Elementary Principal Cover Letter Sample

This client was looking for a new challenge as an elementary principal - this sample cover letter represents the applicant's strong ability to make decisions, promote values, and develop a top-notch school team.

This elementary school principal cover letter example showcases the client's education and credentials, and years of administrative and classroom expertise. Judith's leadership skills, relevant personality traits, and enthusiasm really stand out. Keywords such as staff development, faculty goals, multicultural awareness, and gender sensitivity will ensure the cover letter makes it past the scanner and to the human eye.

You will notice that the cover letter matches the principal resume sample in formatting, style, font, and borders. This ensures consistency between documents and makes for a visually pleasing, matching application package. The examples of the teachers and school administrators resume on this website are only a selected few styles/templates we use. When we design and write our clients' resume, the design, font, and formatting we use are diverse.

The content of each resume we write is extremely unique to the individual, we are NOT a 'resume mill' type resume writing company.

Teachers Resume Writing Process

The cover letter targeting an elementary administration position begins by highlighting Judith's years of experience, education credentials, and experience which will entice the reader to continue reading to find out more. We then go on to list her best skills as an administrator, as well as her past successes.

Using the two bullets to showcase leadership and administrative competence ensures the reader will notice these qualities, and be prompted to move on to Judith's resume. These two bullet points are very effective because they highlight her skills and experience without completely reiterating everything that is stated in the resume.

Repeating information is perhaps the biggest mistake that principals and other education professionals make when writing a cover letter. Cover letters are supposed to serve as a complement to your resume, describing your core competencies and passion for the job, not a mini resume. Although, you may repeat a few things, such as your degree and relevant certifications.

Instead of repeating similar information across multiple documents, take a couple of relevant accomplishments in your most relevant role and describe them in a little more detail. Add in specific facts if you can to quantify your achievements and make it easier for the reader to understand the full scope of your leadership accomplishments. If you are pursuing a school leadership position take the time to gather information regarding relevant achievements and skills.

Once again, whether you are wishing to secure a high school principal, middle school, head of school, or superintendent position show what makes you qualified to do the job. You can review many other cover letter examples on this website.

We then end the cover letter by providing information that is not in the resume at all. We describe her commitment to the students and staff that she serves by stating her educational philosophy. This helps a school to visualize what they can expect out of her leadership.

Lastly, the cover letter ends with the conclusion paragraph that states she will call to follow-up at a specified time. This is a great tactic that ensures future communication.

Jessica Perez, School Superintendent Watertown High School – Watertown City School District 200 9th St NE Watertown, SD 57201

Dear Ms. Perez,

I am writing to express my interest in the principal position at Watertown High School, as advertised. With a proven track record of driving academic excellence, fostering a positive learning environment and implementing innovative programs, I am confident in my ability to contribute to the continued success of Watertown High School.

In my previous role as principal at McKinley High School, I led initiatives that significantly improved student achievement. Over seven years, I successfully increased standardized test scores by an average of 15%, positioning the school in the top 10% of the district. These results were achieved through implementing data-driven instructional strategies, professional development programs for teachers and the introduction of targeted interventions for struggling students.

One of my key accomplishments was successfully implementing a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) program that led to a 20% increase in student enrollment and a 30% improvement in student engagement. This program enhanced the academic curriculum and provided students with real-world experiences through partnerships with local businesses and community organizations.

Furthermore, I am adept at managing and optimizing school budgets. I have successfully reduced administrative costs by 15% through strategic resource allocation and vendor negotiation. This allowed us to redirect funds toward critical educational resources, enhancing the overall learning experience for students.

I welcome the opportunity to discuss in more detail how my leadership can contribute to the continued success of Watertown High School. Thank you for considering my application.

Your principal cover letter should underscore the fundamental skills that empower you to lead and oversee a school successfully, showcasing attributes such as effective communication, adaptability and a profound understanding of educational leadership.

To demonstrate your educational knowledge, your cover letter should radiate professionalism and clarity. A confusing or jumbled cover letter would not project the organizational skills expected of a school principal.

Consider the following formatting suggestions to ensure your letter puts your best foot forward:

  • Font style and sizing: Opt for established and easily readable fonts , such as Arial or Times New Roman, to maintain a professional appearance suitable for educational leadership. Choose an 11- or 12-point font size, standard for business documents.
  • Spacing: Maintain effective line spacing for optimal readability. Utilize 1.15 to 1.5 spacing for your text to present your leadership qualifications in a clear and accessible manner.
  • Margins: Present a polished document with 1-inch margins and left-aligned text, adhering to industry standards for a professional presentation of your leadership qualifications.

Cover letter templates for principals:

Choose a principal cover letter template that resonates with the expectations of the educational leadership position you ’ re pursuing and complements your leadership style.

For instance, a principal applying for a role in a modern, technology-driven school might opt for a contemporary template, while someone seeking a position in a traditional educational institution may benefit from a more classic format.

Explore our collection of cover letter templates to ensure your application presents your leadership experience in the best possible light. Additionally, coordinate your cover letter template with your resume template to create a cohesive and professional application, underscoring your commitment to excellence in educational leadership.

Research indicates that 83% of hiring managers consider cover letters to be crucial. Despite this, many aspiring educational leaders overlook this essential step. Mastering the art of writing a principal cover letter is a key step toward the career you’ve been envisioning. And it doesn’t have to be hard.

By adhering to a few simple steps, you can streamline the principal cover letter writing process into something straightforward, manageable and far from intimidating. Our guide will help you get started.

Study the educational leadership job description

A successful principal cover letter should be customized for each position you apply for. Your cover letter should articulate why you are an ideal fit for the particular principal position. A generic cover letter reused across applications won’t effectively convey your genuine interest.

In today’s competitive job market, applicant tracking systems (ATS) are frequently utilized to streamline candidate screening. These systems scan for keywords that match the qualifications outlined in the job description. Make your principal cover letter ATS-friendly by incorporating terms used in the educational leadership job description.

Customizing each cover letter to align with the unique requirements of each role not only elevates the quality of your application but also positions you for success during ATS screening.

Include your contact information in the header

While it might be the simplest section of your cover letter, the contact information in your header is among the most crucial. After all, the purpose of your job application is to get contacted for an interview! Ensure your contact details are easily accessible and accurate by placing them in the header and confirming they match the information on your resume.

  • City and state
  • Phone number
  • Email address
  • Relevant links to your professional portfolio or LinkedIn, if applicable

The header forms your first impression, so maintain professionalism by double-checking for errors and typos.

Address the hiring committee by name

Personalize the salutation of your principal cover letter by addressing it directly to the hiring committee. Directly addressing your letter to the specific individuals intended to read it demonstrates your commitment to the application process.

For public schools and districts, the names and contact information for those in charge of hiring educational leaders are typically available on the school or district’s website.

If you cannot find the names or details of the hiring committee, addressing the letter to the school’s administration team is an appropriate alternative.

Job listings often provide contact information for a hiring committee. If not, invest time in researching the school district to identify the individuals responsible for hiring. Adding a personal touch by addressing the recipients by name reflects thoughtfulness in your application.

Introduce yourself in the first paragraph

Whether you’re building an entry-level principal cover letter or one for an experienced educational leader, the opening paragraph is a pivotal moment to present yourself and showcase your qualifications, providing a snapshot of your career in education.

Entry-level assistant principal cover letter example opening paragraph:

I am reaching out to express my keen interest in the assistant principal position at [School Name], as advertised. I recently completed my master’s degree in educational leadership and I bring a profound dedication to creating a positive and enriching learning environment. I am eager for the opportunity to contribute to the educational vision of your institution.

Experienced principal cover letter example opening paragraph:

I am writing to convey my genuine interest in the principal position at [School Name], as advertised. With a proven track record in various leadership roles, an unwavering commitment to fostering student growth and a dedication to maintaining the highest educational standards, I am confident in my ability to elevate the academic atmosphere at your esteemed school. Having successfully overseen diverse responsibilities, including curriculum development and staff leadership, I am enthusiastic about bringing my expertise to your educational team and furthering the provision of exceptional education services.

Keep your introduction concise, aiming for no more than three sentences.

Explain why you’re the best candidate for the job

The body paragraphs of your principal cover letter provide an opportunity to elaborate on your educational career, emphasizing aspects that demonstrate your commitment to effective leadership practices and student success. Focus on the following key points:

  • Specify relevant leadership experience: While your resume provides an overview of your leadership journey, the cover letter allows you to delve deeper into specific accomplishments. Share notable achievements related to student growth, fostering a positive school culture and implementing effective educational strategies. By highlighting your leadership journey and aligning it with the needs of the position, you can illustrate why you are the ideal candidate for the principal role.
  • Showcase transferable skills: A comprehensive principal cover letter should emphasize both hard and soft skills . Showcase your leadership abilities alongside personal traits such as effective communication, adaptability and teamwork. Strive for a balanced presentation to provide a holistic view of your professional skills. Ensure that the skills you emphasize align with the priorities outlined in the job posting to resonate with the school’s leadership team.
  • Address any unique circumstances: Treat your principal cover letter as an opportunity to provide context for any unique aspects of your educational journey. If you pursued advanced degrees, took a sabbatical for personal reasons or professional growth, or transitioned from a different leadership role, briefly explain the situation. Discuss how your diverse experiences have enriched your skills, making you a well-rounded candidate for the principal position.

Example body paragraphs for a principal cover letter:

In my capacity as an educational leader, I have consistently demonstrated a commitment to fostering a positive school culture and contributing to the success of the students and staff under my guidance. During my tenure as an assistant principal at [District Name], I received accolades for implementing strategies that led to increased student achievement and positive feedback from both parents and colleagues.

During a brief hiatus for professional development, I dedicated time to enhancing my skills in educational leadership, including strategic planning and team collaboration. This period of growth reinforced my commitment to excellence, ensuring that I bring both experience and a fresh perspective to the principal position.

Write your cover letter closing

The conclusion of your cover letter should reaffirm your enthusiasm for the principal position and emphasize why you are a suitable fit for the role. Avoid duplicating information already covered in the body of your cover letter. Instead, conclude with a statement that underscores your value and extends an open invitation for an interview or further discussion.

Example closing paragraph for a principal cover letter:

I am genuinely thrilled about the opportunity to contribute my extensive experience in educational leadership, fostering a positive school culture and upholding the highest standards at [School Name]. Your school’s unwavering commitment to excellence in education resonates strongly with my dedication to student success and the continuous enhancement of overall educational quality. I eagerly anticipate the opportunity to discuss how my leadership skills can contribute to the continued success of your academic institution.

Maintain a professional and assertive tone in your call to action, striking a balance between warmth and formality. Avoid wording that may sound demanding or pushy. Be assertive yet polite.

Every letter concludes with a signature, and your cover letter is no exception. Ensure your cover letter concludes with a professional signoff suitable for a formal letter. “Sincerely” and “Best regards” are always safe choices. Avoid unprofessional signoffs like “Love” or “Cheers,” as these choices may come across as overly familiar or inappropriate for a professional document.

I Invited My Students to Be the Principal for a Day. Here’s What I Learned

052024 OPINION Khoshaba PRINCIPAL end the year with positivity

  • Share article

There is tired and then there’s “educator tired.”

More meetings, more conflicts to mediate, more data to collect and analysis overload, and more staffing decisions—the to-do list is exhausting. By springtime, most of us are operating on empty tanks while battling a seasonal-affective slump carried over from the winter.

With some degree of consistency, we can predict the times of the year when staff morale is highest, as well as the months when you can expect teachers to be crawling toward the finish line of upcoming school breaks. I heard a person once say, “If we can predict it, then we can influence it.”

About This Series

In this biweekly column , principals and other authorities on school leadership—including researchers, education professors, district administrators, and assistant principals—offer timely and timeless advice for their peers.

Like many principals, I’m an optimistic person by nature. But in mid-February, I felt myself struggling to change my heartache of stress into heartfelt joy.

When I analyzed why I was feeling this way, it became clear that I wasn’t living my “why” for working in public education. I was drowning in meetings that discussed adult issues instead of being focused on student learning and the experience of being a student at my school.

After consulting with a colleague, I decided to change how I was spending my time at work. That small change had a huge impact on my ability to refocus and feel fulfilled.

Several years ago, I participated in a principal challenge for which I shadowed a student for a day. It was an amazing experience that allowed me to better understand my school from a student’s perspective.

As I reflected on how to reenergize several months ago, I decided to try this activity once again at my new school—but with a twist. I wanted to help bridge the divide between students and adults. This time, I offered my students the opportunity to be principal for the day by following me as I made my rounds with classroom visits and staff member meetings.

My request of the students who joined me was simple: 1) Get parent permission, 2) be responsible for the work you missed in class, 3) communicate with your teachers that you would be with me for the day, and 4) write up a one-page summary of the events of the day and your reflections.

To my surprise, I was flooded with student requests. Just the idea of having a shared experience with the students we serve was uplifting. I marveled at the idea that students would want to know what my job entailed. It was a great way to connect and build kinship between students and the leaders that serve them.

What I imagined would be one day with one student shadowing me evolved into three days of multiple students per day participating in this activity.

Here are some of the lessons from the students who joined me:

  • Students and staff have a right to speak up, even if they are the only dissenting voice.
  • Keep an open mind when people bring concerns to you. The importance of growing from mistakes was highlighted.
  • Treat everyone with respect, no matter their position.
  • Communication should be two ways, not a monologue.
  • Make time to help others.

They enjoyed seeing the authentic and positive relationships that occur between administration and students and staff, but I was just as happy to learn from the students. They shared that they were surprised to see how well staff got along with each other behind the scenes, as well as with students in the hallways and classrooms. Our first shadow-the-principal day was March 14 (aka Pi Day in the math world), so the students had a chance to eat pie while talking with teachers in the math workroom.

My “apprentices” also enjoyed hearing a student share his idea for completing his Eagle Scout project that provided diabetic kits for students in need. He and I brainstormed various ways to complete the project, as well as how to market and sustain it in the years to come. The students later commented that they were surprised to observe an administrator working alongside their peers, generating ideas together.

Besides circulating throughout the school and speaking with a number of students and staff, the apprentices and I discussed ways that artificial intelligence could be used to facilitate teaching and learning in a positive way. I always find it enlightening to hear students’ technology ideas, including for AI use—for example, to assist with study tips or to organize their notes—were as innovative as I had heard from any presenters.

Finally, we ended the day by taking a stroll around the track at our football stadium. I shared that I like to go outside as much as I can to exercise and gather my thoughts. I try to do that once per week as part of my self-care routine. The students shared that they were pleasantly surprised to hear me prioritize that type of activity and that they thought their peers would benefit from such an activity as well.

I’m proud of my students for taking a chance on being a leader for the day. Students in 2024 have so many pressures facing them, so accepting one more thing can be a daunting task.

Here’s a challenge for everyone reading this article: Make time to prioritize your own “why.” This is especially important as we enter the final marking period of the year, when emotions tend to run high and stamina tends to wane.

Fill your tank with the kind of energy that inspired you to enter our profession. Look for the moments in your school on a daily basis when you can be kind, learn something new, build a new relationship, and spend time with those that brought you into a career in education—your students!

application letter to the school principal

Principal of Okaloosa STEMM Academy settles ethics case, agrees to probation and fines.

V ALPARAISO — The Florida Department of Education's Education Practices Commission has agreed to a settlement with Scheree Martin, principal of the Okaloosa STEMM Academy , to resolve allegations that Martin inappropriately disciplined a male high school student who was on the autism spectrum for behavior that was linked directly to the student's disability.

Here is what we know:

How did this case start?

During the 2020-21 school year, Martin was accused of inappropriately disciplining an autistic male high school student for behavior that was linked to the student's disability. Furthermore, Martin was alleged to have improperly pressured employees under her supervision to ignore and override parental requests to be present whenever discipline was imposed on the student.

Specific details of the case were not provided.

The incident prompted an internal investigation by the Okaloosa County School District human resources department, which is standard in such cases. The FLDOE Education Practices Commission investigated separately.

A letter of reprimand from the district

In a letter of reprimand dated Aug. 31, 2021, J. Lee Hale, assistant superintendent for the Okaloosa school district, told Martin that a formal investigation found "sufficient evidence" that she violated several school board and state ethics policies.

"As an Okaloosa County School District administrator, it is your responsibility to adhere to the highest level of professionalism at all times, ensuring that appropriate procedures are followed and removing any appearance of impropriety," Hale wrote. "While many of your actions noted in the Investigative Report do not rise to the level of policy violations, 'best practice' dictates that they demonstrated neither your best professional judgment nor your obligation to provide leadership and direction by appropriate example."

Hale also noted that Martin's use of the school resource officer in a disciplinary role was "in a manner unsupported by the contract," and reminded Martin that SROs are only to work within the scope of their duties, such as providing law enforcement or crime prevention assistance. Using an SRO in any other matter could send a misleading message or cultivate a hostile environment.

Along with the letter of reprimand, Hale required Martin to complete a SafeSchools training curriculum in special education law, roles and responsibilities in special education and behavior management by Oct. 1, 2021.

On Dec. 5, 2023, Hale wrote another letter to Martin that signaled the end of the school district investigation. The letter restates the previous letter by noting that "sufficient evidence" was found to verify that Martin did not meet FLDOE Board and district rules concerning ethics and professional conduct.

Hale then said that as an OCSD administrator, Martin is entrusted with "upholding the highest standard of professionalism consistently, ensuring prompt and effective handling of situations while not allowing past experiences to impede your effective management."

Hale noted that the investigation showed the need for a "refresher" in protocols for managing behavior. This led Hale to require Martin to complete another SafeSchools training course by Jan. 31, 2023. Toward the end of the letter, Hale said that any future problems could result in Martin receiving a suspension without pay or termination of employment.

Terms of the state settlement agreement

On March 7 this year, a hearing panel of the state Education Practices Commission met in Tampa and accepted a settlement agreement between Martin and the Department of Education.

According to the settlement, Martin will be on probation for two employment years. Within the first year of her probationary period, she must take a three-credit-hour college-level course in education ethics and pass the class with a B or higher.

Martin can also take two micro-credential courses in education ethics offered by the National Education Association within the first year.

Along with coursework, Martin must pay the EPC a $750 fine within the two-year probation period. A letter of reprimand has been placed in her state certification file and personnel file within the district.

Okaloosa County School District response

In an email, Catherine Card, the school district's public information officer, confirmed that the district was aware of a settlement agreement. She also noted that the district "takes appropriate disciplinary and reporting measures during and following its investigations, including, in this case, submission to the FLDOE Education Practices Commission."

The district then said that Florida statutes require that all teachers hired since 2011 be employed on an annual contract, and in Okaloosa County, the same rule applies to all administrators. For Martin, the School Board will approve all administrative agreements as recommended by the superintendent each June.

"We continue to have confidence in and the highest expectations for our employees and are proud to serve our families across the District," the statement says.

Manitoba school principal pens letter allowing young Oilers fan to stay up late to watch games

No student likes to bring a letter home from the principal and show their parents.

But nine-year-old Levi Ford and his principal Todd Harwood hatched a good plan.

Both big fans of the Edmonton Oilers , Harwood crafted a letter to Ford’s parents asking permission for his fellow Oilers die-hard fan to be able to stay up and watch late playoff games.

The plan worked, and Ford has been able to watch his beloved Oilers since Game 3 of the Western Conference final against Dallas.

“That’s often our topic of conversation in the halls or at recess,” said Harwood, principal of Deerwood School, in the small city of Thompson, Man., 761 km north of Winnipeg.

“The other day (after Game 1), I asked him if he got to watch the game, knowing full well he wouldn’t have because it went so late (double OT).

“He told me no, but he rattled off all the stats to me, so I asked him what he thought of the idea of sending his parents a letter asking if he can stay up and watch the games.”

Harwood and Ford made the letter look formal to play it up like he was going to be in trouble, and when Levi’s mother saw the letter before her husband saw it, she decided to have some fun with the request too.

“I texted my husband before he got home and said that Levi got into trouble. He asked what for, and I told him he’ll have to wait, and we can talk about it when he gets home,” said Levi’s mother, Kristyne Ford.

“As soon as he read the first two lines, he started to laugh, but he said he was upset the whole way home and he told me, ‘0I’m sure you took his electronics away, but if not, make sure you do, he has to know that he’s in trouble.'”

With the Oilers having to play both Los Angeles and Vancouver in the first and second rounds of the playoffs, it made for many late nights for Oilers fans, but especially for Levi who’s bedtime is well before the Oilers playoff games were finished.

Puck drop for the Western Conference final games against Dallas have been earlier and, after the request was granted, Levi got to stay up and watch Game 3 on Monday night.

“He was so excited. He would just scream and cheer every time (Connor) McDavid or (Leon) Draisaitl would touch the puck. When they scored, he was just so happy,” said Ford, who said Levi has been an Oilers fan his whole life.

“It was a lot of fun to see him get so excited. He’ll be watching Game 4 tonight, and I hope they win. That will make him so happy.”

For Harwood, being able to share a bond with one of his students over their favourite sports team is special. That bond is strong as they’re likely the only Oilers fans in their school and the northern Manitoba city that is filled with fans of the Winnipeg Jets.

As principal, more often than not, when students get sent to his office it’s not for anything positive, but doing something fun like this was just a spur of the moment idea, and now that his fellow Oilers fan can stay up and watch the Oilers playoff games, they’ll be able to talk even more about each playoff game as they happen.

“It’s even more important as my role as principal, for my own sanity and mental health,” said Harwood.

“A lot of times when kids get sent to my office to speak with me, it’s for something they did wrong, so doing something like this is important. You need to have those positive interactions with students.”

Playoff games can sometimes go extra long. Oilers fans surely remember Petr Klima’s overtime goal in the Stanley Cup final against Boston in 1990 that was scored late in the third overtime period. Or Shawn Horcoff’s triple-overtime goal against San Jose in 2006, or Fernando Pisani’s short-handed breakaway goal in the 2006 Stanley Cup final against Carolina that same year.

Kristyne Ford has a plan if any of the Oilers future playoff games go super late.

“We have a plan, and Mr. Harwood doesn’t know that, but if there is a game that goes super late in overtime, we’re going to send him a letter with Levi saying ‘Excuse my grouchiness, but I was up watching the Oilers game, thanks to you,” she said.

Ford said seeing the bond over the Oilers and hockey that her son has with his principal is important for her, as not all kids are able to connect with their fellow teachers at school. Ford’s husband knew Harwood prior to their son registering at the elementary school, and it’s been helpful for Levi to have someone at his school he can trust to talk to.

“Knowing that we had someone there that we actually knew that would keep an extra eye on him is nice. We’ve always told Levi that if there are any problems, or he needs to talk about something, he can go see him, and he’s done that a few times,” said Kristyne Ford.

Principal of Okaloosa STEMM Academy settles ethics case, agrees to probation and fines.

application letter to the school principal

VALPARAISO — The Florida Department of Education's Education Practices Commission has agreed to a settlement with Scheree Martin, principal of the Okaloosa STEMM Academy , to resolve allegations that Martin inappropriately disciplined a male high school student who was on the autism spectrum for behavior that was linked directly to the student's disability.
