From a young age I have been fascinated by the concept of colour and, for me, this quotation foregrounds the importance of colour and mixing in art. I am particularly interested in the way in which mixing colour can function as medium for conveying different ideas through artistic matter. Throughout my education I have been preoccupied with the connection between the mixing of colour and the evoking of particular emotions. The prospect of embarking upon a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art excites me as I feel that it would allow me the perfect opportunity to further explore the aspects of Fine Art that interest me most, whilst developing my own personal artistic style.

I have a prolific portfolio of related work experience which has helped me develop my time management skills, whilst confirming my passion for Fine Art. For over two years I worked as a sales assistant and art director in an art based retail environment. Furthermore, in this position I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to organise and supervise the numerous art exhibitions that were offered. This not only gave me the opportunity to exercise and develop my organisational skills, but also gave me a valuable insight into the world of Fine Art. This insight confirmed my passion for the subject and further motivated me in my quest to obtain a degree in Fine Art. This degree is particularly important to me as in the future I hope to be able to combine it with my work experience and start a career as a Curator. I have spent over three years at my most recent job, a Catering Assistant, this demonstrates my excellent work ethic and commitment. I attended High School in 2003 with particularly high marks in both English Language and Fine Art. I have also obtained a GCSE in English conversation. Attending university in a foreign country is particularly important to me as if successful, I would be the first person in my family to study abroad. Furthermore, I feel that my previous experiences in the British education system foreshadow the way in which I am able to adapt to new conditions of study, thus highlighting my versatility.

It is clear that my passion for Fine Art extends beyond the classroom: last summer I took part in numerous competitions offered in London, including the ‘Royal Summer Exhibition’ and the ‘Inspired’ competition offered by the Victoria and Albert Museum. These experiences have been extremely useful as they have taught me the importance of producing work with respect to deadlines, a skill which is invaluable in an undergraduate environment. Entering such competitions has also allowed me to develop my aesthetic eye and experiment with different artistic techniques. I have drawn inspiration from artists such as Naum Gabo, Jackson Pollock and Hazel Brook and I would relish the opportunity to explore their work further.

In addition to achieving a National College of Open Network level three diploma in art and design, I am currently enrolled on a Foundation Degree course. I am intend to finish this in March 2012 and I am predicted to gain a higher degree level mark. Furthermore, my Foundation course has not only allowed me to develop pieces of Fine Art from scratch but also helped me to work in a group and co-operate with my classmates. Regular critique sessions with my peers have highlighted the importance of constructive criticism, whilst honing my editing skills. What you put into your statement, and how, is really crucial - here's our advice on how to make your statement really count.

Research, research research!

We want to know why you want to study the course you've chosen, how it'll enrich your learning and future career, and also why you think UCA is an ideal place for you. So it's really important you do plenty of research to support your statement. Ask yourself the following questions as you go, and use what you find to build your statement.

  • What are your interests in the subject area? Why do you want to come and study the course?
  • Why do you think you’re the ideal applicant for this course? Include any skills or work you have done that supports this.
  • Why would you like to study at UCA? How do you think you’ll benefit from joining our community?
  • What is it particularly about UCA and the course here which appeals to you?

Foundation Diploma in Art, Design & Media Practice

This accredited course prepares you for the study of art and design at degree level. You'll gain an understanding of visual communication, three-dimensional design, fashion and fine art. You'll explore a range of art forms, media and techniques, and begin to develop your own creative style. 

You'll be taught by a broad range of tutors who all work within the creative industry. These will engage you in a critical investigation of your work, progression aims and ambitions. You'll take part in regular research and drawing trips; studio, gallery and museum visits to London also form part of the course.

What you will study

The Foundation Diploma in Art & Design course focuses on four main areas: 

  • Visual communication - graphic design, advertising, packaging, bookbinding, art direction, social design, film, illustration, animation, model making, curation
  • Three-dimensional design - architecture, landscape architecture, interior, product, furniture, prop and set design
  • Fashion and fabrication - menswear, womenswear, costume, fashion photography and constructed textiles
  • Fine art - painting, mixed media, printmaking, installation, sculpture, performance and photography

Places are limited and the number of applicants is extremely high. We expect applicants to have attended one of our open days . You'll hear more about the course, meet staff, visit the ground-breaking workshops and studio spaces at our Knights Park campus, where many art and design courses are based, and receive guidelines about how to apply and what to include in your portfolio.

Course content

The course runs from September to June and is divided into three parts.

Part 1 - Rotation

Introduces the principles, techniques and demands of the art and design industry. A six-week rotation of workshops examines each of the four areas. This helps you understand them and make an informed choice on what you want to study.

Part 2 - Specialism

Marks the start of your specialism. You'll explore your subject choice in detail and broaden your technical and conceptual skills. You'll also prepare your portfolio for degree-level application.

Part 3 - Final Major Project

You will complete a nine-week project using the knowledge, skills and confidence you have acquired. The project culminates with a public exhibition.

This Pearson BTEC Foundation Diploma in Art, Design & Media Practice is split into the Exploratory Phase (Rotation and Specialism) and Confirmatory Phase (Final Major Project), which share the same assessment criteria. All students will be provided with the Foundation Student Dictionary, which contains clear details of the course structure and its assessment criteria.

Please make sure you download and carefully read our guidance for applying for the Foundation Diploma in Art, Design & Media Practice document (PDF).

You will need to follow the instructions in that document to first create your Dropbox account before completing and submitting your online application as you will need to copy and paste your Dropbox account URL weblink into the online application.

This will allow you to create your Dropbox; fully complete your online application with your Dropbox URL link and upload important supporting documents (i.e. personal statement, reference and completed academic and English language qualifications) to your online application form and submit your application as soon as possible and in plenty of time prior to the application deadline.

Once you submit your online application, you will then be able to upload your portfolio images to your existing Dropbox account by the application deadline.

All applications and Dropbox portfolios will then be reviewed by the admissions tutors after the application deadline.

Teaching and assessment

Scheduled learning and teaching on this course includes timetabled activities including lectures, seminars and small group tutorials. It may also include critiques, project work, studio practice and performance, digital labs, workshops, and placements.

Guided independent study (self-managed time)

Outside of the scheduled learning and teaching hours, you will learn independently through self-study which will involve reading articles and books, working on projects, undertaking research, preparing for and completing your work for assessments. Some independent study work may need to be completed on-campus, as you may need to access campus-based facilities such as studios and labs.

Dedicated personal tutor

When you arrive, we'll introduce you to your personal tutor . This is the member of academic staff who will provide academic guidance, be a support throughout your time at Kingston and show you how to make the best use of all the help and resources that we offer at Kingston University.

Your workload

A course is made up of modules, and each module is worth a number of credits. You must pass a given number of credits in order to achieve the award you registered on, for example 360 credits for a typical undergraduate course or 180 credits for a typical postgraduate course. The number of credits you need for your award is detailed in the programme specification which you can access from the link at the bottom of this page.

One credit equates to 10 hours of study. Therefore 120 credits across a year (typical for an undergraduate course) would equate to 1,200 notional hours. These hours are split into scheduled and guided. On this course, the percentage of that time that will be scheduled learning and teaching activities is shown below for each year of study. The remainder is made up of guided independent study.

  • Year 1:  18% scheduled learning and teaching
  • Year 2:  16% scheduled learning and teaching

The exact balance between scheduled learning and teaching and guided independent study will be informed by the modules you take.

Your course will primarily be delivered in person. It may include delivery of some activities online, either in real time or recorded.

Your timetable

Your individualised timetable is normally available to students within 48 hours of enrolment. Whilst we make every effort to ensure timetables are as student-friendly as possible, scheduled learning and teaching can take place on any day of the week between 9am and 6pm. For undergraduate students, Wednesday afternoons are normally reserved for sports and cultural activities, but there may be occasions when this is not possible. Timetables for part-time students will depend on the modules selected.

Class sizes

30 students are in each Rotation group during Part 1 of the course. There is no limitation on group sizes when students are choosing Specialism.

All members of staff are practising artists and designers, which means their teaching includes up-to-date professional experience. They can tell you what life in industry is really like and they'll give you guidance on how to balance creating inspiring, challenging work with meeting the needs of your client.

Many of our tutors are highly successful, award-winning artists and designers. For example, staff members have won national illustration and D&AD design awards.

Fees and funding, 2025/26 fees for this course, home students.

Students aged under 19 on 31 August of the year of entry will not be charged a tuition fee. ( Please note : this fee waiver does not apply to students from the Channel Islands, who will have to pay the fee below).

Students aged 19 or over on 31 August of the year of entry will have to pay a tuition fee for the year. The fee for 2025/26 is £7,200 . You must make sure you are able to support yourself through the academic year and be able to pay tuition fees of £7,200 per annum .

Home applicants should note that this course is a further education course so student loans (for tuition and living costs) are not available for this course.

You will normally be charged the appropriate international fee which for 2025/26 is £16,500 for the Foundation Diploma in Art and Design.

2024/25 fees for this course

Students aged 19 or over on 31 August of the year of entry will have to pay a tuition fee for the year. The fee for 2024/25 is £6,900 . You must make sure you are able to support yourself through the academic year and be able to pay tuition fees of £6,900 per annum .

You will normally be charged the appropriate international fee which for 2024/25 is £15,900 for the Foundation Diploma in Art and Design.

Note for EU students: UK withdrawal from the European Union

The Government has recently announced that new students from the European Union and Swiss Nationals starting their course after August 2021 will no longer be eligible for a student loan in England for Undergraduate or Postgraduate studies from the 2021/22 academic year. This decision only applies to new EU students starting after 2021/22. If you are an existing/continuing EU student, you will continue to be funded until you graduate or withdraw from your course.

Additional costs

Depending on the programme of study, there may be extra costs that are not covered by tuition fees which students will need to consider when planning their studies. Tuition fees cover the cost of your teaching, assessment and operating University facilities such as the library, access to shared IT equipment and other support services. Accommodation and living costs are not included in our fees. 

Where a course has additional expenses, we make every effort to highlight them. These may include optional field trips, materials (e.g. art, design, engineering), security checks such as DBS, uniforms, specialist clothing or professional memberships.

Our libraries are a valuable resource with an extensive collection of books and journals as well as first-class facilities and IT equipment. You may prefer to buy your own copy of key textbooks, this can cost between £50 and £250 per year.

Computer equipment

There are open-access networked computers available across the University, plus laptops available to loan . You may find it useful to have your own PC, laptop or tablet which you can use around campus and in halls of residences. Free WiFi is available on each of the campuses. You may wish to purchase your own computer, which can cost from £100 to £3,000 depending on your course requirements.

Photocopying and printing

In the majority of cases written coursework can be submitted online. There may be instances when you will be required to submit work in a printed format. Printing, binding and photocopying costs are not included in your tuition fees, this may cost up to £100 per year.

Travel costs are not included in your tuition fees but we do have a free intersite bus service which links the campuses, Surbiton train station, Kingston upon Thames train station, Norbiton train station and halls of residence.

Upon acceptance of an offer, a materials fee of £280 is required to secure a place and pay for materials whilst you are on the course.

You'll use our dedicated Foundation studio spaces and facilities to experiment and explore new ways to push the boundaries of projects and open discourse across disciplines.

Collaborative and multi-disciplinary teamwork is actively encouraged between students.

Throughout the course, you'll be encouraged to explore different materials, processes and ideas through experimentation.

Although you'll be taught at Penrhyn Road, you'll also have access to the state-of-the-art workshop facilities at Knights Park, where many of our art and design degree courses are taught.

How do I apply?

You do not apply for any Foundation courses via UCAS. Applicants should apply online . We ask you to upload images of your work via a Dropbox link.

What is the student to staff ratio?

30 students to each member of staff.

Who will teach you and how often?

A passionate team of 22 permanent members of staff, plus over 30 visiting lecturers.

Is there a tutorial system?

Yes. We run regular tutorials during each project, both one-to-one and in groups with peers. Our small course means we have time to really get to know every student. In addition, all students are allocated a personal tutor to support their progression through UCAS onto degrees.

What is the relationship with the degree courses at Kingston School of Art?

Approximately 50% of our students progress to degree courses at KSA.

Throughout the year, we run joint projects, visit crits, hold workshops, and course leaders come to talk about their degrees at KSA.

How successful is your course in placing students onto degree courses?

100% of our students wanting to study at higher education gained places at the highest-quality institutions throughout the UK and abroad. Our strength is in placing the right student at the right institution for themselves as individuals. Therefore, we also support applications for alternative routes of study.

Do you have your own studios at Kingston School of Art?

Foundation is based in the 4th, 5th and 6th floors of the Tower Block at Penrhyn Road, with large open-plan studios for the exclusive use of our students. We also use libraries, 3D workshops, photography, animation, hackspace, computer and printmaking facilities at Knights Park, where students will work alongside degree students, which is extremely beneficial.

How many students do you accept onto the course?

We take 150 Home and 30 EU/International students each year. Last year, we had 1,605 applications, so it is competitive. We urge you to apply to additional courses as, sadly, we are unable to accommodate all students that apply to us.

Is there accommodation available?

Yes. Foundation students are eligible for University halls of residence. Applications are sent out by the University in early June. Students are encouraged to reply early to avoid disappointment.

Middle Mill Halls is located closest to the Foundation building. Seething Wells and Clayhill also seem popular with our students, and free University buses run to the campus.

Are there tuition fees?

Upon acceptance of an offer, a Materials Fee of £280 is required to secure a place and pay for materials while you are on the course.

Home students that are under 19 years old on the 31 August of the year of entry will not be charged a tuition fee.

Students aged 19 or over will have to pay a tuition fee for the year.

International/EU/Channel Islands students will be charged an International Fee.

As this course is a Further Education course, it is not eligible for student loans.

It helps admissions staff at the University decide whether to make you an offer. Some courses have many more applicants than places and there may be many students with good grades applying for the same course as you.

47 lines or 4,000 characters maximum – whichever comes first.

What to include

Your personal statement is your chance to stand out from the crowd. It is unique and individual to you, but some things to include are:

  • Enthusiasm and motivation – your passion for the course should be clear and relate to you and your experiences (eg projects, field trips or experiences at school that sparked your interest in your subject). 
  • Understanding of the subject – you need to show you have some knowledge and understanding, even if you have not studied the subject at high school or college. If you have done some reading about the subject, outside of school, mention this.
  • Academic prizes or scholarships – this will help you stand out and show evidence of your potential.
  • Career aspirations – even if you do not have clear career plans yet, you can show you have thought about your future career and how your chosen degree could help you achieve this.
  • Relevant work experience/voluntary activities – explain what skills you have gained from the experience, including skills that would be useful in your university studies. 
  • Non-academic interests – your hobbies (such as sports, baking or reading) show your personality and can be a chance to demonstrate different skills.
  • What you will contribute to the university community – we want to know what you can bring to Leeds, as well as what you want to get out of university life.

International and EU students

If you are a non-UK student, you should also mention:

  • Why you want to study in the UK.
  • Why you want to be an international student, rather than study in your own country.

What to avoid

  • Plagiarism (copying) – all statements will be checked for plagiarism. Your statement must be your own work so do not use templates. If you have applied before, check your personal statement is completely up to date and relevant to your current application.
  • Skills without examples – show how you have developed the skills you think you will need, don't just list them.
  • Listing subject knowledge – explain how your knowledge has helped you build career aspirations, choose your degree, or prepare for coming to university.
  • Repeating qualifications – don't repeat information covered elsewhere on the application. This uses up valuable space in your personal statement.
  • Short personal statement – make the most of the space you have. A short statement suggests you lack of passion or commitment to the course you are applying for.

Our top tips

  • Write your personal statement in MS Word (or similar) first, so you can check your spelling and grammar before you add it into your application.
  • Get someone else, like your tutor, family or friends, to read your statement to check for any errors and make suggestions before you submit it. You may need a few drafts before you are happy with the final version.
  • If English is not your first language, you could mention any opportunities you have had to use English (eg an English-speaking school or work with a company that uses English).
  • Use plain, clear English. Be careful with humour, quotes or anything unusual. The admissions tutor might not have the same sense of humour as you!
  • Don’t exaggerate. If you get an interview, you might be asked for more detail about what you have written.

Fine art personal statement example 1.

Languages have a talent of captivating me. There is such an assortment to written and spoken words, and the shapes of the characters. Language in itself is a form of art and is one which greatly inspires me. The bold colours and fluent lines of the Fauvist André Derain’s “The Turning Road at L’Estaque” expresses the passion of Italian, while Turkish is much better depicted by the chaos of sharp lines in the Cubist Marcel Duchamp’s “Nude Descending a Staircase”. Older languages like Latin inspire their descendants, in this case the European languages, just as Dadaism is a predecessor of Surrealism.

The time I have spent in my BTEC Foundation class has opened my eyes to the vast array of the art world and I am enjoying every moment of it. I have a newly found enthusiasm for analogue photography through the tactile use of the darkroom. I have worked with new media in my 3D kinaesthetic practice of clay. Throughout it all I have delved into mixed media to advance the standards of my illustrative work. The Foundation course has brought a fresh start to my life and through it I have become our Course Representative. I am looking forward to extending my knowledge in the variety of art forms available and experiencing them in greater detail than I have already. Through this I will be able to learn about my inner artist by expressing my ideas and maturing my practice whilst reinforcing the strength of my portfolio. I feel that studying Fine Art to a higher level will nurture my skills by means of confidence in my own opinions as well as developing my personal touch which differentiates me from other artists.

Alongside studying for my Foundation I have a part-time job in a pub and am part of the UCAN volunteer scheme which has taught me to manage my time efficiently and become organised. From my job I have learnt how to work quickly and effectively on a team under pressure by using my own initiative.

Before starting my Foundation, I visited the U.S. as my own form of a Vision Quest. Whilst in America I went to the Rochester Museum and Science Center where I studied Native Americans and the differences in creativity between tribes, such as the pottery of the Anasazi and the woven baskets of the Cherokee.

One thing that truly fascinates me is our ability of autosuggestion. These dominant thoughts play into our subconscious with the power to create irrational fear, limiting our life experience, whilst also having the power to cancel them out from placebos effects. Through autosuggestion we can become hypochondriacs in addition to a woman making herself believe she is pregnant to the point that her body begins to display symptoms. A person is fully able to turn their lives around by doing the well known act of looking in the mirror every morning and saying something positive about themselves

I wish to help others find peace within by revealing their unconscious mind through expressing themselves in creative therapy.
