My family is very small with four members – my mother, my father, my elder sister and me. My family is a middle class family and my father is officially the bread winner of our family. My mother supports him financially by taking tuitions for school children.

We do not have much money or wealth but what my family has in abundance is love for each other which cannot be replaced by anything else in this world. My father and my mother are the role models to my sister and me. They struggle a lot to give us a better life. More than anything they have taught us discipline and morals of life which is helping us to lead our lives in a righteous path even today.

I cannot ask anything more to God since he has already showered me with my family which I treasure the most every second and will safeguard even in the future.

The family is a valuable god gift which plays a most crucial role in every individual’s life. I love my family very much because all of my family members stand in my good as well as bad times. From moral teachings to love and support, my family has always helped me without any demand. There is no doubt that we experience our biggest triumphs when we really connect to them.

My family is like a strong pillar for me, on which I can rely blindly anytime I require support. From my family, I have learned the social graces of loyalty & cooperation.

My family consists of my grandfather, my grandmother, my mother, my father, two young sisters and myself. My grandparents are the pillars of my family and my grandfather is the head of my family. He is the one whose decision relating to any matter is final and all of us do respect it.

Right from my childhood, my family members have prepared me for the challenges that I’ll face in the years ahead. In addition to this, all of my family members help and serve each other at times of need. These qualities that I have learnt from my family has helped me to shape my adult life in a right manner.

I am really very attached to my grandfather. He holds an excellent life experience because he has already faced so many ups and downs. My Grandfather has helped me to build my perception & vision towards society.

My family has always been there to motivate and encourage me to overcome all difficulties in life and achieve success. The role of every member in my family is unique and important in their own way. I thank God that I have grown up in a family full of love and discipline. My family values will definitely help me in becoming a better person.

A person without family and its love never becomes completely happy in his/her life. I am complete and happy with my family that includes five members. My family is a group of five including me, father, mother, brother, and sister. Family bonding is a unique type of love that gives you every lesson needed to live a harmonious life.

Growing under the supervision of a caring and loving family will increase our social values and overall well-being. Each member of my family carries out equal responsibility in sculpting the strong bonding needed for a better future and develop moral importance in each other.

My father owns a successful business of office stationery store. He uses the money to cover all our expenses and give a better lifestyle to the family. He works hard day and night to get us better education, food, home, etc. He hides all his tiredness when he comes home after a long day to spend quality time with us.

My mother is a talented homemaker who also does a part-time tailoring at home. She does all her duties with at most interest, from taking care of us to all the household chores and finds time to pursue her passion as well. She is a multi-tasker and does all the tasks from helping us in our studies to preparing delicious healthy foods to sculpt us into a better human being.

My brother is an engineering graduate and does a job in a well-known company. He is my best well-wisher and helps me in all ups and downs. My sister is also an engineering graduate and an employee in an IT company. She always finds time to help me with all my difficulties and she is my secret keeper too.

My family is a lifeline to whom I can run to, whatever may be the situation I am facing. My family guides me to be a good person and help me in nurturing good values. We, humans, are animals that live together spreading love and care for each other, and this togetherness is called family. The absence of such a divine bonding make us equal to animals.

Family value and growing in such a caring surrounding helps me to pass all the struggles and hardships that I face in my daily life. Whatever be the situation we are facing, our family will never leave us alone. My family is a blessing for me and I value everyone in my family with equal respect and love.

Most of the people in the world are blessed with having a family. A family, with whom you can share all your joys and sorrows, who is there to guide you through your growing years, who stands by you in the toughest of the situations. I too am blessed to have such a family.

My family is one the most bizarre family in the world. We are four people, my mother, my father, my younger brother and me. While my father is the one who does work for a living, it is my mother who is the boss of the house. My father is a humble person. He is an officer in a government department. My mother is a housewife. It is our mother who takes care of our studies as our father is often busy with his official assignments and even travels for days together. We just miss him when he is not at home.

He never scolds us. But, our mother is just the opposite. She wants us to remain disciplined and we often get scolded by her. However, our father comes to our rescue most of the times. My brother, still in school is the one with whom I love to spend my time the most. Not because I love to play with him, but because, being the elder sister, I enjoy instructing him and showing him who is more powerful at home. He, at a time, seems so helpless when our mother says to obey his sister. I just love that moment. But not all days are the same. I hate having to study all along while he gets to play more than me.

The Atmosphere in my Family:

We largely have a peaceful atmosphere at home. After school, our time is spent on studying, playing and watching television, which of course our mother does not like. Unlike other couples, my mother and father seldom have a fight. In fact, as soon we see an argument brewing up, one of them just withdraws and it is just rare to see a heated conversation between them. This is what I like the most about them as I feel that my parents are so cool. It is only me and brother who love to fight with each other.

However, we know that behind those fights, it is actually our love for each other which binds us together. I just enjoy being at home spending time with my parents and my brother. I just feel how bad it would be when tomorrow I and my brother shall move on for our professional lives and we shall not be able to spend much time together. However, it is the memories of today which shall be with me forever and will bring a smile on my face anytime when I feel low.

The Importance of a Family:

A family is said to be the first school of a child. It is from here you start to learn how to speak, walk and interact with the world. It is important to value the importance of a family in one’s life. At times, people feel that they are grown-ups and that their parent’s advice does not matter anymore, but that is not true. It is the elders of the family who at any given of time would know the world better than us and we should all respect our family members and love our siblings as well. It is the family who builds our character and we should feel fortunate to have a family around us.

My family values are what I take so dear to my heart because they have made me what I am today and I plan on passing these great values to my children in future. Every family has those things, acts and values that they hold in high esteem and they cherish so much. These vales have become a part of them: most times, it is what distinguishes the traits in each family and in some ways it makes or mars the future of the family members. Same applies to my family, we have some set values that has become a part of us and it has made my life a lot better because I have become a better person who is not only valuable to himself but also to the society at large. I will be sharing some of these values with you.

My Family Values:

Some of my family values include:

1. Honesty:

This is a principle that is highly protected in my family. My dad has this saying that, “honesty is the best policy.” Ever since I was little, my family has taught me how to be honest and the benefits that lie within. Sometimes, my parents even test us in ways we were not expecting and a reward is given to the person that comes out honest. This is one of my family values that I cherish so much and I am proud that it is what my family hold in high esteem.

2. Kindness to Others:

This is not a common trait to all. My mom has this belief that if the world and everybody in it shows love and kindness to one another, there will be no hatred and wars will be eradicated. This is a family value that we cherish so much. I learnt to show love to everybody. Even when we did not have much, my parents will still give to those who are needy. My dad says that the world is like a river, we would eventually flow into one another later and you do not know the future, the person you helped today might eventually be of help to you tomorrow.

3. Education:

This is a value that has been passed from generation to generation in my family. My dad would say that education is the best legacy you can give to a child. My family does everything in their capacity for you to get a sound and benefitting education. The acquisition of knowledge is also quite important. All of us try to gain more and more knowledge because we all have a family slogan that says “knowledge is power and that power makes me a hero.”

4. Dress and Appearance:

This is a religious value we cherish in my family. My dad would say that you are addressed the way you dress. I do not want to be address wrongly and give out a wrong impression. So, our appearance really matter a lot to us and the way we dress.

Conclusion:

Every family has one thing or the other that they hold in high esteem and tend to pass on from generation to generation. This is what makes a family a united sect not because we are related by blood but because of we share the same values.

Introduction:

Why I love my family is a question that has been floating through my mind for a very long time because no matter how hard I try to pin out a reason why I love them, I just can’t find one. This can be due to fact that they mean the whole world to me and I will do anything for them. I love my family a lot and I would like to share some of the reasons why I love my family and will never trade them for anything.

Why I Love My Family:

I have a family that consists of 6 people: my father, my mother and four children which includes me. For you to understand why I love my family I will tell you a little about each of them and why I love them so much.

My father is the best father in the world: well, that’s what I say. He is a business manager. I look up to my father a lot because I will like to take a lot of his behaviours and make it mine. He taught me to be contented with whatever I have. We did not have much when I was growing up; my dad lost his job and still did not allow anything of the pressure change how he behaved to us at home. He is caring, gentle, accommodating and disciplined.

My mum is the best cook in the world. I do not know where I would be today without my mum. I owe her a lot. She is a teacher by profession and this fascinates me a lot because not only is she inculcating knowledge in the young minds of tomorrow, she is also building the future of our society at large. I want to be like my mum. I remember those times when she had to sacrifice when the most precious of her things just to make me happy. She is loving, caring, understanding, accommodating. In fact, she is everything you can ever wish for in a mother.

My elder sisters are the best. Although they can be frustrating sometimes but that is mostly because of my stubbornness. They pretend they do not really care but deep inside they do. The things they do even subconsciously say otherwise. I remember a day in elementary school, I was being bullied a boy in class. On this particular day, he hit me. Unknowing to me, my sister heard about it and she beat the boy and made him apologise to me, I felt so happy that day because I had someone who had my back.

My brother is one of the best gifts I have received. He is the last child and this gives him an opportunity to be annoying if you know what I mean. He is joyful and always ready to heed correction. There was this day, I heard him bragging to his friends about how awesome I am, and I was the happiest that day.

We all have one reason or the other on why we love our family. I love mine because they are the best gift I could ever ask for and the fact that they have been there for me through the good, bad and funny times.

Importance of family is something that is greatly overlooked and underrated in the world we live in today. The definition that the family had about one hundred years before now was very clear. Back then, a family was believed to be a unit that consisted of the father that was in charge of the finances of the family, a mother whose primary duty was to look after the home and take care of the children and then there were the children. Largely based on the region you are from, a family can also include members of the extended family like aunts, uncles and grandparents. This type of family system is referred to as joint family.

Family Importance:

A family that is important is one that is very strong. If a family is going to be very strong, there is a need for the bond between them to be very strong. Bonds that help in keeping the members of a family with each other are relationships. If there are very strong relationships among all the members of a family, there is going to be stronger commitment between all of them and the family as a unit will be very important.

Better communication is also a result of family relationships that are very strong. If all the family members can take time out to talk and know each other well, the bond between them is bound to be very strong. Even if the conversations are about big things or small things, it does not really matter. The most important thing is that all family members stay connected to one another. It is very important that they all list to each other and understand every member.

How to make Family Bonds Very Strong:

We have various things that can help our family bond to improve.

A few of them include:

1. Love: love is the most important thing we need for our bonds as a family to improve. When we love the members in our family, we will also be able to know all about privacy, intimacy, caring, belonging and sharing. When there is love in a family, the family will prosper.

2. Loyalty: loyalty is something that comes as a result of love. Family members should stay devoted to each other. It is important that we are able to count on our family to have our back anytime we are facing problems.

The importance of family can never be overstated even though we live in a different time now and our attitudes to relationships, marriage and what a family should be has changed. The family is something that we need to help share our problems and be there for us anytime we have issues. A lot of the things that were not acceptable in the past and we now see as normal. Even with all the changes that the society has effected on our family system, the family still remains the major foundation of our society and this will remain the same.

My family is the best gift I have got. A family can be simply said to mean a social group of different people in our society that includes one or more parents and also their children. In a family, every member of the family commits to other members of the family in a mutual relationship. A family is a very important unit and the smallest unit in the society. A family whether a big one or a small one is of very great importance and use to all of its members and is believed to be the unit of our society that is strongest because the society is formed from the coming together and culmination of various families.

In many cultures, the family serves a child’s first school where the child learns all about their traditions and cultures more importantly learn about all the rudimentary values in life. A family is very essential in the teaching of healthy habits and good manners to all the members of the family. It gives the members of the family the opportunity to become people with better character in our society. I feel very lucky to be born into a small and lovely family; I learnt a lot of things from my family.

I am from a middle class and average family with six members (my father, my mother, my grandmother, my grandfather, my younger brother and me). My grandfather is the head of the family and we all respect and listen to him. He is really wise and tries to advise each and every one of us using his many life experiences. He has been involved in many interesting and adventurous activities that he tells me about all the time. Most of the time, he has the final say on all of our family issues and he does his best to make all his decisions impartial.

Any time we are eating today as a family, he sits at the top of the table; we all have designated seats at the dining table. When my brother and I are available, my grandfather teaches us about our traditions and cultures. My grandfather is very friendly and has a cool and great personality and tries to talk nicely and calmly to everyone passing across his message without being rude. He helps my brother and sometimes me with our assignments. He majorly teaches us about all of the tools we need to be successful in life including punctuality, discipline, moral, cleanliness, continuity, honesty, hard work and trustworthiness.

My lovely grandmother is one of the nicest people I know, she tells my brother and I lovely stories every night. My father is a civil engineer and he is very hardworking, sincere and punctual. He is the breadwinner of the family and does his best to provide for every member of the family even if that means he has to work extra hours. My mother is very sweet and takes care of every member of the family even though she works as an accountant at a firm. She wakes up very early in the morning to make preparations for the day. My brother is a funny and jovial person that enjoys sporting activities and I love him so much.

Sometimes I wish my cousins, uncles and aunts lived with us, I love having them around. There are a lot of advantages and disadvantages of having everyone around. I have highlighted some below.

Some advantages are:

1. It gives a better routine of living that can contribute to a proper growth.

2. Having a joint family helps in following the numerous principles of an equitable economy and helps teach discipline and respect. It also teaches us how to share the burden of other family members.

3. There is the understanding of having to adjust to the needs of other family members.

4. The children in a large family get to grow up in a happy environment because they have children of their age around that they can play with.

5. All the members of a joint family are usually very disciplined and responsible as everyone has to follow the instructions of the family head.

Some of the disadvantages include:

1. There is always the chance of a rift or fight between the family members because of the possible imbalance of feelings of oneness, brotherly love and feeling of generosity.

2. There is a chance of the members of the family that earn very high looking down on members of the family that do not.

The concept of family is important in India for every individual. Family defines an individual background in terms of social relations and growth. Families influence the lives of individuals from childhood to adulthood especially in decisions concerning life milestones like marriage and career paths. Indian families live together for up to four generations under one roof and they manage to maintain lose family relations compared to other families across the globe. Indian families tend to stick to their cultural practices as a family and they maintain religious practices that cut across the family. Elders in Indian families are respected by the members of the family and their opinions are considered during decision making.

What Family Really Means :

Basic knowledge defines a family as a group of people who share genetic and legal bonds. However, the concept of family means a lot more for other people than just the bond and it incorporates the concepts of culture and religion. In India, the concept of family differs from what the rest of the world perceives as family.

Families in India go beyond nuclear and extend to wider circles, whereby the extended family lives together and are closely related. The relationships in the family are strong such that cousins are considered siblings and aunts and uncles are considered parents. Family also means the unconditional love among the members of the family whereby there is support in terms of finances and emotions.

Why the Family is so important:

The family plays a central role in lives of individuals in teaching of moral values. Parents, aunts, uncles and grandparents have been known to teach the children on morality and disciplinary issue s in most cultures. Both spiritual and moral values are instilled through family. Family give a sense of belonging to individuals because they are over by the family and supported at all times.

A family will always support its members with needs including financial and emotional needs. In a family, there has been established levels of satisfaction and happiness from the joy of being together. Families also helping community development through contributions and participating in activities in the community. The family is important in the society in maintaining order, discipline and peace.

I come from a big family. My family has not moved to an urban area and so we still live as a wider circle together with the extended family. In my nuclear family, I am the first born of four children. I have one sister and two brothers who are still at school. I have three aunts and two uncles. My cousins are twelve in number and most of them are at school except for the youngest ones.

My grandparents are very old and they do not get out of the house much and are being taken care by my parents and aunts. Most of the children are always at school and the house gets quiet but during holiday, we all unite together as a full house. My family is of the middle class in terms of wealth. Our religion is Hindu and we all practice the Indian cultures and traditions. What I love about my family is that everyone is a good cook and the food is always amazing. Members of my family are kind and respectful and that is why we rarely have disputes. The family support is strong and we all love each other.

Why I love My Family:

Having a big family is interesting because the house always feels warm. As I had earlier mentioned, my family is made of good cooks, which makes me love them. There is always teamwork within the family and good relationships are maintained. I like the adventurous nature of my family because we always have fun whenever we go for holiday vacations or have a family event.

Moral cultural and spiritual values are highly cared for in the society. My family is oriented in good moral values and believe we make a good role model for the society. Despite the influence of education, the family has been able to maintain the culture and traditions of Indian people. The love that exists in my family is precious and that is the most important value of all times because what family without love?

Our Weekend Outings and House Parties:

We do not have many of these in our family because of the different schedules among the members. We only have weekend outings and house parties during holidays. Birthday parties are and weddings are the parties that we frequently have as a family. I love parties at home because the food is usually exceptionally good. Also, the dancing and happy faces. Weekend outings are usually in form of picnics and they are usually full of games.

Cousins Visit during Summer:

My family is young and only three of my cousins are in college. The rest are in high school or elementary schools. Whenever my cousins come home from school, it is a happy moment for the whole family and we host parties to welcome them home. Whenever my older cousins are at home, I enjoy their company and I love to hear stories about college because that is where I will be in a few years’ time.

In the spirit of holidays, we have a vacation or two in a year. During these vacations, plans begin early and when the time comes, it is enjoyable and relaxing. Vacations for us as children tend to be more enjoyable because we have an environment away from home and with minimal parental supervision and we tend to explore and talk among ourselves. Team building during vacations strengthens the bond in families.

Family is a blessing to individuals because that is where they belong and it is what defines them. A good family is built through moral values and team effort. Having family events and parties or vacations re important is strengthening the relationships within a family. A happy individual is definitely from a happy family.

But as the youngest of seven, I have many fond memories of growing up in a large family. With birthrates at a record low , many are missing these advantages. Here is a list of some of the positive aspects of growing up in a big family.

1. Learn to share and compromise

A 2004 study of more than 20,000 kindergarteners in America found that teachers rated students who had at least one sibling as having an edge in social skills. They were better at making friends, helping other kids and more in tune to the feelings of others. Compromise and cooperation are just some of the positive results kids can benefit from having multiple siblings. These abilities help children build more positive relationships with one another.

2. Lonely buster

Many parents find that children with multiple siblings tend to get along better and love each other at an earlier age. According to BabyCenter , having more than one sibling increases a child's ability to make friends, show empathy and accept responsibility since there is always someone to play with.

3. Bigger vocabulary

I remember the exact moment when I looked at my husband right after I gave birth to our first child. I was physically drained, yes. But what I remember most was how I literally felt my love for him grow at that moment. And it only intensified with each child. Children are quite observant to the loving relationship their parents have, even when no words are spoken. This makes for a healthier family relationship which reflects on the personality and actions of children.

6. Housework help

With a bigger brood often comes a bigger house. No need to fork out extra dough for a cleaning service! Get those kids to work! Chores, especially when organized, teach children responsibility.

7. Names, Names, Names

Remember when you were young, and you would envision your future family and pick out names for each child? With a big family comes a need for a variety of names! Something fun (and maybe a little scary) you could do to involve the older children is to let them pick out the name of the new baby! But proceed with caution: if I had let mine do that, my youngest would be named Spinosaurus.

8. "Team" work

I have many fond memories of playing kick-ball with my siblings. Often, our parents would join in on the fun and we would have two full-sized teams in our backyard. This gives children great opportunities to practice good sportsmanship.

9. Self-reliance

According to educational consultant, James B. Stenson , children from big families are genuinely needed at home. Through their chores and their handling of responsibilities around the house, they contribute to the family's welfare. They grow in self-knowledge, self-confidence and self-reliance.

I know this will mean having our work cut out for us, but with all of that comes lots more adventure, lots more laughter and lots more love.

I’m the mom who wants a big family . There, I finally said it. Well actually, I’ve been saying it. And you should see the looks on people’s faces when my husband and I mention we want about five or six kids ( four would be our sweet spot, but we’re not opposed to a couple more). Seems absurd, right? 

Well, it’s the complete opposite for me. I’m one of nine kids. Imagine growing up in a family of 11. Now what I want doesn’t seem too ridiculous, does it?

I’m sure to some people, it may still be a shocker. Especially because the number of children that families are having is decreasing. In Motherly’s 2022 State of Motherhood survey , results showed that this year’s survey finds the largest percentage of moms ever saying they do not plan to have more children. 48% of mothers said they are not planning to have or adopt more children. Of those moms, 31% divulge their family feels complete and 14% report that they don’t want to be pregnant again. And of those 14% who don’t want to be pregnant again, most are working moms (62% of them work FT).

But despite what statistics are saying and despite all the reasons women are deciding not to have more children, I still do want more—and more than the average woman or couple might be comfortable raising. Because being from a big family has made me a family-centered individual. 

I know this may come as a concern to most people. My husband and/or I have often received questions like: 

Are you sure you’re prepared to have your hands full?

Why do you want so many children?

Don’t you think that maybe just a few are enough?

And while these questions may cause someone to second-guess themselves, they don’t really affect me. Because from experience, I know what having a big family is like —and that still doesn’t dissuade me from wanting one of my own.

There are certainly a lot of things to consider when it comes to having a big family ( finances and time management probably being the top two), but there is also so much to enjoy. 

Having a big family is a different experience than most families of just a few would ever know. And though the thought of it can sometimes seem overwhelming, the reality of it is absolutely wonderful .

Family rests at the core of who I am as a woman, as a mother and as a wife.

One thing I loved about being from a big family was the comradery built amongst my siblings . We grew up with each other, experienced new things together, made neighborhood friends together and prepared each other for elementary school, middle school, high school—and whatever else the world threw our way.

There was never a dull moment in our house (and rarely any quiet time). Sure, we picked our fights and tattled on each other often, but we also had each other’s backs and learned how to have fun together.

We used our creativity—making up games, cooking new meals, playing pranks on our parents. And though sometimes we were up to no good, most times we were creating the best childhood memories that we still cherish to this day. And now, we get to sit around my parent’s dining room table and reminisce about those precious moments. And the laughter that fills the air warms my heart every single time.

I know that having a large family will mean having our work cut out for us. It would mean more pregnancies that my body would have to go through, more sleepless nights, more tantrums, more helping with homework, more extracurricular activities, more college send-offs, more challenges . But with all of that comes lots more adventure, lots more laughter and lots more love.

Our kids will have each other as built-in best friends and protectors. They will learn to look out for one another and defend each other—inside and outside the home. They will learn responsibility and how to work together as a team. But most importantly, they will learn to cherish family. 

And more generations will be created within our family name. 

Family rests at the core of who I am as a woman, as a mother and as a wife. Certainly, life takes its course and doesn’t always go according to our plan, so if we are only blessed with a few—we will still be big at heart. But if we are blessed with a large family—we will love them all for every second of our lives.

Motherly designed and administered this survey through Motherly’s subscribers list, social media and partner channels, resulting in more than 17,000 responses creating a clean, unweighted base of 10,001 responses. This report focuses on the Gen X cohort of 1197 respondents, millennial cohort of 8,558 respondents, and a Gen Z cohort of 246 respondents. Edge Research weighted the data to reflect the racial and ethnic composition of the US female millennial cohort based on US Census data.

The Benefits and Disadvantages of Large Versus Small Families

According to the CDC, most babies in the United States are conceived during December and January. Is it because couples hunker down for the long winter season? Or is it the holiday celebrations and spiked eggnog that lead to mistletoe munchkins nine months later? Whatever the reason, the statistics remain pretty consistent. More couples begin families -- and add to them -- during this festive time of year.

For me, like millions of others, the holidays now bring a fair amount of preparation for my already existing family. I am a psychologist, wife, mother of three, step-mom to one and grandmother of two. While once focused on the festivities (yes, my brood sprung from that popular generative season), my attention now centers on all that has to get done between Thanksgiving and New Year's -- with relatives visiting, kids coming home, meals to prepare, parties to attend -- and presents to buy! It got me thinking about the differences between holidays shared with small families versus larger ones, a topic I recently discussed with Michael Coren on The Arena.

On the show, Coren brought up the Dugger family -- you know, the one with "19 kids and counting," who just announced that number 20 is on the way? Clearly, every month is a busy one for this couple, but it is particularly hard to imagine what it's like at their house this time of year. And even more unimaginable what it will be like when those children add spouses and offspring to their holiday celebrations. While it's easy to disparage this reality show phenomenon, Coren asked me to talk about the psychological upside to having lots of siblings. He referred to his own positive experiences with his wife's family of fifteen, which made me think of mine, with my husbands many relatives.

You see, it's all relative, about relatives. I just returned from a lovely Thanksgiving dinner hosted by my in-laws, which included about 25 of my extended family members. A warm, lively affair, it felt like a huge extravaganza in comparison to the ones of my childhood . Growing up, holiday dinners in our home were small, intimate gatherings shared only with my parents and two siblings.

When I met my husband, he came along with a three-year-old son from his first marriage and close relationships to his large extended family. They included parents -- a dad, now a robust 99, a mom still graceful at 95 -- a younger brother, a sister-in-law, aunts, uncles, cousins and more cousins. For them, family get-togethers were well choreographed and much anticipated events. Most everyone lived close by (few seem to want to move far from one another), but even those who had to travel wouldn't miss these celebrations.

It took me some time to get used to this fanfare on Thanksgiving, Christmas, Mother's Day, Father's Day, birthdays and so on -- any event was an excuse for a large family gathering. The preparation, the decorating, the bustling, the presents -- oh, and the chaos! Our most recent Turkey Day was just that -- an afternoon of continuous chatter, endless food, wine and non-stop toasts -- a collaborative event from beginning to end. At some point, music went on and everyone began dancing, the evening winding down only as the elders and babies fell asleep. It was so unlike the atmosphere created by my smaller family, who celebrated holidays is a very different way.

My parents were Holocaust survivors, so by the time I was born, only a few of my extended family were around for celebrations. My grandparents, and all but one of my mom and dad's ten siblings had been killed in concentration camps. We had no cousins or second cousins, and only a couple further removed. On holidays, my mom did the cooking (most often brisket and mashed potatoes), the serving and the clean-up. There was kosher wine, candles and usually a blessing that my dad sung before the meal. It was kept simple and the same -- except for the conversation. We talked books, politics , current events and topics that seemed important to us at the time -- plans, dreams , expectations. Sometimes we would talk over each other, but each got a turn. For my parents, every holiday -- or for that matter, everyday -- was cause for quiet commemoration. They had survived and we were their proof.

My parents are gone now and my siblings don't live nearby. So my holidays are most often spent with my husband's large, boisterous family, which I have come to view as a built-in nest. As new children are born, they are happily welcomed. As elders get more frail, responsibility is shared. Between the swapping of stories, jokes and pictures, there is always time for a family member in need of support. Bottom line, they are there for one another -- to depend upon for comfort, to count on for fun.

No doubt, bigger does not necessarily mean better, but large families can teach us important lessons. Whether or not we approve of the Duggers' religious and reproductive beliefs, watching how they work -- or don't -- shows us an exaggerated form of what large families entail. There are the compromises, the necessary patience, and a constant sense that life has to be divvied up. The available resources -- not only financial, but parental affection and attention -- have to be shared.

In a world that seems so unpredictable and unsafe, it's an appealing notion to think the more the merrier. On the other hand, most of us realize that 20 kids is a bit much -- maybe even a little bizarre -- given that many couples are postponing having even one during these tough economic times. Interestingly, when you ask those who grew up in huge families if they plan to recreate that experience for their own children, often they cut the number down by quite a lot. Mostly they say they can't afford it, but they also talk about wanting more quiet time and of course, more sweet potatoes to go around!

In the end, family satisfaction seems to come down to how well parents create a loving atmosphere at home -- and not just during the holidays. You can have a family with one or two kids and experience deprivation and disconnection, or a family of many more and feel as if your cup runneth over. Regardless of size, there is something to say about family gatherings that give us all a chance to celebrate what we have -- big or small.

'Tis the season when more than mice will be stirring all through our houses. So be merry and have fun, but take a moment to ask yourself how you feel about large or small families? It's a choice worth contemplating between drinking eggnog and eating latkes -- one that impacts not only the holidays, but the rest of your life.

It’s no secret that big families come with their own set of unique joys and challenges.

Whether you’re a parent of one or ten, it can be tough to keep track of everything in your big family. From coordinating schedules to finding enough space for everyone, there are plenty of challenges in a big family.

Luckily, there are also plenty of joys to go around.

From the shared laughter around the dinner table to the sense of security and support that comes from knowing you’re never alone, there are plenty of reasons to love a big family.

How Many is a Big Family?

Usually, a family with more than three children is considered a “big family.”

In some cases, it may also refer to a family with multiple generations living under one roof.

Whatever the definition, a big family typically requires more space, more resources, and more patience than a smaller one. But they also tend to be louder, messier, and more chaotic.

There are also more chances for conflict, but also more chances for love and laughter. In many ways, a big family is like a microcosm of the world.

It can be difficult to manage, but it’s also full of potential.

Which is correct: big family or large family?

Technically speaking, big often refers to the physical size of an object, such as a big house, or big television. Big can also refer to something that is weighty and important (milestone moments in life are often considered “big” moments).

Large usually only refers to the physical size of something and is often used less often than “big”. Both terms are used interchangeably for the most part.

This being said, you can call a family a “big family” or a “large family” without being wrong.

What’s It Like Having a Big Family?

As someone who comes from a large family (I’m the oldest of four siblings), I can tell you that there are many advantages to a big family!

Of course, just like everything, there are some possible disadvantages, too. Let’s talk through a few of the main advantages and disadvantages of a big family…

Advantages of a Big Family

Imagine waking up to the sound of giggles and cheerful talks (well, on the good days only).

This is the coziness a family brings to your life by making you feel relevant, loved, and cherished.

But besides the love-filled relations a family usually consists of, here are some often overlooked advantages of big families: 

There Is Always Someone To Spend Time With

Cozy family gatherings around the dinner table, late-night talks with your siblings while sharing a bed on road trips – are just some of the priceless moments that can only be experienced when living in a big happy family.

Unlike living alone or with roommates, you always have someone to spend time with and talk to when living in a big happy family.

Even though arguments are bound to happen between siblings or between parents and children, there is always a sense of love and togetherness in a big happy family.

In tough times, family members will rally around each other and offer support, and in good times, everyone can enjoy each other’s company.

There is Built-In Support and Assistance

One of the biggest plus points of big families is the sense of support and community that comes from being surrounded by loved ones.

In a big family, there is always someone to lend a hand with childcare, cooking, errands, or any other need. Members of a large family are also quick to offer emotional support during tough times.

Knowing that you have such a strong network of people to rely on can be a great source of comfort and strength. 

Children in Larger Families Learn to Share 

In today’s world, it’s not uncommon for children to grow up in small families.

With only one or two siblings, they may never learn the essential life lessons that come from sharing.

However, children who grow up in larger families often have different experiences. From an early age, they learn to share everything from toys to parents’ attention.

As they grow older, they continue to share their space and resources. This can result in some challenges, but it also teaches them important skills like cooperation and negotiation. 

Families With More Children Tend to Be Closer-Knit

While it is certainly not true in all cases, families with more children tend to be closer-knit. With more kids comes more noise, messes, and chaos—but also more laughter, love, and memories.

There is always someone to play with in a larger family, whether it’s a game of tag in the backyard or a pillow fight in the living room. And when times are tough, siblings can be a source of comfort and support.

Of course, raising a family is never easy, but it can be especially challenging for parents of large families.

However, they would likely tell you that it is all worth it. After all, there is no greater joy than watching your children grow into happy and caring adults. 

Disadvantages of a Big Family

Sure, big families look great in pictures and their festive times also look fun-filled.

But, it’s not always hunky-dory, especially when there are financial issues and personality clashes.

So, it’s only fair to discuss the major downsides of big families.  

Less One-On-One Time For Each Child With Parents

In families with several children, it’s not uncommon for each parent to feel stretched thin.

As a result, each child may have less one-on-one time with their mom or dad. While this can be tough on kids, it’s important to remember that all families are different, and there is no one “right” way to parent.

In fact, research has shown that children in large families often benefit from having a wide social network and developing independent skills at an early age.

Of course, every child is different, and some may thrive with more one-on-one attention. But ultimately, it’s up to each family to find what works best for them.

It’s More Expensive To Support A Large Family

For parents, raising a large family can be both expensive and exhausting.

With more children comes more expenses, from food and clothing to education and child care. And as any parent knows, children require a lot of time and energy.

From dealing with tantrums and homework to soccer practice and field trips, parents of large families often find themselves running on empty.

Of course, there are also many rewards to raising a big family. Seeing all your children grow and succeed is one of the most rewarding experiences a parent can have.

And despite the challenges, most parents of large families wouldn’t have it any other way.

It’s Difficult to Keep Everyone Organized and On Track

Anyone who has ever tried to herd a group of children knows that it can be a challenge to keep everyone organized and on track.

This is especially true for parents of large families. With so many kids to keep track of, it’s easy for things to quickly go off the rails.

From mismatched socks to forgotten homework, there always seems to be something that can trip up even the most well-organized parent. 

Big Families Are More Likely To Have Arguments And Disagreements

Any family is likely to experience the occasional argument or disagreement.

However, families with more members may be more prone to conflict due to the greater number of personalities and opinions involved.

In a large family, there are differences of opinion on everything from what to eat for dinner to how to spend a weekend.

And with more people comes more chances for someone to feel left out or excluded.

With so many different personalities in one household, it’s not surprising that arguments and disagreements are more common in large families. 

Extended Family

There are many types of large families out there, but one of the most common, yet misunderstood, is an extended family.

Let’s talk about what an extended family is, and the advantages and disadvantages of this type of family unit.

What is an Extended Family

In short, an extended family is a type of family that extends beyond the nuclear family (a nuclear family usually consists of parents, plus the natural children of those parents living together in a household).

An extended family can include grandparents, aunts, uncles, and other relatives. These relatives all live either in one household together, or nearby.

Extended family units are more common in some parts of the world than others.

You are more likely to see them in areas such as Asia, Southern Europe and Africa, and less likely to have them in North America and Northern Europe.

Extended Family Advantages and Disadvantages

Extended families can be complex, with many advantages and disadvantages.

One advantage is financial. It’s economically beneficial to all when families can live under the same roof and share expenses.

Extended families can also help each other out with childcare, chores, cooking and other household tasks.

Also, extended families often share close bonds as well as cultural values, promoting a tight knit family to weather the ups and downs of life with.

One of the big disadvantages of extended family situations is that there is often a lack of independence.

Because family members depend so highly on each other, it can be hard to break away, be independent and forge your own path.

Many believe that the advantages of extended families outweigh the disadvantages.

Life in a big family is usually full of love, laughter, and chaos. There are always people around to give hugs and lend a helping hand.

However, there can also be a lot of noise, arguments, and confusion.

With so many people living under one roof, it’s important to have good communication and organizational skills.

But for those who enjoy being surrounded by loved ones, a big family can be the perfect place to call home.

9 Overlooked Advantages of Having a Big Family

I wouldn’t say that having three or more kids is easy, but there are many advantages of having a big family. I think some of these can go overlooked when people gape and gasp at the gaggle of children you have.

I wanted to give some love to big families with this post and share some of my favorite things about having a big family. Yes, we have crazy busy lives. They are also filled with so much joy.

I was an only child growing up, so this big family business is new to me. It’s been a delight to experience. Whether you have a brood of your own or are considering future family size, I hope you’ll enjoy reading about the advantages of having a big family.

You can even send the article to doubting family members who scoff and say, “You’re pregnant again? Don’t you know how that happens?”

While this post focuses on the advantages of having a big family, I’ve also written a more well-rounded post about what it’s like having four kids .

Today, big families aren’t the norm. There has been a steady decline in US birth rates since the end of the baby boom in the 1960s. However, a recent survey found that four in ten US adults think that three or more children is the ideal family size, representing an uptick from previous years.

Advantages of Having a Big Family

1. we laugh a lot.

There’s always something silly going on in our house. From the 2 year-old loudly announcing her bowel movements to the teenager sharing funny videos, there are plenty of opportunities for laughter.

Sometimes we just laugh at the craziness that ensues in our household. (It’s either that or we might go a little batty.)

My kids are witty and love to crack a joke at any opportunity. We’ll often recount funny stories from their earlier years or from our own childhoods, which they love to hear.

Most of all, I love to hear my kids laughing and having fun together (even the giggles from their room past bedtime).

2. You’re Never Lonely

Growing up an only child, I remember the loneliness of being the only kid in the house. When I was in preschool, I would make up imaginary siblings and tell my teachers about them, much to my mother’s confusion.

Don’t get me wrong, I had a wonderful childhood and benefited from my parents’ undivided attention. It could just be lonely sometimes.

In a big family, you rarely spend time alone unless you are making a point to do so. You don’t have to beg your parents to play a board game with you or jump in the pool with you. It’s easy to just grab a sibling and go have fun.

When I’m feeling tired or low, one of my little ones will give me a hug or a snuggle. Feeling lonely can easily be remedied if it ever occurs.

When our children are ever separated from each other, they talk about how much they miss each other. It’s clear they have a strong bond.

3. You Worry Less

Sure, as a parent there will always be worries. It’s not easy being responsible for lives that you cherish more than your own.

But one of the advantages of having a big family is you worry less about the little stuff. By the second or third kid, you’ve reached your parenting stride. You feel more at ease and know that most things are going to work out just fine.

You don’t question every decision or have to look up expert advice at every turn.

The house is babyproofed and you’ve hopefully lowered your standards for housekeeping so you’re not constantly stressed.

You’ve realized that children can be more independent than you’d expect and they’re actually pretty resilient little beings. It’s hard to describe the feeling, but it is a lot more relaxed style of parenting.

4. We Learn From Each Other

It’s great to see the older kids teaching the younger kids things. They both get so much out of it. One of my toddler’s favorite things is having an older sibling read her a book. Of course, they also love to teach her funny new phrases.

They can help each other with their math homework. And what childhood would be complete without learning how to make an armpit fart from your sibling?

As much as my kids learn from each other, I’m also amazed at how much I still learn from all of them. They each have unique interests that are always evolving.

They love to delve into new subjects and share their knowledge with the family. It reminds me how much their little minds are growing all the time.

5. Teaches Teamwork

With six people in our household, we’ve had to learn to work together to get things done. Cleaning up in particular is a family affair. The job gets a lot easier when everyone pitches in.

Siblings who share a room must cooperate to pick it up together.

When we’re getting ready to go somewhere, everyone lends a hand to gather what we need and corral the littler ones to the car. Our movements require a group effort because mom and dad don’t have enough hands.

Loading and unloading the car for vacations or trips to the grocery store requires all hands on deck because more people means more stuff to haul. It’s not as much of a burden when we all chip in.

6. Teaches Sharing

Growing up, I’d never shared a room with anyone until college. Many kids in big families share a room at some point during their childhood. There’s some evidence to suggest that sharing a room can be a positive experience and help kids develop skills like emotional intelligence and conflict management.

When there are a few kids or more, there won’t be enough televisions, video game systems, etc. to go around. It becomes a fact of life that things have to be shared. I think this helps with interactions with friends, classmates, and probably others in the future.

Our kids are used to hand-me-downs and sharing french fries with their brother. Sharing is engrained from an early age, and they make the best of it.

7. Family Always Has Your Back

While we haven’t had any iconic playground fights with one sibling sticking up for another, they do frequently stand up for each other in little ways. If someone is feeling hurt or left out, they’ll make an attempt to remedy the situation.

If a sibling is scared or sick, they will try to soothe them, offering kind words and things that might help such as favorite stuffed animals.

My oldest in particular is always looking out for his littler siblings, as much as they drive him crazy sometimes. He goes into protector mode over our toddler.

I know they would go to bat for each other if ever a need arose, and I’m always telling them how important it is to always be there for each other.

One of the reasons I wanted a big family is having to go through a parent having a long illness alone. If something like that ever happens, I will feel better knowing my kids can lean on each other.

8. Love Is Multiplied

When I was going to have my second child, I worried so much about how I would love them as much as my first. It felt like my heart belonged to my first child, so I wondered what would happen with a second one.

Much to my relief, I quickly realized that your amount of love is not finite, and it multiplies with each subsequent child. I feel so much love for all my children, and I can feel the love they have for each other. Our house is brimming with it.

Everyone doesn’t get along 100% of the time, but the important deep connection of love is always there. Of the advantages of having a big family, this might be the biggest.

9. Watching Generations Grow

One of my greatest joys in life is watching all of my kids’ personalities develop. As I watch them grow into mature humans, I can’t help but think about what things will look like one day when they might have children of their own.

Each of my parents had several siblings, and their family gatherings were always the best. Cousins playing together are some of my fondest childhood memories.

Now I’m creating this shared history with my big family, and one day we’ll hopefully have great family gatherings of our own with generations of love to share.

Is a Big Family Right for You?

I’m not here to convince anyone to have a big family. You should have the size of family that’s right for you and your situation.

If this view seemed overly rosy, my article about having four kids includes some of the challenges of having a big family (have you seen my grocery bill?).

The bottom line is one type of family is not better than another. There are pros and cons to all family types. What’s most important is the love and support that’s given.

Personally, I always knew I wanted more than one child, and having a big family ended up being right for me. I wanted to write this article because sometimes big families receive judgment or are viewed as different from the norm. In reality, there’s a lot that’s great about big families.

I hope reviewing the advantages of having a big family has shown why it is a good fit for some people. Personally, I’m glad I’ve gotten to experience the joys of my big family.

I have four children (i’m in the UK though) & I absolutely adore it! They are all under 5. 😅 … I also enjoy the funny looks whilst out and when my children are all over the place playing 😂. And the things kids say! Makes everything worth it! I wouldn’t change it for the world! (Not to mention needing a big table just to eat out) I LOVE IT!!!!

I am coming from a big family, I have 7 siblings, -3 sisters and 4 brothers - I am the fifth. It was not easy for me, I felt that I was ignored. Today we are all adults - middle age, I feel that my parents did not have enough time to spend with us. All was not Disneyland color. Today my sisters, brothers and I have disagreements, even some of them do not even talked among them. Big families are not Lala land.

One of the biggest decision married couples face is how many children to add to their family. Some may choose one or two kids, while others may want four or more children.

There are pros and cons to both, but according to a study on happiness in family life, those who are in larger families are happier. " … members of large families say they are more satisfied with their lives than others and that they think they have stronger personal relationships than most people."

Having a large family can be chaotic at times, financially difficult and sometimes overwhelming, but there are some really great benefits to having a full house.

Kids learn how to build relationships.

With several children in the home, siblings always have someone to play (or fight) with on a regular basis. They learn how to get along, bounce back after a disagreement, work together and learn how to share.

These are life skills! How often do we have to do school projects alongside people we don't always get along with? How many times have you been annoyed or frustrated with a coworker? Learning to get along with a variety of personalities, or at least how to be nice in the face of less than desirable circumstances, will help your children be successful in life. It's real world experience from a very young age.

Families learn how to work hard and work together.

In a home with only a couple of children, parents can more easily do all the housework alone. In large families, however, teamwork becomes necessary. Mom or Dad can't do it all alone. Each child has to pitch in to keep the house and family running. Chores get assigned, and everyone works together to get things accomplished.

Knowing how to do simple things like sweeping, vacuuming, washing dishes and cleaning bathrooms are necessary — especially when children move out on their own. I remember watching a reality show once where the main character, who was in her late teens or early twenties, had no idea how to use a broom! So, her mother just did it for her. Kids need to learn how to clean, organize and take care of their own belongings.

The different personalities and skills complement each other and add diversity to family life.

Large families have the advantage of utilizing each family member's strengths in daily life. Kids come with their own personalities and skills. Some are quiet, some loud; some are kind and caring, some bold and independent; some may love music or sports; some kids are culinary gurus, while some may have inventive ideas. Pulling from everyone's skills can make family life more enjoyable and fulfilling.

Utilize this diversity in family problem solving, planning trips or trying to generate ideas. Each unique person will have something new and different to contribute. Not only will each person feel needed and wanted, but they will also each develop a strong sense of self. Each personality can be fun to get to know and love.

Families support each other.

It's nice to know that someone always has your back. Even though kids will fight with each other, they are ready and willing to defend a sibling against bullies or comfort each other after a hard day. Families stick together. They rely on and support one another. It's a perfectly designed support system full of close bonds and love.

Of course, all these great factors need to be cultivated by the parents. Children need guidance and direction to help them learn. Parents will have to correct wrongs and teach children how to treat one another. Families are the best place to learn how to get along in the world, but also to be a safe and loving place to land when life gets hard.

Family is an indispensable part of society. Some people believe that having a multigenerational family has both benefits and drawbacks. From my perspective, I agree with this statement for the following reasons.

Living in an extended family, in my opinion, has three major advantages. For the first reason, family members might provide more support to one another. Grandparents, for example, can care for children while their parents are at work. Secondly, each family member has a closer relationship than in a nuclear family. Family relationships are enhanced when different generations live together. Children's behavioral and emotional difficulties are reduced when grandparents are involved in their lives. Grandparents can play a vital role in the lives of children whose parents have split. Living with their children and grandchildren relieves grandparent’s loneliness and enriches their daily lives. Furthermore, households with two or more adult generations are more cost-effective. Utilities, food, maintenance costs, decorating costs, property taxes, homeowners' insurance, and homeowners' association fees are all things that can be shared. Young adults who share expenses have the potential to save money or pay off debt. Young adults can cut debt, enhance their credit, and save for a down buy by temporarily living with their families.

On the other hand, the drawbacks of a big family also need to be considered. The first one is more noise. Adults who are unaccustomed to being around children may need some adjustment time. Household rules can limit loud play by place and time. In addition, When living together, there can be more family tension. Financial disagreements, parenting differences, and household responsibilities are all common sources of friction. Before such issues become problems, rules and procedures for dealing with them should be discussed and resolved.

In conclusion, the advantages of living in a big family appear to be greater than the disadvantages. There may be more family tension but members from a tight relationship can help each other when they have tough problems.

The Moral Limits of Bankruptcy Law

When Purdue Pharma filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2019 , it had over a billion dollars in the bank and owed no money to lenders. But it also had the Sacklers, its owners, who were eager to put behind them allegations that they played a leading role in the national opioid epidemic.

The United States Supreme Court is now considering whether the bankruptcy system should have given this wealthy family a permanent shield against civil liability. But there is a bigger question at stake, too: Why is a company with no lenders turning to the federal bankruptcy system in response to accusations of harm and misconduct?

The maker of OxyContin is one in a long line of companies that have turned Chapter 11 into a legal Swiss Army knife, tackling problems that are a mismatch for its rules. Managing costly and sprawling litigation through bankruptcy can be well intentioned. But Chapter 11 was designed around the goal of helping financially distressed businesses restructure loans and other contract obligations.

If companies instead turn to bankruptcy to permanently and comprehensively cap liability for wrongdoing — the objective not only of Purdue Pharma but also of many other entities over recent decades — they can shortchange the rights of individuals seeking accountability for corporate coverups of toxic products and other wrongdoing. And in a country that relies on lawsuits and the civil justice system to deter corporate malfeasance, permanently capping liability using a procedure focused primarily on debt and money could be making us less safe.

In 1978, a bipartisan group of lawmakers enacted sweeping reforms to American bankruptcy law. To enhance economic value and keep viable businesses alive for the benefit of workers and other stakeholders, these changes gave companies more protection and control in bankruptcy. This new bankruptcy code also made it easier to alter the legal rights of creditors during and after bankruptcy without their consent.

To provide more sweeping protection to a distressed but viable company, the new bankruptcy laws also expanded the definition of “creditor” to include people allegedly injured by the business. Yet the rules governing Chapter 11 were drafted primarily with loans and contracts, not large numbers of harmed individuals, in mind.
