Goud, who have so far featured in smaller films, was a heartening sight.

A major part of Bhagavanth’s heroism lies in the way he strives to make Vijji (Sreeleela) join the armed forces. He pushes away a marriage proposal for Vijji because the prospective father-in-law is dismissive of her aspirations. Bhagavanth also schools an army school instructor equally dismissive of female applicants in his academy. There is a touching (though somewhat conveniently shoehorned) monologue on good touch and bad touch. There is also a line about how girls need to be raised like lions, not deers.

A major part of Bhagavanth training Vijji is also to make sure she loses her anxiety and stops getting panic attacks. One can debate whether this Dangal-meets-The Accountant arc fits the norms of textbook feminism or not. But after six back-to-back successful films, most of which involved parodying women senselessly, to see Anil Ravipudi use the platform his success has given him to put forth this message, is something else. Bhagavanth Kesari is middling at its action portions, a place where masala films are at their most gung-ho mode, but the impact of its serene disruption of traditional masculinity, not to mention its reinvention of Balakrishna will stay on. Here’s hoping there is more of them, wherever they are coming from.

Bhagavanth Kesari Movie Review: Balakrishna shines in this reimagined masala entertainer

Rating: ( 3 / 5)

Between the gulf of masala cinema and new age masala cinema, it is not hard to determine which film earns a place in the latter vis-a-vis a film that is relegated in the former. Though this would not have been an issue in an ideal world, seeing whether our sterling senior stars can accept an age-appropriate role has largely been the determining factor behind classifying a film in either category. Another factor behind deciding whether a film has sensibly updated itself with the times or not can be seen in the way a certain type of crowd-pleasing creepiness, a hallmark of hypermasculine cinema, has been done away with or not. Bhagavanth Kesari , despite emphatically ticking off the aforementioned criteria, is not what one can easily term a "new age masala cinema". But in terms of its sheer novelty, breaking the existing moulds of Balayya and Anil Ravipudi, Bhagavanth Kesari is nothing short of a breath of fresh air.

Cast - Nandamuri Balakrishna, Sreeleela, Kajal Aggarwal, Arjun Rampal  Director - Anil Ravipudi At the heart of the film lies the relationship between Vijji (Sreeleela) and Bhagavanth (Balakrishna). Joining the list of jailers & their children across masala cinema in 2023 (a happy set of coincidences, I assume), Vijji, the daughter of a jailer played by Sarathkumar, grows in the foster care of Bhagavanth after her father's death. So Anil Ravipudi uses Kajal as a glorified prop, but not before mining this faux romance for a few laughs. Bhagavanth Kesari has been billed as a departure of sorts for Anil Ravipudi, who is known to revel in out-and-out goofy comedy. While there is enough drama in this film, the filmmaker's comic touches in Bhagavanth Kesari render the film to be a memorable one. From the winky-eyed humour evident in Balakrishna calling Kajal "aunty" to the dark comedy seen in Balakrishna killing a guy because he did not like his teeth to a bunch of political sidekicks keeping a female politician in their ragtag group only because she speaks English, the comedy in Bhagavanth Kesari is subdued but interesting. The director also works some of Balayya's internet/fan culture jokes with equal amounts of silliness and restraint ("jubilee hills, banjara hills, chicha kodithe medical bills" made me chuckle).  Two years ago, a lot of us wondered how a star as huge as Vijay could place his trust in Lokesh Kanagaraj in a film like Master where he is seen to be directly responsible for the death of two children. Star vehicles rarely allow for such admissions of guilt and vulnerability, lest they come in the way of sheer hagiography masquerading as character design. This is more or less the same kind of doubt I had when I saw Anil Ravipudi design Balayya's Bhagavanth Kesari, for the character is so surprisingly different from the ones we have seen so far. You can't help but wonder how the actor approved this script and why the actor approved it at this point in time. One cannot help but praise the actor for trusting the director. There is a calm assurance in Anil Ravipudi this time. Anil Ravipudi commits to the new milieu, and the casting of Telangana actors like Jeevan and Muralidhar Goud, who have so far featured in smaller films, was a heartening sight. In a film that does its bit towards glorifying its male lead, it is the somewhat unsubtle glorification of the current Telangana government that sticks out. Be it in the display of the Raidurg high rises that the film's antagonist (Arjun Rampal) resides in or a montage of Sreeleela training right outside the newly built Secretariat building, Ambedkar statue, and the Telangana Martyrs memorial, the signs of a new, shiny Telangana are displayed prominently for all to see. Despite the presence of a gory flashback involving cinema-friendly police brutality and a handful of action sequences involving a cutout, a bus and a wine opener, a major part of Bhagavanth's heroism lies in the way he strives to make Vijji (Sreeleela) join the armed forces. He pushes away a marriage proposal for Vijji because the prospective father-in-law is dismissive of her aspirations. Bhagavanth also schools an army school instructor equally dismissive of female applicants in his academy. Veera Simha Reddy Movie Review: Balakrishna packs a punch in this template action entertainer

Director gopichandh malineni’s veera simha reddy, starring balakrishna, honey rose and shruti haasan, is a formulaic action entertainer with a heavy dose of action. the story, however, has nothing new to offer, says our review..

Balakrishna's Veera Simha Reddy hit the theatres on January 12.

  • Veera Simha Reddy hit the theatres on January 12.
  • Balakrishna plays two roles in the film.
  • The commercial entertainer is directed by Gopichandh Malineni.

Release Date: 12 Jan, 2023

Nandamuri Balakrishna is back with yet another dual act after the enjoyable Akhanda. With Veera Simha Reddy, he treats his fans to another fun commercial entertainer, which also reminds us of old films with similar storylines. Does Veera Simha Reddy have enough meat to impress the audience? Here, we find out!

Jai (Balakrishna) and his mother Meenakshi (Honey Rose) have a car dealership business and a restaurant, respectively. Jai meets Sandhya (Shruti Haasan) and falls in love with her. When Sandhya’s father asks Jai to bring his parents to finalise the wedding, he gets to learn that his father Veera Simha Reddy (Balakrishna again) is alive. However, when Veera Simha Reddy comes to Turkey, things take a drastic turn. The rest of the film shows us Veera Simha Reddy and Honey Rose’s past and why they aren’t together.

Director Gopichandh Malineni’s Veera Simha Reddy is as formulaic as it can get. If you have a two-hero subject with the brother-sister sentiment, you get a set of clichéd moments as you have seen in films so far. All those moments (and more) are part of Veera Simha Reddy and that’s what makes it fun too. It’s a delight to see Nandamuri Balakrishna owning the screen even though the roles are similar to what he had done in his previous films.

Be it the over-the-top action sequences or his punch dialogues, they are aplenty in Veera Simha Reddy. In an action scene, Balakrishna strikes and two men fold hands in mid-air. These are action blocks that are enjoyable, typical of what can be expected out of a Balayya film. Among the two roles, Veera Simha Reddy's characterisation was etched well. And Balakrishna essayed both roles with such swag.

Veera Simha Reddy also has some strong political dialogues, which brought a lot of cheer among the audience.Balayya is seen talking about his father NTR and his lineage. And then, there’s Balayya praising himself!

That said, Veera Simha Reddy’s story has nothing new to offer. We get the brother-sister sentiment and how revenge clouds one’s judgement. There’s objectification of women and the problematic male gaze throughout the film and the songs as well. Seeing Honey Rose playing mother to Jai (Balakrishna), the odd pairing is sticking up like a sore thumb. Even though Rose’s makeup suggested that she’s old enough to be a mother, it didn’t add any novelty.

Shruti Haasan’s role could have been done by anyone. The so-called comedy sequences are as old as the hills and did not bring in any laughs. And her character vanishes after the initial half an hour. Comparatively, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar gets a meatier role as Veera Simha Reddy’s sister. She has a full-fledged character arc and has done her best to stay true to her role. Similarly, Duniya Vijay as the antagonist looked deadly. However, his role lacked the punch that was needed to take on two Balakrishnas.

Veera Simha Reddy is a film that reeks of clichéd ideas. While most of them work, the lack of depth in the story made it an average affair.

Nandamuri Balakrishna came up with another release this year after his Veera Simha Reddy was released for Sankranthi. Balayya joined hands with the F2 director Anil Ravipudi who is known for making entertaining films. The trailer is promising with Balayya in an aged look and Sree Leela being trained to join the military. Kajal Aggarwal and Bollywood actor Arjun Rampal appear to be playing important roles. The director also says there is a surprise look of Balayya in the film. The movie was released today in theaters and let us see what Bhagavanth Kesari has. Here is the review from one of the US premieres.

What Is It About?

An ex-prisoner Bhagavanth Kesari (Balakrishna) becomes the guardian of Vijji Papa (Sreeleela) after her police officer father’s sudden demise. Bhagavanth wants her to join the military as per her father’s wish, but Vijji is against it. Vijji falls in trouble due to a conspiracy in which a brutal businessman Rahul Sanghvi (Arjun Rampal) is involved. Bhagavanth Kesari locks horns with Rahul Sanghvi, who also is his rival from the past. What happened between Rahul Sanghvi and Bhagavanth Kesari and how the conflict ended, is all about Bhagavanth Kesari.

Performances

Balakrishna attempts a role different from his usual choice. An aged role with temper and humor blended is what Balayya enthralls us as Bhagavanth Kesari. His Telangana accent and the dialogues have come out well for Balayya’s role. Balakrishna’s look suited him well.

Sreeleela is an apt choice for the role she was given. She looked mostly passive in the first half but picked up well in the latter half. Kajal Aggarwal was seen in a limited role and she did not have much to do as a psychologist. Arjun Rampal is a new villain for Telugu movies, but his role did not look special as a lot of Bollywood villains have been doing similar roles.

Technicalities

Bhgavanth Kesari songs are a setback. The background music is ordinary until the pre-climax and climax episodes. Action blocks have the elevating music raising the bar. The Cinematography is good with the color tone and some excellent frames. Action episodes were shot well. The screenplay could have been better.

Balakrishna Sreeleela Dialogues Action episodes

Thumbs Down

Weak villainy Flat Narrative In First 40 min Songs

The trend of senior heroes taking age-appropriate roles is being liked by the audience of late. Balakrishna too attempted it but in his own style and also proved he is a director’s actor.

There were many movies that had heroes going to any extent for the family and for the promises they made. Bhagavanth Kesari is one of them but Balayya’s new characterization and him giving scope for another role to have equal importance is what makes this movie different.

The first half of Bhagavanth Kesari goes with a flat narrative most of the time. Though the establishment was quick, the usual highs in a Balayya movie go missing here until the pre-interval. The track between Balayya and Kajal is boring. Movie takes off from oochakota episode and maintains steady narrative until intermission. The pre-interval and interval episodes came out well.

Second half is well written and executed, there are many high points in second half. It starts with a high note and an action-packed appearance of Balakrishna. Flashback episode is really good. The surprise looks and scenes around it were done well. The nostalgic elements with the vintage Balayya’s background music add a punch. The dialogues need a special mention as Anil shows Balayya equally powerful with dialogues with what he does in action blocks. They are not over-top dialogues but good enough to subtly show the baddies their place. The bus fight is decent.

The confrontation scenes of Bhagavanth Kesari and Rahul Sanghvi are not so powerful. The villain thread could have been different from the monotonous drug ships, corrupt politicians, party funds, and so on.

However, Bhagavanth Kesari does not have typical Balayya-movie stuff. There are no big twists, neither the goosebumps moments all over. Only the action episodes with the apt background music might enthrall the fans in the second half. The good touch-bad touch episodes were narrated well. A few other Sreeleela-Balayya emotional scenes and action scenes are impressive.

Overall, Bhagavanth Kesari offers an ordinary story with a fresh characterization of Balakrishna. It is neither a typical Balayya-style movie nor an Anil Ravipudi mark movie, but a blend of both which could attract a family audience along with the fans.

Bottomline: Decent Family Movie – Message Included

Rating: 2.75/5

balakrishna latest movie review

During his speech, Balakrishna said, “Only with a few people in the industry do I share good bonding, and one among them is Vishwak Sen. He always tries to offer something new to the audience. Krishna Chaitanya impressed with his previous films Rowdy Fellow and Chal Mohan Ranga. I am sure Gangs of Godavari will also entertain the audience.”

Balakrishna added, “Mokshagna is entering the industry soon. I always tell him to get inspired by people like Vishwak Sen, Siddhu Jonnalagadda, and Adivi Sesh. Actors should adapt themselves to audiences’ changing tastes and consistently deliver new-age content. Very soon, people will witness our (Vishwak Sen and Balakrishna) combo. We will announce it very soon.”
